Opis:
The environment is considered an ideal machine, a system in which nothing happens without reason. Every transformation, action and stimulus has consequences that are not always immediately plain to see. It is because the environment is like communicating vessels, or a complex organism, in which everything is interdependent, and the organs work together. Despite the processes’ complexity and intricate yet logical correlations between the elements, it is not a perfect system. Examples are weather anomalies and, in extreme cases, cataclysms. The problem arises when man interferes with the environment. By polluting almost every possible place, he initiates irreversible changes, degrading the environment. This paper presents an analysis of atmospheric air pollution in the town of Supraśl, surface water from the Supraśl river, and soil samples from a selected area.

Textile industries are the major source of environmental pollution In terms of quality as well as quantity. The textile industries consume large quantities of water (200 m3/ton of product) out of which around 90% is appeared as wastewater. Textile wastewater contains dye as the major pollutant which is not only recalcitrant but also imparts intense color to the waste effluent. Improper disposal of textile wastewater causes serious environmental problems affecting the aquatic organism adversely. The present study deals with the detailed study of environmental issues and treatment options. The industry generates huge amount of wastewater contains toxic pollutants. Several treatment technologies are using now days with high efficiency and from the present study it was found that advanced oxidation process is very effective in terms of pollutants removal efficiency as well as cost requirement.

This paper presents the results of studies which aim was to determine the pollution of the water environment for both methods of preparation for the utilization of sewage sludge in agriculture. The study was conducted in 2008-2012 in lysimeters filled with light sandy soil (clayey sand). During the study variants with equal doses of nitrogen in an amount of 20 g . m-2 (15.7 g per one lysimeter) were supplied to the soil in sewage sludge and in the compost made from the same sludge. These variants were used three times for two species of perennial plants: Miscanthus gigantenus i Sida hermaphrodita Rusby. In a variant of sludge soil fertilizing, it was leached into water environment more than 12% of the applied nitrogen over 5 years of research. In case of compost nitrogen leaching was reduced to 8.1-10.0% of the quantity supplied to the soil.

Opis:
According to Hoekstra et al. (2011) the water footprint within a geographic area is defined as the total freshwater consumption and pollution within the boundaries of the area. The grey part of the water footprint refers to pollution and is an indicator of the water volume needed to assimilate a pollutant load that reaches a water body. It is possible then, based on the grey water footprint to estimate if the water available in a river at a particular crosssection will be sufficient to maintain a water pollution level (WPL) below 100%. The crossing of 100% indicates that the waste assimilation capacity has been fully consumed in this particular catchment. In this paper, the grey water footprint from nonpoint source pollution has been calculated based on long-term hydrometrological data for the upper part of a small agricultural catchment (area of 23.4 km2 ) (Zagożdżonka River) in central Poland. Based on land use and the amount of fertilizers applied in the catchment, together with information about the natural concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in the river, as well as maximum acceptable concentration, the water pollution level has been calculated for actual conditions. The estimation of future runoff decreases for the considered catchment (Banasik, Hejduk 2012) has been applied in order to estimate potential future water pollution levels. The calculation shows that, even when the management practices in this catchment remain as they are, including the current extensive crop production, the WPL of 100% will be exceeded in the year 2033 (for phosphorus) and 2043 (for nitrogen) due only to the decreasing availability of water.

The self-purification capacity of river water is an essential indicator for a healthy river. Various organic and inorganic pollutants, both from point sources and nonpoint sources, in most streams in Banjarmasin were beyond the river self-purification capacity, which caused a decrease in the river water quality. This study attempted to identify the river water pollution distribution in the city of Banjarmasin and determined the self-purification points. We used the purposive sampling technique to carry out river water sampling, with criteria for pollutant sources and distance of pollution taken into consideration. By using the trend analysis techniques, we analyzed the parameters concentration to relate it to the range of pollution so that we were able to identify the pollution distribution and determine the self-purification distances. The results indicated that the self-purification process could take place on the river flow in of Banjarmasin even though it did not reach the clean water zone. The river in Banjarmasin requires a longer purification distance so that the self-purification process can run correctly.

The Dojlidy Ponds, which include Dojlidy water dam, are located within Bialystok city limits in Podlasie area, Poland. The reservoir with a water surface of 34 ha and average depth of 1.75 m was constructed in 1962 as a result of Biala River damming. The researches were conducted in July, October and December 2014 as well as in March 2015. Each time five test samples were collected from spots located along the reservoir. Water samples were tested for the presence of ammonia nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, organic nitrogen, phosphates and organic phosphorus. The values of nutrient indicators exhibited high variability during the study period. The highest concentration of nitrite and nitrate nitrogen were observed in July, while the lowest in October – nitrite nitrogen, and in December – nitrate nitrogen. Different situation was observed after the analysis of phosphorus forms – the highest concentrations of organic phosphorus and phosphates were observed in December and the lowest in July. Relatively high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus forms identified in water samples were most likely caused by tributaries, due to the pollution from the reservoir catchment. Technical parameters of the object and location of the reservoir have undoubtedly an impact on the tested parameters contents.

Water pollution in rivers is still a crucial problem for the countries that use river water as the primary water source. This study aimed to determine the water quality of the Musi river and the content of heavy metals in water, sediment and mussels as well as to predict the water quality of the Musi river in the next five years. The water samples were taken from 18 stations (sampling points) from upstream to downstream to be checked physically, chemically and biologically. Prediction of the river water quality was made using the QUAL2Kw software. The research results show that the Musi River water is categorized as lightly polluted with concentrations of TSS and DO that have passed the threshold. The heavy metals in river water, such as Pb and Cr have also passed the quality standard. The Fe, Mn, and Zn concentrations are pretty high in the sediment. In turn, in mussels, the metals measured were Fe, Cu, and Zn. The prediction results reveal that several values of the river quality parameters will pass the threshold value with the same pattern tendency from each station.

