The article “Understand and Respect the Other: Autonomy and Autism in the Novel for Teenagers and Young Adults” is a comparative reflection of books that focus on the human relationships that are formed around young protagonists trying to find their own way and the true values of life. These are mostly realistic novels / mirror novels in which illness, disabilityor death represent a plot that puts the characters to the test. At crucial moments they are forced to deploy their energy and perseverance, and on that side, they learn to live and be independent. Novels about autism allow to consider new questions concerning identity and otherness, norm and outside the norm. The notion of freedom is viewed differently by the characters who are faced with the dilemma whether the need to care for the sick is a sacrifice or a duty.

The article focuses on determining the status of potential users (parents and guardians more often than the actual addressees of children’s literature), the circumstances of selecting tanatical literature, as well as the awareness of the circumstances of exposing children to tanatical literature. The author poses questions about whether the parents and guardians of the youngest readers are aware of the importance of these kinds of texts; when, how, and why they choose to use them; what obstacles they encounter and how they seek to overcome them. An important aspect of this research is the attempt to determine the thanatopedagogical competences based on the evaluations, opinions and reviews formulated by the readers and users of literature on dying and death which is primarily addressed to the youngest recipients.

The article initially discusses the potential reception of the cover of the first edition of the novel by Aleksander Minkowski entitled Valley of Light. Next, the article passes to the strategy contained in the novel’s exposure: focalization, narrative style and relations of the protagonist with other characters, as well as sources of potential conflict constructing the story, are analyzed. In these analyzes, the model reader of this youth novel is taken into account, as well as the emotions that individual stylistic holds and great narrative figures can evoke. In this perspective, the concepts of Gaston Bachelard, Roland Barthes and Rita Felski are used, among others.

Les animaux anthropomorphes peuplent la littérature de jeunesse. L’enjeu de ce travail est de mettre en évidence des apports et impacts de ces héros à poils, plumes et écailles auprès d’un jeune lectorat. Selon son âge, celui-ci sera plus ou moins attiré par un certain type d’animal : l’animal compagnon du héros humain, l’animal-héros identificatoire ou l’animal-guide et médiateur susceptible d’aider et d’accompagner l’enfant-lecteur dans sa découverte du monde.
Animals inhabit children’s literature. What is at stake is to explain the reasons for this study by emphasizing what contributions and impacts these furred, feathered or shelled heroes make to a young readership. According to their age, young readers will be more or less attracted by a specific type of animal, the human hero’s animal companion, the identifiable anthropomorphic animal hero or the leading and facilitating one likely to help and accompany them in their discovery of the world.

W artykule zaprezentowana została analiza tomiku poetyckiego Nika Grafenauera pt. Skrivnosti. Przywołane zostały ogólne koncepcje dotyczące narracji, które stanowią bazę dla interpretacji utworów ze zbiorku poety. Skrivnosti to zbiór tajemnic, które mogą być odkrywane samodzielnie przez czytelnika, ale też stanowić wsparcie dla wychowawcy pracującego z młodzieżą. Tekst ma na celu zapoznanie polskiego czytelnika z twórczością słoweńskiego poety, wykorzystanie aspektu narracyjnego do analizy utworu poetyckiego, a także pokazanie sposobu wykorzystania utworu poetyckiego w praktycznej pracy pedagogicznej.
The article presents an analysis of Skrivnosti (Secrets) – a collection of poems by Niko Grafenauer. References are made to general concepts regarding narration, constituting the basis for interpretation of the author’s poems. Skrivnosti are a collection of secrets which may be unveiled by readers themselves, but which also provide aid for tutors working with young people. The aim of the text is to familiarize Polish readers with the works of the Slovenian poet, use the narrative aspect to analyse a poetic work, and demonstrate how a poem may be used in pedagogical practice.

