Opis:
Gelatinous zooplankton is a group of organisms, which in recent decades has become one of the most important elements to shape the marine ecosystem. Their growing numbers and spreading to the new marine regions, in combination with the high feeding rate, causes significant changes in the flow of energy in the food webs. The only regularly-occurring gelatinous zooplankton species in the Puck Bay area is scyphozoan Aurelia aurita, most abundant in the summer and fall seasons. As shown in Barz and Hirche’s (2005), Möller’s (1980a), Schneider’s (1989), and Schneider and Behrends’ (1994) studies, the abundance of jellyfish in Bornholm Basin and Kiel Bight was several times lower than that in Puck Bay. Nevertheless, the authors of these studies concluded that the population of A. aurita can significantly reduce mesozooplankton and fish resources by preying on their larvae and eggs. Taking this into account, it is possible that the impact of A. aurita medusae on the Puck Bay ecosystem is even higher than in other parts of the Baltic Sea. Verification of this thesis requires detailed investigation; the scope of which should include investigation of: A. aurita food selectivity and long-term mesozooplankton, and A. aurita medusae abundance. The aim of this study, based on the few data in the literature, is to estimate if the gelatinous zooplankton is also an important element of the .
W przypadku Basenu Bornholmskiego i Zatoki Kilońskiej stwierdzono (Möller 1980a, Schneider 1989, Schneider and Behrends 1994, Barz and Hirche 2005), że liczebność meduz była około kilkukrotnie mniejsza niż w przypadku Zatoki Puckiej.

Opis:
Parasitism is an immensely successful mode of nutrition and parasitic organisms are abundant in most ecosystems. This is also the case for marine planktonic ecosystems in which a large variety of parasitic species are known. Most of these parasites are protists and they infect a wide range of hosts from the marine plankton, ranging from other protists to larger planktonic invertebrates. Parasites often have morphologies and life cycles that are highly specialized as compared to their free-living relatives. However, this does not mean that parasites are necessarily odd or rare phenomena; on the contrary parasites constitute numerically and ecologically important components of the ecosystem. This review gives an overview of the existing knowledge on the diversity and occurrence of parasitic protists in the marine plankton and examines the available information on the potential effects and role of parasitism in this ecosystem. Importance is given to the fact that prevalence and impact of parasitic organisms in marine planktonic systems appear to be overwhelmingly understudied.

Opis:
Midfield ponds are characterised by a rich biodiversity. A significant role in the function of these specific water ecosystems is played by resident zooplankton, which is a valuable component of numerous trophic networks. The aim of the present work was to study the taxonomic composition, concentration and biomass of zooplankton in two midfield ponds situated in the area of one commune, but geomorphologically different from each other. Experiments were conducted in the summer seasons (June-August) in the years 2011-2013 in two ponds. The presence of 55 zooplankton taxa, commonly present in such water reservoirs in Poland, was observed. Most species were determined. The largest group comprised rotifers (Rotifera) - 35 taxa. The crustacean zooplankton was less diverse: 11 taxa of copepods (Copepoda) and 9 taxa of water fleas (Cladocera) were found. The reservoir in Stare Czarnowo exhibited a greater number of taxa, where as many as 40 taxa were observed. However, 35 taxa belonging to various zooplankton groups were found in the pond in Żelisławiec. The relatively low Jaccard index confirmed small qualitative similarity between the studied ponds. Both reservoirs contained representatives of species defined as characteristic for oligosaprobic and mesosaprobic waters, which may indicate small contamination of the two ponds and the occurrence of a large amount of organic matter undergoing decomposition.

