Opis:
Intensive care units and well-qualified medical staff are indispensable for the proper functioning of every hospital facility. Due to demographic changes and technological progress having extended the average life expectancy, the number of patients hospitalized in intensive care units increases every year. Global shortages of nursing staff (including changes in their age structure) have triggered a debate on the working environment and workload the nursing staff are exposed to while performing their duties. This paper provides a critical review of selected methods for the measurement of the workload of intensive care nurses and points out their practical uses. The paper reviews Polish and foreign literature on workload and the measurement tools used to evaluate workload indicators.

Introduction. The effects of the use of mobile henhouses and their equipment on the physical and mental stress of farmers in the organic egg production, and the reliability of the sensor-based detection of these in work processes are insufficiently known. There are neither measurement results nor key figures, according to operation and gender especially, available in the literature. Objective. The aim of this case study is to quantify the physical and mental stress of work processes on the basis of heart rate and the Baevsky Stress Index, as measured by the ECG- and activity sensor Movisens®, which is used mainly in the sports and rehabilitation sectors. To analyse the impact, daily routine work was divided into operations and the data collected for this purpose analysed descriptively and analytically. Conclusions. In summary, it can be concluded that measurement technology has the potential to capture the activityrelated exceedances of the endurance limit of the work severity by means of the heart rate reliably, to identify risk areas of employment and to quantify stress situations. The accuracy and reliability of data acquisition with Movisens® should be validated by a larger sample size and further measurements. In particular, the algorithm for calculating the data to quantify the mental and physical stress without movement needs to be improved significantly through further development.

On the example of a workload dispute (a version of a ‘border dispute’) I present the general problem of two persons – M and P – with equal entitlements to one commodity, which is equally desired by both of them. They are both moderately altruistic; they are not angels untempted by a selfish willingness to get their own way, nor are they devils, who want to destroy others even if it leads to self-destruction. As human beings operating in a world of limited goods, they are so physically and intellectually feeble that neither of them is able to permanently enslave the other and submit him to the second person’s will. Such being the case, each solution to the problem means that the profit of one person is the loss of the second. The question, whether justice is possible at all, suggests itself whether in a situation when people are more or less equal, or with limited altruism and/or selfishness and scarce resources.

Background. Suboptimal health status (SHS) is recognised as a subclinical, reversible stage of a chronic disease. Previous studies have proposed that SHS may be related to poor lifestyle factors, as well as work-related and study-related stress. Objectives. The present study was designed to assess the relationship between health status, general distress and job-related risk factors. Material and methods. A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 606 current workers in Klaipeda, Lithuania, who had no history of clinically diagnosed disease. The SHS score was derived from SHSQ-25; the General Symptom Distress Scale (GSDS ) was used for distress evaluation. Results. 90% (547) of respondents revealed an optimal health level. The main domains of SHS status were fatigue and mental status. SHS was related to cardiovascular, digestive and musculoskeletal symptoms, as well as to frequent infections and allergy. SHS was more prevalent in women. The overall health status depends on the following job-related risk factors: the professional potential to grow, rest, deadlines, competition, work experience, income, etc. Conclusions. Health status was related to distress and mainly manifested itself through fatigue, anxiety and sleep disturbances. Resting hours, professional potential to grow, risk in another person’s life and work in public have a significant influence on SHS

One of the elements of the logistics system is the subsystem of production, which is a combination of physical elements such as machinery and equipment, tools, and (most importantly) people. Furthermore, systems dependent on the human-operator are particularly susceptible to problems from discomfort, leading to reduced production quality and an increase in the cost of training and absence from work. The aim of this study was to assess the workload and risk of musculoskeletal discomfort (MSDs) in the position of a logistics-packer, through an analysis of risk factors. A computerized version of the OWAS (Ovako Working Posture Analysis System) method was used to conduct the evaluation, in which 10 steps of the product packaging process were assessed. As a result of the assessment for the category of action categories (AC), six steps qualified as AC 1, 2 steps as AC 2, and 2 steps as AC 3. The main factors affecting the risk of a negative assessment of posture were keeping the back bent and twisted and keeping the legs bent at the knees. Work on the assessed position for two activities is associated with a significant risk of MSDs, therefore corrective actions should be carried out as soon as possible. Ergonomic intervention should be linked to: revision of the position and methods of work. After making changes to the assessed position, re-evaluation with the OWAS method is recommended to verify the effectiveness of the changes.

