Opis:
Dam construction is one of the measures that is inevitable in many cases and must be done to supply drinking water, agricultural uses and electricity generation. There are many challenges to a successful dam project, and the managers of each project must consider the appropriate solutions for them. One of the studies that is done in dam design is sedimentation in dam reservoirs. The experimental area-reduction method is a very common technique that obtains the sediment distribution in depth and longitudinal profile. This technique shows that sediment accumulation is not limited to the bottom reservoirs. Sediment accumulation in a reservoir is usually distributed below the top of the protection reservoir or normal water level. In this study, the distribution of sediment in the reservoir of Karun Dam after a period of 65 years has been done using the experimental area-reduction method. Elevation-volume and elevation-area curves of the dam reservoir are obtained after the useful life of the dam and sediment deposition. The results showed that after 65 years, 106.47·106 m3 of sediment is deposited in the reservoir of the dam and the useful volume of the reservoir is significantly reduced. Also, up to a height of 36.4 m, the dam reservoir is filled with sediment. Therefore, no valve should be placed up to this height.

Opis:
It has been discovered that the shallow water model based on approximate Riemann solvers can produce unrealistic flows in the case of uneven topography and inaccurate solutions of discharge near hydraulic jumps. To overcome these deficiencies, we proposed a new approach to implement the HLL Riemann solver for open channel flows, including: (1) adopting a form of Saint Venant equations which have only one source term representing driving forces; (2) defining discharge at interface and evaluating it according to the flux obtained by the HLL Riemann solver. In this paper, the performance of this new method is evaluated by means of dam-break flows over a channel with triangular cross-section and a natural river valley with complex topography, respectively. Comparisons of computed results with analytic solutions and data measured from the physical model show that the proposed method is capable of satisfactorily reproducing dam-break flows over complex topography.

Opis:
Numerical studies on detonation wave propagation in rotating detonation engine and its propulsive performance with one- and multi-step chemistries of a hydrogen-based mixture are presented. The computational codes were developed based on the three-dimensional Euler equations coupled with source terms that incorporate high-temperature chemical reactions. The governing equations were discretized using Roe scheme-based finite volume method for spatial terms and second-order Runge-Kutta method for temporal terms. One-dimensional detonation simulations with one- and multi-step chemistries of a hydrogen-air mixture were performed to verify the computational codes and chemical mechanisms. In two-dimensional simulations, detonation waves rotating in a rectangular chamber were investigated to understand its flowfield characteristics, where the detailed flowfield structure observed in the experiments was successfully captured. Three-dimensional simulations of two-waved rotating detonation engine with an annular chamber were performed to evaluate its propulsive performance in the form of thrust and specific impulse. It was shown that rotating detonation engine produced constant thrust after the flowfield in the chamber was stabilized, which is a major difference from pulse detonation engine that generates repetitive and intermittent thrust.
W celu weryfikacji kodów obliczeniowych i mechanizmów chemicznych przeprowadzono jednowymiarowe symulacje detonacji z jedno- i wieloetapowymi chemikaliami mieszaniny wodoru i powietrza. W symulacjach dwuwymiarowych badano fale detonacyjne obracające się w komorze prostokątnej w celu zrozumienia jej charakterystyki pola przepływu, gdzie udało się uchwycić szczegółową strukturę pola przepływu zaobserwowaną w doświadczeniach. Przeprowadzono trójwymiarowe symulacje dwufalowego wirującego silnika detonacyjnego z komorą pierścieniową w celu oceny jego właściwości pędnych w postaci ciągu i impulsu właściwego.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to build and validate a class of energy-preserving schemes for simulating a complex modified Korteweg–de Vries equation. The method is based on a combination of a discrete variational derivative method in time and finite volume element approximation in space. The resulting scheme is accurate, robust and energy-preserving. In addition, for comparison, we also develop a momentum-preserving finite volume element scheme and an implicit midpoint finite volume element scheme. Finally, a complete numerical study is developed to investigate the accuracy, conservation properties and long time behaviors of the energy-preserving scheme, in comparison with the momentum-preserving scheme and the implicit midpoint scheme, for the complex modified Korteweg–de Vries equation.

At our department, we deal with continuous tuning of torsional oscillating mechanical systems (TOMS) during their operation in terms of torsional oscillation size. Therefore, a new mobile mechanical system was built for purposes of research and presentation of the TOMS continuous tuning using extremal control method, which main advantage is that we do not need to know a mathematical model of the mechanical system. The new mobile device is equipped with a special compressed air distribution system, which important components are air springs. The air springs are modified and used as air pressure tanks with various functions in the mobile device. Therefore, it is important to know the magnitude of the air springs inner volume. This paper deals with determination of air springs volume using indirect method, which is based on the air pressure measurement and also the comparison of obtained results with the results computed from air springs manufacturer data.

