Opis:
Although Syrian high-yielding wheat cultivars grown under Mediterranean conditions include acceptable levels of resistance to biotic constraints, little is known about their susceptibility to Fusarium head blight (FHB), a harmful disease of wheat cultivation worldwide. The capacity of 16 fungal isolates of four FHB species to confer the disease on spikes and spikelets of six widely grown old and modern Syrian durum and bread wheat cultivars with known in vitro quantitative resistance to FHB was evaluated. Quantitative traits were visually assessed using spray and point inoculations for determining disease development rates, disease incidence (DI) and disease severity (DS) under controlled conditions. Differences in pathogenicity and susceptibility among wheat cultivars were observed, emphasizing the need for breeders to include aggressive isolates or a mixture of isolates representative of the FHB diversity in their screenings for selection of disease resistant cultivars. Bread wheat cultivars showed lower levels of spike and spikelet damage than durum cultivars regardless of the date of cultivar release. Overall, the six wheat cultivars expressed acceptable resistance levels to initial fungal infection and fungal spread. Quantitative traits showed significant correlation with previous standardized area under disease progress curve (AUDPCstandard) data generated in vitro. Thus, the predictive ability of AUDPCstandard appears to be crucial in assessing pathogenicity and resistance in adult wheat plants under controlled conditions. While in the Mediterranean countries the risk of disease is progressively increasing, the preliminary data in this report adds to our knowledge about four FHB species pathogenicity on a Syrian scale, where the environment is quite similar to some Mediterranean wheat growing areas, and show that Syrian cultivars could be new resistant donors with favorable agronomical characteristics in FHB-wheat breeding programs.

Opis:
Fusarium head blight resistance (FHB) can be achieved by using improved adapted varieties as crossing partners or by a marker-assisted introgression of mapped QTL from non-adapted sources. In this long-term study Fhb1 on chromosome 3BS and Qfhs.ifa-5A located on chromosome 5A were introgressed into European elite spring and winter wheat to test effects on FHB resistance and side effects on agronomic performance and F. graminearum isolates and mixtures. The introgression of the QTL Fhb1 and Qfhs.ifa-5A from the Sumai 3-descendant CM82036 could be performed in the shortest possible way by marker-assisted backcrossing. They were both validated in European elite wheat background. Effects on FHB resistance were, on average, only about half of the effect in the original mapping populations. In the best phenotypically and marker-selected BC0 line of spring wheat FHB was reduced from 40 to 4.3% of disease symptoms by introgressing both QTL, in the best BC3 line of winter wheat the reduction was 28 and 37% for the moderately resistant and highly susceptible recurrent parent, respectively. Introgression of both QTL simultaneously did not result in significantly higher FHB resistance than introgression of only one of both QTL. Small significant negative effects on grain yield were detected in the Anthus but not in the Opus BC3F2:5 backcross population when both QTL were introgressed. Backcrossing with only Qfhs.ifa-5A did not reduce grain yield significantly. Differences in heading date, plant height and quality traits were in all cases small although often significant. Selection of lines with improved resistance level and similar high yield level like the recurrent parent was feasible. Stability of FHB resistance mediated by both QTL was stable across 22 Fusarium isolates from Europe and Canada and six binary mixtures. Competition effects between isolates in mixtures were obvious but could not be attributed to the resistance of the host. In conclusion, marker-based backcrossing is a feasible option for introgressing Fhb1 or Qfhs.ifa-5A QTL into the high-yielding, quality-oriented European wheat gene pool.

There were performed tests on a set of twenty single substitutions of the D-genome chromosomes from various bread wheats into winter triticale Presto, a set of seven disomic addition lines of chromosomes from winter rye Dańkowskie Zlote to winter wheat Grana, and all parental forms to study on the chromosome location of major genes that are resposible for seedling stage resistance to Puccinia recondita f.sp.tritici in triticale. For each line, seedlings developed to two-leaf stage were exposured to four pathotypes of the pathogen predominant in Poland to test them in the greenhouse conditions. There were high resistance among the substitution lines of Presto, 1D(1A), 4D(4R), and 5D(5R) suggesting that chromosomes introduced from the D-genome carried resistance genes. Among the addition lines, GH2R was highly resistant. Resistance to rust at seedlings stage of Presto lines of D- genome and addition lines Grana (wheat) / Dankowskie Zlote (rye) shows that chromosome 2R is responsible for the resistance to the disease.

