Opis:
After nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, sulfur is another essential element that is required for the optimal growth, development and yield of white mustard and other species of the family Brassicaceae. The effect of different pre-sowing sulfur fertilizer doses on the glucosinolate content and profile of three traditional white mustard cultivars that are widely grown in Poland was analyzed in a three-year, small-area field experiment. White mustard was grown in the experimental fields of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences in south-western Poland in 2007-2009. The experiment had a split-plot design with two levels of experimental factors. White mustard cultivar (Metex, Nakielska, Radena) was the first experimental factor, and sulfur fertilizer dose (0, 10, 20, 30 S kg ha-1) was the second experimental factor. The glucosinolate content of white mustard seeds was analyzed by gas chromatography. White mustard seeds were most abundant in sinalbin, an aromatic glucosinolate. The sinalbin content of seeds varied in response to different sulfur fertilizer doses. An increase in the sinalbin concentration was observed already in response to a sulfur dose of 10 kg ha-1 relative to the control treatment. The total content of aliphatic glucosinolates was significantly lowest in the treatment where sulfur fertilization was not applied. The content of aliphatic glucosinolates in white mustard seeds was significantly highest in the treatment fertilized with sulfur at 20 kg ha-1. Weather conditions significantly influenced the total glucosinolate content and the proportions of the analyzed glucosinolate groups in white mustard seeds.

Reactive materials represent a promising agent for environmental co-remediation. The research was aimed to determine the influence of hexavalent chromium in doses of 0, 25, 50, and 150 mg Cr(VI).kg-1 of soil as well as zero valent-iron, and lignite additives on the content of macroelements in the Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.). The average accumulation of the analysed elements in Indian mustard grown in Cr(VI) contaminated soil were found to follow the decreasing order Mg>Na>P>Ca>K. Soil contamination at 150 mg Cr(VI).kg-1 of soil led to the highest increase in magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium content in Indian mustard. The application of zero-valent iron had a positive influence on the average Na and K content of the tested plant. The application of lignite had a positive influence on the average magnesium, sodium and calcium content in the above-ground parts of the studied plant. In the non-amended treatments (without reactive materials), the increasing rates of chromium (VI) had an explicitly positive effect on the content of phosphorous and sodium in Indian mustard.

Opis:
This study was carried out with the objective to estimate the genotypic variability and other yield related traits of Ethiopian mustard in North West Ethiopia. A total of 36 genotypes of Ethiopian mustard were considered for this study. Analysis of variance was computed to contrast the variability within the collected genotypes based on yield and other yield related traits. The results revealed highly significant values(p<0.01) for days to maturity, grain filling period, number of pod per plot, secondary branches per plant, harvest index, seed yield per plot, seed yield per hectare and oil content. Significant differences (p<0.05) were noted for days to flowering, plant height, primary branch per plant, biomass per plot, oil yield per plot differences among the genotypes. Genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV %) was lower than phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV %) for all the traits studied. High genetic advance with heritability was observed in the following characters; plant height, biomass of the plant, number of secondary branch per plant and grain filling period. There are variations in the extent of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance of traits which can facilitate selection for further improvement of important traits of Ethiopian mustard. Therefore, it can be concluded that the variability within Ethiopian mustard genotypes collected from different areas of northern Ethiopia is high and vital for better crop improvement.

Field experiments were carried out in 1995 and 1996 in several places of Central Poland. Good results of these experiments were: limiting of Heterodera schachtii Schm. population and weed control. During intercrop cultivation new varieties of white mustard and oil radish reduced eelworm population approximately 20-30 %. Only one oil radish variety - Remonta - limited this nematode's population about 40%. A number of weeds was over 40% and cost of weed control about 50% lower in a new sugar beet tillage based on mustard or radish intercrops and mulches than in traditional cultivation. The influence of the new tillage system on sugar beet diseases limiting was not as visible as in the case of eelworm and weeds.
Badania prowadzono w kilku punktach centralnej Polski. Doświadczenia miały charakter polowy. Oceniano efektywność oddziaływania międzyplonów z gorczycy białej odmiany Salvo oraz rzodkwi oleistej odmiany Resal w stosunku do trzech ważnych elementów ochrony buraka cukrowego: populacji Heterodera Schachtii Schm., chorób liści i chwastów.

Two types of prodrugs, benzyl analogues of isophosphoramide mustard (iPAM), activated by cytochrome P450, and acylthioethyl analogues, activated by esterases, were designed. In contrast to iPAM that hydrolyse rapidly, the examined compounds are stable in phosphate-buffered saline and Tris buffer. Benzyl analogues of iPAM are poor substrates for cytochrome P450, are not cytotoxic and posses no antitumour activity. Acylthioethyl analogues of iPAM are good substrates for pig liver esterase, are cytotoxic and exert antitumour activity against L1210 leukaemia in mice. The observed correlation for iPAM analogues between their susceptibility to hydrolysis and cytotoxicity and antitumour activity suggests possible application of these compounds as the prodrugs in gene-directed enzyme-prodrug therapy.

