The paper tackles the archetypes of the wise old man and the wise old woman in classical tragedies and contemporary plays. The following modifications of the archetype are detected in the dramas by Naomi Wallace: the elderly characters are either protagonists (One Flea Spare) or catalysts (Slaughter-City) of the action; the ageist stereotypes are subverted; the “life-review” concept is productively implemented in both plays. The author of the paper analyzes gerontological portrayals of the dramatis persona and their choice of the strategies of aging.

This paper departs from the assumption that no other drama disposes of such a broad, international, and symbolically charged interpretation history as Nathan the Wise (1779). While the play was censored in Nazi Germany, European (and often Jewish) authors, who had sought refuge in the United States, brought Nathan along to perpetuate Lessing’s plea for religious tolerance. In this transatlantic adaptation process, however, the authors chose to adjust the original text to the cultural as well as societal and political conditions both in their old and new homeland(s). Could Nathan stand up to these new challenges?

There is a strong need to improve the productivity of single slope solar still. PV generator powered electrical heater and chamber step-wise design were introduced to the conventional solar still. An experimental study was performed to investigate the effect of adding the above mentioned modifications on the output parameters of the modified solar still. The inclusion of PV-powered heating coil and chamber step-wise design enhanced the productivity of distiller by up to 1098%.

The paper analyzes one of the funeral works by Wacław Potocki, that is Period XV, belonging to the cycle which was written after Stefan's death, the son of the poet. The author unveils the Stoic inspirations present in the text, revealed in the questions about the Cause of the world, in the reflection on such concepts as nature, Fortune, virtue, vice, but also stresses the apparent intention to revise the neo-Stoic stereotypes; this intention results from a belief that man, irrespective of his virtue and wisdom, is a twist of fate. The poet, broken down by his personal suffering, notices superficiality and conventionality of „comforts given by philosophy”.

Testing is an indispensable part of the software development life cycle. It is performed to improve the performance, quality and reliability of the software. Various types of testing such as functional testing and structural testing are performed on software to uncover the faults caused by an incorrect code, interaction of input parameters, etc. One of the major factors in deciding the quality of testing is the design of relevant test cases which is crucial for the success of testing. In this paper we concentrate on generating test cases to uncover faults caused by the interaction of input parameters. It is advisable to perform thorough testing but the number of test cases grows exponentially with the increase in the number of input parameters, which makes exhaustive testing of interaction of input parameters imprudent. An alternative to exhaustive testing is combinatorial interaction testing (CIT) which requires that every t-way interaction of input parameters be covered by at least one test case. Here, we present a novel strategy ABC-CAG (Artificial Bee Colony-Covering Array Generator) based on the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm to generate covering an array and a mixed covering array for pair-wise testing. The proposed ABC-CAG strategy is implemented in a tool and experiments are conducted on various benchmark problems to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed approach. Experimental results show that ABC-CAG generates better/comparable results as compared to the existing state-of-the-art algorithms.

The paper is devoted to the analysis of a graph transformation, pertinent for the transport and logistic systems and their planning and management. Namely, we consider, for a given graph, representing some existing transport or logistic system, its transformation to a (non-equivalent) so-called ”hub-and-spoke” structure, known from both literature and practice of transportation and logistics. This structure is supposed to bring benefits in terms of functioning and economic performance of the respective systems. The transformation into the ”hub-and-spoke” is not only non-equivalent (regarding the original graph of the system), but is also, in general, non unique. The structure sought is composed of two kinds of elements - nodes of the graph (stations, airports, havens, etc.), namely: the subgraph of hubs, which, in principle, ought to constitute a complete sub-graph (a clique), and the ”spokes”, i.e. the subsets of nodes, each of which is connected in the ultimate structure only with one of the hubs. The paper proposes a relaxation of the hub-and-spoke structure by allowing the hub subgraph not to be complete, but at least connected, with a definite ”degree of completeness” (alpha), from where the name of ”alpha-clique”. It is shown how such structures can be obtained and what are the resulting benefits for various assumptions, regarding such structures. The benefits are measured here with travel times. The desired structures are sought with an evolutionary algorithm. It is shown on an academic example how the results vary and how the conclusions, relevant for practical purposes, can be drawn from such analyses, done with the methods here presented.

