Opis:
Organizations face irreversible and reflective change derived from the growing trend of using business models based on information technology. Strategies for the digital transformation of business involve human creativity, knowledge, and the technology necessary to generate innovations that provide organizations competitive advantages. Consequently, knowledge management can boost the processes of organizations to adapt to the current socioeconomic environment. This work proposes a knowledge management model for small and medium-sized companies to promote improvements to their processes by collecting available intellectual capital in a highly changing environment. The proposed model includes the stages of diagnosis and planning of knowledge management, acquisition, storage, distribution, use, and transformation.

The article focuses on the characteristics of regional policy, regional development, regional marketing and regional marketing communication from a theoretical perspective. Subsequently, we characterize research that was realized in 2019 and included V4 countries - Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, along with Serbia. Its aim was to characterize the main reasons of the failure of small and medium-sized enterprises and approach the current challenges of small and medium entrepreneurships, the main question we tried to answer was- How to prevent SMEs from failure? The activities related to the project led to the clarification of different aspects of business activities that can lead to successful and/or unsuccessful entrepreneurial activities. For the purpose of this article, we have selected eight research questions from Slovakia that are currently relevant to the topic of the article. We outline the main obstacles to business success in Slovakia, we characterize external factors that created business difficulties and three questions deal with marketing and marketing communication, because standing in a strong competitive environment requires, among other things, the ability to sell one´s business to customers. The aim of the article is to point out the factors that influence business and success in the market of small and medium enterprises in Slovakia.

Business models and business model change have drawn increasing attention from both researchers and practitioners across various disciplines, including the domain of entrepreneurship. However, even though the importance of business model innovation as a driver of firm performance has been widely acknowledged, empirical studies explaining the business model change remain limited. This study contributes to prior research by examining the effects of effectual and causation-based decisionmaking logics on the degree of business model change in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises in Finland. The findings of hierarchical regression analysis show that both causation and effectuation-based logics have positive effects on business model change, thereby highlighting the need for both strategizing and seizing of opportunities in business model development.

Industrial companies are the core of the national innovation system. However, large, medium and small enterprises differ significantly in their role in the innovation system, resource potential, strategic priorities and objectives. The paper focuses on a comparative analysis of the strategic priorities of innovative activities of Russian companies of different size. We have identified three types of companies: small innovative companies, large and medium-sized companies with a traditional business model, major innovation-driven companies with an integrated business model. Our analysis of the trajectories of small innovative firms located in Novosibirsk Scientific Center showed that the majority of the companies can be characterized either as spin-off firm or as specialized supplier. Spin-offs are newly established small firms, who have recently separated from the major research labs or parent companies. The typical behavior model for such companies is innovative entrepreneurship. Specialized suppliers are small companies that provide significant contributions to complex manufacturing systems in the form of equipment, parts, tools and software. Innovative objectives of such small companies deal with design and production of the specific elements required for large companies. Large and medium-sized companies with a traditional business model are characterized by the existing structure of commodity output and the supply chain. Characteristic type of innovative behavior for such companies includes incremental product and process innovations. Large innovation-oriented companies with an integrated business model have traditional production units and innovative units in their structure. Innovation priorities of major innovation-oriented companies with integrated business model are consistent with the hybrid model of behavior which combines the traditional model with an innovative entrepreneurship.

The article presents a business model based on an industrial network of companies capable of producing personalized products in an Industry 4.0 environment. Based on research conducted in Poland, in manufacturing companies, the critical problems associated with the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies and the expected benefits associated with their implementation are addressed. The model’s task is to integrate a customer expecting personalized production with a network of companies with the appropriate production resources. The original achievement is the integration of the customer and the manufacturer around an e-business platform, which allows the rapid prototyping of a network of SME companies capable of realizing personalized production. The proposed model describes the architecture of enterprise cooperation under the conditions of implementing the Industry 4.0 concept and is dedicated to the SME sector. The model provides a basis for building prototypes of e-business platforms of small and medium-sized enterprises.

