Research background: Although agricultural competitiveness is not a new topic, it is worth noting that it has recently come back to the attention of researchers due to various factors such as climate change, food security, price uncertainty, or structural transformation. Consequently, a growing number of articles have emerged on this subject, leading to shifts in overarching research trends and the structure of research within this domain. Purpose of the article: This study aims to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the research constituents within the field of agricultural competitiveness. Additionally, it seeks to unveil the intellectual and cognitive frameworks spanning the years 1990 to 2022. This exploration will enable the identification of thematic clusters that both shape and guide the field, shedding light on current research trends. Methods: This research employs bibliometric analysis, specifically employing performance analysis and science mapping techniques like bibliographic coupling and co-word analyses. These tools are harnessed to scrutinize the constituents of research and the underlying intellectual and cognitive structures inherent to the agricultural competitiveness field. A dataset of 622 articles from the Web of Science database was subjected to analysis using the VOSviewer software. Findings & value added: The findings prominently illustrate a notable surge in research activity within this domain, with a substantial proportion of articles originating from the United States. The study further identifies six distinct research topics within agricultural competitiveness: (1) energy efficiency and bioenergy, (2) price fluctuation, uncertainty, and market behavior, (3) structural transformation of agriculture, (4) rural development, (5) policy issues, and (6) climate change. Moreover, the research offers insights into potential future research avenues. The uniqueness and value of this work stem from its pioneering approach, being the first to synthesize agricultural competitiveness research through an amalgamation of bibliometric techniques. Furthermore, the study contributes substantially to the theoretical advancement of agricultural competitiveness research.

The study is an attempt to define the role of the Mercosur in Polish foreign agri-food trade and to examine the competitive position of agri-food products made in Poland on the markets of members of Mercosur in the years 2004-2009. A deliberately selected set of ex post indicators of competitive position were used in the paper. The analysis showed that the Mercosur countries are an important partner of the Polish, especially as a source of supply of agri-food products. The highest level of competitive advantages on the markets of Mercosur region, and also the highest scale of export specialization was observed in the group of animal origin products. On the other hand among the plant origin products the least competitive was sugar and honey.

W polskim rolnictwie istnieje nieliczna zbiorowość przedsiębiorstw rolnych (gospodarstw rolnych) osób prawnych i jednostek organizacyjnych niemających osobowości prawnej. Celem badania omawianego w artykule jest ocena konkurencyjności przedsiębiorstw rolnych w warunkach postępujących zmian platformy konkurencji. Oceny dokonano na podstawie wyników przeprowadzonej analizy finansowej. Z uwagi na złożoność problemu pomiaru konkurencyjności w badaniu zastosowano schemat, w którym ograniczono się do określenia wielkości korzyści uzyskiwanych przez właścicieli przedsiębiorstw rolnych i poziomu bezpieczeństwa finansowego działalności gospodarczej. Źródłem danych wykorzystanych w badaniu były udostępnione przez Główny Urząd Statystyczny zagregowane wyniki finansowe za lata 2014–2021 przedsiębiorstw rolnych zobligowanych do przekazywania sprawozdań statystycznych. Stwierdzono, że badana zbiorowość systematycznie się zmniejsza i że ta tendencja będzie się utrzymywała. Jednocześnie badane przedsiębiorstwa rolne jako całość były w analizowanym okresie odporne na zmiany zachodzące w otoczeniu makroekonomicznym, a jedynie poszczególne grupy i klasy wyodrębnione ze względu na ukierunkowanie produkcyjne okazały się wrażliwe na szoki występujące w danej branży. Duże problemy finansowe i brak konkurencyjności stwierdzono zwłaszcza w gospodarstwach sadowniczych i ukierunkowanych na chów i hodowlę świń.
A small group of agricultural enterprises (agricultural farms) of corporate and noncorporate entities functions within the Polish agriculture. The aim of the research discussed in the article was to assess the competitiveness of agricultural enterprises under conditions of progressive changes taking place in the competition platform. The assessment was based on the results of a financial analysis. Due to the complex nature of measuring competitiveness, the research employed a model limited to determining the amount of benefits accrued by owners of agricultural enterprises and the level of the financial security of their business operations. The source of data were the 2014–2021 financial results of agricultural enterprises having a statistical reporting obligation. The data were aggregated and made available by Statistics Poland. It was found that the surveyed group is facing a systematic decline and that this trend will continue in the future. At the same time, throughout the analysed period, the surveyed agricultural enterprises as a whole were immune to changes taking place in the macroeconomic environment and only individual groups and classes distinguished on the basis of their production orientation proved sensitive to shocks occurring in the given industry. Major financial problems and lack of competitiveness were observed in orchard cultivation and pig farming.

