Opis:
Few readers will be surprised to learn that the Dutch language was still used in North America after the year 1664, when governor Petrus Stuyvesant had to surrender the Dutch colony of Nieuw-Nederland (New Netherland), including the city of Nieuw Amsterdam (which later on became New York), to the English. Less widely known is the fact that spoken Dutch remained in use far longer than people generally assume, continuing into the first decades of the twentieth century, when its very last speakers died. The production of literary texts in this American variety of Dutch appears to have been fairly limited. From a linguistic perspective, it is interesting to see how the Dutch language in the United States developed into a variety in its own right, particularly during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This much later variety, known as “Leeg Duits” or “Low Dutch” was definitely not a creole dialect, as some scholars have thought it to be. Such considerations invite comparison with another language descended from a form of “colonial Dutch”: Cape Dutch or Afrikaans. I have selected a number of topics that are relevant to the study of Low Dutch, which are presented in a more or less chronological order. First, I focus on the “discovery” of “Leeg Duits,” (i.e. the variety of Dutch spoken by the descendants of the former seventeenth century Dutch immigrants) by travellers. Subsequent topics to be addressed include a bilingual textbook, the pivotal and sociohistorically interesting role of the Dutch Reformed Church in linguistic matters, and the various types of Dutch that were current in the eighteenth century. After sketching the provenance of the peculiar term “Leeg Duits,” I discuss the sole undisputed research report to be based on fi eld work with Low Dutch informants. Low Dutch remained recognisable as a variety of Dutch till until the bitter end, so to speak. “Tenacity” appears to have been one of the salient features of Low Dutch, which to be sure is certainly extinct by now.

Polish equivalents of Dutch euphemisms
Opis:
There are quite numerous taboo words in Dutch which, because of sexual, religious or political reasons, are passed over in linguistic communication. Instead of taboo words one uses euphemisms. This research paper concerns euphemisms which are used in order to substitute taboo words; some of them are phraseologisms. At first, they are divided on the basis of Roberta Rada’s criteria into metaphorical, metonymical, and synecdochic, then the Dutch euphemisms under investigation are further subdivided into the following three types of equivalence in Polish: full, partial, and descriptive. What may seem striking is the fact that euphemistic phraseology of the equivalence type I and II is the most numerous, while the equivalence of type III occur rather seldom. The investigated corpus contains 77 euphemisms. Equivalence to Type I includes 29 examples, which represent 37.66% of the analysed corpus. Equivalence to Type II includes 37 items, which represent 48.05% of the corpus, and the equivalence to Type III—11 euphemistic expressions, which form 14.28% of the analysed corpus. The results seem to prove that the non-genetic relationship between the Nl. and Pl. is also reflected in the low correlation between euphemistic phraseology of these two languages. Another fact important in this context is that to Pl. have the same meaning and the same imagery.

Opis:
This article intends to trace the evolution of the Dutch songbooks and emblem books from the mid-16th century till the mid-17th century, with special emphasis on the period between 1600 and 1620, when a cross-over genre comprising both songs (or other lyrical genres) and emblems, made its appearance. If during the mid-to-late 16th century both the emblem genre and the songbook genre manifested itself within a separate, clearly distinct publishing tradition, then from the onset of the 17th century the northern Netherlands witnessed the emergence of a new type of publication: richly illustrated emblem books which contained songs and other types of lyrical poetry. In this article I first present a brief outline of the two genres (emblem books and vernacular songbooks), mentioning their main exponents, the functional features of the publications and the main aspects of their reception, until creation of a cross-over genre in Amsterdam around the year 1600. The innovative publishing concept of a dual songbook-emblem book pioneered by Amsterdam printers such as Dirck Pietersz Pers, was quickly adopted by other publishers, writers and editors. Books combining emblem imagery with songs became popular among young wealthy buyers among whom companionship went hand in hand with the enjoyment of various forms of oral literature. There were different functional approaches to the problem of combining emblemata with other genres, the most important of which are reviewed in this article. Some authors (e.g. Pieter Cornelisz Hooft) created a book comprising two symmetrical parts (emblems and songs or sonnets). Sometimes these parts were not symmetrical, but they nevertheless formed clearly distinct sections, for example in Roemer Visscher Sinnepoppen or Dirck Pietersz Pers Bellerophon. Other authors (e.g. Gerrit Hendrik van Breughel in Cupidos lusthof or Jan van der Veen in Zinne-beelden) placed the emblems at the beginning of each chapter of his book, where each of these chapters in itself comprised of a variety of lyrical genres, including songs. In this article the emblem genre is presented from the perspective of oral literature, pointing to the existence of a not yet entirely explored borderline area between emblems and song culture in the Northern Netherlands. Two examples of emblems from cross-over books of songs and emblemata analyzed in detail in this article are Gerrit Hendrik van Breughel emblem [18] from Cupidos lusthof (Den Pool,..), on standards of courtly behavior in the Commonwealth of Poland, and Jan van der Veen emblem [2] from Zinne-beelden (Trouwt vryicheyt aen vre…) which deals with questions of war and peace in relation to the identity of the Dutch Republic.