Opis:
The Uszwica river catchment is located in the central part of Lesser Poland province, within Brzeski and Bocheński districts. The river is 61.2 km long, and its catchment area is 322.5 km2. It is characterized by forest-agricultural land use and high share of residential areas of both compact (the city of Brzesko) and dispersed nature. In the abiotic terms, the Uszwica in its upper course may be classified as a flysch stream (type 12). From the moment of joining the Niedźwiedź, stream until its discharge into the Vistula at km 151+700 it is a sand and clay lowland river (type 19). Hydrochemical research were conducted in the years 2011 and 2012 at two measurement-control points – one located near the mouth of the river (point 1) and one located about 7.5 km downstream from the city of Brzesko (point 2). Each month 18 water quality parameters were determined and they underwent comparative and statistical analyses. Basic descriptive statistics were calculated for both measurement-control points. Then, they were used to determine the ecological potential of the river and to evaluate water quality parameters with respect to its suitability as fish habitat and eutrophication risk. Significance of differences between the values of individual parameters recorded at different measurement-control points was estimated using non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test for α = 0.05. The same test was used to determine the significance of differences between individual parameters for the winter and summer season at each point. Analysis of the results revealed that water flowing via developed areas (point 2) was significantly less saturated with oxygen and contained higher amounts of suspended solids, organic matter and nutrients, as compared to the section of the river flowing mainly through extensively used agricultural areas. Therefore, the ecological potential of the river was considered good in its lower course and poor upstream from point 2. Disturbances in seasonal concentrations of some biogenic factors indicated high degree of water pollution in the middle course of the Uszwica. However, due to intense self-purification, water quality in the lower course was similar to that in natural conditions. On the entire investigated section of the Uszwica does not meet water quality requirements for salmonids and cyprinids, but the habitats are more favorable near the mouth of the river. Waterassessed at point 2 may be classified as eutrophic due to high concentration of total phosphorus.

Opis:
The research concerned the Wapienica dam reservoir, which is located in the Polish Carpathians, near the city of Bielsko-Biala. The dam closes the flow of water from the 11.1 km2 catchment. The forests cover about 90% of the catchment area, while the rest of the catchment constitutes grassland areas. The reservoir has a capacity of 1.05 million m3. The collected water is intended for supplying a water supply system. The catchment is treated as semi-natural, because within its borders the only works related to forest management are carried out. The aim of the research was evaluation of the water quality in this reservoir, including trophic status, based on the analyses carried out in 2015. It was found that the water was of good quality in basic physicochemical terms (e.g. suspension ≤13 mg∙dm-3,CODCr ≤11 mgO2∙dm-3, conductivity ≤82 µS∙cm-1, phosphates <0.05 mg∙dm-3, nitrates ≤5.1 mg∙dm-3, dissolved iron ≤0.12 mg∙dm-3). The contamination with heavy metals was not ascertained, with the exception of the zinc. The assessed sanitary indicators are worse – the bacteria of the Coli group and periodically also enterococci were observed in the reservoir water. The reservoir is not homogeneous in terms of biological production (the trophy degree). It is low in the upper part (oligotrophy generally) and increases in the part near the dam (mesotrophy, also eutrophy). The established presence of dangerous bacteria and symptoms of the reservoir eutrophication are disturbing in the context of the opinion on the purity of uninhabited mountain areas.

Opis:
1,3,7-trimethylxanthine (caffeine) is an ingredient of coffee, tea, energy drinks, drugs and cosmetics. Generally, it is the most consumed pharmaceutical substance all over the world. Although it is easily metabolized, caffeine is present in wastewaters generated by households. Therefore, its detection in streams and rivers shows that untreated wastewaters are discharged into environment. Determination of caffeine in waterways could be an indicator of their anthropogenic pollution. Rudawa is the river flowing through southern Poland, with the river basin area about 318 km2. It is a left tributary of the Vistula River, with the river mouth located in the Krakow city. Rudawa is one of the drinking water supplies for the city. It provides about 40000 m3 of water per year. Water used as a source of drinking water must be the highest quality. Therefore the river on which drinking water intakes are located is the subject of the special monitoring. Water quality monitoring has always been important on Rudawa river and it continues to be monitored today. The aim of this study has been to check whether the caffeine is present in Rudawa waters, to determine its concentration and localization of potential sources of pollution. Samples taken from the river in twelve selected locations along the Rudawa River and its tributaries have been analyzed. Solid phase extraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has been used. Caffeine isotope 13-C3 in methanol, Sigma Aldrich, has been used as an internal standard. The concentration of caffeine in samples has ranged from 40 to 380 ng/dm3.

We compared different net sampling methods for microplastic quantitative collection by sampling different water volumes with nets of different mesh sizes. Sampling covered freshwater lake and reservoir with a significant degree of eutrophication located in Central Poland. The fibres were the main type of plastic collected from sampling sites and constituted 83% of all microplastic particles. Fibres of 700-1900 μm dominated in the samples. The size of mesh affected the amount of fibres collected. Small fibres of 10-200 μm in length were collected using only a fine net of 20 μm mesh size. The total amount of fibres depended on sample volumes; concentrations of microplastics were higher for smaller water volumes. It is likely that clogging with phytoplankton and suspended particles reduced the filtration capacity of the finest nets when large volumes were sampled, which led to an underestimation of microplastic. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide evidence that the amount of small microfibres depends on mesh size and that the total microplastic abundance in freshwaters in Poland depends on the sample volume. We suggest sampling rather larger than smaller water volumes to assess the level of microplastic contamination more accurately, but clogging, which reduces the filtration capacity of finest nets, should be taken into account when eutrophic freshwater environments are studied.

