The objective of the study is to analyse the global market of air freight transport. In view of the vast scope of the subject, the issues were presented, to a large extent, on the basis of existing airports.

Opis:: For the entire period of state construction in Ukraine, the strategy of stable economical growth of country’s freight potential has been practically ignored. Despite world’s freight statistics being systematic, there is practically no established methodology to assess its sustainable development in the times of globalization. Typically, all that is available are in-sights into certain aspects of freight market parameters formation. Thus, this article focuses on systematization of the general principles of world’s marine trade development and evaluation of the most realistic directions for establishing Ukraine as a full-scale maritime state.

Opis:: The outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic and the actions that all countries took in its aftermath all over the world in the first quarter of 2020 and later, i.e., during lockdowns and other restrictive measures, introducing a short and medium-term freezing of economic activity, had a strong impact on their economies and, consequently, also on the global economy. They hit seriously its particularly sensitive sectors, such as industry, trade and transport. The aim of undertaken research is to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on the functioning of maritime transport sector as well as to indicate its consequences for the global supply chains between 2020 and 2021 (first quarter). The research is mainly focused on assessing the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on the global shipping and especially container one that is contemporarily the most vital link of the global intermodal land-sea supply chains. The analyses take into account the adaptive measures taken by ship operators and other individual parties being an integral link of the global supply chains with an aim to mitigate the effects of radical slowdown in industrial and global trade activity. The research was based on the analyses, reports and several business information carried out by specialized international organizations as well as ship carriers and logistics providers. The obtained research results indicate the need to reconfigure global logistics supply chains and increase their resilience by introducing new digital solutions. It is high time to introduce new smart, green digital supply chains and subsequently to reconfigure them much more towards the regional trade and economic relations and ties among countries (reshoring). Such activities aiming at rebuilding the logistic supply chains may at the same time change the presently existing business environment in global maritime shipping, enforcing not only changes in ship owners’ business models but also serious structural alterations on the shipping freight markets.

Opis:: The Polish market for rail freight services belongs to a group of markets with a relatively high level of liberalization. Strong competition on the Polish freight market, forcing the search for new sources of strategic advantage, is leading to processes of consolidation, merging and acquisition. There are high fees for access to the infrastructure, despite its relatively low quality of performance. Opportunities for rail-related international exchange are not being taken, the geographical location of Poland is not being taken advantage of and the quality of the services provided is low. An important role in the intensification of rail transport infrastructure is the condition of the railway network. The modernization of these networks by 2011 has improved the condition of the Polish railway infrastructure. The structure of the rail freight market by weight of cargo in Poland, the structure of the polish freight market, the dynamics of changes in the size of cargo in the years from 2006 to 2011 according to transported mass relative to the size of the cargo in 2004, advantages of rail freight services, problems with the development of the rail freight market are presented in the paper.

Problemy te będą przedmiotem niniejszego omówienia ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kolejowych przewozów towarowych jako istotnego sektora gospodarki.
Introducing competition into the Polish rail market remains one of its most widely discussed topics because the market liberalisation process has not been completely efficient. One may enumerate various reasons for such an outcome. These include: the improper restructuring of the national incumbent rail operator (Polskie Koleje Państwowe), barriers to infrastructure access and insufficient powers of the regulatory authority. The above mentioned issues are discussed throughout the paper. The rail freight market, as a strategic sector for the national economy, is analysed in details.

Opis:: The intermodal transport segment is a transport market of enormous opportunities. Fast economic development and the related change in transport needs influences the dynamic increase of demand for transport services in combined system, including the use of rail transportation. The transit geographic situation of our country as the eastern European Union border and situation of Polish sea harbours on the north south in the Eastern European Transport Corridor are additional assets. Despite many assets and growth dynamics of the intermodal transport, their share in general transport volume has still been marginal. The intermodal transport segment in Poland requires sustainable development by means of investment outlays as well, e.g. in container terminal, logistic centres and rolling stock, and furthermore efficient support schemes of at least over a decade horizon. Operation of relevant quality line infrastructure of rail transport and nodal infrastructure indispensable for units handling at the junction of road and rail transport makes up a condition for the intermodal transport development. From the cargo rail transport point of view, provision of relevant rail corridors capacity and ensuring satisfactory speed of freight trains are most important.