Opis:
This article refers to the phenomenon of employee engagement as one of the key aspects of contemporary human resources management. The concept of professional engagement is a multi-dimensional approach relating to the positively understood effects of work, welfare of on employee, and optimization of the organization and its environment. Job engagement is believed to be strongly related to such processes as introduction of change in organizations, quality and performance issues, customer satisfaction or health, and effectiveness of people and organizations. Following the widely recognized in occupational health psychology model of Karasek (1979) and its further expansions, the authors of this article look upon work engagement as a subjective, psychological state of employees that emerges in certain circumstances, namely a “healthy” work environment. Following Kara-sek’s thinking it was hypothesised that perception of managable workload and sufficient autonomy will lead to the most required effects, such as higher levels of job engagement and its positive consequences. Thus, the specific purpose of this article is to investigate the way employees perceive their work environment in terms of workload and job autonomy in relation to job engagement. The empirical research was conducted from the perspective of the analysis of professional activity depending on the gender of respondents, limitations of social roles and the situation of women in Poland. The authors of the article conducted a questionnaire survey on a sample of 748 economically active persons, both women and men. The analyses showed statistically significantly higher levels of all three examined dimensions of job engagement (i.e. absorption, dedication, vigour) in women compared to men, together with a lower level of control (professional autonomy) declared by women. Control was a clear predictor of work engagement, to a similar extent in both men and women. In contrast, the relationship of workload with absorption, dedication and vigour proved to be variable and dependent on gender.

The aim of the study was to assess the exposure of upper limbs to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s) in the sequential packaging of a product, and the analysis of risk factors. Material and methods: To conduct the evaluation, the occupational repetitive action (OCRA) checklist method was applied. Rated activities related to the sequential packaging of furniture in positions located at the conveyor belt. Results and conclusion: High risk ratings occurred at two sites, whereas three were rated as medium. The main risk factors influencing the negative evaluations were: insufficient number of breaks, preventing the staff from getting sufficient rest and a short cycle - less than 15 seconds - due to the pace forced by the conveyor belt. Manufacturing engineers and specialists in the field of health and safety should pay particular attention to the organization of the packaging process, and should develop and implement a rotation system, taking into account the load of the upper limbs.

The aim of this study was to compare the workload between tasks undertaken manually and those with the assistance of mechanical devices. The results indicate that the workload during the tasks assisted by mechanisation was usually very low or relatively low. Statistical analysis showed the impact of the way of the work performance on the workload. However, the results also indicate that the workload is not evenly distributed: the effort relating to the working tasks is larger in relation to the work of women than men. The need for mechanisation of the tasks performed by women is higher than that for the mechanisation of tasks performed by men. The type of work performance (manual, or technically assisted) did not clearly show significant differences in the workload. This surprising result indicates that the technical devices used on many farms are still far from perfect. It is concluded that assisting work with mechanical devices reduces the workload of farmers, but the way of work performance (manual or mechanical) was not statistically significant.

Meeting the increasing demand for quality health care places pressure on health care facilities to have an adequate number of health care staff. The study is centred on nurse staffing as a key element in delivering high-quality care. Attention was paid to the ownership status of hospitals as it impacts the working conditions of nurses. An adequate number of nurses is vital to provide quality health care, but the growing demands in the industry have resulted in a shortage of nurses. The purpose of the study was to identify the level of satisfaction of nurses employed in hospitals in Slovakia based on their ownership status. The Methods section of the study emphasizes the importance of assessing satisfaction with nurse staffing as a crucial indicator of healthcare quality. The methodology aims to gather quantitative data from hospitals in Slovakia to assess the level of satisfaction with nurse staffing in various types of hospitals. The study was conducted in hospitals in Slovakia using the chi-square test on data obtained from a survey questionnaire among nurses. The questionnaire survey was conducted under the APVV and VEGA project. The research findings indicate that hospital ownership status and nurse shortages in hospitals are significantly correlated. Several job factors were compared to reveal that nurses were the least satisfied with the staffing in public hospitals.