Worldwide, there have been longstanding issues of heavy metal pollution of both ground and surface waters from industrial effluents. In this research, Daniella oliveri leaves were investigated as a precursor for the development of low-cost adsorbent for removing Pb(II) from aqueous media. The adsorbents (biosorbent and ash) were characterised using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Branueur-Emmet-Teller analysis (BET). The biosorbent (DO-B) and ash (DO-A) from Daniella oliveri leaves had a specific surface area of 574.5 m2/g and 723.0 m2/g respectively. Both adsorbents were mesoporous with pore diameter >2 nm. The ash was a better adsorbent for Pb(II) than the biosorbent powder, however, both adsorbents have over 99% removal of Pb(II) at optimal conditions. Best-fit isotherm for DO-B was Freundlich isotherm while no best fit for DO-A was observed. The adsorption for both adsorbents was best fit pseudo-second order kinetic model. Adsorbents from Daniella oliveri leaves could be used as an adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous media and can play an important role in mitigating the potential impact of the release of industrial effluent into the environment.

Geostatistical analysis are used in the natural sciences to the study of spatial dependency. In this study, an analysis of semivariance was used to describe the spatial variability of stream power and movement of dissolved compounds from the catchment. This method allowed for the identification of pollution sources in the catchment, especially in drained agricultural catchments. Research carried out in the agricultural catchment near Bialystok. Hydrochemical profile was performed under different conditions of flow at low, medium and high water levels of the river. Although each period was characterized by different hydrological conditions, but a common characteristic was the fact that the study was conducted in the winter season, during the period of plant dormancy. Hydrochemical profile made by measuring the electrical conductivity values measured every 10 m along the river. That was used for the analysis of semivariance. On this basis, it was found that the spatial correlation between samples of water in the stream is readable over a distance of about 140 meters. Above the distance the signal created by the source of the dissolved chemical compounds disappears, and the water stops its composition refer to the chemistry of the source. In the case of the analyzed catchment potential sources of pollution, were drainage systems. Because, they are arranged exactly as 130–140 m. Therefore, the analysis of semivariance allowed the identification pollution sources in a catchment.

Opis:
The results of five-year (2008–2012) hydrochemical research of the Poprad river, the right bank tributary to the Dunajec, were analyzed in the paper. The Poprad, 167 km long and with the catchment area of 2077.3 km2, flows for over 100 km through the territory of Slovakia, along the length of 31.1 km is a transboundary river, whereas its 31.0 km long reach is situated in Poland. Concerning its abiotic character, it is an eastern upland river of type 15. The research was conducted in three measurement-control points: 1) located in Leluchów on the Polish-Slovak border at 61.1 kilometer of the river course, 2) in Piwniczna-Zdrój – 23.9 km and 3) in Stary Sącz – 2.9 km before the Poprad outlet to the Dunajec. 21 physicochemical indices and 2 microbiological indicators were assessed in the water samples once a month using referential methods. The paper assesses changes of water quality classes and its usable values along the analyzed Poprad river reach. Moreover, statistical differences between the values of individual indices assessed in various measurement-control points were estimated by means of Mann-Whitney U nonparametric test. On the basis of the conducted analyses of the empirical data it was stated that due to the physicochemical indices, water quality along the whole length of the analyzed river reach was good (class II) – in points 1 and 3 it was determined by mean concentration of total suspended solids, whereas in point 2 COD-Mn values.

Fourteen (14) water quality parameters, namely pH, temperature, total alkalanity, total acidicity, dissolved oxygen (DO), 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total coliform, odour, taste, color, clarity, total hardness calcium (Ca),and magnesium (Mg). Results obtained showed that the mean pH readings ranges from 6.2 – 6.6 and temperature of the sample ranges from 24° C – 27° C. Total alkalinity ranges from 63-80mg/l, total acidity showed a great variation between the hand dug wells and borehole samples. DO concentrations of hand dug wells were less than that of boreholes and did not meet the WHO unit (5 -14 mg/l). The BOD5 of both boreholes and hand dug wells water sample were within the WHO standard (2 – 4 mg/l) for drinking, except borehole water sample from B4 with BOD value of 1.9. The water samples from both sources were odorless, colorless, tasteless and clear for consumption.

Opis:
Introduction. This article will deal with environmental pollution in cities including the problem of risk assessment. The aim of the study is to determine carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for the health of the population due to chemical contamination of air, water and food in the cities of the Krasnoyarsk region. Material and methods. The research was conducted in the Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Krasnoyarsk region. 5122 samples of air, 4863 samples of water and 6915 samples of food stuff have been analyzed. Concentration of chemical substances was the base on which individual carcinogenesis risk (ICR) and population carcinogenic conventional risks (PCCR) and non carcinogenic risks [1] have been calculated. In the industrial cities chemical pollution of air, water and food stuff including carcinogenic substances creates carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of morbidity of the population with the reinforcement of the complex impact, “with” which greatly exceeds the maximum acceptable risks. Results. Chemical pollution of environmental facilities in cities of the Krasnoyarsk region produce complex carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks which exceed maximum limit. The greatest shares in structure of complex carcinogenic risks are made in food stuff and water consumption in structure of complex non-carcinogenic risks as a result of air pollution and food stuff pollution. Conclusions. Obtained data could be used to set priorities in preventive measures to preserve health of the population in industrial cities of the Krasnoyarsk region.
Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w Centrum Higieny i Epidemiologii regionu Krasnojarskiego. Wykonano 5122 analizy powietrza, 4863 analizy wody i 6915 analiz żywności. Na podstawie stężenia substancji chemicznych obliczono indywidualne ryzyko kancerogenezy (ICR) oraz populacyjne umowne ryzyko kancerogenezy (PCCR) i ryzyko niekancerogenności. W miastach przemysłowych zanieczyszczenie chemiczne wody, powietrza i żywności, stwarza kancerogenne i niekancerogenne ryzyko zachorowalności populacyjnej, co jest potęgowane przez kompleksowy udział dodatkowych czynników i znacznie przekracza maksymalnie dopuszczalne ryzyko. Wyniki. Zanieczyszczenie chemiczne z obiektów środowiskowych w miastach krasnojarskich charakteryzuje kompleks kancerogennego i niekancerogennego ryzyka, które przekracza dopuszczalne maksimum. Największy udział w strukturze kompleksu ryzyka kancerogennego wykazuje konsumpcja żywności, natomiast udział wody pitnej wykazano w strukturze kompleksu ryzyka niekancerogennego, jako wynik skażenia powietrza i wody. Wnioski.