Opis:: The main subject of research involves the global freight market in the sector of container shipping, and in particular the mechanism for setting up freight rates. The aim of research is to identify and analyse the features and characteristics typical of this market, resulting from the character of market mechanism, as well as to indicate factors which determine market fluctuations and evaluate its impact for the carriers and shippers. Moreover, the causes and effects of fluctuations in effective demand and potential supply in the sector of freight market were identified in terms of their impact on freight rates. The analysis includes three main types of container markets, existing today on a global scale, and characterizes the strategies and modes of behaviour of global container operators undertaking activity on these markets. By applying the theory of mass random service and queueing theory to examine the container freight market mechanisms the method of freight rates short-term forecasting was presented which can be used as an instrument for taking decisions in the sector of global maritime logistics.

Opis:: Zwiększenie udziału transportu kolejowego w obsłudze przewozów pozostaje od ponad dwóch dekad jednym z głównych priorytetów unijnej polityki transportowej. Środkiem, który w świetle założeń teoretycznych umożliwi realizację tego celu, jest kreacja otwartego w skali całej Wspólnoty i konkurencyjnego rynku kolejowego. Przyjęty w UE model strukturalny wspólnego rynku kolejowego zakłada funkcjonowanie wydzielonego podmiotu, zarządzającego infrastrukturą kolejową i udostępniającego ją niezależnym przewoźnikom za odpłatnością. Operatorzy przewozów kolejowych, po spełnieniu jednakowych wymogów dopuszczających do zawodu i do rynku mają równe prawa dostępu do sieci, a także nie są obciążani obowiązkami służby publicznej bez odpowiedniej finansowej rekompensaty. Powinnością władz państwowych jest stworzenie sprawiedliwych reguł funkcjonowania rynku oraz zadbanie o utrzymanie i rozwój sieci kolejowej.

Opis:: This article focuses on the liberalization process of the railway freight transport market in Poland between 1997 and 2009. It shows that the increase in traffic and the fall in prices that occurred in this period took place not because of ‘effective regulation’ but despite its absence. This can indicate that introducing competition in railway freight transport could be profitable where there is significant demand for bulk and containers freight services and the railway infrastructure is well-developed.
L’article se concentre sur le processus de libéralisation du marche de transport ferroviaire de fret en Pologne dans les années 1997-2009. Il montre que l’augmentation du trafic et la baisse des prix dans cette période, n’ont pas eu lieu à cause de la “régulation efficace”, mais malgré son absence. Cela peut indiquer que l’introduction de la concurrence dans le transport ferroviaire de fret pourra être profitable s’il y a de la demande pour les services du trafic en vrac et par conteneur et si l’infrastructure ferroviaire est bien-developpée.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono definicje transportu intermodalnego, omówiono sytuację towarowego transportu kolejowego w Polsce na tle innych gałęzi transportu i dokonano analizy rozwoju rynku kolejowych przewozów intermodalnych w naszym kraju na przestrzeni ostatnich lat.
Long-term economic growth and dynamic development of trade have result in increased transport operations, carried out mainly by road. Excessive traffic on the roads has negative consequences for the environment and also for society. For several years, efforts were aimed at mitigating roads and transferring part of freight from road to more environmentally friendly modes of transport, including rail transport. This article presents the definitions of intermodal transport, discusses the situation of rail freight transport in Poland comparing to other modes of transport. The authors also describe the development of the rail intermodal transport in our country in recent years.

Opis:: In the article, the authors presented the technical, technological, legal, and business conditions of the functioning of rail freight transport in the international transport market. The authors analyzed the literature, considering this area's most important national and international normative documents. An essential element of the considerations is the presented schematic concepts of models for various forms of rail freight transport. The main ways of organizing freight transport at the eastern border were also indicated. The reasons for barriers that negatively affect the competitiveness of rail transport with other modes of transportation, especially in international transport, were shown. The rail transport market has undergone many changes recently, including investments in railway infrastructure, the growing importance of intermodal transport, and support for a more sustainable transport system. The article indicates the reasons for the occurrence of barriers that negatively affect the possibilities of further development of railways and the competitiveness of rail transport with other modes of transportation, especially in international transport.