W artykule przeanalizowano adaptacje filmowe polskiej literatury młodzieżowej wydanej w XXI w. oraz wskazano kody kulturowe charakterystyczne dla współczesnych, polskich produkcji skierowanych do młodego odbiorcy. Interesujące wydały się cechy utworów najchętniej adaptowanych oraz tendencje widoczne w filmowych adaptacjach rozumianych jako reinterpretacje książkowych pre-tekstów. Zastosowano metodę analizy źródeł (materiału filmowego, serwisów streamingowych) oraz case study. Ponadto posłużono się elementami metody statystycznej w odniesieniu do dostępności adaptacji filmowych i ich popularności wśród młodych odbiorców. Badanie przeprowadzono techniką ankiety, narzędziem był elektroniczny kwestionariusz skierowany w pierwszym przypadku do grupy wiekowej 14–16 lat. Drugi kwestionariusz był adresowany do studentów i zawierał zestaw do zapisywania skojarzeń. Analiza materiału obaliła hipotezę badawczą, jakoby współcześnie w Polsce chętnie sięgano po utwory literackie dla młodzieży i adaptowano je na potrzeby filmów pełnometrażowych. Okazało się, że nieliczne wyjątki to przede wszystkim adaptacje gatunków fantasy i science fiction. Analiza kodów kulturowych pokazała, że tworzą one zestaw wzajemnie powiązanych znaczeń. Na gruncie polskich adaptacji w tym systemie dominują relacje rodzinne i przyjacielskie, dom rodzinny, podróże, zegary symbolizujące upływający czas.
The article analyzes film adaptations of Polish youth literature published in the 21st century and indicates contemporary Polish productions’ cultural codes aimed at young audiences. The following issues appeared attractive: features of works most readily adapted, trends visible in film adaptations understood as reinterpretations of book pre-texts. The researcher used source analysis (film material, streaming services) and a case study. The researcher also used the statistical method to film adaptations’ availability and popularity among young audiences. The study was conducted using the questionnaire technique, and the tool was an electronic questionnaire addressed in the first case to the 14–16 age group. The second questionnaire was addressed to undergraduate students and included a set for writing associations. The analysis of the material refuted the research hypothesis that in contemporary Poland, literary works for young people are eagerly used and adapted for full-length films’ needs. It turned out that the few exceptions were primarily adaptations of fantasy and science-fiction genres. The analysis of cultural codes showed that they form a set of interrelated meanings. This system is dominated by family and friendship relationships, family home, travels, and clock measuring.

The article The Sons of Staś. Colonial Masculinities in Ferdynand Antoni Ossendowski’s Youth Novels analyses the motif of male initiation in three narrative texts of the Polish popular writer from the interwar period: W poleskiej dżungli [In the Polesian Jungle], Mali zwycięzcy [Little Winners] and Skarb Wysp Andamańskich [The Treasure of the Andaman Islands]. Referring to postcolonial theory and the analysis of ideological discourses of the Second Polish Republic, the author examines novels with the aim to show representations of different cultures, masculinity models that existed in Poland and abroad in that period, and methods of their adaptation for the needs of children’s and youth literature.

Happy ending is known to every reader and viewer. Happy endings is present in the culture of antiquity. In the literature for children happy ending is often unhappy, goes only unhappy. Science of happiness (polish term: felicytologia) answer questions on happiness in the literature for children and young people. Doing an analysis of the novel in 1994 under the title "Miss Nobody", author: Tomek Tryzna. The novel is about an adolescent girl who is going through a lot of drama. It has various difficult problems, can not find happiness. Her happiness turns out to be really bad luck. The girl decides to commit suicide, because she is very lonely and does not under-stand her family and friends. She has the nickname 'nobody', invented his friends. Nick shows that Mary is insig-nificant person. Marysia falls with love twice in her friends – Kasia end Ewa. Friends do not love her. Happiness and sadness always come together in her life. Children's literature shows how happiness and unhappiness are together in life. The concept of (un)happiness is necessary to describe a novel for young readers, where happiness is often bittersweet.

Niniejszy tekst jest sprawozdaniem z konferencji Niekończący się Michael Ende – sylwetka, syg-natura, strategie fantastyczne, która odbyła się 8 listopada 2019 roku w Krakowie. Autorka przedstawia w nim wyznaczone przez organizatorów cele, z których najważniejszym wydaje się przypomnienie postaci oraz twórczości tego wybitnego, a jednocześnie nieco zapomnianego nad Wisłą klasyka literatury fantastycznej. Najwięcej uwagi poświęca przebiegowi konferencji, krótko omawiając wszystkie wygłoszone podczas sesji referaty. Zwraca uwagę na interdyscyplinarny charakter spotkania, wskazując ponadto możliwe kierunki poszerzenia refleksji dotyczącej twórczości niemieckiego pisarza wyznaczane przez przywoływaną literaturę przedmiotu.
The text summarizes the conference “The NeverEnding Michael Ende – profile, signature, fantasy strategies”, which took place on 8 November 2019 in Kraków. The author describes the organizers’ objectives, among which the main aim was to remind attendees of the profile and work of Michael Ende – a remarkable fantasy writer who is nowadays somewhat forgotten in Poland. The paper focuses in particular on the course of the conference, briefly summing up all the presentations and emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of the meeting. Based on the critical studies and further source literature, the author indicates some potential ways in which the reception of Ende’s work could develop.