Arsenic (As) is a metalloid that causes severe water pollution due to its extravagant toxicity. Ceriodaphnia dubia, a freshwater crustacean, was selected as a model system to evaluate the degree of time and dosage dependent acute toxicity caused by pentavalent As [As(V)]. C. dubia were collected from a natural pond and treated with different concentrations of As(V) for 24 hours and 48 hours. For both 24 hours and 48 hours treatment periods, the mortality rates were increased significantly ( P< 0.05) with increase in As(V) concentrations. Simultaneously, it was also observed that As(V) - induced mortality in C. dubia also depended on the time of exposure to the metalloid. We propose this model as a low-cost technique towards rapid screening of water quality in relation to As contamination.

Opis:
Dunajec – a river in south Poland, together with the San River, is the most important right-bank tributary of the Vistula River. It flows into the Vistula River at its 160.6 km. The Upper Dunajec area starts at the spring and ends at the mouth of the Ochotnica stream (including the stream itself). The catchment of the upper Dunajec is placed in two districts: Tatrzański and Nowotarski. It is very important to keep the catchment as clean as possible due to the fact that it supplies both districts with drinkable water. The goal of my paper was to find out to what extent the upper Dunajec catchment was contaminated with phenols. All contaminants in water mostly come from chemical substances, bacteria and other microorganisms that are present in natural waters in huge amounts. These contaminants are permanent and resistant towards chemical or biochemical processes that are supposed to purify the water. Phenol and its derivatives are very toxic, ones of the most burdensome compounds for the environment. Sources of phenol compounds emission can be divided into two groups: of natural and of anthropogenic origin, i.e. resulting from human activity in industry, agriculture as well as in tourism. The most dangerous substances that cause contamination of water with phenols are wastewaters coming from plastics, paint pigments, varnish or glue factories and from pharmaceutical companies. Municipal wastewaters tend to contaminate water with phenols as well, however to smaller extent. Phenol and its derivatives are widely used in many branches of industry as well as in agriculture. In order to mark phenol concentrations, I applied the photometric method.
Do oznaczenia stężeń fenoli wykorzystano metodę fotometryczną.

The objective of the work was to evaluate the influence of gold nanoparticles, obtained by laser ablation, on the photocatalytic action of titanium dioxide in the improvement of the physical-chemical parameters of domestic greywater, with visualization by means of a PLC. The YAG laser equipment was used for the production of spherical gold nanoparticles, whereas the Raman spectroscope allowed characterizing the different particles contained in aqueous solutions. The solar photoreactor programmable and viewable from PLC with connection to sensors allowed determining the variations of the pH, EC, DO and FCL parameters. The work consisted of a control group (greywater + titanium dioxide) and an experimental group (greywater + titanium dioxide + gold nanoparticles). The titanium dioxide doses for both groups were 0.5 mg/L and the gold nanoparticles were 0.20 ml per liter of greywater only for the control group. The experiments were carried out on sunny days with the exposure periods of 30 and 60 minutes around solar noon with an average UV index of 13.35. Once the experiments were carried out, it was determined that the pH improved by 5.30%, EC by 3.03%, DO by 29.3% and FCL by 43.71%, so that the gold nanoparticles dissolved in the aqueous solution of titanium dioxide with greywater positively influenced the improvement of the photocatalytic action of titanium dioxide in the physical-chemical parameters of greywater.

Opis:
The paper has analyzed the presence of antibiotics in crude (hospital, medicine production and municipal) waste water, treated waste water, surface water and drinking water across the world. The concentrations of antibiotics in medicine production waste water reached a level of up to 900 µ/dm3; in hospital waste water, up to 124 µ/dm3; and in municipal waste water, up to 64 µ/dm3. Antibiotic concentrations in treated waste water approached 260 ng/dm3. The presence of antibiotics in surface water has also been covered. The most often identified medicines were: Ciprofloxacin, Erythromycin, Norfloxacin, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. The maximum antibiotic concentrations in surface water are as high as up to 2 µg/dm3. In the majority of cases, identified antibiotics occurred in concentrations from several to several dozen ng/dm3, and less often in several hundred ng/dm3. The presence of antibiotics in drinking water, similarly as for waste water, was identified worldwide, e.g. in China, USA, Germany, Canada, France. Very high antibiotic concentrations were noted in Guangzhou, China, which reached a level of up to 679.7 ng/dm3 (Ciprofloxacin), but also in the USA (Triclosan) – 734 ng/dm3). In the majority of instances, antibiotics are present in water in much lower concentrations. The consequence of environmental contamination with antibiotics is the drug resistance of many bacterial strains with the resultant deaths of 25 000 people in the European Union and 700 000 people across the globe. The other effects of the presence of antibiotics in the natural environment are not fully understood yet. For example, carcinogenic, teratogenic or mutagenic effects are attributed to these contaminants.
W pracy przeanalizowano obecność antybiotyków w ściekach surowych (szpitalnych, z produkcji leków, komunalnych), oczyszczonych, wodach powierzchniowych i wodzie pitnej na świecie. Stężenia antybiotyków analizowane w ściekach z produkcji leków dochodziły do 900 µ/dm3, w ściekach szpitalnych do 124 µ/dm3 i komunalnych do 64 µ/dm3. Stężenia antybiotyków w ściekach oczyszczonych dochodziły do 260 ng/dm3. Przedstawiono również obecność antybiotyków w wodach powierzchniowych. Najczęściej identyfikowanymi lekami były: ciprofloxacin, erytromycyna, norfloxacin, sulfamethoxazole i trimethoprim. Maksymalne stężenia antybiotyków w wodach powierzchniowych dochodzą nawet do 2 µg/dm3.