The ability of hydroponically cultivated Indian mustard plants (Sinapis alba L.) to accumulate platinum was investigated. The Pt-bioaccumulation in leaves, stem and shoots of plants growing for 2 and 4 weeks at Pt-concentration of 50 and 500 ěg/L was compared. The relation between dry and fresh weight was also estimated. Adsorptive stripping voltammetry (AdSV) and mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS) were applied for determination of Pt. Increasing Pt-concentration from 50 to 500 ěg/L in the medium causes: (1) reduction of the root tissue hydration level at unchanged modification in aboveground parts of the plants and (2) decrease of the Pt transfer factor (TF) for roots and increase for leaves and stem. Duration of the culture influenced on Pt-accumulation in roots and in aboveground organs of mustard plants. Transfer factor for Pt between 560 and 1600 makes Indian mustard plants one at Pt-hyperaccumulators. Distribution of Pt-bioaccumulation in the plant organs may be useful for biomonitoring of platinum in the environment.

In the laboratory studies on allelopathy, phytotoxicity is defined as a negative impact of plant’s extracts or natural compounds derived from plants, on germination and/or growth of the tested (acceptor) plant. Glycoal-kaloids are the main biologically active compounds of the potato and are involved in potato phytotoxicity (the correlation coefficient of the length of the test plant with the concentration of total glycoalkaloids present in the leaf extracts of forty potato genotypes was r = -0.41). The assessment of phytotoxic abilities of the potato is a two-step procedure which consists of determining glycoalkaloids in potato leaf extracts and analyzing the root and hypocotyl lengths of the test plant growing in potato leaf extracts.

Opis:
The simplification of crop rotation systems, an increase in the concentration of cultivated cereals, and intensification of animal production in litter-free farms have drastically reduced the pig manure production. The consequences include negative organic matter balance and considerable leaching of mineral components from fields. The objective of this paper is to assess the effect of high doses of pig slurry on plants, and to analyse the ionic balance of white mustard. The experiment was conducted in four replications. Test plots were treated with pig slurry at doses of 0, 30, 60, and 90 tonnes fresh mass per hectare. Then, white mustard was sown. After the harvest, the plant material was separated into grains, husks, and stalks. The following were determined in the organic material: total nitrogen, cations (Ca, Mg, K, Na), phosphorus, and total organic acids. The ionic composition of particular parts of plants showed considerable differences associated with different life functions of these plant organs. In grains and stalks of mustard, the ratio of bivalent (Ca+Mg) to monovalent cations (K+Na) showed no considerable variations and was approximate to one. It was only in husks that bivalent cations were three times more abundant that monovalent cations. A considerable increase in yields was observed with an increase in pig slurry doses. The analysis showed the highest accumulation of Ca and K in husks, and the accumulation of mostly N, P, and Mg in grains. During the crop cultivation, approximately 20% of nutrients absorbed by plants from the soil are removed in the form of useful yield, that is grains. The remaining plant parts are ploughed as organic matter, providing nutrients to successive crops through its slow mineralisation over several years.

The plant leaf extracts were prepared by decomposing chopped leaves of Neem, Bakaino, Hattibar, Khirro, and Bojho in cow urine for one month period. Total five extracts were prepared, one by mixing all the leaf while remaining four extracts were prepared excluding one ingredient in each mixture but keeping Tobacco and Bojho in all five extracts. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Completely Block Design using five botanical extracts, chemical (Cypermethrin 10% EC) and control which were replicated thrice. The Rapeseed plant was sprayed with prepared extracts at 30 days after sowing (DAS), 45 DAS and 60 DAS and aphid number counted after 5, 10 and 15 days of each spray from 10 cm apical shoot. The greatest reduction of aphid population was found in chemical followed by complete mixture treated plots but their reduction was not statistically different. While control and plant extracts of without Neem treated plots had resulted less reduction in the number of aphid. Grain yield was also found highest (1436.75 kg/ha) in complete mixture treated plots indicating complete mixture of plant extracts might be the best alternative for aphid management in Rapeseed. It is concluded that all the plant extracts showed insecticidal properties against aphid in rapeseed crop and successfully be integrated, as a part of Integrated Pest Management.