Opis:
As it is commonly known, to obtain a good quality Ménard Pressuremeter Test a perfectly drilled borehole (pocket) is required. It should be of proper size, only slightly greater than the diameter of the pressuremeter probe, and its walls should remain undisturbed. Unsatisfactory shapes of pressuremeter curves result usually from a poor quality drilling. Typical examples of such curves are given in all handbooks dealing with pressuremeters. They correspond to situations when the tested cavity is too large, too mall or its walls are collapsed. There is, however, plenty of room between the pressure and volume axes. An infinite number of various curves can run through this field and only one of them is really the proper one. An interpreter should be able to evaluate the quality of any curve obtained, estimate the source, the direction and the approximate scale of error and finally to draw conclusions on how to improve the drilling technique to avoid or minimize any future errors. To be able to do that, one needs to understand how the perfect curve should look. The present paper is a study on shapes of pressuremeter curves based on the author's 25years' experience.

This paper deals with the numerical simulation of a turbulent flow around two-dimensional bodies by the finite volume method with non-orthogonal body-fitted grid. The governing equations are expressed in Cartesian velocity components and solution is carried out using the SIMPLE algorithm for collocated arrangement of scalar and vector variables. Turbulence is modeled by the turbulence model and wall functions are used to bridge the solution variables at the near wall cells and the corresponding quantities on the wall. A simplified pressure correction equation is derived and proper under-relaxation factors are used so that computational cost is reduced without adversely affecting the convergence rate. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing the computed pressure distribution on the surface of NACA 0012 and NACA 4412 hydrofoils for different angles of attack with experimental data. The grid dependency of the solution is studied by varying the number of cells of the C-type structured mesh. The computed lift coefficients of NACA 4412 hydrofoil at different angles of attack are also compared with experimental results to further substantiate the validity of the proposed methodology.

Various methods for steady-state and transient analysis of temperature distribution and efficiency of continuous-plate fins are presented. For a constant heat transfer coefficient over the fin surface, the plate fin can be divided into imaginary rectangular or hexangular fins. At first approximate methods for determining the steady-state fin efficiency like the method of equivalent circular fin and the sector method are discussed. When the fin geometry is complex, thus transient temperature distribution and fin efficiency can be determined using numerical methods. A numerical method for transient analysis of fins with complex geometry is developed. Transient temperature distributions in continuous fins attached to oval tubes is computed using the finite volume - finite element methods. The developed method can be used in the transient analysis of compact heat exchangers to calculate correctly the heat flow rate transferred from the finned tubes to the fluid.

The results have been obtained using the finite volume method for transient state of superheater. The calculation was carried out for the section of pipe made of low-alloy steel.

Averaging methods such as arithmetic mean, geometric mean, upstream weighting, and integrated mean are taken into account, as well as a recent approach based on steady-state approximation. The latter method proved the most flexible, producing relatively accurate solutions for both downward and upward flow cases.

Double-porosity soils consist of two interacting porous systems corresponding to weakly conductive aggregates and highly conductive inter-aggregate regions. The flow of water in such media can be described with a two-scale model obtained by homogenization. The model consists of a single macroscopic equation for the flow in the highly conductive porous system coupled with a number of micro-scale equations for the flow in the weakly conductive aggregates. In this paper we present a numerical algorithm to solve the resulting system of equations for the case of macroscopically two-dimensional flow. It is based on the finite volume approach for unstructured grid of triangular cells. Special attention is paid to the coupling of the micro- and macro-scale equations. An exemplary calculation is presented, concerning infiltration and redistribution of water in a hill-slope of double-porosity structure with cubic aggregates.

One explicit and three implicit finite volume method schemes of the Roe type are presented in the paper. The properties and applicability of these methods for modelling unsteady, rapidly varied, open channel flow are investigated. The schemes are used for numerical simulation of one-dimensional extreme flow described by de Saint-Venant equations. The computational results are compared with each other and an analytical (exact) solution to an idealized dam-break problem. The classical versions of general scheme implicit in time - fully implicit and trapezoidal scheme - are not restricted by a stability condition, like an explicit one, however they add some numerical diffusion and dispersion errors to the solution. The modification of parameter , originally proposed for a box scheme of finite difference method, has improved computational properties of the general one-step implicit scheme. This version of finite volume scheme of the Roe type implicit in time can be recommended for modelling and simulation of transient flows in storm sewers and open channel networks.

Two numerical simulations of extreme (flash) flood propagation in an urban area are presented. The simulations are performed to recognize some specific features of flow in a built-up area. As the mathematical model of free surface unsteady water flow the shallow water equations are assumed. In order to solve the equations, a numerical scheme based on finite volume method is applied. For approximation of mass and momentum fluxes the Roe method is used. The calculations are examined against the experimental data. The measured variations of water depth at some control points of flooded area are available due to physical modelling. The experiments of model city flooding events were carried out at the hydraulic laboratory of ENEL-CESI in Milan (Italy) in a framework of EC IMPACT project. The aim of these experiments was to simulate a flood in the area where a building group representing a simplified city configuration was introduced.