Opis:
Tintinnid ciliates, characterized by the possession of a lorica into which the ciliate cell can contract, are a common component of the marine microzooplankton. Lorica architecture and size range widely and classically distinguishes species. Here relationships between ecological parameters and lorica dimensions (lorica oral diameter (LOD), lorica length (LL) and lorica volume (LV) are examined using data from literature reports. The relationships between lorica dimensions and reproductive potential, using maximum reported growth rates of natural populations (n = 52 species) are assessed. Susceptibility to copepod predation and lorica dimensions are considered based on reports of clearance rates of Acartia species feeding on tintinnid ciliates (n = 7 species). Diet and lorica dimension is analyzed using data on mean maximum food size contained in field-caught cells (n = 20 species), and preferred food size based on prey size associated with maximal reported clearance rates (n = 15 species). Overall, LOD is closely related to most of the ecological parameters. Maximum growth rate is related to LOD with smaller LODs corresponding to higher growth rates, in contrast to LL and LV. Maximum prey size is positively related to both LOD and LL but more tightly with LOD. Preferred prey size is positively related to LOD and LV but more tightly related to LOD. Clearance rates of Acartia species feeding on tintinnids are significantly related only to LOD with small LODs corresponding to lower copepod feeding rates. Relationships excluding data on species of Tintinnopsis, the species-rich genus which generally dominates coastal communities, are also examined and show similar trends. In tintinnids, LOD, known to be a conservative and relatively reliable species characteristic, appears related to a wide range of ecological characteristics.

Reliable, rapid and non-invasive techniques are important for the monitoring of the ecosystem of the semi-enclosed Black Sea, especially sensitive to the human impact. Hydroacoustic techniques meet these requirements. In the study, the ADCP data (volume backscattering strength and water velocities), collected in the north-east part of the Black Sea in October 2014, were used to understand some biotic and abiotic processes in the environment. The study was motivated by the fact that the used ADCP mounted on the autonomous (moving vertically) platform provided measurements with significantly higher spatial resolution that it was in the previous hydroacoustical studies of Black Sea ecosystem. The main objective of the analysis was to determine the velocity of zooplankton diel vertical migration and understand the processes responsible for the variability of the volume backscattering strength.

Zarówno zagęszczenie (max. 2091,9 osob.·dm⁻³) i biomasa (max. 4,405 mg·dm⁻³) zooplanktonu estuarium rzeki Odry, były charakterystyczne dla dużych, średnio zuetrofizowanych rzek europejskich i zbliżone do wartości charakterystycznych dla słabo i średnio zuetrofizowanych, głównie przepływowych jezior. Wykazana różnorodność gatunkowa zooplanktonu badanego odcinka rzeki poddaje pod dyskusję często promowany pogląd o „katastrofalnym” stanie środowiska estuarium odrzańskiego. Wśród najliczniej stwierdzanych gatunków wrotków i skorupiaków, występowało wiele uważanych za wskaźniki wód eutroficznych: Keratella cochlearis, Anuraeiopsis fissa,, Brachionus angularis bidens, Trichocerca pusilla, Polyarthra dolichoptera, Pompholyx sulcata. Bosmina longirostris, Acanthocyclops robustus, Thermocyclops oithonoides, T. crassus, Mesocyclops leuckarti. Wyniki przeprowadzonych testów biologicznych (produkcja Daphnia), wskazywały na dość wysoką żyzność wód ujściowego odcinka Odry.
Both density (max. 2091.9 indiv.·dm⁻³) and biomass (max. 4.405 mg·dm⁻³) of zooplankton in the Odra estuary were characteristic for large, moderately eutrophicated European rivers and were close to the values typical for low- or middle eutrophicated lakes, mainly those flown through. The diversity of zooplankton species living in studied part of the river gives reason to question the often promoted opinion that the condition of the Odra estuary environment is „catastrophic”. Among the rotifers and crustaceans found, very abundant were those considered as bioindicators of eutrophic waters: Keratella cochlearis, Anuraeiopsis fissa, Brachionus angularis, Brachiomis angularis bidens, Trichocerca pusilla, Polyarthra dolichoptera, Pompholyx sulcata, Bosmina longirostris, Acanthocyclops robustus, Thermocyclops oithonoides, T. crassus, Mesocyclops leuckarti. The results of biological tests we have carried out (Daphnia productivity) demonstrate relatively high fertility of the waters in the Odra river mouth.

