Andrzej Wajda’s films are interesting and serious historical narratives, which enter in dialog both with academic historiography and with other forms of familiarization with the past. Some of Wajda’s historical films are part of the paradigm of the affirmative vision of history. It is a vision that focuses on creating the positive picture of the bygone world, on showing those elements of the past that a given community recognizes as glorious and heroic, worth imitating, commemorating, and honoring, which can be the object of pride or even worship. The affirma-tive vision of history belittles, leaves in the background or omits all those themes from the past that fall outside positive evaluation for various reasons and could distort a consistent favorable picture of the past of a community. In the present article I would like to examine from the comparative perspective of two films, “A Generation [ Pokolenie]” (1954) and “Katyń” (2007). The comparison between Andrzej Wajda’s two films made in the space of fifty years shows that despite the fact that the two pictures were produced in entirely different historico‑cultural contexts, using different film styles, the two screen stories present the affirmation of diametri-cally disparate versions of history, it is the dramatic strategies for and techniques of affirmation of history that remain the same in either case.

This article investigates a research method of the so-called Vienna School of Art History, mainly its transformation by Max Dvořák around the First World War. The article suggests the possible influence of Georg Simmel’s philosophy on Dvořák in this time, evident mainly in Dvořák’s interpretation of Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s art, written by Dvořák in 1920 and published posthumously in 1921. This another view on the Vienna School of Art History is then researched in writings on Pieter Bruegel the Elder by Dvořák’s students Hans Sedlmayr and Charles de Tolnay when Tolnay extended Dvořák’s thinking and Sedlmayr challenged its premises – both Tolnay and Sedlmayr thus in the same time interpreted Bruegel’s art differently, even though they were both Dvořák’s students. The article then suggests a possible interpretative relationship of the Vienna School of Art History after its transformation by Max Dvořák with today’s approaches to art (history), mainly with the so-called visual studies.

The author’s twenty-year experience in illustrating the multi-volume historical publishing project “Encyclopedia of History of Ukraine”, which is coordinated by the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the “Naukova Dumka” publishing house, is highlighted. The initial stage of the work at the threshold of the millennium and its features are described in detail. The author’s focus is on the process of identifying various types of illustrative (iconographic) materials in archives, museums and libraries and related difficulties; creation of a database of illustrations; cooperation of the illustrator with the publishing house. Methodological problems that arose during the illustration (in particular, related to the publication of visual sources and verification of visual sources) are analyzed. The author emphasizes that the work of an illustrator of a historical encyclopedia, although it looks easy, is actually difficult, responsible and requires a number of professional, technical, and communication skills.

This study aims to prepare the most effective Korean history education plan for children from mixed marriages in Korea using a questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews. Before the survey, the children from mixed marriages between Korea and Vietnam, China, and Japan preferred the auto-visual teaching method (ATM). However, after learning Cramming Teaching Method (CTM), Audio-Visual Teaching Method (ATM), Comparative-History Teaching Method (CHTM), and Discussion Teaching Method (DTM) for one week, Chinese and Korean – Japanese children preferred CHTM, whereas Korean-Vietnamese children preferred ATM itself. Hence, CHTM was found to be the most effective method when educating Korean history to the children from mixed marriages between Korea and countries with many historical conflicts, similar to that of their mothers (first-generation immigrants).

Having a reputation as a painter of historical subjects, Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) is particularly recognized for his illustrations of the early twentieth-century African-American migration. His best known series of paintings, The Migration of the Negro (1941), challenges earlier interpretations of Black Americans’ journeys to the North and their everyday lives in the cities. The article explores Lawrence’s visual narratives together with the accompanying textual elements and the ways they present the social, political and cultural implications of the largest ever movement of African-American people across the country. It also considers the series from the perspective of form with a view to reconfiguring the relation between words and images.

