In this paper, we present a macroergonomic model of work design that is applied and tested to examine Total Quality Management (TQM) in the public sector. According to the model, TQM can influence different aspects of work design and quality of working life (QWL). Questionnaire data collected in 2 public sector organizations in the USA show that TQM can have both positive and negative impact on work design and QWL. The main positive impact of TQM was found on job content, job control and participation, and social relationships. The main negative impact of TQM was on workload, uncertainty, and clarity of job duties. The impact of TQM on QWL was mixed. Our results show that the impact of TQM on work design and QWL varied very much across the 6 participating departments, as well as within the departments. Further research is warranted to assess the human impact of TQM, in particular research on the linkage between various aspects of TQM, on one hand, and work design and QWL, on the other hand.

The adult under the pressure of demands to function in two life domains: work and family There is a growing number of men and women engaged in work and family roles. This article describes linkages between the work-family interface and individual, family and work outcomes: life satisfaction, marital satisfaction, individual psychologicall well-being, job stress. Recent studies on the work-family interface have focused on the scarcity perspective, which posits that engaging in multiple roles results in interrole conflict when participation in one role is made more difficult by virtue of participation in the other role. Other studies support the facilitation or enhancement hypothesis which suggests, that participation in one role is made better or easier by virtue of participation in the other role. The aim of this research is to present a research project studying the work-family questionnaire (Grzywacz, Bass, 2003) assessing work-family conflict, work-family facilitation, family-work conflict, family-work facilitation:to analyze both the conflict and facilitation dimensions and both directions of influence: work to family and family to work in dual-earner couples,to examine the relation of conflict and facilitation to life satisfaction, marital satisfaction and other indicators of mental health.The subjects in this research are 80 married couples living in dual-earner families in Poland, who have at least one child under 12.Measures used in this study:Work-Family Fit Questionnaire (Grzywacz, Bass, 2003) in Polish version adopted by Lachowska (2005),Job characteristics assessed through a questionnaire developed by Dudek at al. (1999),General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg, 1978),Marital Satisfaction Scale (Olson, Fowers, 1993),Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener at al., 1993).

The aim of this article is to describe the notion of telework and show the most popular aspects of telecommuting. Detailed review of the literature points out that there is no one, widely accepted definition of telework. Thus, for the purpose of this article, telecommuting is defined as “Every sort of money-gained activity, caused by external motivation of the individual and/or induced by the organization, no matter what is the extent of time spent on teleworking. What is very important is the fact that teleworking is connected with fulfilling the obligations in a flexible way, outside the conventional workplace, with the use of available telecommunications or computer-based technology to transport it’s effects”. Further investigation of the literature shows that 3 aspects are being the most popular among telework researchers: 1) demographic and psychological characteristic of telecommuting individuals, 2) causes of teleworking, 3) outcomes of teleworking, such as: increased productivity, organizational loyalty, satisfaction and high morale, decreased level of stress and positive work-life balance. Majority of the surveys have got plenty of methodological limitations, thus the results are not to be generalized on wider population. Moreover, obtained data varies in different studies, so that telework with all it’s aspects needs further investigation. At the end of the article there are proposed new directions for the future research.

Social comparisons, seeing oneself in relation to others, are universal, common, and perhaps even necessary. In a study of parents of deaf children, intense, open, and mutual examinations were voiced in parental groups, meetings between parents and professionals, and interviews. These comparisons were generated in a specific situation created by successful claims for separate milieus advocated by the Deaf movement. The local culture, “the deaf world,” was characterized by close proximity and a highly charged ideological moral climate. With the central argument that strong integration breeds comparisons and examinations, we conclude that the integration of parents creates a situation perfect for drawing comparisons, creating not only cohesion, but also renewed separatist distinctions, expressed in terms of moral examinations, competition and envy. Studying the content and details of comparisons in any given field makes the particular morality that is bred, fed, and elaborated obvious.