Opis:
Eyespot can reduce yields, even up to 50%. There are four genetically characterized resistances in wheat varieties, controlled by: (1) the Pch1 gene, transferred from Aegilops ventricosa; (2) the Pch2 gene, originating from wheat variety Capelle Desprez; (3) the Pch3 gene, originating from Dasypyrum villosum; and (4) the Q.Pch.jic-5A gene, a quantitative trait locus (QTL) located on chromosome 5A of Capelle Desprez. However, those loci have drawbacks, such as linkage of Pch1 with deleterious traits and limited effectiveness of Pch2 against the disease. Here we present an initial study which aims to characterize wheat pre-registration breeding lines carrying 12 eyespot resistance genes, consider their resistance expression in inoculation tests and the influence of resistance genotypes on the yield. We selected four groups of breeding lines, carrying: (1) the Pch1 gene alone: one line; (2) the Pch2 gene alone: four lines; (3) the Q.Pch.jic-5A gene alone: one line; and (4) Pch1 + Q.Pch.jic-5A: three lines. For the first time, the effect of the combination of Pch1 and Q.Pch.jic-5A genes was compared with resistance conferred by Pch1 or Q.Pch.jic-5A alone. We found significant differences between infection scores evaluated in resistant lines carrying Pch1 and Q.Pch.jic-5A alone, while no differences in terms of the level of resistance expression were detected between Pch1 alone and Pch1 + Q.Pch.jic-5A, and between wheat lines carrying Pch1 and Pch2 alone. Moreover, we demonstrated that the Pch1 gene, together with an Ae. ventricosa segment, caused statistically significant yield losses, both as a single eyespot resistance source or in a combination with Q.Pch.jic-5A. Yield scores showed that wheat lines with Q.Pch.jic-5A had the highest yields, similar to the yielding potential of Pch2-bearing lines and control varieties.

Opis:
Gene postulation is one of the fastest and most cost-effective methods for identifying seed- ling leaf rust resistance genes in wheat cultivars. Many researchers use this approach to identify Lr genes in wheat cultivars. The purpose of our research was to identify seedling leaf rust resistance genes in 20 wheat cultivars from different breeding centers of Russia, Ukraine and Germany. Forty-two near isogenic Thatcher lines and 10 Puccinia triticina isolates were used for gene postulation. When assessing the infection types to cultivars and lines, a scale was used, according to Oelke and Kolmer. In 20 wheat cultivars 19 Lr genes were postulated: 2c, 3, 10, 3bg, 3ka, 14a, 17, 18, 23, 25, 26, 30, 33, 40, 44, 50, B, Exch, Kanred. The most common for cultivars was the Lr10 gene. In five cultivars, showing high field resistance, most postulated seedling genes (Lr2c, Lr3, Lr10, Lr14а, Lr26, Lr33) were not effective in the adult stage. It is possible that resistance of such cultivars is associated with APR genes, the postulation of which requires an expansion in the number and spectrum of P. triticina isolate virulence. Most of the studied cultivars (60%) have recently been en- tered into the register (2015–2019) and in the field show a stable or moderately susceptible response to P. triticina infection, despite the fact that the Lr genes postulated in them were not effective in the adult stage. The data obtained indicated a variety of genotypes of the studied cultivars, as well as the tendency of breeders to use the effect of pyramiding ineffec- tive genes, which can prolong the resistance of the cultivar. Annual monitoring of varieties is necessary in each region, especially when reacting with a medium susceptible type (MS), which may indicate the initial stage of resistance loss.

Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum Schw.) is one of the most dangerous fungal diseases in wheat production decreasing grain yield up to 50% or more what depends on both environmental factors and genotype. Testing of inoculated artificially new Bc winter wheat lines for their resistance to FHB was the objective of the study. In 2008 and 2009 two and five lines of tested 12 new ones respectively were shown to be more resistant than Sana cultivar used as a standard. Majority of the winter wheat lines exceeded level of resistance standing out by Bc 7 and Bc 1 and Bc Lira variety as the highest yielding variety was registered by CCVR in 2009.