Opisano historię fotografii w kontekście rozwoju nowych metod badawczych w nauce. Zaprezentowano ideę fotografii dokumentalnej. Przedstawiono zasady komunikacji fotograficznej, psychologiczne i filozoficzne czynniki skłaniające ludzi do uwieczniania rzeczywistości, w której żyją.
The article focuses on presenting the most important scientific, social and cultural ideas emphasizing the significance of images, especially photographs, in human life, as well as their specificity. The meaning of a photograph as a document, work of art, and scientific research material was presented. The matter of visual document message strength was addressed, including photographs, as well as the manner of organizing them and the fact that photography records reality in an extremely detailed way, the history of photography was described in the context of the development of new research methods in science. The idea of documentary photography was presented, as well as the principles of photographic communication, psychological and philosophic factors making people record the reality they live in.

The aim of the project is a study on the image of Poland in the French history-geography textbooks within secondary schools, edited by three reputable publishing houses: Nathan, Hachette and Hatier. The principle of free selection of the education content in frames of the teaching program puts emphasis on the teacher’s role in the didactic process, while the textbooks are only a teaching aid containing numerous source materials. The textbook analysis shows that the image of Poland is not much present and sometimes depicted unconscientiously and unilateral.
Celem przedstawionego projektu jest zbadanie wizerunku Polski we francuskich podręcznikach do liceum do przedmiotu historia-geografia wydanych przez trzy renomowane wydawnictwa: Nathan, Hachette i Hatier. Zasada swobody doboru treści nauczania w ramach programu kładzie nacisk na rolę nauczyciela w procesie kształcenia, a podręczniki są jedynie pomocą dydaktyczną zawierającą liczne materiały źródłowe. Analiza podręczników wykazuje, że wizerunek Polski jest zdecydowanie mało obecny, a niekiedy przedstawiony nierzetelnie i jednostronnie.

Historia wizualna to subdyscyplina historii zajmująca się badaniem przedstawień (audio)wizualnych związanych z przeszłością, o charakterze artystycznym (malarstwo, fotografia, film i in.). Historia wizualna wychodzi z założenia, że obserwowany współcześnie wzrost znaczenia form wizualnych zmusza naukę historyczną do reorientacji. Wskazuje więc na potrzebę wykorzystywania jako źródeł także fotografii czy filmu. Interesuje się też edukacją historyczną i wykorzystaniem wiedzy historycznej w celach popularyzatorskich bądź hobbistycznych, za pomocą środków audiowizualnych. Reorientacja ta inicjuje refleksję zmierzającą do wypracowania teoretycznych i praktycznych rozwiązań.
In the course of its development historiography has faced all kinds of challenges typical of a given stage in the development of civilisation. Visual representations come into the category of such challenges. An incresingly acknowledged subdiscipline of history, visual history sets itself the task of studying all kinds of audiovisual representations of the past, including the artistic ones such as film, photography and art. It is informed by the assumption that the increasing role of audiovisual ways of representing reality, including the past reality, makes it necessary for historiography to modify the fundamental presuppositions on which it is based, without, however, abandoning the traditional goals it is called upon to pursue. Visual history insists on the use of film or photographs as historical sources. This in turn requires the elaboration of specific methods of dealing with such sources, which are so significantly different from those usually made use of by historians. The discipline in question also takes an interest in the use of audiovisual means in historical education and in the popularisation of historical knowledge. History’s shift in the direction of audiovisual media inspires methodological discussions that contribute to the elaboration of both practical and theoretical solutions to a variety of problems this shift creates.

