Opis:
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that theory-guided public relations practice is more likely to contribute to socially responsible behaviours by organizations than public relations approaches that are based solely on the emphasis on skills and the elaboration of “techniques,” and, to be frank, solely on the mythology of “best practice.” Consequently, theory-guided public relations may be better suited to bridge the gap between service for an organization and service for society. The article sets out with a short historical overview of the relationships between public relations theory and practice. It then goes on developing a methodological and empirical context designed to show connections between theory and practice. Furthermore, the paper highlights diff erent types of practitioners. Finally, a summary including prospects closes the article. Due to this, the following research question confirms these assumptions: how and why can theory-guided public relations contribute to socially responsible behaviours by practitioners?

The article is a summary of three quantitative research projects carried out in the years 2017–2018 taking into account a set of analogous questions. Their collective aggregation allows the attempt to present the profile of a Polish PR specialist with the indication of the main activities undertaken while performing daily professional duties. The research has shown that media relations and e-PR play a key role in everyday professional work. Nevertheless, a PR specialist in Poland has to deal with many task areas, which are often related to the dynamic development of new technologies, such as relations with influencers. In the analyses, the key diagnostic element was the measurement of professional experience and information regarding employment aspects. Respondents constituted both specialists working in PR agencies as well as in other domestic companies and institutions. The article contains a list of activities presented in statistical terms that are related to work in the PR industry.

This article provides a theoretical conceptualization of the role of public relations in society based on the “organic theory” of public relations and on Luhmann’s systems theory as well as on the concept of trust. In a postmodern, hypercomplex society, we claim that the main role of public relations is to strengthen system interactions through the creation of trust among systems. To enhance, maintain and ensure trust, public relations practitioners must think, not only strategically, but “metastrategically,” beginning with a normative theory of society that is built on the foundation of existing social theory, e.g. Luhmann, but also on contemporary social theory that must be built within a framework of communication technology.

One of the questions to be addressed in public relations is that of how to measure the stakeholders’ perceptions of an organization. This paper applies this debate to government public relations: it analyzes public perceptions of the Spanish national government performance and its im- plications for governmental public relations. Results of a regression analysis show that in assessing governments, citizens are not only influenced by ideology but they also look at environmental conditions; other public policies (such as education and employment) load higher than economy in explain- ing overall government performance; and evaluation of different public policies shows that citizens attribute responsibilities exonerating the government from what they think is not of its responsibility or is out of its control. Based on these results, this research finally highlights the importance of understanding what drives the public image of governments and deals with some implications in the conceptualization and practice of government public relations.

This article examines the relationship between politics and public relations, based on recent developments in Sweden and Norway. It has become increasingly common for PR firms to offer well-paid job opportunities for former politicians. Then, after some years as advisors in public affairs, including lobbying activity, some of them return to politics as members of the government, press officers or advisors. The article discusses the background for this development, and poses some questions concerning integrity and the possible consequences for democracy.

Opis:
Public relations and its techniques and methods stand as an intermediary between an organization on the one hand, and the corresponding public or publics on the other. A contradiction is implicitly construed, namely that PR serving an organization’s needs can by no means be serving the needs of the public(s) or vice versa. Presumably, PR which serves an organization’s interests is often times not true and seeks to project the best possible image. The public interest in PR, however, takes aim at the truth, the organization’s self, the authentic core. Nowadays, when speaking of authenticity, one traditionally differentiates between true being and mere image/deceitful appearance. Organizational communication’s challenge is that suspicious (self-serving) interests of the subsystems such as politics and business and, thus, inevitable deficits in truthfulness and sincerity are imputed. However, this paper (theoretically and practically) establishes why authentic communication is impossible and unnecessary at the same time and might even be a risk factor. Correspondingly, it also explores new perspectives for a different understanding of how to achieve corporate authenticity without disregarding legitimate rhetorical options and without being caught in a strict dichotomy of truth and falsehood.

The article is based on two basic theses. The first one involves a conviction that professional public relations does not exist without the observance of a code of conduct. No other issue is more important in PR than ethics — business ethics and ethics of people running the business. Without them the concept of PR will face the same fate as propaganda. The second thesis concerns a critical approach towards frequent, at least in Poland, manifestations of ignorance towards public relations philosophical genesis and ethos. That is why the author’s aim is to convince the reader that public relations is able to develop itself, provided that it is not subjected to marketing, despite the fact that it owes marketing a lot.