Obserwowano wysoką częstotliwości wirulencji patogenu (70–100%) w stosunku do większości genów odporności. W omawianym okresie badań niską frekwencję wirulencji (1–30%) badanych izolatów P. triticina notowano wobec genów: Lr2b, Lr2c, Lr23, Lr28, Lr38 i Lr52. Wszystkie badane izolaty były awirulentne wobec genów: Lr2a, Lr9, Lr19 i Lr25. W oparciu o zestaw 15 linii blisko izogenicznych: Lr1, Lr2a, Lr2b, Lr2c, Lr3, Lr9, Lr11, Lr15, Lr17, Lr19, Lr21, Lr23, Lr24, Lr26, Lr28 zidentyfikowano 21 patotypów P. triticina. The aim of this study was to analyze virulence and to identify the pathotypes of Puccinia triticina collected from wheat in Poland in years 2013–2015. A total of 58 isolates of P. triticina were tested. The isolates were tested for virulence on seedlings of 32 near isogenic lines (NILs) of Thatcher cultivar comprising different Lr resistance genes. High frequency (70–100%) of isolates virulent towards the majority of Lr genes was recorded. Low frequency of virulence (1–30%) against the lines carrying Lr2b, Lr2c, Lr23, Lr28, Lr38 and Lr52 genes was observed. All investigated isolates were avirulent to plants with genes: Lr2a, Lr9, Lr19 and Lr25. 21 pathotypes of P. triticina were identified with the use of 15 NILs possessing the resistance genes Lr1, Lr2a, Lr2b, Lr2c, Lr3, Lr9, Lr11, Lr15, Lr17, Lr19, Lr21, Lr23, Lr24, Lr26, Lr28. Pathotypes 12722 and 12723 appeared to be most frequent in the group of isolates tested. Pathotypes with virulence to plants with 6 and 7 resistance genes prevailed.

Sixty-six wheat cultivars grown in Belarus, Poland, Russia and the Ukraine were tested for mildew response to a collection of 11 different isolates of Erysiphe graminis DC f. sp. tritici Marchal. Nineteen cultivars have shown a susceptible reaction and eighteen were characterized by susceptible or intermediate responses. Fourteen cultivars revealed isolate-specific response patterns that could be attributed to major known resistance genes or gene combinations. Twelve cultivars have one documented gene: Pm5 in eight cultivars, Pm2 in two cultivars and Pm8 also in two cultivars. One cultivar has two genes (Pm2 + Pm6), while another cultivar carries a combination of three genes (Pm1 + Pm2 + Pm6). Fifteen cultivars were characterized by response patterns not documented so far or by a known resistance response combined with an undocumented resistance. Apparently three cultivars with the T1BL.1RS wheat-rye translocation have a gene suppressing the Pm8 mildew resistance. One cultivar was resistant to all the used isolates. Its resistance might be conditioned by an unknown major gene or combination of genes.

Zmiany tego parametru obliczone wg dwóch w/w metod w funkcji wilgotności były jednocześnie różne, czego przyczyny należy upatrywać w udziale odkształceń sprężystych i plastycznych w procesie ściskania.
The paper presents analysis of the Kobra-variety wheat grain humidity effect on its crack resistance. Grains moisturized to five humidity levels (ranging from 10 to 18%) were pressed in the Zwick Z020 testing machine. Crack resistance measurement was based on energy expenditure determined by surface area under the load-strain curve to grain resistance limit and the index specified in the ASTM C 1018 guidelines. It has been proved that wheat grain crack resistance grows with humidity. Changes of this parameter calculated using both of the above-mentioned methods in relation to humidity differed at the same time. This was due to participation of elastic and plastic strains in pressing process.

The Czech winter wheat cv. Powdery mildew isolates avirulent on Pm8 and virulent on other Pm genes were used in the trials. Tests for resistance were carried out either on seedlings at the first leaf stage or on detached leaves cultured on benzimidazolagar. No segregation for resistant plants in F₂ of all crosses of the cv. Regina with cultivars possessing T1BL-1RS and SuPm8 indicates that Regina has SuPm8. The segregation ratio 3 resistant: 13 susceptible in the F₂ population of crosses between the cv. Regina and cultivars possessing T1BL-1RS and no SuPm8 also confirms the presence of SuPm8 in the cv. Regina. The obtained results also indicate that expression of Pm2 and Pm4b is not affected by SuPm8 and that SuPm8 does not affect stem rust resistance gene Sr31 located on 1RS segment.
