The subject of this work is the use of social network analysis to increase the effectiveness of methods used to predict churn of telephony network subscribers. The social network is created on the basis of operational data (CDR records). The result of the analysis is customer segmentation and additional predictor variables. Proposed hybrid predictor employs set of regression models tuned to specific customer segments. The verification was performed on data obtained from one of the Polish operators.

Companies which decide on socially responsible activities usually take into consideration benefits including the marketing effects of CSR programmes. However, in order to achieve that, the information about the socially responsible activities of companies must be spread and reach the audience of the company. That includes stakeholders related to the company that might be interested in receiving information about the social initiatives undertaken by the company. These stakeholders are connected with the firm through the network of social ties (SN). The main goal of this article is to present a theoretical framework of roles that these networks of social ties play in the effective communication of CSR activities. This paper is divided into three parts. The first one concerns the problem of how to communicate the involvement of a company in social initiatives. The second one contains the description of possible communication processes and strategies. The last one presents the analysis of the social networks perspective and its main characteristics and, in conclusion, it summarizes the main benefits a company can gain by applying the SN concept to CSR communication in the area of attribution and information spread through various channels.

Traditionally aging research focused on the disintegration of social ties, however it has recently been observed that whom we contact has a larger impact on well-being (Cacioppo et al., 2009). The authors used data from the Social Networks II module of the International Social Survey Programme to investigate the role of social network components in successful aging. A factor analysis on 1221 Polish participants revealed 4 factors that were interpreted as: close, medium, and distant family, and friends. Well-being variables were most strongly related to contact with distant family, while SS variables were most strongly related to friends. Given SS was strongly related to distant family, while perceived SS was strongly related to close family. All family contacts decreased with age, though only distant family contacts were proactively managed. These results indicate the importance of distant family in Poland, in contrast to other countries.

For several years, social networking sites are growing in popularity in Poland. That is why, more and more organizations take action known as social media marketing. This also applies to universities. The situation on the market of higher educational services forces universities to enterprising behavior. Just as business organizations, usually universities take actions on Facebook, the most popular social networking site, which is used by nearly 70% of Polish Internet users. The purpose of this article is to analyze and evaluate the activity of Polish universities and their students on Facebook, to compare the activity of public and private universities, and to identify activities that universities should take on this portal. The analysis is based on the author’s own research: exploration of university’s sites (fanpages) on Facebook (conducted from January 2012) and a survey carried out among the students of two Polish universities.

In this article, we present an idea of combining social networking websites and modern mobile devices abilities to transfer social networking activity to a higher level. Nowadays, these devices and websites are used to offer ability of remote communication (phone calls, message exchange etc.), which potentially can be used to notify people about meetings in the real world. Since the current social network models do not provide enough information for such notification (social networking websites are examples of social networks) a new social network model that will be suitable for the above mentioned application is proposed and a new social platform that base on mobile devices is introduced. This platform can notify users when their friends are nearby. The paper presents the model and the simulation that verifies the approach.

Opis:
In a short period of time, Ukrainians became the second largest foreign community living in Portugal. Without historical ties linking the two countries, the ‘migration industry’ as well as positive feedback and assistance provided through pioneers’ social networks were decisive for the constitution and rapid expansion of the flow. However it slowed down in only few years and the economic crisis affecting Portugal since 2008 has introduced new limits to a possible future expansion. The goal of the paper is to provide insights with respect to the evolution of the flow, particularly looking at mechanisms of assistance and feedback provided and received within social networks, including the role of the ‘migration industry’. We explored quantitative and qualitative data collected through questionnaires applied to 306 Ukrainians and interviews conducted with 31 Ukrainians in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area in 2011 and 2012. The research confirms the importance of assistance received through social networks at different stages of the preparation of the move, upon arrival and throughout the settlement process in Portugal. We conclude that negative opinions on the present economic opportunities in Portugal have replaced initial positive perceptions about labour market opportunities and this information is being transmitted through social networks to Ukrainians back in Ukraine. We suggest that the significant decrease of the inflow can probably be explained by negative feedback and a more limited willingness to assist the migration of others. Future trends in the migratory flow of Ukrainian citizens to Portugal as well as the permanence of these immigrants in the country are uncertain. On the one hand, migrants are struggling to live through the crisis, while the recent social upheaval in Ukraine pushes them to leave.

Recent technological innovations (Web 2.0) in today’s society mean that a major socio-anthropological change is occurring. On the net, audiences can experience new forms of participation, share information and entertainment practices, and establish new relationships. This paper describes the main characteristics of Web 2.0 with specific reference to the Italian context and categories of users who use social networks (and their motivations), using the latest national survey data. This paper analyzes changes in the identity and culture of consumption, which thanks to social media are today expressed according to the logic of experience and performance. Through social media, performative consumption represents one of the most suitable way to describe the multiple aspects of the contemporary consumer’s identity.

The paper presents results of the research project that explored the mode in which Polish political parties use their Facebook profiles. The findings of the analysis prove that interactive and multimedia aspect of social networking is employed only in a limited degree. Party profiles are not used as a platform of the information on party activity distribution. Even basic contact data is not available on each of analyzed profiles. Moreover, as was expected, there is no clear association between the technical sophistication of the specific party profile and the position of the party on political market. Parties which are leaders of the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) use are not dominating in terms of both possessed resources and the role played in parliamentary politics.