Research background: The research examines the impact of emotional intelligence and ethics on knowledge sharing within organizations. It examines the impact of emotional intelligence (EQ) on the ethical behavior of the individual. The focus is on the individuals working in the SME sector. A questionnaire survey was considered the most appropriate technique to conduct the research. The study is based on 1162 responses, collected from three countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia). Purpose of the article: The aim of this article is to examine the relationship between knowledge sharing, ethics and emotional intelligence. Furthermore, nationality, gender, education, and the age of the respondents influencing EQ are also examined. The additional goal is to explore the factors that influence employee behavior. Methods: We identified four hypotheses. To test these hypotheses, we used variance analysis and logistic regression. The AES scale was chosen to assess EQ, which consisted of 33 items. The results obtained are compared with the opinion of SME owners resulting from structured interviews. Findings & value added: About 20% of enterprises are not using any motivation tool to initiate knowledge sharing of their employees. The most common (47.2%) reason for silencing knowledge - the lack of appreciation - did not appear among the answer of company owners. According to the employee perceptions, gender has impact on the level of emotional intelligence, while nationality, education and age group have no impact on the EQ. SME owners do not address much attention to gender. The occurrence of unethical behavior does not depend on the size of the enterprise. According to employee opinion, the EQ has positive impact on knowledge sharing, while it is not affected by ethics. The majority of owners also agreed with the positive impact of EQ. The attitude of employees and owners differ in different aspects. The results have shown that gender plays an influential role in EQ. The research of this complex problem laid down the empirical foundations for the V4 countries.

Research background: SMEs represent an integral part of the economy environment in a majority of the countries all over the world. They signify the most efficient, progressive, and important part of the advanced economies. The long-term effort of the EU countries, as well as other advanced economies is to create quality and stable conditions for their development in order to be able to respond to all the possible changes in the business environment that is being changed to more and more comprehensive in the recent time. Purpose of the article: The objective of the contribution is to examine administrative and legislative obstacles to SMEs business in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and the quantification of the differences in perceiving legislative and administrative obstacles to business by entrepreneurs in both countries. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted within SMEs in the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 2019. The research sample included 641 SMEs, 312 from the Czech Republic and 329 from Slovakia. We focused on 5 dimensions related to legislative and administrative obstacles to SMEs business within which selected statements were examined. Contingency tables were used to analyze the ratios of the examined variables. Findings & Value added: The differences detected in both countries in the respondents´ perception and assessment are evidence of the changes in the business environment of both countries, giving rise to the questions about the extent to which the legislative and administrative obstacles, as well as the obstacles related to law enforcement and bureaucracy are acceptable and by which groups of entrepreneurs. The results of the research provide valuable findings for the creators of regional and national policies, and represent a valuable basis for the creation of the concepts focused on the SMEs´ development in both countries.  The results of the study also support the implementation of follow-up research in this area that will reveal other determinants affecting the development of SMEs. They also create a valuable platform for the construction of national and international benchmarking indicators in this area and the implementation of comparative analyses. This will also support the methodological area necessary for a creation of high-quality concepts and strategies.

The aim of the paper is the presentation of theoretical foundations and the structure of original, 8-stage statics and dynamics model in the small business life cycle. Based on theoretical considerations, two hypotheses concerning the impact of dynamic and static nature of the life-cycle stages on selected determinants and effects of SMEs’ development were formulated. The hypotheses were verified based on the results of the survey conducted on a sample of 1,741 SMEs from 22 countries of the European Union. The results indicate that companies in the dynamic life-cycle stages are run by more enterprising owners, operate in more promising markets with a higher potential and make greater use of market niches thus limiting the level of competition. At the same time, such companies are characterised by higher levels of flexibility and involvement in innovative activities, which translates into obtaining a significantly higher level of business performance, in the area of quantitative as well as qualitative results.

SMEs sector plays a vital role in modern economies. Therefore, the interest in its functioning among economists is in fact quite natural. This article is a part of a current research on regional factors contributing to the development of enterprises in this category. The first section examines earlier studies in this field conducted globally and in Poland. According to them, many elements enable the SME’s development. It is not surprisingly that the specified set of pro-growth factors does not exists. Next section describes the results of the author’s own studies in the fields. These studies relate to regional factors contributing to the efficiency growth of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland. Data used in the study was collected from GUS and EUROSTAT and encompassed 16 provinces for the years 2003-2008. The model prepared included 11 independent variables on labor force, social mobility, living standard and R&D policy. The authors would have gladly considered more than 11 explanatory variable, but the inaccessibility of such data made it impossible. In the next step, using GRETL software, equations of regression were defined. On this basis it was concluded that the most important factors contributing to efficiency growth of SMEs are the amount of spending on R&D and the level of wages.

