Opis:
Copernicus Programme managed by the European Commission and implemented in partnership with i.a. the European Space Agency (ESA) provides free access to satellite data from Sentinel mission including Sentinel-2 high resolution optical satellite data. The aim of the research was to recognize opportunities of water detection on Sentinel-2 imagery. Satellite data was analyzed before and after atmospheric correction. A number of tests were carried out using indices selected from the literature. Based on the gained experience, a new index for water detection has been proposed, Sentinel Water Mask (SWM), specially adapted for Sentinel-2 images. Its construction is based on the highest difference between spectral values of water surface and other land cover forms. SWM provides quick and effective detection of water which is especially important in flood assessment for crisis management. Research was performed on unprocessed images of Sentinel-2 Level-1C and images after atmospheric correction (Level-2A). Water was detected with the use of threshold values determined by the visual interpretation method. The accuracy of the obtained water masks was assessed on the basis of validation points. The performed analysis allowed to indicate indices, which enable estimation of areas covered by water on Sentinel-2 images with high classification accuracy, this is: AWEInsh (Automated Water Extraction Index), MNDWI (Modified Normalized Difference Water Index), NDWIMcFeeters (Normalized Difference Water Index). Their application allowed for achievement of overall accuracy of water detection oscillating around 95% and high Kappa coefficient. The usage of the proposed SWM index leads to slightly better results (more than 96%). The sensitivity to the selection of threshold values of analyzed indices was assessed and then the optimal threshold ranges were determined. The optimal threshold value for NDWIMcFeeters should be included in the value range (0.1, 0.2), for MNDWI (0.2, 0.3) and for SWM (1.4, 1.6). The unambiguous threshold range for AWEInsh index was impossible to indicate due to the large range of values.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the traceability of damage growth caused by inclusions of water in the composite sandwich structure. It was assumed that as a result of temperature changes during the flight and accompanying phase transformation, the zone containing water inclusions increases. The growth is caused by the destruction (mainly the tearing of walls) of the core. As part of the work, this assumption was verified experimentally. For the experiment to be successful it was necessary to simulate actual flight conditions. The simulation involved inducing phase transformations of water in the core cell as a function of time and temperature. Before and after the experiments the non-destructive tests using pulsed thermography were performed. The test results revealed an increase in the number of cells occupied by water. Adequate specimens were designed and manufactured. The study showed that cyclical changes in temperature affected the propagation of water in core sandwich structures. Further, it was found that the increase in the surface area of water-containing inclusions could be monitored using thermographic techniques.

Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA), an example of machine learning, can be considered a non-linear extension of the PCA method. While various applications of KPCA are known, this paper explores the possibility to use it for building a data-driven model of a non-linear system-the water distribution system of the Chojnice town (Poland). This model is utilised for fault detection with the emphasis on water leakage detection. A systematic description of the system's framework is followed by evaluation of its performance. Simulations prove that the presented approach is both flexible and efficient.

In the article the neural networks used for failures location for water supply networks are presented. To do this a hydraulic model of the water net, as well as an appropriate developed monitoring system have to be used. The current applications of monitoring systems installed in the waterworks do not realize their possibilities. The monitoring systems provided as autonomic programs to collect and record the information about flows and pressures of water in source pumping stations, in the pump stations bringing up the water pressure inside the water net and in the pipes of water supply network give a general knowledge about state of its work, but if they would be used as elements of IT systems supporting the water network management, they could help to solve the tasks concerning detection and localization of water leaks. The models of failures location in water nets described in the paper are created by means of neural networks in the form of MLP nets.

Water pollution is a matter of great concern in lentic and lotic ecosystems. Generally water pollutants like heavy metals, organic compounds, etc. generate from industries and domestic activities. All of these pose serious threat to the fish population in freshwater as well as marine water bodies. An impact caused by water pollutants especially genotoxins depend not only upon its concentration, but also on the duration (acute and chronic exposure) and showed individual and/or combination of pollutants or genotoxins. Genotoxicity of fish with special reference to micronucleus induction in the erythrocytes of fish is an easy screening of water pollution. The present review deals with past and present research works of major water pollutants discharge and their impact on several fish species from available literatures.

The coliform group has been used extensively as an indicator of water quality and has historically led to the public health protection concept. Total coliforms are a group of bacteria commonly found in the environment, for example in soil or vegetation, as well as the intestines of mammals, including humans. Total coliform bacteria are not likely to cause illness, but their presence indicates that the water supply may be vulnerable to contamination by more harmful microorganisms. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the only member of the total coliform group of bacteria that is found only in the intestines of mammals, including humans. The presence of E. coli in water indicates recent fecal contamination and may indicate the possible presence of disease-causing pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Although most strains of E. coli bacteria are harmless, certain strains, such as E.coli 0157:H7, may cause illness. About 80 % of communicable diseases in the world are waterborne. According to WHO estimate about 80 % of water pollution in developing country, like India is carried by domestic waste. In India 70 % of the water is seriously polluted and 75 % of illness and 80 % of the child mortality is attributed to water pollution. The improper management of water systems may cause serious problems in availability and quality of water. The major pathogenic bacteria responsible for water borne disease are spread by the faeco-oral route, in which water may play an intermediate role. The aim of this review is to examine methods currently in use for the detection of coliforms in drinking water and also to evaluate the possible health hazards associated with drinking water contaminated with coliforms.