Water pollution is a matter of great concern in lentic and lotic ecosystems. Generally water pollutants like heavy metals, organic compounds, etc. generate from industries and domestic activities. All of these pose serious threat to the fish population in freshwater as well as marine water bodies. An impact caused by water pollutants especially genotoxins depend not only upon its concentration, but also on the duration (acute and chronic exposure) and showed individual and/or combination of pollutants or genotoxins. Genotoxicity of fish with special reference to micronucleus induction in the erythrocytes of fish is an easy screening of water pollution. The present review deals with past and present research works of major water pollutants discharge and their impact on several fish species from available literatures.

In terms of bacteriology and chemistry, the tap water must meet the requirements for drinking water. Water utilities (waterworks) are required to constantly monitor the quality of supplied water. Test results posted on Department of Waterworks and Sewerage in Gliwice website confirm good water quality in Gliwice. However, before the water reaches our tap, it goes through the waterworks. When old pipes are found in the housing estate we live in or we live in a house where pipes have not been changed for many years, harmful compounds may appear in the water. In addition, tap water can be characterized by high hardness. This is the most common cause of stone formation, which further significantly reduces the tap water taste. To improve the quality of tap water, consumers use tap water filtering devices or buy bottled water. This article presents a survey using a random selection technique on a selected group of 200 middle-aged residents in the city of Gliwice in June 2019. The main goal was to present residents' opinions on the need to improve tap water quality.

In Turkey, the renewable water potential per capita is rapidly decreasing in response to the increasing population. Of the 234 billion m3 renewable water potential of our country, 41 billion m3 consists of groundwater and 193 billion m3 consists of rivers. One of the measures to be taken in order to protect renewable water resources in our country, which is not rich in water, is to try to minimize the damage to ground and surface waters caused by solid and liquid wastes that occur in animal shelters. This damage occurs especially with the washing of negatively charged nitrate in the fertilizer content by factors such as precipitation and the increase in the nitrate level of water resources. For the prevention and reduction of environmental problems arising from the said polycultural enterprises; Ecological evaluation of the transition to sustainable farming methods is one of the elements of urgency for the ecological sustainability of animal husbandry. In this study; the definition, scope and briefly the principles of sustainable agricultural methods for the management of nitrate pollution, which is one of the most important parameters that cause water pollution from agricultural production, are emphasized, the reasons for the transition to sustainable agricultural methods are explained, and the necessity and applicability of closely monitoring these developments in İzmir, which has a great potential in terms of animal existence, has been discussed on a basin basis. In addition, in terms of different animal production branches, the situation of animal manure management infrastructure together with plant production has been evaluated and some suggestions have been made with innovative strategies on the basis of basin that can be an example pilot.

On the Holy Cross Mountains (southern Poland), located within the tectonic zone of the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ), numerous former quarries exist, including those of Cambrian quarzitic sandstones and sandstones with pyrite veins. This article presents the results of geochemical studies on the waters of the acidic mine pit lake Podwiśniówka (with an area of 1.5 ha and a maximum depth of 7.0 m) conducted in 2018. The tests were carried out in a vertical water column (every 1 m) in the central part of pit lake. The mean concentration of metals/metalloids, determined using inductively coupled plasma-quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-QMS), was found to form the following sequence in decreasing order: As> Cu> Ni> Co> Cr> Zn> U> Pb> Cd> Tl. With increasing depth, there was a general upwards trend in the concentrations of all the determined elements. In all cases, the average value of the single pollution index in the water column greatly exceeds the very strong level in relation to the geochemical background of surface waters globally (As – above 1250 times). The integrated pollution index for the ten trace elements in the water column increases with depth, and its average value exceeding 250 times the highest reference level. At the same time, the cluster analysis carried out showed the existence of two distinct depth zones in the pit lake: upper (0–4 m) and lower (5–7 m), differing in the scale of the water pollution.

A good water quality is essential to sustaining the life of the organisms. The determination of water quality is needed as a direction to monitoring the water pollution. The purpose of this study is to examine the quality of the water and to determine the water pollution index based on the physicochemical parameters in Mimika waters, Indonesia. The sampling of water quality was carried out in October 2016 at six stations (Moga, Puriri, Inaoga, Keakwa, Atuka and Pomako waters). Then, the results were compared with the standard of sea water quality for biota marine based on the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 51 year 2004. This study showed that the physicochemical parameters of the waters, such as water turbidity, BOD, NH3 and heavy metals (Hg, As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr), are still appropriate to the biota marine in all study stations. However, there is a parameter for which the quality standards were exceed in all locations, including water salinity for coral and seagrass, NO3, PO4 and H2S. The result of pollution index calculation at coastal waters Mimika are classified as lightly polluted (Keakwa and Pomako waters), and moderately polluted (Moga, Puriri, Inaoga and Atuka waters) with the pollution index values of 3.51 to 6.95. It is important to notice that the parameters of quality standards which had been exceed such as NO3, PO4 and H2S are the environmental parameter for nutrient elements and can trigger eutrophication in the waters.