The investigation of sound extinction and echo interference is important as regards the accurate assessment of the abundance of densely aggregated zooplankton. To study these effects, the analytical model describing sound backscattering by an aggregation of isotropic scatterers (Rytov et al. 1978, Sun & Gimenez 1992) has been extended to the case of densely aggregated elongated zooplankton. The evaluation of the effects in the case of a dense krill aggregation demonstrates that they can be significant and should be taken into account.

Opis:
Coccolith debris in fossil zooplankton faecal pellets and the mode of its preservation are the unique source of data on the mode of feeding and digestion by ancient zooplankters. The animals are virtually absent in the fossil record in another form than their coprolites. However, minute structural details of coccospheres and their debris in the coccolith limestone are much less legible than in modern sediments. This paper presents how clear SEM images of details of coccolith plates in complete and dismembered coccospheres from fossil zooplankton faecal pellets can be obtained from thin sections of coccolith limestone. The images allow us to study the structural and compositional details of coccolith plates as well as their arrangements within the coccospheres and fossil faecal pellets.

Opis:
The role of Zooplankton in the aquatic food chain is very important as is it a member of trophic level two because it is secondary producer as well as primary consumer. The productivity of zooplankton will reflect the status of the aquatic ecosystem. Scanty reports are available on the secondary productivity of river Ganga. The present study was conducted in stretch of river Saryu and Ganga in Saran district, Bihar that was unexplored earlier. Secondary productivity of zooplankton was estimated following method suggested by Dalai & Parulekar (1986) based on displacement volume and Mangas and Garcia (1991). Zooplankton secondary productivity was in higher range 70.12-227.89 µg during winter followed by summer and monsoon in both the rivers. Zooplankton group wise individual biomass was as follows: (cladocerans > copepods > rotifers). However average biomass indicated that rotifers were dominating zoo plankton in the biomass contribution causing secondary production of zooplankton. The study identifies secondary productivity as a more integrative tool for the assessment of the ecosystem function.

Mesozooplankton communities were studied monthly at six sites in the Gulf of Finland during six ice-free seasons. The abundances of different zooplankton taxa were related to temperature, salinity, eutrophication level (total nitrogen and phosphorus), phytoplankton (Chl a) and density of predatory cladocerans, including the non-indigenous Cercopagis pengoi and the native Leptodora kindtii. T he results indicated that variability in the zooplankton communities was correlated not only with predation by mesozooplankton but also with bottom-up effects. Predation by the non-indigenous C. pengoi may significantly affect the dynamics of Cladocera and Rotatoria in the Gulf of Finland during the summer season.

Parasites of the genus Ellobiopsis and epibiontic ciliates of the genus Paracineta were found on the body surface of some copepod taxa collected in the Kongsfjorden area (west Spitsbergen, Svalbard) during summer 2002. Paracineta sp. individuals were noted in Metridia longa and Paraeuchaeta norvegica (0.5% of the population infected in each species). This study provides the first record of the presence of Paracineta sp. in the latter species. Remarkably, epibionts were attached exclusively to females. Calanus finmarchicus and C. glacialis were invaded by Ellobiopsis spp., but the level of infection was generally low (0.06% and 0.09% of the population infected, respectively). Parasite distribution within both host populations was similar – 80% of infected specimens were at copepodid stage V. This study also provides the first record of C. glacialis serving as a host to Ellobiopsis.

Environmental variables, food-web dynamics and energy pathways were investigated in ecosystems of six shallow lakes of the Crimea with salinity ranging from 24 to 340 ‰. There were considerable inter- and intra-annual fluctuations in the abiotic characteristics of the lakes. All the lakes had a very high concentration of total phosphorus in the water (up to 5.6 gP m-3) due to a great influence of the watershed on the lakes. A high level of primary production (up to 14.9 gC m-2 d-1) was found in the most of the lakes. The lowest primary production was found in the most saline lake with a dense population of the filtrator, Artemia urmiana. Grazing benthic energy pathways were dominant at salinities between 24 and 58 ‰. Greater levels of salinity led to a gradual reduction of benthic and increase of planktonic energy pathways. A fast shift from turbid to clear-water regime was observed in one of the lakes, caused by annual variations in weather conditions

This paper presents the numerical simulations of the influence of food ingestion by a herbivorous copepod on phytoplankton and zooplankton biomasses (PZB) in the sea. The numerical studies were carried out using the phytoplankton- -zooplankton-nutrient-detritus PhyZooNuDe biological upperla yer model. This takes account both of fully developed primary production and regeneration mechanisms and of daily migration of zooplankton. In this model the zooplankton is treated not as a ‘biomass’ but as organisms having definite patterns of growth, reproduction and mortality.