This article attempts to assess the productivity and competitiveness of the agricultural sector in Poland. The data used in the article were provided by Polish FADN (Farm Accountancy Data Network) and the Central Statistical Office, which makes them a representative and reliable source of information on agriculture in Poland. Studies have shown that the agricultural sector in Poland is characterised by low productivity, especially of small and medium-sized farms prevailing in Poland, as well as low internal competitiveness measured by the share of the national agricultural sector in generating GDP. Studies have shown, on the other hand, that the situation of the sector is relatively well presented in terms of the external competitiveness represented by its share in exports.
Cet article vise à évaluer la productivité et la compétitivité du secteur agricole en Pologne. Les données utilisées dans l’article ont été fournies par le Réseau de données comptables agricoles polonais et l’Office central des statistiques, ce qui en fait une source d’information représentative et fiable sur l’agriculture en Pologne. Des études ont montré que le secteur agricole en Pologne est caractérisé par une faible productivité, en particulier des petites et moyennes exploitations agricoles qui existent en Pologne, ainsi que par une faible compétitivité interne mesurée par la part du secteur agricole national dans la production du PIB.Des études ont montré, d’autre part, que la situation du secteur est relativement favorable en termes de compétitivité externe, représentée par sa part dans les exportations.

The article presents selected legal problems in the scope of rural development policy, which affect the competitiveness of the agricultural sector in Poland. Selected submeasures identified in the Rural Development Programme 2014–2020 were subjected to legal analysis in terms of rationality and possible efficiency of the adopted assumptions. Potential dysfunctions were indicated and proposals according to the intended law were contained. There has also been an attempt to assess the functioning of the Common Agricultural Policy as a mechanism for improving the competitiveness of the individual farms, as well as the entire agricultural sector.

Celem opracowania była ocena zmian konkurencyjności między trzema bioproduktami: pszenicą ozimą, żytem ozimym i rzepakiem ozimym w latach 2008 i 2011. Podstawową metodą badawczą była analiza porównawcza konkurencyjności absolutnej i względnej między bioproduktami w danym roku. W 2008 roku przewagę absolutną względem pozostałych upraw miał rzepak ozimy, na drugim miejscu była pszenica ozima na trzecim żyto ozime. Hierarchia upraw w oparciu o kryterium przewagi względnej była następująca: pszenica ozima, rzepak ozimy i żyto ozime. W 2011 roku przewaga absolutna między tymi bioproduktami miała następujący układ: pszenica, rzepak i żyto, a względna: pszenica, żyto, rzepak. W najwyższym stopniu wpływa na poprawę korzyści ekonomicznych w gospodarstwie ten bioprodukt, który ma przewagę względną i absolutną, a w następnej kolejności ten o przewadze względnej.
The purpose of the paper was to asses changes of competitiveness among three bio-products: winter wheat, winter rye and winter rape in the year 2008 and 2011. The main research method was a comparative analysis of absolute and relative competitiveness among these bio-products in the given year. In the year 2008 winter rape had an absolute advantage over the other crops, followed by winter wheat and winter rye that took the second and third places respectively. In that year the hierarchy of crops according to the relative competitive advantage criterion was as follows: winter wheat, winter rape and winter rye. In the year 2011 the criterion of absolute advantage between these bio-products yielded the following order: wheat, rape and rye, whereas the criterion of relative advantage: wheat, rye and rape. The highest impact on the improvement of economic benefits of an agricultural holding has the bio-product characterized with the relative and absolute advantage, followed by the one with the relative advantage.

