Let f be a continuous function from $[0,a] × [0,β] × (ℝ^n)⁴$ into $ℝ^n$. Given $u₀,v₀ ∈ C⁰([0,β],ℝ^n)$, with f(0, x, ∫_0^x u₀(s)ds, ∫_0^x v₀(s)ds, u₀(x), v₀(x)) = v₀(x) for every x ∈ [0,β], consider the problem (P) { ∂²z/(∂t∂x) = f(t, x, z, ∂z/∂t, ∂z/∂x, ∂²z/(∂t∂x)),
$z(t,0) = ϑ_{ℝ^n}$, $z(0,x)=∫_0^x u₀(s)ds$, ∂²z(0,x)/(∂t∂x) = v₀(x). In this paper we prove that, under suitable assumptions, problem (P) has at least one classical solution that is local in the first variable and global in the other. As a consequence, we obtain a generalization of a result by P. Hartman and A. Wintner ([4], Theorem 1).

Clarke's generalized derivative $f^0(x,v)$ is studied as a function on the Banach algebra Lip(X,d) of bounded Lipschitz functions f defined on an open subset X of a normed vector space E. For fixed $x\in X$ and fixed $v\in E$ the function $f^0(x,v)$ is continuous and sublinear in $f\in Lip(X,d)$. It is shown that all linear functionals in the support set of this continuous sublinear function satisfy Leibniz's product rule and are thus point derivations. A characterization of the support set in terms of point derivations is given.

As a consequence we show that the dyadic integral of a ∞ function $f ∈ L_1$ is dyadically differentiable and its derivative is f a.e.

Unlike those for euclidean convex functions, the known characterizations for hyperbolically convex functions usually contain terms that are not holomorphic. This makes hyperbolically convex functions much harder to investigate. We give a geometric proof of a two-variable characterization obtained by Mejia and Pommerenke. This characterization involves a function of two variables which is holomorphic in one of the two variables. Various applications of the two-variable characterization result in a number of analogies with the classical theory of euclidean convex functions. In particular, we obtain a uniform upper bound on the Schwarzian derivative. We also obtain the sharp lower bound on |f'(z)| for all z in the unit disk, and the sharp upper bound on |f'(z)| when |z| ≤ √2 - 1.

In this paper the identification of generalized linear dynamical differential systems by the method of modulating elements is presented. The dynamical system is described in the Bittner operational calculus by an abstract linear differential equation with constant coefficients. The presented general method can be used in the identification of stationary continuous dynamical systems with compensating parameters and for certain nonstationary compensating or distributed parameter systems.

Opis:
In this study we are concerned with the problem of approximating a solution of a nonlinear equation in Banach space using Newton-like methods. Due to rounding errors the sequence of iterates generated on a computer differs from the sequence produced in theory. Using Lipschitz-type hypotheses on the mth Fréchet derivative (m ≥ 2 an integer) instead of the first one, we provide sufficient convergence conditions for the inexact Newton-like method that is actually generated on the computer. Moreover, we show that the ratio of convergence improves under our conditions. Furthermore, we provide a wider choice of initial guesses than before. Finally, a numerical example is provided to show that our results compare favorably with earlier ones.

We use inexact Newton iterates to approximate a solution of a nonlinear equation in a Banach space. Solving a nonlinear equation using Newton iterates at each stage is very expensive in general. That is why we consider inexact Newton methods, where the Newton equations are solved only approximately, and in some unspecified manner. In earlier works [2], [3], natural assumptions under which the forcing sequences are uniformly less than one were given based on the second Fréchet derivative of the operator involved. This approach showed that the upper error bounds on the distances involved are smaller compared with the corresponding ones using hypotheses on the first Fréchet derivative. However, the conditions on the forcing sequences were not given in affine invariant form. The advantages of using conditions given in affine invariant form were explained in [3], [10]. Here we reproduce all the results obtained in [3] but using affine invariant conditions.

For non-empty topological spaces X and Y and arbitrary families $\cal A$ ⊆ $\cal P(X)$ and $\cal B ⊆ \cal P(Y)$ we put $\cal C_{\cal A,\cal B}$={f ∈ $Y^X$ : (∀ A ∈ $\cal A$)(f[A] ∈ $\cal B)$}. We examine which classes of functions $\cal F$ ⊆ $Y^X$ can be represented as $\cal C_{\cal A,\cal B}$. We are mainly interested in the case when $\cal F=\cal C(X,Y)$ is the class of all continuous functions from X into Y. We prove that for a non-discrete Tikhonov space X the class $\cal F=\cal C$(X,ℝ) is not equal to $\cal C_{\cal A,\cal B}$ for any $\cal A$ ⊆ $\cal P(X)$ and $\cal B$ ⊆ $\cal P$(ℝ). Thus, $\cal C$(X,ℝ) cannot be characterized by images of sets. We also show that none of the following classes of real functions can be represented as $\cal C_{\cal A,\cal B}$: upper (lower) semicontinuous functions, derivatives, approximately continuous functions, Baire class 1 functions, Borel functions, and measurable functions.