An unsteady mixed convection flow of a visco-elastic, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid in a hot vertical channel is analyzed. The vertical channel is filled with a porous medium. The temperature of one of the channel plates is considered to be fluctuating span-wise cosinusoidally, i.e., [...]. A magnetic field of uniform strength is applied perpendicular to the planes of the plates. The magnetic Reynolds number is assumed very small so that the induced magnetic field is neglected. It is also assumed that the conducting fluid is gray, absorbing/emitting radiation and non-scattering. Governing equations are solved exactly for the velocity and the temperature fields. The effects of various flow parameters on the velocity, temperature and the skin friction and the Nusselt number in terms of their amplitudes and phase angles are discussed with the help of figures.

Artykuł poświęcony jest przechowywanemu w kolegiacie kołobrzeskiej obrazowi przedstawiającemu „Mądrą kobietę” i recepcji typu ikonograficznego, do którego należy. Kompozycja jest nietypowa, pełna symboli i nieoczywistych znaków, które objaśnia umieszczona po obu stronach przedstawienia inskrypcja. Ponadto, w XVIII w. umieszczono na tablicy informację o jej fundatorze, roku, w którym znalazła się ona w kościele oraz upamiętniono renowację obrazu. Obraz wpisuje się we wcale popularną w późnym średniowieczu grupę przedstawień parenetycznych, których zadaniem było pokazywanie wzorców odpowiednich postaw. Wzorce te, dzięki wynalezieniu oraz upowszechnieniu technik graficznych, mogły trafić do coraz większej liczby odbiorców. Podobnie było z kompozycją, która znajduje się w Kołobrzegu: w I połowie XVI w. wizerunki mądrej kobiety zostały wydrukowane w Kolonii, Amsterdamie oraz niezidentyfikowanej pracowni na terenie Rzeszy. Z biegiem czasu formuła została wzbogacona o wizerunek mądrego mężczyzny. Choć w najstarszych realizacjach ilustracji towarzyszył komentarz, późniejsze odbitki zawierają jedynie ilustrację, co, wydaje się, dowodzi sporej popularności kompozycji.
The article is devoted to the painting stored in the Kołobrzeg collegiate church, representing "A wise woman", and to the reception of the iconographic type it belongs to. The composition is untypical, full of symbols and non-obvious signs, explained in the inscriptions placed on both sides of the representation. Moreover, in the 18th century an information was placed on the panel about its founder, the year it came to the church, and its renovation. The painting belongs to quite popular in the late Middle Ages group of parenetic representations, which were intended to demonstrate models of proper attitudes. These models, due to the invention and dissemination of graphic techniques, could find their way to more and more numerous recipients. Similar holds true for the composition which is found in Kołobrzeg: in the first half of the 16th century, images of wise woman were printed in Cologne, Amsterdam, and in an unidentified workshop in the German Reich. Over the course of time the formula was enriched with an image of a wise man. Although in the oldest realizations the picture was accompanied with a commentary, the later copies contain the picture alone which seems to prove considerable popularity of the composition.