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between the adoption of the social networks by teaching candidates and their loneliness. With this purpose in mind, 133 students from education faculties were involved in this study. In the study, the UCLA Loneliness Scale and the Social Networks Adoption Scale were applied to the students. After using the SPSS 18.0 program, the results from the scales were deduced using the Pearson Correlation, Independent t-Test, and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). A significant relationship between students’ scores of loneliness and the usage of online social networks was revealed. The conclusion is that the loneliness scores of the students increase according to the frequency students use social networks. In addition, it can be said that the loneliness situation of students and their adoption of social networks does not change according to the universities in which they study.

In this paper, I focused particular attention on the relationship between the structure and dynamics of complex networks. I am convinced of importance of measuring the structural properties of evolving networks in order to characterize how the connectivity of the investigating structures changes in time. Network measurement are therefore essential in my investigation. I intend to test how the non-stability of structure properties can be viewed as a factor that show abnormal state of the system (e.g. increasing of terrorism activity) modeled by complex networks. Complex networks are commonly modeled by means of simply or directed graphs. In some cases the use of graph to represent complex networks does not provide a complete description of the real-world systems under investigation. Consequently, I will formally introduce the hypernetwork concept as generalization for representing complex networks and will call them complex hyper-networks.

Internetowe portale społecznościowe – popularna forma komunikacji społecznej (np. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, nk.pl), to platformy kontaktu, tworzenia wizerunku, wymiany myśli i zdjęć. .
Social networking portals – a popular form of social communication (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, nk.pl) are platforms of contact, creating an image, exchanging thoughts and photos. Common application of them is the reason why they are also used to express aggression, use emo-tional abuse and propagate threats. The social service users, while being potential victims of criminal activity, are exposed to confidential or sensitive data leak or unauthorized access to the information published by them or even to spy activities. They can be harassed and exposed to their image being disseminated without their consent. It is easy for network criminals to hide and act on a mass scale among a large group of users. The result of harmful activity can be the theft of personal data or access data (e.g. to bank accounts) or the creation of botnets of accounts over which control has been taken. In the webpage environment it is easy to conduct attacks of socio-technical nature (phishing) using the users’ confidence, gullibility or inattention. To increase their reliability special devices have been created to search for and process data quickly. Database internet systems are exposed to threats to a large degree, since they can be effectively attacked mainly for the reason of software faults. Database applications show susceptibility to, among others, the attack with properly prepared SQL queries. Also, the non-protected references to objects, too poor confirmation mechanisms and session management mechanisms as well as server configuration errors are indicated as a frequent reason for the possibility of database system attacks. Social communication through the Internet creates also a threat of users’ tapping and free use of the information gathered. Numerous charges of this kind are addressed to the social portal ad-ministrators themselves. The users may also infringe the law being unaware of it, because they process personal data that are subject to special protection.

Previous research in social science established the existence of mutual relationship between cultural tastes and social networks. What is less known, however, is how this connectivity translates into tangible social benefits (social capital). By applying the resource generator tool, the article explores the extent to which access to different social resources (social capital) is related to pursuing different cultural activities, independent of social standing and network features. Empirically, the possibilities of locally representative survey data (N = 1010) from Poland (2017) are exploited. The analysis brings two main findings: (i) participation in elite culture is positively associated with better access to instrumental resources (lending money, job assistance), (ii) while popular culture is more relevant to “information and (cultural) influences” social capital and to general access to resources. The contribution of the study is to show that cultural consumption may assist in the accumulation of important social resources and thus contribute to solidifying social inequalities

This article addresses the question of what influences the opportunities for social mobility in the context of return migration to Albania from a meso-level perspective. It applies a network-theory-based analysis to 104 qualitative interviews with a diverse sample of returned migrants, conducted in Albania between 2019 and 2022. The interviews are clustered into three categories according to the stated economic need for migration. The analysis shows that the geographical dispersion, the support capacities and the influence of these networks on migration decision-making differ significantly between the three categories. Despite some dynamics, individual network embeddedness reflects the overall socio-economic and ethno-political stratifications of the origin society and distinctively shapes migrants’ modalities and means of migration, the opportunities for resource accumulation abroad and their ability to re-establish themselves after return. Thus, social networks mainly contribute to continuity rather than change in terms of social stratification, even over the course of migration(s) and return(s). Yet, these effects are mediating, not determining, outcomes and are context-dependent. Lastly, network effects differ not only between but also within the categories, depending, for example, on the gender or age of the migrant.

Conventional economic theories assume that competing firms act independently. This theoretical assumption is applied to economic policies and anti-trust legislation. In contrast, economic sociology describes competition as a special type of social action that is oriented towards others. More specifically, to remain in the market, competing firms monitor one another and cooperate by establishing inter-organisational social ties. This paper demonstrates that increasing market pressures, including higher levels of competition and stronger bargaining power among exchange partners, does not disrupt social ties but promotes them. Data for the analysis were collected in 2007 from 501 managers of retail chains and their suppliers in five Russia’s cities (Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, and Tyumen). The sample includes firms of different sizes that operate in the food and electronics sectors of the consumer market.
