Opis:
The African-American scholar bell hooks is a well known figure in the Western academic milieu. This article makes an attempt at presenting the model of engaged pedagogy represented in hook’s works and her public appearances. This is done by highlighting the issue of subjective experience in the educational setting. Hook’s concept of race and gender is brought to attention to present the aforementioned issue within the broader context of her socio-cultural concepts she is known for. The outcome of this reconstruction shows us that the model of engaged pedagogy is developed by hooks into a wide set of postulates of structural change of the American schooling system, as well systems in other parts of the world. Therefore, it seems plausible to put her works within the tradition of critical pedagogy as found in the works of Paulo Freire and others.

Opis:
The modern Maya movement is an example of a new sort of indigenous cultural activism. The long lasting struggle for indigenous rights had finally led to the renegotiation of the social, legal and political order in countries like Guatemala and Mexico. Today we witness a vibrant indigenous activism in many fields, like education for example. This paper deals with the issue of multicultural education in the mentioned countries, but also it presents critical problems of a wider process – i.e. regaining cultural freedom after 500 years of marginalization.

Seeing is Believing. Anthropological Visions of Culture

Opis:
The main argument of the article tends towards the assumption that the visual sphere of culture is one of the most signi cant features of human agency and it is closely connected to the process of constructing particular worldviews. The scienti c discourse that follows the issue of visuality has therefore a long history of transitions and paradigm shifts, just like the cultural discourse in general. Cultural anthropology developed with the passing time also its own way of seeing things, especially when it comes to the conceptualization if cultural otherness. Visual anthropology, understood as an independent anthropological eld of study, gained with time much recognition amongst other social sciences, being part of a much broader visual turn in the social sciences. What is signi cant the contemporary image discourse shifts its momentum towards the „native’s point of view”, i.e. it recaptures the reality in terms of subjective and culturally conditioned ways of percepting the world.

Opis:
The cinematic genre of Blaxploitation is a significant example of how the popular culture influences certain identity patterns. In this case the this relation is being examined on the issue of contemporary Afro-American identities. This paper attempts to answer the question of the mechanism of identity construction in the context of new media, and cinema in particular. Thus the Blaxploitation movies are being regarded here as a phenomenon which is in large extent typical for other identity constructions in the context of a global cultural change occur-ring in the last decades in the West.

Opis:
In the present day, culture is a term which due to its complex nature, raises many theoretical and methodological questions. It is being perceived as something described more in plural terms rather than as a whole and a universal pattern, despite the impact made on the debate by the globalisation discourse. Therefore, it is presently an object of study in many academic disciplines. However, the discipline, which shows the most significant interest in the scientific investigation of culture, is anthropology. This paper examines the key issues in the understanding of culture within anthropology and its relation to pedagogy. The latter issue is being raised in order to highlight a relatively new anthropological subdiscipline, i.e. anthropology of education as a research perspective which could deliver certain answers to the problem of cultural diversity, multiculturalism, and multicultural education.