It must be accepted that Poland has used 25 years of political and economic freedom to generate the development of country in many areas. Th e passage of years has confi rmed the stability of Polish and our credibility for investors, which is one of the most important determinants of development. Currently, aft er the election campaign for the European Parliament, it can be observed, that in Poland, despite the noticeable economic growth, rising the living standards and a numbers of similar circumstances, Polish society falls into irrational contestation, negation and they change the current achievements into the populist and dangerous socio-economic fi gures. Poland in its stability is a young country and it needs to maintain the exchange course toward stabilization. It is essential, urgent and economically safe for Poland to access to the euro zone. Th e political factor supporting this idea is exhausted and sometimes in crises. Th erefore, it is necessary to give the support to activities that promote the entry into the euro zone. Th at kind of support should be given by the institution of higher education – colleges and universities with of economic, fi nancial or political profi les, A good example of such activities in that fi eld are action undertaken by the Alcide De Gasperi University of Euroregional Economy in Józefów. In this paper, an attempt has been made to present the semantic and axiological substance of wisdom hidden in the consciousnesses of two different, namely Polish and Lithuanian, linguistic-cultural communities. The analysis belongs to a branch of linguistics, interpreting language in terms of concepts, viewing it as a source of knowledge about people themselves, different communities, their mentality, ways of perception and interpretations of the way the world is. As a model to present the most thorough understanding of wisdom, the method of cognitive definition proposed by Jerzy Bartmiński is applied. Linguistic-cultural images of wise [person], understood as the concretizations of wisdom have to reveal him/her in opposition to stupid. The cognitive picture of wise is for the most part based on the analysis of features of character and appearance, portrayed behavior, interpersonal relations and the way others have as a perception of wise. Many cognitive parameters of wisdom are revealed while exploring the interactions between people and that of nature (plants, animals) which surrounds them and investigating deeper interpersonal relations with other people. The material for research was taken from Polish and Lithuanian proverbs. The latter occur as a result of world perception, everyday life observation, confrontations with its phenomenon. The proverbs are taken from compendiums of Polish and Lithuanian proverbs: Nowa księga przysłów i wyrażeń przysłowiowych (The New Book of Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases) by Julian Krzyżanowski and Lietuvių patarlės (Lithuanian Proverbs), Patarlių paralelės (Parallels of Proverbs) by Kazys Grigas. Given as cognitive definitions the cultural visions of wise, despite all the emphasized differences, enable us to perceive many evaluations of wise similar or even common to Polish and Lithuanian cultures.
Zamierzeniem artykułu jest próba przedstawienia semantycznej i aksjologicznej treści pojęcia mądrości tkwiącej w świadomości dwóch odrębnych wspólnot językowo-kulturowych – polskiej i litewskiej. Przeprowadzona analiza mieści się w nurcie badań językoznawczych, traktujących język jako źródło wiedzy o człowieku, jego mentalności i systemie wartości, sposobie postrzegania i interpretacji świata. Narzędziem opisu jest zaproponowana przez Jerzego Bartmińskiego metoda definicji kognitywnej. Językowo-kulturowe obrazy człowieka mądrego, stanowiąceukonkretnioną wizję abstrakcyjnego pojęcia mądrości, przedstawiają go w opozycji do człowieka głupiego. Obraz człowieka mądrego obejmuje cechy jego charakteru oraz wyglądu, mechanizmów zachowań, charakterystycznych miejsc przebywania oraz uwidacznia związek z zajmowaną przez niego pozycją społeczną. Wiele parametrów kognitywnych mądrości ujawnia się w trakcie analizy różnorodnych relacji człowieka z otaczającą go przyrodą (roślinami, zwierzętami) oraz wynika z bardziej skomplikowanych układów – ze stosunków z innymi ludźmi. Materiał analityczny stanowiły paremia polskie i litewskie, traktowane jako rezultat poznawania świata, obserwacji życia codziennego, zderzenia z różnymi jego zjawiskami. W badaniach wykorzystane zostały kompendia przysłów polskich i litewskich: Nowa księga przysłów i wyrażeń przysłowiowych pod red. Juliana Krzyżanowskiego oraz Lietuvių patarlės (Przysłowia litewskie), Patarlių paralelės (Paralele przysłów) pod red. Kazysa Grigasa. Ujęte w strukturę definicji kognitywnych kulturowe wizje człowieka mądrego, mimo istniejących różnic, pozwalają wyodrębnić sporo wartościowań podobnych albo nawet wspólnych, charakterystycznych dla kultur polskiej i litewskiej.

A homeomorphism f:X → X of a compactum X with metric d is expansive if there is c > 0 such that if x,y ∈ X and x ≠ y, then there is an integer n ∈ ℤ such that $d(f^n(x),f^n(y)) > c$. A homeomorphism f: X → X is continuum-wise expansive if there is c > 0 such that if A is a nondegenerate subcontinuum of X, then there is an integer n ∈ ℤ such that $diami f^n(A) > c$. Clearly, every expansive homeomorphism is continuum-wise expansive, but the converse assertion is not true. In [6], we defined the notion of chaotic continua of homeomorphisms and proved the existence of chaotic continua of continuum-wise expansive homeomorphisms. Also, we studied indecomposability of chaotic continua. In this paper, we investigate further more properties of indecomposability of chaotic continua and their composants. In particular, we prove that if f:X → X is a continuum-wise expansive homeomorphism of a plane compactum $X ⊂ ℝ^2$ with dim X > 0, then there exists a σ-chaotic continuum Z (σ = s or u) of f such that Z is an indecomposable subcontinuum of X and for each z ∈ Z the composant c(z) of Z containing z coincides with the continuum-wise σ-stable set $V^σ(z;Z)$.

