For some variants of the finite element method there exist points having a remainder value or a derivation remainder remarkably less than those given by global norms. This phenomenon is called superconvergence and the points are called superconvergence points. The generalized problem corresponding to (1) is as follows: Let Hk(Ω) be Sobolev space and Hk0(Ω) the completion of the space C∞0(Ω) with norm ∥⋅∥k,Ω. Find u∈H10(Ω) such that for each v∈H10(Ω), (2) a(u,v)=(f,v)0 holds, where a(u,v)=∫Ω(∑n|α|=0aα(x)DαuDαv)dx, (f,v)0=∫Ωf(x)v(x)dx, Dα=Dα11⋯Dαnn,1.5pt Dαiiu=∂αiu/∂xαii, i=1,n¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯. The approximate problem of the finite element variant considered is the following: Find uh∈Vh such that (3) for all v∈Vh, a(uh,v)=(f,v)0. The main result is the theorem: Let ai∈C(Ω¯), D1ai,D2ai∈L∞(Ω),i=1,2,∥σ∥∞L(Ω)≤σ,f∈L2(Ω). Suppose the eigenvalues of the operator L are different from zero, and u∈H4(Ω)∩H10(Ω). Then there exists h0 such that for h≤h0, h2∑P∈G|grad(u−uh)(P)|≤Ch3(|u|3+|u|4), where u and uh are the solutions of problems (2) and (3), respectively, and C is some constant independent of h. Further, |u|k={∫Ω(∑|α|=k(Dαu)2)dx}1/2, G=⋃N1N2i=1Fi(R), R={(±3√/3,±3√/3)} is a Gauss point set in the quadrant S={(ξ1,ξ2):|ξk|≤1,k=1,2}, and Fi(F(1)i,F(2)i):S→ei, ei an element; F(1)i(ξ1,ξ2)=x(i)0+h1ξ1/2, F(2)i(ξ1,ξ2)=y(i)0+h2ξ2/2, and (x(i)0,y(i)0) is the middle element.

This paper presents a finite element simulation of a human lower limb in a full extension after a knee joint arthroplasty. Aside a total knee endoprosthesis Medin Modulár (size 76, right knee) provided by Medin Orthopedics, a.s., Czech Republic, two long bones, femur and tibia were used. As for a load, more than 30 most important muscles of the lower limb and 8 knee ligaments were disigned. Compared with our former results, this model gives reduced stress and contact pressures values which were given by more realistic ankle and hip joint definition. Their distributions correspond our former findings.

This paper presents a finite element simulation of an oncology knee-joint endoprosthesis in a various degrees of flexion. The simulation has been made in accordance with an ISO 14243 [1-3]. A model of the knee implant (produces by ProSpon, s.r.o. [4]) consists of following parts: femoral stem, femoral replacement, femoral component, PE bushings, and tibial plateau. Results for four positions of flexion (1.53deg, 8.13deg, 15.31deg and 26.33deg) gave better understanding of strain and stress distribution along the endopros-thesis and pointed out also the most crucial areas requiring the attention. These foundlings are useful for individual design of the knee-joint prosthesis and for further development.

This paper presents a procedure of conducting Stochastic Finite Element Analysis using Polynomial Chaos. It eliminates the need for a large number of Monte Carlo simulations thus reducing computational time and making stochastic analysis of practical problems feasible. This is achieved by polynomial chaos expansion of the displacement field. An example of a plane-strain strip load on a semi-infinite elastic foundation is presented and results of settlement are compared to those obtained from Random Finite Element Analysis. A close matching of the two is observed.

The paper presents a numerical study of an aircraft wheel impacting on a flexible landing surface. The proposed 3D model simulates the behaviour of flexible runway pavement during the landing phase. This model was implemented in a finite element code in order to investigate the impact of repeated cycles of loads on pavement response. In the model, a multi-layer pavement structure was considered. In addition, the asphalt layer (HMA) was assumed to follow a viscoelastoplastic behaviour. The results demonstrate the capability of the model in predicting the permanent deformation distribution in the asphalt layer.