This study was carried-out to investigate the abundance and diversity of zooplankton in River Shasha, Southwest Nigeria. The zooplankton community constitutes an important component in the faunal composition of the water body. Samples were collected bi-monthly between February 2006 to February 2008, with a mind of capturing various seasons in the period of study, at two sampling stations (Ipetumodu and Edun-abon) established along River Shasha. A total number of 54 zooplankton species were identified, comprising of five classes, namely Rotifera (29 species), Ostracoda (8 species), Arthropoda (5 species), Copepoda (5 species), Protozoa (4 species) and Cladocera (3 species). The most abundant species were Brachionus, Lecane and Keratella recorded the highest distribution among the zooplankton observed during the sampling period. Among the Rotifers, Branchions patulus and Filina opoliensis were found abundant. Holopedium amazonicum and Scapholebris armata were predominant among the Cladoceras. Among the Copepods the dominant species was Ectocyclops phaleratus and Hemicypris ovate and Cypris subglobosa among Ostracoda. Among the Protozoa, Diffugia sp and Vorticella sp were observed. Ceratopogonid sp. was most dominant among Arthropoda. The density of zooplankton population was maximum during dry season (158702 Org/L) and minimum (12402 Org/L) during rainy season due to the different environmental conditions of the water bodies. The overall mean abundance of zooplankton population was in the following order: Rotifera > Protozoan > Arthropoda > Copepoda > Cladocera >Ostracoda. The few species of Zooplankton identified in River Shasha may reflect the moderate level of limit nutrient and there is need for regular monitoring of the waterbody to avoid the excess input of nutrients from domestic and agricultural waste that could lead to eutrophication.

Simultane- ously, crustacean zooplankton samples were collected to assess food abundance. The occurrence of Cladocera and Copepoda in zooplankton samples from the Maróz Lake. Food composition in the gut of vendace did not correspond with zooplankton abun- dance in the water. Due to considerable oxygen de fi ciency in the Maróz Lake (recorded in water layer 4 m below the surface), especially in June, it may be presumed that sublit- toral or even littoral was the bottom zone accessible for vendace, what, in turn, seems to be indicated by the presence of detritus, algae and macrophytes debris in food of the considered fish species.

The effect of moonlight on the vertical migration of zooplankton in reservoirs is widely known. Given the fact that phytoplankton provides food for zooplankton, we hypothesized about the possible correlation between the night sky brightness and the content of phytoplankton in the surface layers of reservoir. This hypothesis was tested for the Dobczyce Reservoir. We found the strict linear correlation between a level of chlorophyll a and brightness of the night sky, noticed in the surface layers of this reservoir. We have not noticed any other similar correlation between the level of chlorophyll a and other physical parameters of water such as temperature and oxygenation, as well as meteorological conditions such as air temperature or insolation during the daytime. We believe that brightness of the night sky, which consists of both natural factors (moonlight) as well as artificial ones (light pollution in a form of artificial airglow) is the main and crucial factor in the growth of algae in the surface layers of the Dobczyce Reservoir. We also believe that the correct lighting of the area of the water intake can significantly reduce eutrophication of such reservoirs.