Badania obejmowały dwa warianty nawożenia kompostem (K1 – 10 i K2 – 15 g N•m-2) oraz dwa warianty nawożenia mineralnego (NPK) z równorzędnymi dawkami azotu w postaci saletry amonowej, z uzupełnieniem PK w postaci superfosfatu i soli potasowej.
In this article there are present the results of six-year study of infiltration of nitrogen through the sand soil (loamy sand). Every year the soil was fertilized by compost (from sewage sludge) and equivalent doses of nitrogen in mineral fertilizers. Two variants of compost fertilization (K1-10 and K2-15 g N•m-2) were used. Additionally two variants of NPK with equivalent doses of nitrogen as an ammonium nitrate supplemented with PK as a superphosphate and potassium salt were applied. Systematically there were investigated the volume of all leachates and their chemical composition. With increasing doses of fertilizers the concentrations of total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen in the leachate were increased. The concentration of nitrogen in the leachate from the soil fertilized by nitrate was much greater than in compost with equivalent dose of nitrogen. Not only nitrates but also nitrogen from soluble organic compounds were rinsed from the soil. In the case of soil fertilized by compost the participation of nitrates in the total value of nitorgen in the leachate was 41-77%. However in the case of fertilization by ammonium sulphate this proportion was significantly higher and was in the range 60-95%. Over the years, a systematic soil fertilization by both ways increased the nitrogen concentrations in leachate. It shows that in the soil there is surplus of nitrogen, increasing during the time.

The present study was performed for the period of one year from January 2013 to December 2013 in order to understand the physico-chemical properties of Mahul Creek water. From the results of our study it was observed that the annual average COD level was 362.09 ppm which was far higher than the maximum tolerable level of 250 ppm set for inland surface water as well as for marine coastal water. The annual average conductivity was found to be 6122.81 μS cm-1 which was very much above the conductivity limit for inland surface water of 1000 μS cm-1 set by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for propagation of fisheries. The annual average total alkalinity level was recorded as 166.25 ppm, which according to the UN Department of Technical Cooperation for Development (1985) was found to be strongly alkaline. The annual average hardness level of the creek water was found to be 2488.65 ppm which was above the limit of 300 ppm set by ISI. From the results of the present investigation it seems that the time has come to implement proper effluent water treatment techniques and enforcement of pollution control by the regulatory authority on the indiscriminate discharge of industrial wastewater into water bodies.

Abandoned mining sites are largely responsible for the release of heavy metals into water systems. This study assessed heavy metals in the water collected from the mine sumps and bore-wells of an abandoned copper mine in Lasail, northern Oman. Other physiochemical parameters of the water were also evaluated. The waters were extremely acidic with very high electrical conductivity. Aluminium (Al), boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) were in very high concentrations, well above the limits recommended by Oman and World Health Organisation (WHO) standards. The principal component analysis (PCA) explained 93% of the variability. The impact of mining on the water quality of Lasail area is presented and remediation measures are recommended.

The processing of Mollusca for food consumption generates a large amount of by-products; for instance, shells, which may contaminate and deposit in the marine coastal environment. Therefore, additional processing is needed to reduce and transform shells into valuable materials, such as chitosan or another derivate product. This study aimed to isolate and characterize the chitosan from Solen vagina (known as lorjuk shells in Indonesian) and to determine the application of chitosan. This is to be compared with Solen vagina shell powder that commonly functions as bio-sorbent of water pollutants Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+. The isolated chitosan was characterized based on its physicochemical properties, namely purity as tested by using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and functional group as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). In addition, bio-absorbent ability was evaluated through a column method, where the chitosan products are used and compared with Solen vagina shell powders. In this study, the chitosan isolated from Solen vagina shells yielded 15.92 ± 1.78% and showed a high deacetylation degree (DD) by 85.00 ± 3.98%. FTIR and physicochemical properties analysis confirmed that the isolated chitosan is of good quality, as standardized by industry regulator; thus, it could be used as food product and bioabsorbent material. Moreover, the bio-absorbent ability of chitosan demonstrated a similar value with S. vagina shell powders, which can absorb more than 92% of heavy metals around second elution. In conclusion, the S. vagina shell powder and the isolated chitosan have the potential as natural bio-absorbent to reduce the heavy metal contents in industrial wastewater.

The paper presents the evaluation of seasonal and long-term changes in selected nutrients of three lakes of the Poznań Lakeland. The lakes were selected due to the high risk of pollution from agricultural and residential areas. Water samples were taken in 6 control points in the spring, summer and autumn, from 2004 to 2014. Trophic status of the lakes was evaluated based on the concentration of nutrients (nitrates, nitrites, ammonium, nitrogen and phosphorus) and indicators of eutrophication. Studies have shown that the concentration of nutrients varied greatly both in individual years and seasons of the analyzed decades, especially in Lakes Niepruszewskie and Pamiątkowskie. The main problem is the high concentration of nitrates. In general, it showed an upward trend until 2013, especially in the spring. This may indicate that actions restricting runoff pollution from agricultural sources have not been fully effective. On the other hand, a marked downward trend in the concentrations of NH4 over the years from 2004 to 2014, especially after 2007, indicates a gradual improvement of wastewater management. Moreover, seasonal variation in NH4 concentrations differed from those of NO3 and NO2. The highest values were reported in the autumn season, the lowest in the summer. Concentrations of nutrients and eutrophication indexes reached high values in all analysed lakes, indicating a eutrophic or hypertrophic state of the lakes. The high value of the N:P ratio indicates that the lakes had a huge surplus of nitrogen, and phosphorus is a productivity limiting factor.