The paper presents the results of determination of the weighing indicators of the features group associated with ergonomics and work safety of agricultural machinery ES (ergonomics and safety) in rating their global quality. The research was carried out on farm tractor, considered as energy farm machine. The experts recognize ergonomics and safety as important (14%), but not the most important characteristics of the four universal criteria of tractors. According to a group of selected experts (scientists, journalists and farmers) agricultural tractors should primarily be reliable (42%) and functional (38%). The same experts using the same method i.e. pair wise comparison method of Saaty, have determined an importance ranking of nine detailed criteria of ES characteristic. At this level of the hierarchy process the all of specific criteria ES1ES9 may be accepted as equally important in assessing the quality of agricultural tractors, which means that they have been well chosen.
W pracy zamieszczono wyniki badań określenia współczynników wagowych grupy cech związanych z ergonomią i bezpieczeństwem pracy maszyn rolniczych ES (ergonomics and safety) w ocenie ich jakości globalnej. Przedmiotem badań był ciągnik rolniczy, traktowany jako energetyczna maszyna rolnicza. Eksperci uznali ergonomię i bezpieczeństwo za ważną (14%), ale nie najważniejszą charakterystykę spośród czterech uniwersalnych kryteriów głównych ciągników rolniczych. Według celowo dobranej grupy ekspertów (naukowców, dziennikarzy i rolników) ciągniki rolnicze powinny być przede wszystkim niezawodne (42%) i funkcjonalne (38%). Eksperci tą samą metodą porównywania parami Saaty’ego określili wagi dziewięciu kryteriów szczegółowych charakterystyki ES. Na tym poziomie hierarchii procesu wszystkie kryteria szczegółowe ES1-ES9 można uznać za jednakowo ważne w ocenie jakości ciągników rolniczych, co oznacza, że zostały dobrze dobrane.

Opis:
W Polskich mediach, nawet tych ambitnych, brak jest filozoficznych analiz oraz komentarzy do życia intelektualnego i politycznego. Co więcej, brak również zapotrzebowania na nie. Ta konstatacja skłania do poszukiwania przyczyn. Jedną z głównych autor widzi w, oczyszczonym z odniesień do rzeczywistości społeczno-kulturalno-intelektualnej, sposobie wprowadzania w filozofię licealistów i studentów. Naucza się jej w porządku historycznym, skupiając się na chronologii oraz przedstawiając filozoficzne koncepcje jako teorie wyrafinowane intelektualnie i oderwane od świata zwykłych ludzi. Teorie, które czasami wchodzą w interakcje i bardzo rzadko ze światem. Że można i należy inaczej pokazuje autor, przyglądając się trzem strategiom nauczania: historycznej, problemowo-życiowej oraz zagadnieniowo-historycznej. Główną część artykułu poświęca on właśnie opisowi tych strategii w oparciu o analizę najbardziej popularnych w Polsce podręczników do filozofii.
Polish media, even those ambitious ones, are not concerned about philosophical analyses or commentaries on our intellectual or political life. Moreover, there is no public demand for them, which induces us to investigate the problem further. According to the author, one of the main reasons is the way in which philosophy is taught in secondary schools and universities; it is ‘sterile’, i.e., deprived of any social, cultural or intellectual context. The prevailing approach is the historical (chronological) one, in which philosophical concepts are presented as intellectually sophisticated theories, very distant from everyday life. Those theories may sometimes interact with one another but hardly ever with the world. Analyzing three strategies of teaching philosophy; namely, the historical, worldly-wise and problem-in-its-historical-context ones, the author tries to prove that a variety of approaches are possible. The main body of the article is devoted to a description of the above mentioned strategies, basing on an analysis of some most popular textbooks used in teaching philosophy.

The article analyses the development of the holy war in East Rome from its beginning until the 11th century. The article takes the stance that it is meaningless what the official religious doctrine was when the soldiers themselves believed and followed the doctrine of holy war which promised a place in heaven for all fallen soldiers.