The aim of the article is to present some aesthetic and ideological relationships between different cultural texts - the painting of Józef Chełmoński entitled Babie lato (Indian Summer, 1875) and its poetic ekphrasis with the same title written by Michalina Chełmońska-Szczepankowka (1937). The article describes cultural axiology and poetic sense of the perception of the painting which focuses on the visual theme of Indian summer. The presented interpretation demonstrates that the ideological message of the poem comprises the symbols of the Indian summer inspired by the poetics of the painting, namely praise of freedom, imagination and creative artistic thrust, which people derive directly from both the beauty of their native land and the truth about the order of life imposed by the natural law of the motherland, irrespective of its social and economic situation as well as its historical conditions.

The subject of the articleis the presence of a newtheme in Polish literature for young people related to the issue of the LGBT+ community. The main thread of the text concerns the work of Natalia Osińska, the precursor of introducing the issue of transgenderism in a novel addressed to a young audience. The article discussed the techniques and strategies used by the author to communicate complicated issues to teenagers in an accessible and non-invasive way. The characteristics of the novel as a channel for communication of controversial content are complemented by the discussion concerning the reception of Natalia Osińska’s works by young readers and literary critics

Równocześnie wskazuje na plurimedialność literatury dla dzieci i młodzieży jako medium pamięci, w którym przywołuje się Szoah zarówno na poziomie tekstu, jak i obrazu. W artykule w sposób szczególny podkreślony został transnarodowy charakter tej literatury, manifestujący się także w licznych tłumaczeniach opowieści o Januszu Korczaku. Poprzez tłumaczenia teksty te stają się częścią wielu literatur – można tu zastosować termin „literatury światowej” – wpisujących się nie tylko w narodową czy binarodową, ale także globalną pamięć kulturową. „Der Doktor bleibt!“: Janusz Korczak als literarische FigurDer Beitrag untersucht die literarische Repräsentation von Janusz Korczak in der europäischen Kinder- und Jugendliteratur der vergangenen vierzig Jahre. Dabei wird zugleich auf die Besonderheiten von Kinder- und Jugendliteratur als ein genuin plurimediales Erinnerungsmedium eingegangen, in dem sowohl auf Text- und auf Bildebene an die Shoah erinnert wird. In besonderer Weise perspektiviert wird außerdem der transnationale Charakter von Kinder- und Jugendliteratur, der sich auch in den zahlreichen Erzählungen über Janusz Korczak manifestiert. Durch den Akt von wechselseitigen Übersetzungen werden die Texte zu einem Bestandteil mehrerer Literaturen, so dass hier durchaus von Weltliteratur in dem Sinne gesprochen werden kann, dass sie sich nicht nur in ein nationales oder bi-nationales, sondern in ein globales kulturelles Gedächtnis einschreiben.
This paper analyses the literary representation of Janusz Korczak in children’s literature of the past 40 years. The characteristics of children’s literature as a truly multimedia means of remembrance play a role when both words and pictures commemorate the Shoah. The many stories about Janusz Korczak can also point us towards the transnational character of children’s literature. Through translation, these stories become part of multiple (national) literatures, so that we can actually speak of a world literature that is not only part of a national or bi-national memory, but of a global, cultural one.

The article aims at presenting children’s and youth books published in 2013, 2014 and 2015 by the publishing house called ‘Poławiacze Pereł’. The author analyses the content of three short stories: The Zebra by Ifi Ude, Bahar Means Spring by Agnieszka Aysen Kaim and Tales Under the Olive Tree by Aida Amer. The article author presents her considerations on multiculturalism as a subject of Polish education. The students’ comprehension of ‘otherness’ may enable them to respect and accept the differences in race, appearance, religion, behaviour, culture, clothing and preferences.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the topics of refugees and expulsion in conjunction with National Socialism and the Holocaust play an important role in contemporary children’s literature. Literary portrayals of Jewish childhood during the Second World War are mostly based on authentic experiences of eyewitnesses who are still alive. Against the setting of the approaching transition from the “communicative memory” to the “cultural memory” (Assmann 2008, Welzer 2008), literary texts are vitally important for social memorialization. However, so far there has been little empirical exploration into how these texts are read by adolescents and how they find their way into the cultural memory of literature classes. Furthermore, the didactic theory that children’s literature should contribute to intercultural understanding requires an empirical foundation. This was the basis for my study, Literarische Gesprache im interkulturellen Kontext - Discussions about Literature in an Intercultural Context – (Hoffmann 2011). In a qualitative-empirical study, I explored the reception of Mirjam Pressler’s novel Malka Mai – Malka (2002) – by secondary school students in German language classes in Germany and Poland. The aim of my research project was to reconstruct learning potentials in discussions about literature within an intercultural context. Given the novel’s potential meanings and the demands it places upon its readers, I would like to demonstrate in this article the different ways in which it is received, as well as to show which areas of tension lie behind the subjective receptions.