The improvement of production processes is currently one of the key elements of the company's competitiveness. In the pursuit of profit, the rationality of streamlined processes is not always taken into account, i.e. that both process needs and these of employees should be considered. Caring of the comfort of work, of adjusting the workplace to the employee is the main goal of ergonomic activity. On the level of implementation of ergonomic demands depends not only the quality and modernity of the products, but also the ergonomics of the workstation and the production process, forming the basis for better quality and more efficient work. The Improvement of the quality of the ergonomic workplace is possible on the basis of a properly conducted assessment, using a variety of tools. This article presents the evaluation and ergonomic analysis of the work process at four production workplaces, and then indicates the directions of changes. The analysis included elements of physical effort: energy expenditure, static load and traffic monotype. Traditional tools were used, such as OWAS, REBA, and also the use of quality assessment tools (Ishikawa diagram, Pareto-Lorenzo diagram) was proposed in order to suggest solutions to improve the ergonomic quality of the workstations under analysis.

Production systems are a combination of physical elements such as machinery, equipment, tools and (most importantly) people. Furthermore, systems dependent on human’ operators are particularly vulnerable to problems associated with discomfort. This affects production quality and causes an increase in training costs and absenteeism. In addition, work performed by people is accompanied by physical effort, which can lead to the appearance of musculoskeletal discomfort (MSDs) among employees in the form of health problems. Factors influencing the risk of MSDs include employee posture at work, range of motion, strength, repetition and duration. The posture of a worker is affected by factors such as the job performed, workstation, work tools, their design and the anthropometric characteristics of employees. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the workload of employees and analyse risk factors using the OWAS method. Research sample: 122 postures of employees at work in manufacturing companies in selected workplaces were evaluated. Among the evaluated employees were machine operators (lathes, milling machines, bending machines) - which represented 48 postures (39% of all postures); packers - 30 postures (25%); fitters engaged in manual assembly - 27 postures (22%), and other workers who do manual work - postures 17 (14%). Method: The observation technique used was the OWAS method (Ovako Working Posture Analysis System) to allow assessment of the level of exposure to the risk of MSDs and the level of ergonomic interventions in the form of action categories (AC). Results: AC 1: 35% of all respondent postures, of which: 38% of the postures belonged to operators, 27% packers, 41% assemblers and 35% other employees. AC 2: 45% of all respondents postures (48%, 47%, 48%, 29%; of operators, packers, assemblers and other employees, respectively). AC 3: 12% of all respondents. postures, in which: 10% of the postures were of operators, 13% packers, 11% assemblers and 18% of the postures were of other employees. AC 4: 7% of all respondents. postures, of which: 13% were operators' postures, 0% packers' postures' 18% assemblers' postures and 7% of the postures were of other employees. Conclusions: 35% of the evaluated postures do not require ergonomic intervention. However, 19% of postures are associated with a significant risk of MSDs and need ergonomic attention soon/immediately. Improperly maintained back position (71% postures), shoulder (20% postures), legs (30% postures) and excessive external load (6% postures). Ergonomic intervention is necessary, related to the redesign of jobs, methods of work, workplace and the organizational positions.

The use of the eye-tracker on the navigation bridge makes it possible to objectively measure the ergonomics of the individual interfaces, as well as to evaluate the decision-making process itself, including the mental workload and stress. In the experiment, officers were faced with an unexpected and sudden situation leading to a collision. The simulated situation required the officer to act immediately and resolutely, taking into account all his/her knowledge about the ship, and interpreting the available data correctly. Outcome of this test was compared with gaze data and it was proved that experienced group with best results suffered lowest level of mental workload and was most efficient In decision making process. Based on those results a possibility of improving simulator training with the use of eye tracking data is discussed.

Academic ‘labour’ within the Higher Education landscape is changing as universities are increasingly managed as business organisations. In the contemporary neoliberal academic context, departments and individuals are required to develop forms of accountability based on quantitative metrics regarding performance, budgets, human resource management and income generation. Drawing from Foucauldian theories of power, this article explores the contentious implementation of workload allocation models in the UK Higher Education sector not only as an illustration of a superimposed managerial tool of control but also as an instrument of resistance. This article suggests that in order to counteract the systematic failure of neoliberal academia at the individual and collective level, these performance management tools can be used as forms of empowerment and resistance. Further, it is recommended that these instruments are designed in a collaborative way to ensure fair and transparent allocations of tasks and responsibilities, and to avoid unmanageable workloads.