Opis:
The paper presents fundamentals of a simple physicochemical method (SPMD) and analysis of results obtained when the method was applied for detection of organic contaminations (surface-active substances SAS) in samples of environmental and industrial waters. The method is based on measurements of variations of air bubble local velocities, which can be significantly changed in presence of surface-active contaminants. Lowering of the bubble velocity is a consequence of a motion induced dynamic adsorption layer (DAL) formed over surface of the rising bubble. The DAL formation retards the surface fluidity and the bubble rising velocity can be lowered by over 50% when the bubble surface is completely immobilized. We showed that the SPMD is a very sensitive tool (detection limit even below 1 ppm) for detection of various kinds of surface-active substances (ionic, non-ionic) in water samples. On the basis of results obtained using precise laboratory set-up, an accuracy of the SPMD is discussed. Moreover, effect of inert electrolyte addition on the bubble velocity lowering and value of detection limit of the SPMD is discussed. Simple approach, enabling quantitative analysis of the surface-active contaminants in samples collected, based on “equivalent concentrations” determination, is proposed. Results obtained for industrial (Jankowice and Knurow coal processing plants, Jaslo Refinery channel) and environmental waters (Wisloka and Ropa river) are used for detailed analysis and critical discussion of advantages and limitations of the SPMD.

The distribution of noroviruses is worldwide. In industrialized countries, noroviruses are the most common viral cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks and play an important role in sporadic gastroenteritis as well. Transmission may occur through the ingestion of contaminated foods or water, through person-to-person contact, or by way of direct contact with contaminated surfaces. Of particular importance is their ability to cause waterborne outbreaks linked either to the direct consumption of water or to its recreational uses. This article reviews the clinical manifestations and epidemiology of norovirus infection, and describes over 40 waterborne norovirus outbreaks, their respective probable sources of contamination and - where water samples were tested - the genetic types identified.

The subject of this study was the occurrence of Phytophthora spp. in a river, canal and water reservoir in forest nursery and the pathogenicity of 4 isolates of this genus to alder tree and rhododendron. Seven species of Phytophthora and the Salixsoil taxon were found in 3 water sources. There were 5 species in the river, including P. cinnamomi and the taxon Salixsoil, 5 species in the canal and 4 in the pond including P. cambivora not noted in other water sources. Less species were noted in the first and fourth quarter of a year but P. cambivora was always isolated. All isolates of P. citricola and P. citrophthora colonized alder leaves irrespective of water source and period of detection. From among 3 species used to inoculate rhododendron leaves, P. cinnamomi appeared the significantly fastest colonizer.

Phytophthora plurivora was the most often detected species from water using rhododendron baits. The species was isolated from water of two rivers, Jasieniec and Korabiewka, a water pond and a drainage canal from March to November, 2008 (in Korabiewka river also in December). The highest population density of P. plurivora was observed in March and April in water pond and canal, and in May in both analysed rivers. In laboratory trials all tested isolates colonized rhododendron and poplar leaves. Isolates from drainage canal were the most pathogenic for rhododendron. Isolates detected in March from water pond and two rivers caused the quickest spread of necrosis on leaf blades. On poplar leaves the fastest development of necrotic spots was observed when isolates obtained in June and November were used for inoculation, while the isolate from September sample was less pathogenic.
Największą liczbę izolatów uzyskano w marcu i kwietniu z kanału i zbiornika, a w maju z obu rzek. W warunkach laboratoryjnych wszystkie testowane kultury kolonizowały blaszki liściowe różanecznika i topoli. Najszybsze tempo zasiedlania tkanek liści topoli obserwowano po inokulacji kulturami uzyskanymi z prób z lipca i listopada, a najwolniejsze w przypadku izolatu z września.

The objective of the study was to compare the usefulness of FLOTAC and centrifugal fecal flotation (CFF) techniques. More specifically, the taxonomic classes (Nematoda and Cestoda) of endoparasites present in fecal samples of buffaloes are identified, the sensitivity and specificity of FLOTAC relative to CFF are calculated, and the agreement of both techniques is evaluated using Kappa statistics. Fresh fecal samples from 220 buffaloes in 10 municipalities were collected. Sheather’s sugar was used as a flotation solution for both the FLOTAC and CFF techniques. Of the 220 animals, 109 samples were nematode positive and 111 samples were nematode negative according to the FLOTAC technique, while 74 were found to be positive and 146 negative according to the CFF technique. No cestodes were detected by either technique. The calculated sensitivity for FLOTAC is 89.19% and its specificity is 70.55%. Kappa statistics revealed moderate agreement (k=0.535) between the two techniques in detecting nematodes. The prevalence observed based on FLOTAC and CFF test were 49.54% (109/220; 95% CI: 47.75–56.34) and 33.64% (72/220; 95% CI: 27.42–40.3), respectively.

This paper considers the problem of small leakage detection in urban water supply networks. In order to detect leakage, the model-based fault diagnosis scheme was used. Nonlinear autoregressive exogenous models were applied to residual generation. A nonlinear part of the model was worked out with use of a multilayer perceptron neural network. Residual evaluation was realised basing on the model error modelling method. This method was modified to obtain a new scheme for adaptive threshold generation. In the case study reported in this paper the authors present the fault detection experiments with use of the industrial data set. The obtained results of small leakage detection in the considered water supply network confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The paper is organized as follows. The first section deals with the introduction to the study. The second one includes a description of the proposed method. In the next section there are presented the results that were obtained by the authors. Finally, the paper ends with the conclusions.