The research on the physical and chemical properties of landfill leachates and migration of its hazardous components into hydrosphere and biosphere is a current problem in the global context. The object of the research is landscape-changing factors of the Lviv municipal landfill (Ukraine). It was defined that the largest part of oil products accumulates in the leachates at the south-western side of the landfill (23.6 mg/dm3) and it is 2.36 times higher than the value of the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) (10 mg/dm3); the most saline leachates with chlorides and sulfites are those accumulating at the foot and at the northwestern side; the phosphate content of the investigated leachate samples was the highest at the foot of the landfill and amounted to 12.8 mg/dm3, which exceeds the MPC (10 mg/dm3) by 1.28 times; high concentration of ammonium nitride was discovered in the leachates at the foot (76.1 mg/dm3) and at the northwestern side (46.3 mg/dm3), which exceeds the MPC (30 mg/dm3) by 2.53 and 1.54 times, respectively; the highest indicators of total iron are typical for basins nearby (at the foot – 68.2 mg/dm3, at the northwestern side – 56.3 mg/dm3) and exceed the MPC norms (2.5 mg/dm3) by 27.28 and 22.52 times, respectively. According to certain indicators, the content of hazardous components in the leachates, which accumulate at the foot and at the northwestern side, exceeds the MPC and is several times higher than in the natural basins at the distance of 800 and 1200 m.

Desaru is a popular tourist destination located on the east coast of the state of Johor. The area has been identified for further development to enhance tourism. This presents a pollution risk to its surrounding watercourses. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential risk of contamination towards rivers located in the crux of the development region, namely the Terumpah, Che Minah, Semangar, Beluntu, Penawar Besar, and Mertang Besar Rivers. Water quality and hydraulic measurements were made at these rivers, with the intention of developing a numerical model. The model results showed deterioration in BOD5 and NH3-N in the Semangar River, up to 4.0 mg/dm3 and 0.34 mg/dm3, respectively. The Beluntu River experienced the highest degradation, to about 14.0 mg/dm3 of BOD5 and 0.8 mg/dm3 of NH3-N. The waste assimilative capacity (WAC) for the Matang Besar, Che Minah and Beluntu Rivers were very limited, with a class III BOD5 limit of 15, 43, and 10 kg/day, respectively, whereas the Terumpah River is not able to accept any BOD load without breaching the same threshold.

Świadczy to o niewystarczającym zabezpieczeniu studni i przenikaniu zanieczyszczeń do wody z najbliższego jej otoczenia.
The aim of the research was to analyze the quality and utility value of water in a dug well located in the farmstead in the Wydminskie Lake catchment. The analysis of chemical indicators of water in a backyard well located on the rural area was conducted from June 2016 to May 2018 in a farmstead in Sucholaski (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship). It is a dug well with a depth of 3.75 m. Once it was used as a drinking water intake, now it is an additional source of water used for the needs of the farm. The research carried out showed in the water drawn from the well there are high concentrations of mineral pollutions, among which dominated, nitrates(V) and potassium ions. Poor water quality is also confirmed by indicators determining the total amount of chemical components contained in water e.g.: electrolytic conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids (TDS). This indicates insufficient protection of the well and penetration of pollution to water from the environment. In the past, the well was a source of drinking water, however, due to high concentrations of chemical pollution, currently the water drawn from this intake is not recommended for consumption. In addition, long-term irrigation of soil and plants with the analyzed water may worsen soil conditions and decrease crop yield potential. This is mainly due to very high concentrations of potassium ions.

Opis:
A new approach for sites prioritization and designing measures on land drainage was developed and tested on the 96.5 km2 Žejbro catchment (Czech Republic). The aim was to design an effective, mutually interconnected system of measures, on tiles, manholes, outlets as well as on ditches (s.c. main drainage facilities, MDF) that will increase water retention and storage in intensively farmed and tile-drained catchments and will reduce water pollution from subsurface non-point sources (drainage runoff). This approach consists of (I) selecting suitable sites using the Catchment Measures Need Index (CAMNI) method; (II) obtaining information on land drainage in the area of interest; (III) conducting a field survey and water quality monitoring; (IV) designing appropriate systems of measures; and (V) analysing the estimated costs of the proposed measures. Measures were proposed for fourteen sub-catchments that were selected based on the results of a CAMNI analysis and whether an MDF or a heavily modified stream is present. A total of 44 point measures, 62 areal measures, and 99 line measures were proposed. Implementation of these measures would reduce the load of N-NO3, a major pollutant from drainage runoff, by 44 tons per year (48%). From the financial point of view, these measures are not self-financing and the benefits do not cover the expected costs of their implementation and maintenance. However, these measures have a profound ecological and societal benefits which, when taken into account, make these measures suitable for implementation when (co-)financed from public budgets. Putting the presented approach into practice, for example, in the framework of complex land consolidations or by watershed management authorities, could significantly improve the condition and water regime of intensively drained agricultural landscapes.

Opis:
The measurements of chemical components in water of Wieprza River showed that water of this river in 2002-2003 was characterised by the high purity. The average values of most indexes were contained in the ranges of standards for the first purity class. Nevertheless considerable increase of investigation parameters was observed in zone of sewage-treatment plant and uncontrolled waste dump. The part of flow downing pollutions were absorbed by peat soils. Kępice town bring into Wieprza River the load of organic matter miscalculating to BOD5 average 133 kg O2 d-1 (85 t O2 y-1), the load of nitrogen 140 kg N d-1 (51 t N y-1) and phosphorus 18 kg P d-1 (6.2 t P y-1). However Wieprza River shows high self-purification ability. The level of investigation components in this river (4 km outside of the Kępice town) returned to the level which was 2 km before the town.