Summary This paper considers exchange rates as factors influencing the global competitiveness of agricultural products. It concerns countries which have a positive agricultural foreign trade balance. A stronger currency reduces the global competitiveness of agricultural products for many exporters but its influence is relatively low. Regulations of agricultural production andforeign trade are more important factors. Moreover, exchange rates do not influence on countries which have a negative agricultural trade balance.

In the agricultural sector price competitiveness of the agricultural products plays important role. It should be noted, however, that the mere fact of offering the product at a lower price does not make it more competitive.  In case of agricultural products the most important factors are: the quality, delivery terms and tariff barriers in foreign trade. Lower market prices for agricultural products in Poland determine their competitiveness on the EU market. The level of prices of Polish agricultural products results from lower purchasing power of Polish consumers. The integration with the EU reduced the price differences between Poland and the European Union, especially on the product market, whose sales had not been liberalized earlier.
W rolnictwie duże znaczenie odgrywa konkurencyjność cenowa produktów. Należy jednak zauważyć, iż sam fakt oferowania produktu po cenie niższej nie czyni bardziej konkurencyjnego. W przypadku produktów rolnych duże znaczenie ma jakość, warunki dostawy czy bariery w handlu zagranicznym. Niższy poziom cen polskich produktów rolnych wynika głównie z mniejszej siły nabywczej polskich konsumentów. Integracja z UE zmniejszyła różnice cenowe między Polską a Unią Europejską, szczególnie na rynku produktów, których obrót nie był wcześniej zliberalizowany.

Podwyższenie wymogów w konkurencji na światowym rynku rolno-spożywczym zwiększa wagę problemu oceny międzynarodowej konkurencyjności sektora rolnego Ukrainy oraz jej regionów. Aktualny problem oceny możliwości eksportu ukraińskich produktów rolniczo-spożywczych na rynki światowe jest przedstawiony poprzez obliczenia indeksów relatywnych przewag komparatywnych RCA (Relative Comparative Advantage Index) oraz RSCA, który stanowi symetryczną transformację RCA i pozwala określić perspektywiczne rynki zbytu regionalnych produktów spożywczych. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono stosunkom z Polską.
In order to evaluate the competitiveness of Ukrainian agricultural products in world agri-food markets, indices RCA (Relative Comparative Advantage Index) and RSCA were calculated for products coming from the Zhytomir province in Ukraine. The perspectives of Ukrainian accession to the EU with respect to the agricultural sector and particularly the trade relations with Poland also were investigated.

The aim ofthis paper is to present the impact of organic food production to increase the competitiveness ofthe agrifood sector in Poland in a globalized world economy. Condition for the commercial success of organic food market is cooperation between producers and intermediary firms and exporters, and the creation of producer groups. Addressing a market niche that is the production of2organic food and the desire to build an integrated logistics chain from producer to consumer, can be a determinant of competitive advantage for their firms agri-food sector over the TNCs.

The aim of the work was to investigate how the Polish integration with the EU structures effected on the development of foreign trade, in particular in agricultural products. According to the analysis, Poland’s participation in trade agreements triggered agricultural trade creation and diversion effects. Moreover, the development of trade was caused also by the growing competitiveness of Polish agricultural products in the world market.
Celem pracy było zbadanie skutków stowarzyszenia i integracji Polski ze strukturami Unii Europejskiej dla rozwoju wymiany handlowej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem handlu towarami rolno-spożywczymi. Wyniki przeprowadzonej analizy wskazały, iż uczestnictwo Polski w porozumieniach handlowych wywołało efekt kreacji i przesunięcia w handlu artykułami rolno-spożywczymi. Wpływ na rozwój wymiany handlowej miała również rosnąca konkurencyjność polskich produktów rolno-żywnościowych na rynku światowym.