Opis:
The thermal stratification of the upper water layers in the Baltic Sea varies seasonally in response to the annual cycle of solar heating and wind-induced mixing. In winter, the stratification down to the halocline is almost completely eroded by convection and strong wind mixing. Monthly averaged temperature profiles obtained from the ICES hydrographic database were used to study the long-term variability (1950 to 2005) of winter water mass formation in different deep basins of the Baltic Sea east of the island of Bornholm. Besides strong interannual variability of deep winter water temperatures, the last two decades show a positive trend (increase of 1–1.5◦C). Correlations of winter surface temperatures to temperatures of the winter water body located directly above or within the top of the halocline were strongly positive until the autumn months. Such a close coupling allows sea surface temperatures in winter to be used to forecast the seasonal development of the thermal signature in deeper layers with a high degree of confidence. The most significant impact of winter sea surface temperatures on the thermal signature in this depth range can be assigned to February/March. Stronger solar heating during spring and summer results in thermal stratification of the water column leading to a complete decoupling of surface and deep winter water temperatures. Based on laboratory experiments, temp erature-dependent relationships were utilised to analyse interannual variations of biological processes with special emphasis on the upper trophic levels (e.g.,stage-sp ecific developmental rates of zooplankton and survival rates of fish eggs).

The aim of the study was to assess the suitability of a plankton net (diameter of 60 cm, mesh size of 500 μm) and a column sampler (length of 200 cm, diameter of 5 cm) for estimating the density of zooplankton predatory species (Neomysis integer, Leptodora kindtii, Cercopagis pengoi). Nocturnal sampling was performed once a month (May—November 2018) in the Vistula Lagoon (southern Baltic) in the range depth of 1.3—3.6 m. Statistical analysis indicated no significant differences between the N. integer and C. pengoi density estimated by the two sampling gears. In the case of L. kindtii, the mean density obtained by the column sampler was higher when analyzing all samples together and/or deep-water samples only (p < 0.02). However, no such differences were found at shallow stations i.e. up to ca. 2 m in depth. It was assumed that the more suitable sampling equipment for estimating zooplankton abundance in a shallow, well-mixed transitional (brackish) basin is the column sampler. This type of gear, so far used mainly for sampling of micro and mesozooplankton, allows the simultaneous nocturnal collection of the entire zooplankton size spectrum, including representatives of large predatory species. The suitability of light traps for qualitative studies of zooplankton species responding positively to light under the high turbidity of the Vistula Lagoon was also investigated. The traps proved to be most useful for N. integer (100% frequency), and much less for L. kindtii (46.2%) and C. pengoi (27.3%).

This article is an overview which presents in brief some of the results of research done in the last 20 years on the structure and dynamics of intermittent fine structure in the euphotic zone of the sea and its effect on the behaviour of marine plankton. The introduction provides a general characterisation of this structure and its relations with the plankton concentration field. Chapter 2 covers turbulent mixing processes in layers of homogeneous fine structure, and discusses the dynamic interactions of these layers and how these affect the behaviour of marine phyto- and zooplankton. The principal conclusions,in brief, are that the current state of knowledge,no t only of intermittent fine structure itself and its dynamic transformations, but also of the influence of these processes on the behaviour of marine plankton,i s today still a long way from permitting an accurate description of reality. Moreover,b oth empirical investigations (in situ and in the laboratory) and mathematical modelling, despite the quite advanced stage that the latter has reached, need to be continued. For this reason the prime aim of this article is to show up the gaps in our knowledge which future research in this complex,in terdisciplinary area of oceanography should attempt to fill.

Relationships between the zooplankton community andv arious environmental factors (salinity, temperature, sampling depth and bottom depth) were established in the European Arctic Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) using multivariate statistics. Three main zooplankton communities were identified: an Atlantic Shallow Community (AtSC), an Arctic Shallow Community (ArSC) anda Deep Water Community (DWC). All species belonging to AtSC andArSC were pooledandtheir relative abundances in the total zooplankton calculated with respect to a particular layer (surface, midan dd eep strata), regions (the Barents Sea, Fram Strait andt he waters off northern Svalbard), years (1999 or 2003) and seasons (spring or autumn). Mapping of the proportions of Arctic andA tlantic species ledto the conclusion that zooplankton from the MIZs do not exactly follow complementary water masses, although the general pattern of AtSC and ArSC dominance accords with the physical oceanography of the study area (AtW and ArW respectively). The mid layer proved to be a better predictor of mesozooplankton distribution than the unstable conditions near the surface.