During analysis of the possibility of contamination of surface waters with petroleum compounds the type and condition of land including its susceptibility to erosion caused by surface run-off, pollution, precipitation, type of roads, squares, parks, etc., the type and intensity of traffic should be taken into account. The concentration of pollutants of surface runoff is also influenced by rainfall: the frequency and method of cleaning the catchment area (roads, squares), method of deicing, works in the catchment area, the characteristics of the precipitation phenomenon (intensity, duration, length of intervals between rain), time of year. Subject of this work was to define the concentration of oil derivative substances in the river Suprasl water, which is main potable water supply source in Bialystok agglomeration. The river catchment is covered by indirect protec-tion zone, which is cut by many traffic routes. Transit location of the province caused road and rail transport intensification, which increased the risk of water environment pollution with oil derivatives. On the catchment area 10 measuring points in the case of surface water and 2 for underground water were selected for investigations. Sampling points were selected in order to determine the pollution discharged from the catchment area and roads. In researched water oil derivative substances were determined using reference method, total content of extractable organic substances, COD-Mn, suspension and pH. The results of conducted research was content of the oil derivative substances and extractable organic substances in analyzed water samples, also high concentration of easily decomposable substances. Content of oil derivative substances signals that research should be continued and also the condition of its migration should be recognized.

Opis:
Oceniono toksyczność i genotoksyczność próbek wody z Wisły pobranych w 6 wybranych punktach Warszawy za pomocą testu bioindykacyjnego z wykorzystaniem cebuli Allium cepa. Genotoksyczność (zwiększenie częstości występowania aberracji chromosomowych w komórkach korzeni) stwierdzono jedynie w przypadku wody pobranej w punkcie 3-MP Most Poniatowskiego, co sugeruje możliwość miejscowego wprowadzania do rzeki wraz z wodami opadowymi i roztopowymi substancji genotoksycznych.
The toxicity and genotoxicity of Vistula river water samples, collected from six selected points in Warsaw downstream from Gruba Kaśka, were assessed using the Allium cepa bioassay. The research was conducted in 2011 and in 2013, which was before and after the completion of the municipal wastewater transporting system from the left-bank Warsaw to Czajka treatment plant. The results indicate a significant improvement of the Vistula waters state in 2013. No toxicity (root growth inhibition) or mitotic index decrease was observed in water samples taken from any of the research points. Genotoxicity (increased frequency of chromosomal aberrations AAT) was detected only in water sample from one point: 3-MP (Most Poniatowskiego) - in the city center. There is the possibility of local discharging of genotoxic substances in detectable amounts into Vistula river. Cadmium, lead or organic pollutants, connected with heavy car traffic, may probably be transported with rain and melt-waters and cause the contamination. In 2011, before the completion of the municipal wastewater transporting system, no toxicity or genotoxicity was noted for the water sample collected at the city water-intake facility 1-GK (Gruba Kaśka), but downstream of this point, toxicity and genotoxicity increased for the water samples from point 2-PS (Pomnik Sapera) and from 3-MP (Most Poniatowskiego), before disappearing in water samples from 4-MG (Most Grota-Roweckiego) in the north of the city. The highest toxicity and genotoxicity was observed for the water sample collected at point 5-KB (Kolektor Burakowski). The Burakowski collector was discharging untreated municipal sewage from left-bank Warsaw (central and northern parts) directly into the Vistula in 2011. No significant toxicity or genotoxicity of the Vistula river waters were observed in point 6-OC (Oczyszczalnia Czajka) situated only about 8 km downstream.

Opis:
Action which are taken in order to retent water should be considered in connection with its quality and with realization of tasks in order to improve level of water purity One of the aims of small retention is to lengthen the distance of pollution circulation. The accumulation of flowing water andbuilding of water reservoir influences importantly on chemical, biochemical and biological processes in water. As a result of accumulation of water- the surface of water, its depth and the time of flowing are increasing and the flowing speed is decreasing. Decrease of content of organic pollution in a water reservoir is usually bigger than at the same river segment before the accumulation of water. In the water of reservoir takes place increased sediment of suspensions and the period of organic pollution degradatio is increasing. Obviously, it can improve water quality, but it only deals with clean waters. If we talk of polluted waters, accumulation of water mainly declines water quality. Changes of water quality in reservoirs are conditioned remarkably by local situation and they are multidirectional. The quality of water flowing into the reservoir has basic meaning. Flowing of polluted water into the reservoir may cause the appearing of many disadvantageous processes causing the decline of water quality. The subject of this study work is the analysis of reasons and effects of water pollution level in the reservoirs of low- retention and their influxes in the area of Podlasie district by taking into the consideration the presence of selected physico - chemical pollutions. Analysis of water were held from december 2008 to december 2009 in two selected objects located in Podlasie region. They are two low- retention reservoirs: in Sokółka and in Czarna Białostocka.

Opis:
Integrated laboratory system consisted of three stages - activated sludge reactor, biofilter and subsurface vertical flow wetland was used to treat two types of wastewaters differed in their generation and pollution. Wastewaters from a pig farm as well as from a landfill site for domestic wastes were used in the experiments. The BOD/COD ratio of the wastewaters from a pig farm and from the landfill leachate was 0.5 and 0.07, respectively. In the first stage of the integrated system was achieved COD removal (48 % for the piggery wastewater for 3 days and 62.3 % for the landfill leachate after 4 days). BOD removal (55.6 %) for the piggery wastewater was achieved in 3 days and 24.9 % - for the landfill leachate after 4 days. The decreasing of organics at aerobic conditions was accompanied with the ammonium ions decreasing - 1.5 times for the piggery wastewater and 4 times for the leachate. In the second stage - biofilter without aeration, an additional organic loading decreasing was achieved. The COD decreased from 820.9 mg/dm3 to 274.3 mg/dm3 for piggery wastewater and for the leachate - from 869.5 mg/dm3 to 423.6 mg/dm3. The BOD values decreased from 384.1 mg/dm3 to 106.8 mg/dm3 for the piggery wastewater and for leachate - from 117.8 mg/dm3 to 57.4 mg/dm3. The ammonium ions were eliminated from both types of wastewaters. In the third stage (subsurface vertical flow wetland) the emission standards for discharge into the sewage collection systems or into the water bodies are met.