Purpose – The aim of this article is to identify the issues of short food supply chains (SFSCs) in three countries of Central and Eastern Europe, i.e. Lithuania, Latvia and Poland, to compare the barriers to shortening food supply chains and to indicate business models for short supply chains. Design/methodology/approach – Within the AgroBRIDGES project, the authors organized local co-creation workshops from August to September 2021 in 12 European regions and countries, engaging 150þ agrifood stakeholders of the project’s local communities. Findings – The development potential of SFSCs in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland is high and seems to be growing every year. Currently, the development potential of SFSCs in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland is stimulated more by social trends than by public support. Traditional business models based on the distribution of food products through local and regional markets have a definitely diminishing potential. Research limitations/implications – Although this article covers an existing gap in the literature, it also has several limitations that may serve as an inspiration for future research. First, the results draw on a sample of agrifood value chain stakeholders in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland; hence, the findings might be industry specific. Therefore, future studies should explore this topic on wider target groups or different industries. Moreover, the method is qualitative and could be supplemented with additional quantitative analysis of similar tools or the experience of other agrifood companies from European countries. Practical implications – The article seeks to build bridges between consumers and producers by supporting SFSCs through a systemic, holistic and multi-actor approach. Originality/value – The study elaborates on the under-researched topic of SFSCs in the context of barriers to shortening food supply chains and business models for short supply chains in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland.

This article addresses three fundamental issues. The first issue is Polish small and medium-sized service enterprises, the second - Business Environment Institutions, and the third one - the impact of these institutions on the innovation of the entities in question. The article presents part of the outcome of the research carried out on a group of over two hundred and sixty small and medium-sized service enterprises. The focus of the analysis made was on the intensity of cooperation between these entities and business environment institutions within the area of their innovativeness. The research objective of this article was to assess the impact of business environment institutions on the innovation of Polish small and medium-sized service enterprises. Prior to the commencement of the research we formulated the following research hypothesis - universities are institutions that have the most positive impact on the innovation of micro, small and medium-sized service enterprises. The research questionnaire technique was applied in the survey. The results obtained indicated that the level of cooperation between Polish small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the BEI services sector is very low. This cooperation was found to be usually sporadic or only periodic. Most of the institutions have no influence on the innovativeness of the enterprises surveyed. Only cooperation with entities representing the area of science, research and development transpires to have a significant impact on the level of innovativeness among the respondents.

Research background: In the past, the main objective of a company was to generate sufficient profit. Nowadays, a company must seek to achieve much broader objectives. To be successful in this pursuit, it must not only measure financial performance, but also monitor internal and external developments, increase shareholders' wealth and protect the interests of other stakeholders, i.e. to analyze and act on those factors that affect company value. Purpose of the article: The objective of the contribution is to determine through the use of artificial neural networks the relationship between business value drivers, or value based drivers (VBD), and EVA Equity, which is economic value added (EVA), of small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the rural areas of the Czech Republic. Methods: The data was obtained from the Bisnode´s Albertina database. The data set consists of the profit and loss accounts for 2013 to 2017 of small and medium-sized enterprises operating in rural areas of the Czech Republic. Two scenarios are analyzed. In the first, the independent variables are only the value drivers, whereas in the second, company location (region) is included. The objective is to find the dependence of EVA Equity on individual VBD and company location. A sensitivity analysis is conducted, on the basis of which the importance of individual value drivers and company location is determined. Findings & Value added: The output is a set of value drivers, which could be used by company managers to regulate the growth of EVA Equity, i.e. value for shareholders. The findings reveal that the difference between successful and unsuccessful companies is determined by the level of involvement of human capital; companies use a large number of substitutes for factors of production, whereby the involvement of borrowed capital is likely to cause a positive financial leverage effect.

Findings: In the postcolonial perspective, qualitative analysis shows neither a positive nor a negative impact of colonialism on the contemporary general business environment. If certain signs of its deterioration are observed, they are mostly due to the erosion of state capacity, whose origins can be traced back to the Berlin Conference. Originality: Papers on Postcolonial Management and Critical Management Studies (CMS) bridge the gap in literature pertaining to management issues, especially in Poland. Due to their interdisciplinary nature, Postcolonial Management and CMS cover a broad range of research areas (i.e. theory of state and nation, sociology, economic history). They pertain to both economics an management, and are therefore difficult to classify.