This study investigates pupils’ anxiety and enjoyment in the classroom when learning a second or foreign language. The particularity of this study lies in the comparison of two target languages (English and Dutch) in two educational contexts (CLIL and non-CLIL) at different instruction levels (primary and secondary education). While most research on content and language integrated learning (CLIL) focuses on English as a target language, the Belgian context calls for a comparison with the language of the “other” community, in this case Dutch. Data were collected from 896 pupils in French-speaking Belgium through a self-report questionnaire measuring pupils’ anxiety and enjoyment in the classroom, along with background characteristics. Results indicate that while CLIL pupils experience significantly less anxiety than their non-CLIL counterparts, English learners report significantly less anxiety and more enjoyment than Dutch learners. This suggests an important role of the target language for emotional engagement in the classroom and calls for further investigation into the role of target language perceptions. Finally, the interactions with instruction level reveal that while primary school pupils report stronger emotions, the effects of CLIL and English are much larger at secondary level.

“Before filling in the application form, please read carefully these instructions.” Forms, Intercultural Communication and Transnational Dutch Studies Almost everyone is familiar with various types of formal forms. The language as well as the structure of such texts differ, however, from the standards and rules of every-day communication, which, in consequence, may lead to many problems. Reading the instructions to the form may not always constitute great help or assistance. It is very common that people, who are obliged to fill in the particular form, come across different terms or sophisticated grammatical structures they do not know or at least do not fully comprehend. Let us add to all these problem a notion of a foreign language, and as a consequence, a foreign culture for which the form is prepared, we may be facing an insurmountable barrier – both linguistic and cultural. This is a matter which, nowadays, modern philologists have to face. Particular intercultural problems or diffi culties which may additionally constrain the communication should also be overcome. The first part of the article expounds upon some of the problems that people, who have to fill in the Dutch forms, may encounter. The second part of the article discusses how the official forms may be introduced to the educational curriculum as a didactic means that helps in the process of both language teaching and learning.

This article looks into the representation of Polish immigrants in contempo-rary Dutch film, with a particular focus on the prominent role of domestic set-tings and familial dysfunctions in the pictures involved. As the analysis reveals, many of the films under discussion bring into view troubled Dutch protago-nists (especially men) who suffer from degradation in the familial and social sphere. The Polish characters in turn tend to be instrumentalized as (potential) agents of change (or rather “restoration”), taking up traditional familial and domestic roles that are no longer fulfilled by Dutch characters.

Opis:
The article focuses on the phenomenon of the mobility, isolation, and differentiation of the emigrant groups or mobile workers, whose status is being regulated by the European law and the internal law of the acquiring country. The example chosen for analysis is the Netherlands. Different categories of Dutch immigrants, solutions used on the Dutch labor market, and elements of the political discourse oriented around this issue have all been presented here. The factors which influence the observable differentiation are: history (migration from the former colonial countries), open European market (migration in order to find work, including the increasing percentage of Polish employees), and the international industrial space. This means that expatriates are a special group among the mobile workers (these are highly qualified workers of the international corporations or institutions not connected with the industry). From the Dutch point of view, finding an efficient and acceptable adaptation policy, which will be beneficial for every social group coexisting in this country is an important challenge.

Wyodrębniono i przeanalizowano rozmaite typy ikonograficzne w ramach omawianego gatunku. Zjawisko to, niemające precedensu w Europie, starano się wyjaśnić i ująć w szerokim kontekście, obejmującym np. czynniki kulturowe i społeczne, stosunek siedemnastowiecznych Holenderek i Holendrów do dzieci, piśmiennictwo, zwyczaje i wartości rodzinne.
A given paper presents and discusses the Dutch phenomenon of portraying dead children from the 16th to 19th century in painting and drawing (75 representations altogether).  Various iconographical variations in this genre have been specified and analysed. An attempt has been made to explain this quite an unprecedented in Europe practice by relating it to a wide context, like e.g. cultural and social factors, the attitude of the 17th century Dutchwomen and Dutchmen towards children, writings, social habits and family values.
