Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork on a wage subsidy project for NEETs in London, this article examines how talk and documents are used to make sense of caseloads and clients. The article draws attention to the way that staff account for clients through using “Intervention Tales.” The use of these tales provide insights into the routine implementation of labor market interventions. The article describes the work involved in documenting staff-client interactions and selecting which clients to put forward for “live vacancies.” The article shows how organizational documents, spreadsheets, and client registration forms are used as resources for assessing “hard to engage” clients during routine activities. In this sense, intervention tales, talk, and documents provide practical resources for organizing ordinary activities, such as segmenting client caseloads and characterizing individual clients.

So far unappreciated, even unnoticed by most work studies of work, natural environment is presently experiencing a renaissance, which is expressed in the search for more eco-friendly methods of work, the wider application of unconventional heating systems, not only in industrial activity, but also in households. Moreover, it is also experiencing a gradual departing from non-biodegradable packaging and products in favour of those biodegradable in a short period of time. These assumptions are relevant for work and the life of people and the need to make both more eco-friendly. This task applies to the activities of different scientific disciplines, including pedagogical and work studies, considering work in various aspects, on the basis of which they attempt to reveal expectations towards nature, the work itself and the people who are living and working in it.
Dotychczas mało doceniane, wręcz niedostrzegane przez większość nauk o pracy, w tym przez pedagogikę pracy, środowisko przyrodnicze obecnie przeżywa renesans. Poszukuje się przyjaźniejszych mu metod pracy, powszechniej stosuje niekonwencjonalne systemy grzewcze, nie tylko w działalności gospodarczej, ale i w gospodarstwach domowych. Wreszcie odchodzi się od opakowań i wytworów niebiodegradowalnych na rzecz ulegających biodegradacji w krótkim czasie. Owe założenia kierują się w stronę pracy i życia człowieka oraz wynikają z potrzeby uczynienia ich przyjaznymi środowisku przyrodniczemu. Zadania te wpisują się w działania kilku dyscyplin wiedzy, w tym pedagogicznych i nauk o pracy, rozpatrujących pracę z wielu punktów widzenia i starających się na tej podstawie ukazać oczekiwania wobec przyrody, w tym samej pracy oraz pracującego i żyjącego w środowisku przyrodniczym człowieka.

Objective. The study investigated the associations between diagnosed musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), work ability and demographics, work and lifestyle characteristics in a public health institution with a variety of occupations. Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out in a public health institution in Brazil. The subjects (n = 168) aged 20–69 answered a questionnaire on demographics, work, lifestyle characteristics and the work ability index. Results. A univariate regression analysis was carried out with the presence of MSD as a dependent variable. Association was found in relation to the age group, type of work demand, tenure at the institution, body mass index, work in the nutrition and laundry sectors, being a maid in the previous job, auxiliary service and auxiliary maintenance occupations, work ability in relation to physical and mental demands, estimated work impairment due to diseases, sick leave in the past year, own prognosis of work ability in 2 years’ time and mental resources: enjoying daily activities, being active and alert, being full of hope for the future. Conclusion. The presence of MSD affected several aspects of work ability.

The article presents the results of a research study on the situation of contemporary post-graduate students. Focus group interviews helped obtain post-graduate students’ opinions about the conditions of starting and continuing doctoral studies. The discussion focused on three main topics: motivation to start doctoral studies, the quality and conditions of doctoral studies evaluation, and the advantages and disadvantages of undertaking doctoral studies. Analysis of the respondents’ statements shows that the motivations for starting doctoral studies vary strongly. Common in the experience of the interlocutors is a lack of stability in life (including financialstability), insecurity of employment, overload, and stress. However, post-graduate students presented also positive aspects of doctoral studies, e.g.: social prestige or the possibility of development. The last part of the article describes issues related to problems and pathological phenomena (such as ‘punctasis’/‘points, credits collecting’), pointing to systemic and individual limitations affecting the situation of doctoral students in the Polish tertiary education system.

The widely accepted definition which relates a career to an individual’s experience acquired during work, places it in the social space and in a specific time. The contextual and individual perspective provides an insight into the interrelationships between individual agency and the limiting or stimulating aspects of the social context. In career studies, it is emphasized that the concept of a career should be related to the category of work, because career is one of the key concepts used in Western societies of the twentieth century to describe the history of work understood as employment, despite the fact that new career theories go beyond this area of reference. The article discusses the development of career studies that reflect the transformation of the work environment. Attention is paid to the dynamic transformations in this environment are a background to changing career patterns and the relevant studies. The genealogical roots of contemporary career theories are shown, with special emphasis ontheir transdisciplinary nature. The article moreover focuses on problem areas inspired by the 1970s, which proved catalytic for modern career studies. The article concludes with reflections on the extent to which changes occurring in the area of work, and in particular experiencing discontinuities, pose a challenge to the fundamental principles and standards on which the theories, research and practices in the field of careers are based.