A description of the misalignment angle and the consequences if it occurs is given. It is shown that because of gyrocompass errors, the misalignment angle error α has to be computed for each cruise. A simple method of calibrating the acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) mounted on a vessel has been devised by fitting the cosinusoidal function. This is a post-processing method, suitable for calibrating previously collected data. Nevertheless, because of ADCP’s constructional peculiarities, the procedure must be repeated for each cruise.

Bangladesh, a country that lies on the north shores of the Bay of Bengal, has been blessed with a plethora of natural resources. St. Martin’s Island, the only coral-bearing island in Bangladesh, is undoubtedly regarded as one of the most prized possessions. It is rich in biodiversity, but truly scientific information on it is lacking. In the present investigation, 14 stations adjacent to St. Martin’s Island within the Bay of Bengal were sampled for determining the composition, spatial distribution, species richness, and diversity of pelagic zooplankton. Samples were collected in the pre-monsoon hot season. From the community of zooplankton, 34 species were reported. Most of the species belonged to copepods. Besides, Polychaeta and Cirripedia were also present in the community. The most significant species belonged to Oithona, Canthocalanus, Balanus, Euterpina, and Microsetella. Total zooplankton standing crop varied from 45,000–125,000 ind/m3 and the highest number of species (8) were observed at station 7. Strong variability in the distribution of species was observed in the studied stations. The number of genera collected at each station varied from 4–8. Data on species richness (Df) varied from 1.30–3.04 and that of the Shannon-Wiener Index (H) from 1.33–1.93. The species composition of zooplankton and the species richness and the diversity index of the population was comparable to the other studies carried out in the Central and Western Bay of Bengal.

Opis:
Phytoplankton community structure was studied from 2002 to 2016 in the Vistula Lagoon (southern Baltic Sea) in the context of the 2010 shift in its population, as well as the reason for this shift and its environmental impact. This evident shift was indicated by Multidimensional Scaling at the Bray Curtis similarity level of 31%. Before 2010, the primary components of phytoplankton were Cyanobacteria (up to 98% of the biomass, October 2007) and Chlorophyta (40%, July 2002). After 2010, the contribution of Cyanobacteria considerably decreased, and the proportions of other phyla increased. The total phytoplankton biomass positively correlated with phosphorus, and Cyanobacteria biomass with silica. Evident changes were also observed in the seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton. Before 2010, the highest values of biomass occurred in autumn, and were related to high biomass of Cyanobacteria. Higher biomass has been recently reached in spring, during the dominance of Ochrophyta associated with Chlorophyta, Charophyta, and Cryptophyta. Generalised additive models showed a significant decreasing trend of the total phytoplankton biomass, Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta, and flagellates, suggesting a decrease in eutrophication. This trend is concurrent with a considerable increase in the ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass since 2010. The increased ratio, however, did not result from elevated zooplankton biomass, but from the drop in phytoplankton biomass. Therefore, the most probable reason for the decrease in phytoplankton biomass was the simultaneous decrease in the concentration of all nutrients. The potential additional impact of filtration by a new alien bivalve Rangia cuneata G. B. Sowerby I, 1832 is also discussed.

Opis:
This paper analyzes whether physicochemical properties significantly influence the occurrence of zooplankton in a brackish reservoir. The studies were carried out on the Vistula Lagoon in August and September from 2006 to 2009 at 32 research sites. The environmental conditions in the Vistula Lagoon varied widely. At the time of the investigation, 17 species of rotifers, six species of Cladocera, and ten species of Copepoda were noted, and the total density of plankton fauna ranged from 145 to 765 ind. dm3. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between the occurrence of some zooplankton species and certain environmental parameters, whereas the sampling sites were grouped according to study years. The zooplankton systems recorded at the research sites in 2006 constitute the most disparate group. Thus, it can be concluded that physicochemical properties might significantly impact both individual species (depending on their environmental demands) and entire zooplankton clusters.

