Opis:
This work is a continuation of the article (Biernacki, Czesak 2013), which examined the most recent results (2012) of the Program for International Student Assessment. It turned out that Polish students have significantly improved their results in general subjects, but have great difficulties with creative thinking (the results are below the median). Analysis of the results of examinations in mathematics for students of the first year of two departments confirmed that students have great difficulty with problem solving. The author proposes to encourage students through the use of exercises and labs to take more time to solve tasks that require creative thinking, especially those relating to real-world problems of physics and economics.

Opis:
Measures of inequality, properly adapted, often tend to be used as a tool to address the issue of disproportionality. The most popular of them, such as the Gini or Atkinson coefficient, or entropy coefficient can, under certain circumstances, act as measures of disproportionality. However, one must specify precisely what is to be measured and interpret the results consistently. In this paper we analyze what confusion or outright errors can be committed when using inequality coefficients. The presented analysis is aimed at the Gini coefficient, however, the problem also applies to the rest of the coefficients.

Opis:
Mathematics is one of the main subjects conducted in the first year of economic studies. At the Faculty of Applied Informatics at the University of Economics in Kraków, mathematics accompanies students not only in the first year, but also throughout the entire course of studies, being an essential factor of either their further success or problems in studying. Therefore, both the proper preparation in this field acquired in secondary school, as well as the awareness of the importance of this subject, are essential factors influencing the efficiency of the undertaken studies. In this article, I will present the results of the survey research conducted among the first-year students at the Faculty of Applied Informatics at the UEK on the awareness of the necessity for mathematical knowledge in the process of efficient studying. I will also discuss the results of determining their actual mathematical skills acquired in secondary school on the basis of the research conducted in the academic years 2011/2012, 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 with the use of exemplary exercises from the matura final exam at the basic and extended level. On this basis, the conclusions serving as the starting point for further research on mathematical classes in the first year of studies have been drawn. The obtained information can prove useful for academic teachers in the proper conducting of classes on mathematical subjects. The article also contains general reflections and conclusions on the mathematical education of students of economic studies.

affect in mathematics education
math anxiety
underachievement syndrome
Opis:
In one of his latest articles, Fortus (2014), points out that “when one considers the centrality of affect to teaching and learning and the broad range of topics that are related to affect, it is concerning that it has received relatively so little attention” (Fortus 2014, p. 821). In order to support his position, he provides an overview of the research on affect in science education that has been published in several journals (JRST, SciEd, and IJSE) between 2001 and 2011. The author also hypothesizes why affect has been under-attended to by the science education research community so far. And the conclusion he arrives at is that affect remains in the shadow of researchers’ attention partly due to the existing “international trend towards standardization of schooling and high-stakes testing” (p. 822). The main purpose of this article is to emphasize that affect does play an important role also in learning mathematics and for this reason it should be considered as one of the core dimensions of mathematics education. The first part of this article provides examples of two phenomena: math anxiety and the underachievement syndrome in learning mathematics, where affective determinants are unquestionable. Subsequently, we shift the focus from these particular issues to the general description of what affect is, what meaningful concepts it contributes in the field of research on mathematics education, and how the research community can benefit from the approach it promotes. Finally, we present some new directions for researchers and teachers that may result in an increase of the quality and efficiency of both teaching and learning mathematics.

PISA – Programme for International
Student Assessment
Opis:
This paper discusses the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment and the results obtained by students of the Wroclaw University of Economics. Special emphasis was placed on mathematics. Polish students obtained much better results in the latest PISA edition in maths, science and reading when compared to previous editions and to the average results calculated for the OECD countries. Despite this fact the scores of Polish students in the Creative Problem Solving test were much worse than the average for the OECD countries. It is worth noting that the Polish education system has been undergoing dynamic changes which are correlated with political changes and with the increase of social need for participating in decision-making in the education of the young generations. Unfortunately, the pressure to achieve good results in exams means that teachers have started to teach test solving instead of problem solving. This was also shown in the edition of the PISA exam. The authors of the article propose to change the structure of the didactic process, especially at universities, in a way that would make it possible to increase the number of exercises and laboratory hours.

quality of education
higher education sector in Poland
Opis:
In the last twenty years the number of students and universities in Poland has increased more than four times. This quantitative increase has meant for the didactics of mathematics the need to reduce the level of education. Currently, this upward trend is in reverse and the higher education sector, practically in all Europe, can expect reductions. The current efforts of policy makers and academic staff are focused on improving the quality of education in order – among other reasons – to stay competitive. Shifting focus from quantity and efficiency to quality of education can be an opportunity but also a threat. The problem is how to understand the quality of education and how it can be put into pedagogical practice. Maths education has its own specific conditions. Taking them into account may result not only in improving the quality of didactics of mathematics, but more widely – improving the quality of what is understood as the process of higher education. The article gives an overview of the changes taking place in the Polish higher education sector over the last two decades and of the various definitions of the quality of education. It also presents some conclusions on the relation between the interpretation of the quality of education and didactics of mathematics.

This study presents the results of research using an eye-tracking technique which enables following eyeball movements while solving a scientific task. Also presented is an analysis of the visual attention for participants (further called subjects) of a different mathematical experience while solving a mathematics test task. The aim of the research is to determine the profile of methods of solution of tasks which require the analysis of a diagram. The research opens new cognitive possibilities in mathematics didactics by showing the utility of the eye-tracking technique in a deeper recognition of the processes of learning and teaching Maths.

Using selected assignments from admission tests for the Wrocław University of Economics during 1993-2004 and the results of the examinations in mathematics, the authors show the need to implement the teaching of problems. The paper includes the solutions to problems from admission tests with comments regarding the most typical mistakes made by students. Our findings agree with the results of the PISA 2012 results in Creative Problem Solving, where Polish 15-year-old students scored below the median, ranked 27th among 40 countries, in spite of being ranked 8th in mathematics among 34 OECD countries.