W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań przeprowadzonych pomiędzy grudniem 2008 r. a marcem 2009 r. przez Instytut Pracy i Spraw Socjalnych. Objęto nimi 50 szefów działów ZZL (wywiady) oraz 1204 pracowników (ankietyzacja) zatrudnionych na stanowiskach pracownika wykonawczego, specjalisty i menedżera. Do udziału w badaniach zaproszono przedsiębiorstwa o potwierdzonym wysokim poziomie ZZL: laureatów konkursów „Lider Zarządzania Zasobami Ludzkimi” i „Inwestor w Kapitał Ludzki”.
This article presents the results of research conducted between December 2008 and March 2009 by the Institute of Labor and Social Studies in Warsaw. The study encompassed fifty human resource management departments (interviews) and 1,204 employees (questionnaires) filling positions of operative workers, specialists, and managers. Companies with a confirmed high level of HRM -winners of the 'Human Resource Management Leader' and 'Investor in Human Capital' competitions - were invited to participate in the study.

The purpose of the study was to determine the relation between overtime, job strain and life style, and cardiovascular risk (CVR) in 97 managers and 98 physical workers. CVR was measured with the Framingham method. Information about job strain, overtime, life style and extra-occupational activities was obtained with a self-administered questionnaire. The results showed that both groups had a similar, medium-level job stress. Being a manager and having extra-occupational activities (self-education) were significantly related with CVR (p = .000, p = .035, respectively), whereas other factors that were analysed (i.e., physical work and overtime) were not. The managers were older than the physical workers; that may be why the factor of being a manager was significantly related to CVR. The extra-occupational activities connected with improving workersʼ skills may play an important role in the development of workersʼ overload and an increase in CVR.

Chronicles of the life and work of Tadeusz Kantor. An attempt to characterize the specific form of publications and their importance in the context of the new program for the museum of Tadeusz KantorThe article is a reflection on the publishing activities of the Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor Cricoteka in Krakow. Since 2000 there consistently appear extensive and very detailed chronicles describing the life and work of the artist. These chronicles, which include among others, fragments of old newspaper articles, notes, letters and memoirs, depict Kantor in a variety of situations and in a broad context of political events, cultural events, etc. These types of publications, which are rather rare among the publications of other cultural institutions, are the result of research carried out by Cricoteka (as a facility dedicated to a single artist, also created by himself). The author attempts to describe the work of Cricoteka and show the specificity of its publications. She also draws attention to the potential and opportunities that lie in this kind of research and publications, especially in the context of the new program for the Museum of Tadeusz Kantor.

The author reveals previously unknown details of the Nałkowskis’ family life which affected the development of Wacław’s character and his interests. These details were also decisive as factors which influenced his scientific and social commitment. Social relationships of his parents and their affinities were also analyzed in order to explain the origins of his worldview. Wacław’s combative nature was already developed in the Russian school, where every symptom of Polish patriotism as well as all forms of free thought were punished. Many questions concerning Nałkowski’s activities can be explained by his experiences from his student days and by the atmosphere at home, where most of his works were written, and where numerous debates and meetings with the representatives of the Polish scientific and patriotic circles were held. The article was composed with the use of the unique source materials collected in the Nałkowskis’ Family Museum in Wołomin, and the memoires of Zofia Nałkowska, the well-known writer and scientist’s daughter.

W artykule omówiono zagadnienie satysfakcji zawodowej, jako jednej ze sfer jakości życia. Problem badawczy obejmował związek pomiędzy wartościami ostatecznymi, instrumentalnymi oraz związanymi ze spełnieniem naukowym a satysfakcją z pracy pracowników naukowych. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynikło, że zadowolenie zawodowe nie jest niezależne od wartości realizowanych w pracy. Im więcej realizowanych wartości ostatecznych i im silniej realizowane, tym wyższa satysfakcja zawodowa i na odwrót. Dla satysfakcji zawodowej pracowników naukowych wartości ostateczne miały większe znaczenie niż wartości instrumentalne oraz wartości związane ze spełnieniem naukowym. Analiza wyników pozwoliła nakreślić płaszczyzny dalszych badań, wskazując potrzebę lepszego poznania uwarunkowań satysfakcji z pracy, uwzględniając specyfikę danej grupy zawodowej.
In the paper the issues of work satisfaction as part of life satisfaction are discussed. The research problem included the link between terminal values, instrumental values or values connected with scientific fulfilment and work satisfaction of academics. The results of the conducted research show that work satisfaction is dependent on observing terminal values at work. The more values a person feels observed, the more satisfied with work he or she is and vice versa. Terminal values have more influence on work satisfaction than instrumental ones or values connected with scientific fulfilment. The analysis of the results helped to define plans for future research, showing the need to find the causes of work satisfaction, including unique conditions of the examined profession.