The main aim of the study is the side impact of the truck into the passenger car, which is one of the possible variants in compatibility case. The compatibility problem has direct influence at biomechanical injuries of the passengers travelling by the cars and also at deformation of the structure. This research should assign critical configurations of the truck and the car during side impact. Critical criteria of compatibility problem are biomechanical injuries structure deformation. The research was performed with Chrysler Neon mode, automotive seating (metal construction), Hybrid III dummy model and moving barrier with changed mass (equals to the mass of the heavy truck KAMAZ) and equipped with front underrun protection barrier (FUP - based on the geometry of the Mercedes ACTROS front structure). Interaction between car and heavy truck is at the driver side. During the research different location and angles of the barrier against the car has been taken into account. Two speeds were used to investigate the barrier influence to the car. The results of the simulation allow predicting the biomechanical coefficients such as: HIC, 3 ms, TTI, e.g., which give the overview of the passenger injuries. The other set of the data is plastic deformations which are visible at the Front Underrun Protection (FUP) barrier and also at the passenger car construction. The results of research allows to assign the direction ofthe changes which should be proposed to the truck manufactures in order to reduce passengers biomechanical injuries and intrusion into car during side impact.

Opis:
The paper presents the author’s non-linear FEM solution of an initially stressless deformed flat frame element, in which the nodes are situated along the axis of the bar initially straight. It has been assumed that each node may sustain arbitrary displacements and rotation. The solution takes into account the effect of shear, the geometrical non-linearity with large displacements (Green-Lagrange’s strain tensor) and moderate rotations (i.e. such ones which allow a linear-elastic behaviour of the material) and alternative small rotations when the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor is applied. This solution is based on [1], concerning beams without any initial bow imperfections. The convergence of the obtained results at different numbers of nodes and Gauss points in the element was tested basing on the example of circular arcs with a central angle of 120º-180º. The analysis concerned elements with two, three, five, seven, nine and eleven nodes, for the same number of points of numerical integration and also with one more or less. Moreover, the effect of distributing the load on the convergence of the results was analyzed.

Opis:
The presented strength and fatigue calculations refer to an unsupported deck crane and its three distinct parts: housing, jib and column. Static loads applied to the structure were due to the crane’s own weight and a maximum working load, corresponding to a maximum lifting capacity at a maximum outreach of the crane. The numerical analysis was aimed at determining the thickness of the skin plating of the column and the number, shape and distribution of stiffeners in the column, housing and jib, ensuring that the crane yields correct strength and fatigue parameters. During the process of designing marine structures, the standard numerical analysis is, in many cases, limited to calculations in the basic strength range. Even when using numerical methods of analysis, complex strength and fatigue calculations are often not performed. The modern numerical analysis chain for marine structures should concentrate not only on strength analysis, but should take a further step, which encompasses fatigue analysis. The article presents a new outlook on design methods, which should be the entry point to the design of marine structures. Based on the acquired number of cycles of fatigue life, it is possible to estimate, with a sufficient degree of accuracy, the practical service life of a structure. To solve the problem, the authors used the finite element analysis software ABAQUS supported by the fe-safe system.

Opis:
This paper presents a first attempt to model abrasive waterjet (AWJM) machining process using the powerful tool of the finite element method (FEM) in order to explain the abrasive particle-workpiece interaction. The new model takes into account precise representation of the constitutive behaviour of the workpiece material under AWJ dynamic loading conditions which was ignored in previous AWJM models. In the present model, forces acting on the abrasive particle need not be initially determined, as in previous AWJM studies, as they are automatically calculated at each time step. The results show that the finite element method is a useful tool in predicting abrasive-material interaction and AWJ depth of cut.
Modelowanie obróbki strumieniem wodnościernym metodą elementów skończonych. W artykule przedstawiono pierwsze podejście do modelowania obróbki strumieniem wodnościernym metodą elementów skończonych.

The finite element method (FEM) is applied to obtain numerical solutions to a recently derived nonlinear equation for the shallow water wave problem. A weak formulation and the Petrov–Galerkin method are used. It is shown that the FEM gives a reasonable description of the wave dynamics of soliton waves governed by extended KdV equations. Some new results for several cases of bottom shapes are presented. The numerical scheme presented here is suitable for taking into account stochastic effects, which will be discussed in a subsequent paper.