The main aim of the paper is to analyse the literary representations of meetings of children’s characters with Germans. The revision of the image of a German, who has been perceived as strange and dangerous for centuries, is carried out based on the example of selected contemporary books for young readers as well as literature for adults. There is a tendency to perpetuate a negative stereotype in contemporary Polish literature on the one hand and an attempt to overturn it on the other. The latter is achieved by presenting individual and often tragic German lives that so far have been marginalised in narratives about the past.

Literature for children and youth is reinterpreted under the influence of the new humanities. For example, prose from the 20th century is subjected to postcolonial read-outs (In Desert and Wilderness [W pustyni i w puszczy] by Henryk Sienkiewicz, the novel cycle by Alfred Szklarski), an eco-critical reading of the works of Tove Jansson, Hugh Lofting and the Polish writers Ludwik Jerzy Kern and Dorota Terakowska is proposed. On the other hand, works based on historical issues create a thematically focused series of publications, genealogical and geanological cycles, which are also fictionalized biographies, separate works referring to the lineage of the Polish state and dynastic linagees, post-memory narratives of a so-called “second generation” about the experience of the Second World War, and works on migration issues. The examples of literary historiography for adolescents mentioned and described in the article, captured in several areas of the formal issues, can be read through the prism of many analytical and interpretative practices, overlapping and incompletemethodologies. Retentional direction of reading, with the horizon of the past inscribed in it, does not exclude a protentional-oriented towards the future and environmental change, motivated by postcolonial revisions of old works, important issues of the 21st century (migration, post-memory), and a non-anthropocentric perception of reality. Their analysis should take into account the “poetics of history”, tropology of the narrative and narrative strategies (which Hayden White wrote about). Moreover, entangling the past with the present of the child-reader (and in fact with their future), seems to be a necessary condition for its interiorization, for recognizing it as one’s own, for admitting it. It always has a multitemporal, multigenerational and multicultural character.

After Ukraine’s independence in 1991 Ukrainian children got wider access to the translations of the works of prominent world writers for children. The classic literature of the world, aiming to mediate the children’s feelings for beauty and literary aesthetic, became an integral part of the Ukrainian educational system. Thanks to the increase of famous children’s books written in modern Ukraine, Ukraine is now experiencing the growth of a new generation of more intelligent and capable citizens free from communism ideology, able to integrate and positively contribute to the modern multicultural world. However “children and war” is now again among the painful topics in modern Ukrainian society but not new in history and literature. There are no wars, initiated by Ukrainians. The Famine of Ukrainians in the East of Ukraine by Russians, the Second World War, physical genocide of Ukrainian families and their children for the whole century even also just for the Ukrainian language saved Pain and Distrust in the generation memory of Ukrainians. But the aim of this survey of the Ukrainian literature for children and youth is to show the developing processes in the society on the basics of the main ideas, topics, directions and values during the XX-XXI centuries, beginning since the end of the XIX century by such prominent writer like Ivan Franko.

Artykuł wprowadzając w problematykę książki obrazkowej dla dzieci i młodzieży szczególną uwagę czytelnika skupia na zagadnieniu relacji pomiędzy obrazem a słowem. Ponadto podejmuje próbę uporządkowania pewnego chaosu terminologicznego wynikającego z niedostatecznego opracowania tego zjawiska na tle polskich realiów kulturowych. Tekst na przykładzie twórczości Iwony Chmielewskiej prezentuje zasadnicze cechy książki obrazkowej, zawartą w niej problematykę oraz jej znaczenie i niebagatelną rolę dla rozwoju młodego odbiorcy.
This paper, introducing the issue of the influence of picture books on infant and childhood development, focuses on the correlation between the illustration and the accompanying text. Furthermore we attempt to establish a standard nomenclature for this domain, hoping to do away with the verbal chaos that still prevails in the Polish specialist literature, due to the lack of relevant scientific investigation in this field on the backdrop of polish cultural realia. Taking as an example the works of Iwona Chmielewska the paper points out the main properties of picturebooks, presents the predominant topics and their significance and highlights their considerable potential on childhood development.