This paper, based on interviews with trade-union spokespersons, aims to explore the attitudes of Poland’s organised labour towards flexibility in the context of work–life balance (WLB) and low employment rates of women and seniors. It transpires, among other things, that they are cautiously in favour of flexible working practices and recognise the significance of WLB policies. Still, they come out against any major labour-code changes facilitating the propagation of far-reaching flexibility-underpinned WLB measures. While declaring their commitment to fighting age/gender discrimination and improving the position of women/seniors in the labour market, they opt for anti-discriminatory regulation and employability enhancement through training rather than such supply-side measures as employment protection legislation (EPL) and payroll taxes reduction.

Postęp techniczny sprawił, że praca stała się lżejsza, wykonywana jest szybciej, popra-wił się poziom bezpieczeństwa i stan zdrowia pracowników. Z drugiej strony kurczy się rynek pracy (bezrobocie), rośnie monotonia pracy, słabną więzi społeczne. Przeciwdziałać tym zjawiskom ma humanizacja pracy. Jej metody to m.in.: rotacja, rozszerzanie i wzbogacanie pracy, metoda zadań dodatkowych, metoda grup autonomicznych oraz model Lothara Schneidera wahadłowego czterodniowego tygodnia pracy będący propozycją ograniczania bezrobocia poprzez dzielenie się pracą.
Technical progress caused that job is easier and faster, the level of job security increased and the health condition of employees improved. On the other hand the job market is shrinking and the unemployment increases, the level of work monotony grows and the social ties weaken. Those phenomena can be co-unteracted by the humanization of work. Its methods, among others, are: job rotation, job enlargement, job enrichment, secondary tasks, autonomous work group and Lothar Schneder's model of shuttle four-day-working week as being the proposal of the unemployment reduction through sharing the work.

The aim of this paper was to create a psychometric instrument for the measurement of socially oriented preferences in economic decisions made in professional and private life as well as at scrutinizing the effects of various environmental variables on these preferences. For this purpose, two surveys were carried out on a group of adult working Poles (N=348+487=835). The idea of the new questionnaire and the results of factor analysis are described herein, along with the other examinations confirming the accuracy of the new instrument. A significant correspondence between eight situational factors: five in professional life (goal setting strategy, work style, role and responsibility, position, nonfinancial rewards) and three in private life (frequency of family meeting, marital status, parenthood), and the intensity of socially oriented preferences in economic decisions was confirmed. Both surveys showed that these preferences undergo significant alterations along with each slightest change in situational factors, even ones not directly connected with the decision at hand. Moreover, the studies indicate that the intensity of socially oriented preferences vary with respect to gender and age. Practitioner Points: (1) Team goal setting strategy, work style, responsibility and non-financial rewards intense socially oriented preferences. (2) Financial rewards are irrelevant for socially oriented preferences.

Psalm 90 stands at a critical juncture in the overall scheme of the Psalter. It is the first psalm in the small collection of Ps 90–106 which constitutes Book IV of the Psalter. This song, which begins as a mourning cry, then rises to an angry complaint, and seems to conclude in a desperate resignation, at  the end arrives at a breadth and depth of meditation on the coherence of divine actions and the corresponding human reaction. The Hebrew verb turn/return occurs three times in Psalm 90. It is the verb used in the prophetic literature to call on the people to return to their God. In Ps 90:3 God is pictured as (re)turning humans to the dust whence they came by ordering, “Return, children of mankind!”. Surprisingly, however, in the v.13, which constitutes the turning-point of the entire psalm, the psalmist calls on YHWH to “repent” and to show a change of heart. God is asked to be mindful of the fact that humans flourish for but a morning and they fade by evening (vv. 5-6). The author beseeches that the covenant loyalty (Hesed ) of YHWH might satisfy his servants in the morning, so that rejoicing and gladness may follow for a new lifetime. In this context, the references to God’s “work” and to his “glorious power” (v. 16) seem to take on a double meaning. The appeal is not only for a restoration of the nation of Israel by powerful acts of divine intervention. The appeal is, perhaps even more, for YHWH to show his work, the work of compassion (v. 13), and to make his power known by his covenant loyalty (v. 14) and favor (v. 17).
