The paper introduces a comprehensive investigation in end winding inductances of large two-pole turbo-generators. With the aid of an analytic-numeric approach, where Neumann's formula is applied, the influence of geometric characteristics of double-layer stator end windings with involute shape is analysed. This parameter study results in approximation formulas for the stator self and mutual inductances at stand level as well as for the common used end winding leakage inductance. In order to consider field affecting components as pressure plate, flux shield, rotor shaft and rotor retaining ring, finite elements models for two machines (250 MVA and 1150 MVA) are created and computed. The results are integrated in the developed approximation formulas. Finally the simulation results of machine 1 are compared to the data of two different measurements. All approaches introduced in this paper show good correlation. The high speed of the analytic-numeric calculation is combined with the accuracy and opportunity to consider field affecting components within the extensive finite element computation successfully.

The article presents a methodology of a winding machine modernization. The methodology is based on the use of a medium-voltage regenerative converter, the replacement of the machine supply and control system along with the air- brake system. Additionally, a computer-based system for visualization and registration of the winding machine operations was described.

This paper investigates the possibilities for developing a pole-changing winding with a pole ratio of 3:4 with improved electromagnetic properties. Such a winding can be used in two-speed induction motors for turbo mechanisms. The scheme of the new winding was obtained by using a discretely-specified spatial function method developed at the Tashkent State Technical University. A comparison of the parameters obtained for a similar winding received by the pole amplitude modulation method has been presented. Design of a new motor with a new winding is developed based on the standard induction motor. The paper presents results of laboratory tests, too.

The concentrated winding (CW) is obviously different from the traditional distributed winding (DW) in the arrangement of windings and the calculation of winding factors, which will inevitably lead to different performances of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). In order to analyze the differences between the CW and the DW in the performance, a 3 kW, 1500 r/min PMSM is taken as an example to establish a 2-D finite element model. The correctness of the model is verified by comparing experimental data and calculated data. Firstly, the finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the electromagnetic field of the PMSM, and the performance parameters of the PMSM are obtained. On this basis, the influences of the two winding structures on the performance are quantitatively analyzed, and the differences between the two winding structures on the performance of the PMSM will be determined. Finally, the differences of efficiency between the two winding structures are obtained. In addition, the influences of the winding structures on eddy current loss are further studied, and the mechanism of eddy current loss is revealed by studying the eddy current density. The analysis of this paper provides reference and practical value for the optimization design of the PMSM.

This paper studies the influence of different cooling technologies on the power density of a traction machine for heavy-duty distribution transport. A prototype induction machine is built with a housing cooling jacket, potted end-windings, entire winding cooling, and shaft cooling. Electromagnetic finite element and thermal lumped-parameter models are parameterized and verified using test bench measurements. The influence of each thermal resistance along the heat paths is studied and discussed. The results are used for studying different cooling technologies. The results indicate an improvement of the continuous power density up to 108% using shaft cooling and up to 15.6% using entire winding cooling.

This paper reports a new strand wire winding method in a solenoidal coil with limited geometry that enables good impedance matching. In the proposed method strand wires are wound layer-by-layer on top of each other allowing one to set equivalent inductance and resistance of the coil to desired values while obtaining dense magnetic flux and high current carrying capacity. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, simple model setups were constructed with solenoidal coils composed of copper wire strands wound according to the proposed method, and a plastic pipe. The measurements were repeated with a metal shell placed inside the coil to model a complete heating system. System inductance and resistance were measured at two different frequencies. The results show that with the new winding method it is possible to increase a coil’s turn number and the number of strand layers composed by the coil. Also, adding and removing strand layers in the proposed coil architectures enable inductance and resistance values to decrease and increase, respectively, in a controlled way. To understand changes of system parameters, simulations were also performed. The calculated inductance and resistance values in the simulations agree well with the measurement results and magnetic flux distribution created in the system demonstrates the changes.

A tension control system which simulates the effect of tension force in the filament winding machines has been designed and implemented in the present study. Filament Winding (FW) machines are widely used in Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) composite production systems in which they have a pretensioning system to optimize the tension of the fiber during winding process. The precise control of the winding path needs highly mechatronic systems. The designed control system consists of magnetic break, servo motor, a PID control unit, a load cell and a data converter. The tension of the carbon fiber was measured by a load cell and compared to the preset value to keep the tension of the carbon fiber in predefined certain range.

The submitted paper deals with the increased energy efficiency of induction machines by means of the so-called combined stator winding. Two basic variants of this winding, the series and parallel ones, are shown. The suppression of higher harmonics is analysed by means of the method of space vectors and symmetrical components. It is shown that the so-called series variant of the combined winding has a better ability to suppress higher spatial harmonics. The commonly used combined winding has, however, a longer pitch and thus bigger stator resistance and greater consumption of copper. The paper presents a proposal of an adapted combined winding whose pitch is smaller than that of the used three-phase winding. This fact results in decreasing the consumption of copper conductors with preserving the energy efficiency. The results of the analysis have been verified by measurements on physical models of machines with the combined and the adapted combined windings.