Though much evidence indicates that work stress increases the risk of incident of coronary heart disease (CHD), little is known about the role of work stress in the development of recurrent CHD events. The objective of this study was to review and synthesize the existing epidemiological evidence on whether work stress increases the risk of recurrent CHD events in patients with the first CHD. A systematic literature search in the PubMed database (January 1990 – December 2013) for prospective studies was performed. Inclusion criteria included: peer-reviewed English papers with original data, studies with substantial follow-up (> 3 years), end points defined as cardiac death or nonfatal myocardial infarction, as well as work stress assessed with reliable and valid instruments. Meta-analysis using random-effects modeling was conducted in order to synthesize the observed effects across the studies. Five papers derived from 4 prospective studies conducted in Sweden and Canada were included in this systematic review. The measurement of work stress was based on the Demand- Control model (4 papers) or the Effort-Reward Imbalance model (1 paper). According to the estimation by meta-analysis based on 4 papers, a significant effect of work stress on the risk of recurrent CHD events (hazard ratio: 1.65, 95% confidence interval: 1.23–2.22) was observed. Our findings suggest that, in patients with the first CHD, work stress is associated with an increased relative risk of recurrent CHD events by 65%. Due to the limited literature, more well-designed prospective research is needed to examine this association, in particular, from other than western regions of the world.

The article focuses on the truth of a man attested and expressed by a work. It appeals to the theory which announces this objectivist reference of the work to human reality. At the same time, it makes reservations about these theories, which depend on the sense of the work solely on the intentions and interpretative perspective of the researcher. The truth of man in objective theories acquires the fullest interpretation in personalism of contemporary or classical provenance. The first of these – relational and liberalistic – brings the essence of a person to its communion with others, with „you” and with the community. The second – sees this essence in a permanent and irremovable substitutional foundation. It turns out that only the second personalism, based on the metaphysical truth, can stop today’s „inflation” of man. This inflation manifests itself in its supra-personal (in non-human) approach or in the sub-human (sub-human) approach. The first finds support in the negative (apophatic) and non-personal vision of God, which justifies the metaphysical indefiniteness of man. The second one brings the essence of man to his biological background in philosophy and performative theory, and thus questions his personal condition. The opposition between metaphysical personalism and postmodernism defined here confronts man’s truth and its adulteration. The dilemma of humanities depicted here is a manifestation of a wider and fundamental anthropological conflict that permeates contemporary thought and cultural practice. The stake of this conflict is the survival of man – the preservation of his spiritual status and personal dignity.

The aim of the article is to outline the specifics of places and spaces – refugee camps and centers, where children constitute the majority. Through reference to activities implemented there and oriented towards children, we discuss their problematic character connected with e.g. the absence of participatory, rights-based approach (art. 12 CRC) that serves children’s emancipation and equality. In the second part of the article, we propose the implementation of Janusz Korczak’s methods – solutions for participatory work with children (“underprivileged” groups), which seem both timeless and universal. An ethical and contextual adaptation or inspiration based on Korczak’s methods in work designed for backgrounds connected with children remaining in closed and semi-closed systems, provides a chance for children’s basic participation in decision-making in matters that concern their lives. At the same time, it is an opportunity to learn children’s opinions and an expression of respect for the child as a per-son who functions here and now, in the place and space of his or her temporary stay – a refugee camp, where an international protection system for children and adults is far from effective.

Traditionally, sociology has spent much more time exploring relationships between humans, than between humans and other animals. However, this relative neglect is starting to be addressed. For sociologists interested in human identity construction, animals are symbolically important in functioning as a highly complex and ambiguous “other”. Theoretical work analyses the blurring of the human-animal boundary as part of wider social shifts to postmodernity, whilst ethnographic research suggests that human and animal identities are not fixed but are constructed through interaction. After reviewing this literature, the second half of the paper concentrates on animals in science and shows how here too, animals (rodents and primates in particular) are symbolically ambiguous. In the laboratory, as in society, humans and animals have unstable identities. New genetic and computer technologies have attracted much sociological attention, and disagreements remain about the extent to which humananimal boundaries are fundamentally challenged. The value of sociologists’ own categories has also been challenged, by those who argue that social scientists still persist in ignoring the experiences of animals themselves. This opens up notoriously difficult questions about animal agency. The paper has two main aims: First, to draw links between debates about animals in society and animals in science; and second, to highlight the ways in which sociologists interested in animals may benefit from approaches in Science and Technology Studies (STS).