The phytoremediation potential of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) on the cadmium-contaminated soil was investigated under the treatment of sulfur (15, 30 and 60 g/kg soil). The effects of the sulfur treatment were evaluated by measuring the biomass and root vitality of the plants, enzymatic activities, and the content of malondialdehyde and Cd. The results show that the biomass and root vitality of the plants were significantly increased, and the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase were improved when the soil was treated with 30 g sulfur /kg soil, while the activities of peroxidase and malondialdehyde were decreased. The total Cd in the plants treated with 15 g/kg soil was 2.8 times higher than that in the control plants. In summary, the results indicate that the addition of sulfur could promote the growth of Indian mustard and promote the uptake of Cd. As such, the treatment of cadmium-contaminated soil with sulfur can be used as a strategy for the removal of cadmium contamination by improving the phytoremediation potential of Indian mustard.

The object of research was the soil from an orchard after 27 years of apple cultivation, showing signs of fatigue re-sulting in weaker growth of apple seedlings planted into it, and the soil sampled on the same farm, but not used for growing fruit trees. The physicochemical properties of both soils did not differ significantly. In sick soil, no pathogens of fungal or fungi-like origin were found, and the number of nematodes was below the threshold of economic threat. There is a suspicion that abiotic fac-tors could be responsible for soil fatigue. It has been demonstra-ted that the cultivation of spring and winter wheat, triticale and white mustard before planting apple ‘Antonovka’ seedlings, had a positive impact on their growth. The best effect was obtained after the cultivation of white mustard or after the introduction of mustard seed meal into the soil, which was also confirmed by measurements of the intensity of apple seedlings photosynthesis. The cultivation of these phytosanitary plants or the addition of mustard seed meal positively influenced the biological potential of the soil expressed by a significant increase in the population of bacteria from the genera Pseudomonas and Bacillus. There was also a very large increase in the number of Trichoderma spp. fun-gi after the addition of mustard seed meal into the soil and winter wheat cultivation.

The experiment was carried out in the years 2006-2008 in Bałcyny (N=53o35`49”; E=19o51`20”). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of sulfur fertilization on the sanitary state of spring oilseed rape, winter oilseed rape, white mustard and Chinese mustard as well as on the species composition of fungi colonizing their seeds. Sulfur fertilization had a beneficial effect on the health of Brassicaceae plants infested by Alternaria blight, grey mould, Sclerotinia stem rot, Phoma stem canker and Verticillium wilt, but it had a varying effect on the occurrence of powdery mildew. Alternaria alternata and Penicillium spp. were isolated most frequently from Brassicaceae seeds. In general, more fungi (including pathogenic to Brassicaceae) were isolated from the seeds of plants grown in non-sulfur fertilized plots. Pathogens occurred primarily on the seed surface, and their number decreased after surface disinfection of seeds.

The object of research was to determine the impact of broad bean coordinate cultivation (Vicia faba L.), Bartek variety, with a white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) in two row spacing on the dynamics of feeding among imagines of pea leaf weevil (Sitona spp.). The investigations were conducted in the years 2014 and 2015 at the Experimental Station of the University of Agriculture, in Prusy near Cracow. The field experiment comprised the following objects: broad bean, Bartek cv. in pure culture, sown at standard 50 cm x 15 cm spacing (V); broad bean spaced 65 cm x 15 cm with white mustard as the crop intersown between the rows (V+S65); broad bean spaced 80 cm x 15 cm with white mustard as above (V+S80) and broad bean in pure culture, sown at standard 50 cm x 15 cm spacing, but chemically protected with insecticides Fastac 100 EC and Decis 2,5 EC (V ch). The evaluation of the feeding intensity of adult pea weevils was conducted on 25 randomly selected plants from each plot, by measuring the surface area of eaten leaves, counting injured and non-injured leaves and calculating the loss of leaf blade as the result of their feeding. The cultivation of broad bean with a white mustard in row spacing of 80 cm contributed significantly to the reduction in a degree of broad bean leaves damage by pea leaf weevil beetles. The use of smaller spacing - 65 cm limited the area of feeds but only in one of the research seasons. The effectiveness of broad bean protection through cultivation with a white mustard is a few times lower than for chemical protection.

Obejmowało ono następujące obiekty: bób odmiany Bartek wysiewany jako uprawa jednorodna w rozstawie standardowej 50 cm x 15 cm (V); bób uprawiany współrzędnie z gorczycą białą w rozstawie 65 cm x 15 cm (V+S65); bób uprawiany współrzędnie z gorczycą białą w rozstawie 80 cm x 15 cm(V+S80); bób wysiewany jako uprawa jednorodna w rozstawie standardowej 50 cm x 15 cm, chroniony chemicznie insektycydami Fastac 100 EC i Decis 2,5 EC (V ch).
