The extended Omont-Kaulakys-Ueda treatment of collisional effects on quasi-Rydberg states, in which the perturbation of the lower state is taken into account, is applied to mercury-argon system. The pressure shift coefficients of 6p-ns and 6p-nd spectral lines are calculated and compared with available experimental data.

Opis:
In any complex system at temperature T the absorption cross-section and fluorescent power at a given photon energy are connected by a simple relation if the system is in thermal equilibrium while occupying one particular electronic excited state. Although this situation is impossible in principle because of finite excited-state lifetimes, it is often approximated to the extent that the simple relation, which is expressed as a linear function of energy with slope -1/k_{B}T, holds in a variety of cases. (The usual symbols for Boltzmann's constant and absolute temperature are used.) Observed deviations are of two principal kinds: a slope characteristic of some temperature T* other than ambient, and departures from a single pure straight line. The latter may include seemingly random variations and in some cases multiple regions of straight-line behavior. We have recently introduced an effective temperature T*(E), derived from the actual local slope of the putative straight line at energy E, which turns out to be a very sensitive detector of deviations from the ideal and, we believe, from equilibrium in the excited state. Plots of T*(E) display a variety of features. An anomaly in the T*(E) spectrum of chlorophyll a can be analyzed on this model, indicating a second weakly fluorescent state about 70 meV below the well-known Q_{y} band. The cases of chlorophyll and many others are included in a selective review of applications of the universal relation to fluorescent systems.

Doppler broadening measurements performed by a slow positron beam on p-type Si samples implanted with He at 20 keV and at a fluence of 5×10$\text{}^{15}$ and 2×10$\text{}^{16}$ cm$\text{}^{-2}$ are reviewed and discussed. The evolution of the open volume defects distribution was studied as a function of isochronal and isothermal annealing of the samples. In the as implanted samples the majority of the open volume defects produced by implantation was passivated by He. The open volume defects density decreases, reaching a minimum at 250°C. In the 250-650°C temperature range there is an increase in defects due to the appearance of vacancy clusters. At the higher annealing temperatures (700-900°C) the vacancy clusters disappear only in the samples implanted at 5×10$\text{}^{15}$ cm$\text{}^{-2}$.

Using a laser-induced fluorescence method, detailed analysis of profiles of the $\text{}^{114}$Cd 326.1 nm line perturbed by krypton was performed which revealed departures from the ordinary Voigt profile. These departures are shown to be consistent with fits of experimental profiles to a speed-dependent asymmetric Voigt profile. Coefficients of the pressure broadening, shift, and collision-time asymmetry are determined and compared with those calculated in the adiabatic approximation for the van der Waals, Czuchaj-Stoll, and Morse potentials.

Shapes of self-broadened argon lines 687.1 nm (4d$\text{}_{5}$-2p$\text{}_{10}$), 703.0 nm (3s$\text{}_{5}$-2p$\text{}_{9}$), 750.3 nm (2p$\text{}_{1}$-1s$\text{}_{2}$) as well as the neon line 748.8 nm (3d$\text{}_{3}$-2p$\text{}_{10}$) emitted from glow discharges at low pressures were analysed using a Fabry Perot interferometer. We showed that the dissociative recombination of Ar$\text{}_{2}^{+}$ (or Ne$\text{}_{2}^{+}$) molecular ions which gives rise to the density of non-thermalized atoms, may be regarded as the main process responsible for the distortion of the profiles of the above lines. The distorted profiles were analysed as superposition of the Ballik profile for thermalized atoms and the modified Ballik profile for non-thermalized atoms. The Lorentzian and Gaussian widths as well as relative densities of non-thermalized and thermalized atoms were determined.

Two positron techniques have been applied to study dynamics of oxygen precipitation in Czochralski-grown silicon, annealed under high (up to 1.4 GPa) pressure. Lifetime measurements were performed with 180 ps resolution; Doppler broadening with a variable-energy slow-positron beam. Different thermal treatings rise the mean lifetime of positrons from 222 ps in as-grown samples up to 227 ps. In samples with a high (up to 85%) amount of oxygen precipitated, an intermediate (550-800 ps) lifetime is observed.

We report total cross-section measurements for positron scattering on cyclic hydrocarbons: benzene, aniline, and cyclohexane. Measurements were done by an absolute transition method in the energy range 1.5-20 eV (0.4-20 eV for cyclohexane). High cross-sections for all measured molecules were observed at low energies. In the case of cyclohexane the cross-section in the zero energy limit tends to a constant value. In aniline a weakly accented peak slightly above the positronium formation threshold is observed. Similar but less visible bump was observed in the case of benzene. Measurement of total cross-sections in nitrogen and argon used for calibration of the apparatus are also presented.

Opis:
Starting from experimental cross-sections for positron scattering in argon and nitrogen, we examine different energy ranges. In the zero-energy limit the cross-section falls with energy and can be described by modified effective range theory for polarization potential. In a few eV range the cross-sections are constant vs. energy. As far as it is possible to force the elastic scattering phase shifts in a way that both experimental differential cross-sections are reproduced and the total cross-section remains constant in energy, such a model lacks the physical justification. Only the virtual-positronium model, developed recently by Gribakin, reproduces a constant dependence of the total cross section in a few eV energy range.

Doppler-broadening measurements of the electron-positron annihilation line in twenty six elements are presented. The adopted coincidence technique allows to reduce the background and point out the contribution of positron annihilation with core electrons. The changes of the high momentum contribution is presented for selected examples and a semiempirical analysis of the dependence on electronic structure is performed. Measured data are in a good agreement with recent theoretical calculations and can be used to identification of impurities surrounding open volume defects.