W obecnym świecie dobra organizacja czasu to podstawa. Ludzie mają coraz więcej obowiązków, a doba wciąż trwa jedynie dwadzieścia cztery godziny. Aby wypełnić wszystkie cele na daną jednostkę czasu, należy odpowiednio zarządzać swoim czasem, co nie jest łatwe. W części teoretycznej opracowania omówione zostało pojęcie zarządzania czasem. Przedstawiono najprostszą definicję zarządzania czasem oraz jedną z głównych metod zarządzania czasem. Dodatkowo przybliżono zasadę Pareto oraz prawo Parkinsona. W części empirycznej zostały opracowane wyniki badania przeprowadzonego za pomocą autorskiego kwestionariusza ankietowego. Badanie skierowane było do studentów aktywnych zawodowo. Po przeanalizowaniu struktury odpowiedzi na wybrane pytania sformułowane zostały wnioski. Większość studentów ocenia swoją umiejętność zarządzania czasem jako dobrą oraz widzi jej poprawę, od kiedy połączyli studia i pracę. Studenci uważają również, że łączenie studiów i pracy zawodowej jest trudne i wymaga dobrej organizacji. Dodatkowo jako metodę badawczą wykorzystano doświadczenie autora, aktywnego zawodowo studenta trzeciego roku studiów pierwszego stopnia na Uniwersytecie Przyrodniczym w Lublinie.
In today’s world, good time management is essential. People have more and more responsibilities and the day is still only twenty-four hours long. In order to fulfill all the goals for a given time unit, one need’s to properly manage one’s time, which is not easy. The theoretical part of the article discusses the concept of time management. The simplest definition of time management and one of the main methods of time management are discussed. Additionally, the Pareto principle and Parkinson’s law are introduced. In the empirical part of the article, the results of a study conducted with the use of a proprietary questionnaire are analysed. The questionnaire was aimed at economically active students. Most students rate their time management skills as good and see it improving since they combined studies and work. Students also find combining studies and work difficult, requiring good organization. Additionally, the experience of the author, a professionally active third-year undergraduate student at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, informed the research.

W Polsce, podobnie jak w wielu innych krajach europejskich, mamy do czynienia z postępującym procesem starzenia się społeczeństwa. Problem nie omija również województwa świętokrzyskiego, w tym miasta Kielce. Obecnie 19,6% ludności Kielc, a więc niemal co piąty mieszkaniec miasta, ma więcej niż 65 lat. W związku z dużą skalą tego zjawiska oraz poważnymi konsekwencjami, jakie za sobą niesie, pomoc ludziom starszym stanowi znaczący obszar działania instytucji pomocy społecznej - Miejskiego Ośrodka Pomocy Rodzinie w Kielcach. W Rejonie Opiekuńczym „Barwinek–Baranówek” do najczęściej udzielanych form pomocy osobom starszym należą: usługi opiekuńcze bądź specjalistyczne usługi opiekuńcze, obiady barowe, opał z dowozem, przyznanie miejsca pobytu w placówkach wsparcia dziennego, a także zasiłki finansowe. Dużą rolę odgrywa także praca socjalna na rzecz osób starszych, w zakres której wchodzą: przekazywanie informacji, udzielanie porad, aktywizacja, interwencja kryzysowa, terapia, rozwiązywanie konfliktów, mediacje, wsparcie psychologiczne, pomoc w załatwianiu spraw urzędowych, udzielanie wsparcia dla członków rodziny i opiekunów i wiele innych działań. Praca socjalna na rzecz seniorów polega także na podejmowaniu działań zmierzających do uruchomienia możliwości tkwiących w seniorach celu poprawy ich sytuacji.
In Poland, as in many other European countries, the progressing aging of the society can be observed. This issue gains prominence also in the Świętokrzyskie region, particularly in the city of Kielce. Currently 19.6 percent of the population of Kielce, or every fifth person in the city, is over sixty five years old. Due to the large scale of this phenomenon and its far-reaching consequences, helping the elderly is the fundamental idea of the state aid institution MOPR in Kielce. In the Barwinek-Baranówek district the most common forms of help for the elderly are: general care or specialist care, dinners, providing winter fuel, providing a place in daytime care facilities and also financial aid. A large role is played by informing and advising, intervention, therapy, helping to deal with conflict, mediation, psychological support, help with paper work, giving aid to families and guardians and many other actions. Social work for the elderly is also based upon taking action to activate seniors to improve their situation.