The outflow of freshwater from underwater channels in the Kongsbreen tidal glacier in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, 79◦ N, was measured as 138.8 m3 s−1 at the peak of the melting season. Experiments on local marine plankton mortality show that when exposed to salinities below 9 PSU, all copepods die within 15 minutes. We estimate that during 100 days of the melting season, as many as 85 tonnes wet weight (WW) of plankton is removed from the water column due to osmotic shock, which makes up 15% of the standing zooplankton biomass of the fjord. The dead zooplankton sinks after exposure to low salinities and is probably an important food source for scavenging benthic fauna in the fjord. This mechanism could be responsible for the high numbers of Onisimus caricus near the glacier front.

Opis:
During August 2000 and February 2001 two cruises were carried out along the Egyptian Mediterranean Coast on the Egyptian r/v ‘El-Yarmouk’. The samples collected were used to study the ecology and distribution of hydromedusae and siphonophores during summer and winter. The density of hydromedusae was high in the inshore waters during summer (av. 71 org × 100 m−3), decreasing to 28 organisms per 100 m3 in the oceanic waters; in winter they were more abundant in the middle and offshore zones. Ato tal of 9 hydromedusae species were recorded during the present study, 8 of them in summer. The most common of these were Aglaura hemistoma, Olindias singularis, Liriope tetraphylla and Geryonia proboscidalis. Only 4 species were recorded during winter, including Cunina octonaria, which was not recorded during the summer. The nine species recorded in the present study are circumtropical. The siphonophore density was high in summer. In winter, the average standing crop of siphonophores fell to about 30% of that recorded in summer. 11 siphonophore species were recorded, 10 of them in summer; Cucullus campanula and Eudoxoides spiralis were the most common. Only 6 species were recorded in winter. These 11 species are widely distributed – they have been recorded from the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Strong seasonality is thus a striking feature of Egyptian Mediterranean waters. Temperature is the most variable factor affecting the planktonic community, fluctuating between 26.5 and 27◦C in summer and between 16.3 and 17.5◦C in winter. The western part of the Egyptian coast, the area under study in this work, is poorly diversified in comparison with the eastern part.

Opis:
Zooplankton is an important bioindicator of ecosystem functioning. Knowledge of the seasonal fluctuation in the zooplankton population in estuarine waters of the Indian Sundarbans is rather limited. In the present study, we analysed the community structure of zooplankton assemblages and their spatio-temporal variations based on different multivariate statistics and indicator value analysis. A total of 56 taxa were identified and the density was primarily dominated by planktonic copepods and few meroplankton communities during four sampling seasons. The most abundant species were: Acartia spinicauda, Acartia sp., Bestiolina similis, Euterpina acutifrons, Labidocera acuta, Paracalanus aculeatus, Paracalanus parvus and Paracalanus indicus. Canonical Correspondence Analysis highlighted that temperature, pH, DO, salinity and nutrients were the prevailing environmental parameters associated with significant spatio-temporal changes of zooplankton distribution in this area. The highest abundance of zooplankton was recorded in winter, followed by monsoon, summer and spring. Throughout the study period, different zooplankton indices were observed in good condition. Seasonal occurrence of dominant zooplankton with high IndVal index was markedly observed and it might be used as a potential bioindicator for a particular season and environmental condition in this estuarine complex. The results of this study provide evidence for the presence of warm water species in the estuarine waters of the Indian Sundarbans and can be a clear indication of climate change-mediated elevated temperature in the estuarine system. Our results underscore the high diversity of zooplankton from mangrove dominated estuarine complex and emphasize the need for long-term monitoring in ecologically fragile ecosystems like the Sundarbans Estuarine System.

Opis:
The impact of transient wind events on an established zooplankton community was observed during a field survey in a coastal region off northern Norway in May 2002. A transient wind event induced a coastal jet/filament intrusion of warm, saline water into our survey area where a semi-permanent eddy was present. There was an abrupt change in zooplankton community structure within 4–7 days of the wind event, with a change in the size structure, an increase in lower size classes less than 1 mm in equivalent spherical diameter (ESD) and a decrease in larger size classes greater than 1.5 mm in ESD. The slope of zooplankton biovolume spectra changed from −0.6 to −0.8, consistent with the size shifting towards smaller size classes. This study shows that even well established zooplankton communities are susceptible to restructuring during transient wind events, and in particular when wind forcing induces horizontal currents or filaments.