The following text asked for a possibility of the shaping of the national hate against the other nation into the literature for children, which is to observe in the books of Gustaw Morcinek. The second goal of this report is the exploration of the ontological constructs: communication in subcultures and spoken communication as social demarcation of the people. In that report, which presents the writers subjective outlook, the combination of the spoken and the written language creates the New Order of the Reality reflecting the observer’s opinions and ways of conceiving of the Old World, what performs a cognitive, constructive and persuasive function of the narration at the same time. The reader subconsciously starts to behave according to the mechanism of that theory of the shaping of the international hate.

The aim of the research was to try to answer the question about the literary picture of communication disorders in the school environment. The analysis shows that in contemporary novels for young people it is not difficult to find the examples of teachers violating the basic rules of conversation both in the process of education and in the communication with students that takes places after classes. In terms of pragmatics, it is: lack of professional skills and respect for work, especially lack of care concerning the quality of knowledge passed to students, schematic teaching, and within ethics – lack of moral standards, especially linguistic aggression of teachers towards the youth.

Celem artykułu jest analiza zestawionych dyskursów tradycji i konstrukcji nowoczesności w obszarze literatury dziecięcej i młodzieżowej oraz jej uwikłań politycznych w ustroju komunistycznym powojennej Polski (1945–1960). Analizę oparto na przeglądzie szeroko reprezentowanych badań opisanych w tekstach historycznych i krytyce literackiej, w szczególności przez badaczy zajmujących się socrealizmem – jednym z najbardziej bolesnych okresów dla polskiej literatury i edukacji dzieci. We wskazanym okresie rysują się wyraźnie trzy odrębne podokresy, które trafnie opisują polityczność aktualizującą się w tradycji i nowoczesności w książkach dla dzieci i młodzieży. Są to: „trudne początki” (1944–1949), „książka centralnie sterowana” (1950–1955) i „na fali odwilży” (1956–1960). Równolegle z omawianym zagadnieniem przedstawiono wymowny przykład zawiłego losu jednego z najbardziej znanych bohaterów klasycznej polskiej książki dla najmłodszych dzieci i zarazem ikony – Koziołka Matołka.
This article is aimed at an analysis of a review of discourses of tradition and modernity in literature for children and youth in the situation of political entanglement in the communist system in post-war Poland (1945–1960). The analysis is based on a review of widely represented research described in texts focusing on history and literary criticism, in particular by scholars, who are concentrated on socialist realism – the period that was most painful to the Polish children’s literature and education. Three unique and clearly distinct sub-periods identified during this time are used to describe the political tackling of tradition and modernity in books for children and youth in the period and sub-periods in question. These are: “hard beginnings” (1944–1949), “centrally-controlled books” (1950–1955), and “following the Thaw” (1956–1960). Simultaneously with this issue, a self-telling example of the convoluted fate of one of the best- known protagonists of Polish classical book for the youngest children, an icon – Matołek the Billy Goat – is depicted.

Various factors influence the contemporary reception of Polish literature in France. Economic criteria have succeeded ideological constraints, but new developments in the memory process in Poland and France also play a major role, all the more so as they are not synchronised, especially when it comes to the history of WW2 and Jewish -Polish relations. An analysis reveals the combination of at least four factors: the role of literary translations (re-editions and new translations), the results of his- toriographical research, the evolution of collective memory in both countries, as well as the interaction with foreign – mostly Anglo-Saxon – publications on the sub- ject. Through a cursory presentation of the reception of Polish literature for youth and adults in the early 2000s, we intend to show that WW2 and Jewish-Polish rela- tions, among other themes, occupy a central position. The two “re-enactments” of the figure of Jan Karski published in 2009 in French novels by Yannick Haenel and Bruno Tessarech and the ensuing polemic, as well as the re-edition of the testimony by the great Polish freedom fighter Jan Karski are a telling illustration of what is at stake in the contemporary reception of Polish literature in France and, more generally, of all the issues regarding that country.