For public relations officers the last years were momentous. Changes in the surrounding life dictated also changes in the public relations (PR) practice. The birth of a so-called network society was signifi cant not only for different information technology and computer-related professions, but also for communication science, including public relations, from a larger perspective. Talking about public relations we are mostly talking about managing communication and about relations born as a result of the managed communication flow. From a historical perspective communication and relations management means quite often a kind of use of power. At this point the existential question today is — how to manage communication and relations in the new situation — in the society which is guided by social networks where power is not always at the “top” of hierarchy anymore, but is “down” in the networks. Who has power, and who and how will control communication processes in the society of “mass self-communicators” (Castells, 2007), which is designed and created by authors who are writing and expressing their ideas through social media, using their right of speech more than ever and which is no longer easily controlled and managed by others — authorities, press officers, public relations managers, censors, etc.

PR increases the reflexivity of organizations, thereby providing a central opportunity for learning. While this consideration is implicitly contained in many definitions and theories relating to PR, organizational learning has until now remained a “hidden topic” in international PR research. This is all the more surprising when we consider that learning is relevant to PR on two counts at least: first, the aforementioned role of PR as a central learning opportunity within an organization. PR identifies stakeholder demands and develops strategies to help ensure the legitimacy of the organization. This will be referred to as legitimation-based learning. Second, PR learns with respect to its own methods and skills. This will be referred to as method-based learning. This article will present a theoretical framework for legitimation-based and method-based learning. Then, the initial results of an online survey (N = 121) that examines selected issues relating to this approach will be presented.

This conceptual paper focuses on intellectual influencer concept to offer a differentiation tool for influencer marketing activities. First, influencer marketing is explained from the traditional point of view. Secondly, the historical development process of the public intellectual concept which was formerly a subject of non-marketing disciplines such as journalism, sociology, and philosophy is discussed. Subsequently, the relationship between these two concepts together with influencer marketing and related marketing communication activities are evaluated. Finally, marketing-related areas where intellectual influencers can produce content are elaborated. This study could open a fresh field in academic research by bringing a new dimension to influencer marketing. Also, it can offer a noteworthy alternative for businesses in terms of differentiation, attracting attention and reaching target markets.

This article contributes to the discussion on societal changes and their impact on communication disciplines by focusing on public relations and its role in contemporary global society. The thesis is that the public relations profession has been affected by contemporary societal changes that challenge the existing body of knowledge and its underpinning theories. To understand the role of public relations in 21st century global societies and pursuing future public relations theorizing, the authors argue it is paramount to comprehend which factors at macro, meso, and micro levels lie beneath the substantial changes in today’s global society. The article presents and reflects on four major macro trends of contemporary global society and concludes with suggestions for future directions for public relations scholarship and practice that are rooted in the concept of community and the idea of being part of and at the service of a community.

The aim of the article is to analyse the practice of EU structural funds projects’ publicity in Lithuania, concentrating on the issue of the so called “paid articles,” used by many of the EU fund- ed projects. It is considered to be a negative practice, since in this case a big part of the information on EU funded projects is presented in a cost ineffective way. It might also reinforce the tendencies in the media to expect companies or public institutions to pay for a publication instead of relying on ethical relationships with public relations sources. The article attempts to show how the publicity measures of EU structural funds projects have adapted to the existing practices and have reinforced them.

The goal of this study was to explore the nature and variations of media bribery practices, as Ukrainian media practitioners perceive them. Three focus group discussions were conducted with Ukrainian editors and leading journalists. The qualitative data provided evidence of the existence of both direct and indirect infl uences at three levels: interpersonal, intra-organizational, and interorganizational. Although Ukrainian journalists consider media non-transparency to be unethical, they tend to justify direct and indirect infl uences. Bribery on an interpersonal level is often related to the personal decision of each media professional and is connected with personal professionalism, responsibility and reputation. Nevertheless, journalists feel less responsible for the practices of indirect influences on both intra- and inter-organizational levels. Th ey perceive them happening beyond their personal decisions and that is why they rarely counteract them.