This paper presents an estimation of high-frequency winding resistance and power loss in individual inductor layers made of foil, taking into account the skin and proximity effects. Approximated equations for power loss in each layer are given and the optimal values of foil thickness for each layer are derived. It is shown that the winding resistance of individual layers significantly increases with the operating frequency and the layer number, counting from the center of an inductor. The winding resistance of each foil layer exhibits a minimum value at an optimal layer thickness. The total winding resistance increases with the total number of layers.

In the paper a vibroacoustic method of diagnostics of the mechanical state of an active part of a transformer is presented. The analysis is performed on the signal of bank vibrations in a transient stage of work of an unloaded transformer - during the first few seconds after connecting to the power supply. The method is based on SSM algorithm (Spectral Subtraction Method) reducing the ‘disturbing’ impact of magnetostriction phenomenon on the measurement. It was concluded that using, in the process of diagnostics of an active part of a transformer unit, only the vibroacoustic method does not provide certain conclusions. Experimental research proved high usefulness of the presented V-SSM method (Vibroacoustic Spectral Subtraction Method) when accompanied by FRA method (Frequency Response Analysis) in winding defect diagnostics.

This paper presents a comparison of an AC radial flux interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor with the distributed winding (DW) and concentrated winding (CW). From time to time, manufacturers of electric vehicles change the design of electric motors, such changes may include changing the DW into CW and vice versa. A change to the winding in a radial permanent magnet synchronous motor may lead to a change in motor parameters during motor operation and /or change in the distribution of the magnetic field and thermal circuit of the electrical machine. The electromagnetic analysis, efficiency map, mechanical stress, and thermal analysis of the machine with the DW and CW are presented in this paper. This article describes the advantages and disadvantages of selected stator winding designs and helps understand manufacturers’ designers how the DW and CW play a key role in achieving the designed motor’s operational parameters such as continuous performance. Analyzing the performance of both machines will help identify their advantages and disadvantages with regard to thermal phenomena, magnetic field and operational parameters of the presented IPM prototypes. Both prototypes are based on commonly used topologies such as 12/8 (slot/pole) and 30/8 (slot/pole) IPM motors consisting of magnets arranged in a V-shape. The AC IPM motor was designed for an 80 kW propulsion system to achieve 170 N·m at a base speed of 4 500 rpm. Modern CAD tools are utilized throughout the numerical computations based on 2-D finite element methods. Selected test data are used to verify and validate the accuracy of finite element models.

W artykule przedstawiono przekształtnikowe układy sterowania napędów, opracowane w Instytucie EMAG, ich podstawowe parametry oraz możliwości zastosowań w instalacjach przemysłowych. Zaprezentowano zalety, a także możliwości sterowania mikroprocesorowego tych napędów w zastosowaniu do maszyn wyciągowych i przepływowych. Omówiono sposób rozwiązania problemów związanych z koniecznością precyzyjnej regulacji momentu przy bardzo małych prędkościach obrotowych przez zastosowanie regulatora adaptacyjnego oraz problemy hamowania dynamicznego przy prędkościach maksymalnych. W krótkim podsumowaniu przedstawiono zalety zastosowania napędu przekształtnikowego zarówno w aspekcie oszczędności energii, jak i uzyskiwanych parametrów pracy maszyny czy zmniejszenia oddziaływania na sieć zasilającą.
In this article converter control systems of drives are presented, developed in the EMAG Institute, as well as their basic technical specifications and applicability in industrial installations. The control system of the converter drive has been described and the advantages and possibilities of these drives being microprocessor controlled have been presented, when applied to winding machines, as well as to fluid-flow machine drives. The solution for the issue of constructing the system and specific aspects of its application to control the driving system of winding machine have been described. The way of solving problems regarding the necessity of regulating the moment with precision when the rotational speed is very low, using the adaptive control, has been discussed, as well as issue of dynamic braking with maximum speeds. In a brief summary the advantages of the application of converter drive have been presented, regarding both energy saving and obtained parameters of machine operation or reducing the effect on power supply network.

The paper presents the idea of a Cross Test Comparison (CTC) method for the analysis of Frequency Response measurement results. FRA is used to detect deformations or electric faults in transformer windings. At the current stage of FRA method development, it is possible to perform repetitive measurements, however there are still problems with interpretation of test results. Authors of this paper found that analysis of results coming from two test setups (end-to-end and interwinding capacitive), which is done simultaneously is a more sensitive tool to detect some faults, and in addition it binds the influence of both voltage sides of a transformer in a single test result. The paper contains results obtained from laboratory tests, where controlled deformations were introduced into windings and also measurements from industry. The CTC method combines both the end-to-end and capacitive interwinding measurements into a single dataset, by subtracting the amplitudes at the corresponding frequencies. The resulting combined dataset is more sensitive in identifying deviations from baseline measurements.

Dangerous events that take place in the mining plant always give us a chance to rethink whether the design of a faulty device could have been improved enough to prevent such a situation. The same scenario takes place with mining shaft hoist. Withouta doubt, a starting point for discussions about additional mining shaft hoist security measures is the last dangerous situation that took place in a Silesian mine in 2017. This article is an analysis of the probable causes and conclusions that can be drawn from that incident.