The article is devoted to the coverage of the problem of bricolage as a method of memory reconstruction in the novel “Austerlitz” by the greatest German writer Winfried Sebald. The article notes that “Austerlitz” marks the transition from trauma to conscious identity as part of the historical memory of the Holocaust. It shows how the hero of the work, Jacques Austerlitz, acquires his identity by assembling from scattered information his personal history, reflecting a significant part of the collective tragedy. The genre feature of the work as a travelogue, memoir, investigation, as literature bordering on documentary and artistic experience, where the real is combined with the fictional, is highlighted. The article describes in detail the content of the technique of bricolage as a form of “wild”, “pre-rational” way of thinking, as a technique of fitting auxiliary materials (old photographs, newspaper clippings), a montage of disparate episodes, the technique of collage. The structure of the work’s storytelling is analyzed when the narrator does not tell the story but describes what he hears from Jacques Austerlitz. It is as if it is not a text, but the story itself, which someone tells, and also shows pictures for authenticity. The functions of the hero in the novel gradually shift from people to things, documents, bearers of the memory of individual and collective civilizational catastrophe. These indescribable witnesses break the blockade of traumatic silence around the childhood of Austerlitz, embodied in images of blindness, dumbness, oblivion. Before the protagonist of the work, the “man without a past,” the history of his family, the ghostly happy childhood that was rudely cut short by the separation from his biological parents, is suddenly revealed. Sebald demonstrates a contemporary form of novel narrative in which the truthfulness of the Holocaust narrative is revealed by incorporating the exile’s personal authorial biography, pain, and guilt into the memory of this tragedy. The role of photographs and descriptions of architectural structures in revealing the immanent semantic content of the subject, not manifested verbally, is analyzed. The latter is the key document that unites and structures the important for the writer themes of memories, memory, indifference, oblivion, return to the ghostly past, overcoming of the psychological trauma. Based on the analysis the author concludes that the attitude to the reader as a co-author brings Sebald’s novel closer to the tradition of the European intellectual novel and postmodern hypertexts, in which meaningful units are not presented in a traditional linear sequence, but as a multiplicity of links and transitions. The author notes that the acute experience of humanitarian catastrophe, the multilayered text, the density of meaningful meanings make this work a notable phenomenon in the context of artistic comprehension of traumatic memory.

One of the most important functions of 18th-century occasional decorations was to communicate current political issues. The artistic setting of ceremonies related to political events can of course be analyzed as an independent entity but may also be studied as a fragment of a larger message that encompasses prints, literature and political ceremony. The present article will adopt the latter approach, and analyze the political message of the 1750s on the subject of the division of the Entail of Ostrog, resulting from the so-called “Transaction of Kolbuszowa” in 1753. This event, which had a huge impact on political rela- tions of the time, was also of key importance to the chief players of the period as well as their artistic initiatives (for example J. K. Branicki, who became the Great Crown Hetman after Józef Potocki’s death). The theme of the Entail of Ostrog can be seen in the artistic settings of ceremonies related to the activities of the Senatorial Commission, as well as in those related to two terms of the Crown Tribunal, which in 1754 and 1755 was overshadowed by the consequences of the Kolbuszowa transaction. The above-mentioned bodies acted on behalf of the entire Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; therefore, ideas of political unity and total consensus were emphasized in the decorations. In this way, specific decisions were legitimized. Occasional decorations made reference to the Gigantomachy, understood as an internal conflict, and stressed the importance of overcoming internal enemies for the sake of state unity. Banquets were also of great importance in conveying this message, not only because participation alone was seen as a manifestation of belonging to a certain community, but also because the ideological content of the table decorations presented the political values of the guests and served as a commentary on current political issues.

In the article, I am going to present the image of Polish intellectual based on selected film motifs. The cinema of the Polish People’s Republic created a distinct type of Polish intellectual who appeared in many films. He was not, however, a homogenous type, since a noble assistant or professor was contrasted with a cynical associate professor. I will try to capture the common features and answer the question whether it is possible to talk about a specific, consistent image of an intellectual in the then Polish People’s cinema, or whether the discussed types differ from each other.
W artykule zamierzam zaprezentować obraz polskiego inteligenta na wybranych motywach filmowych. Kino PRL wykreowało osobny typ inteligenta, który pojawiał się w wielu filmach. Nie był jednak typem jednorodnym, gdyż szlachetnemu asystentowi czy profesorowi przeciwstawiano cynicznego docenta. Postaram się uchwycić cechy wspólne i odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy możemy mówić o pewnym spójnym wizerunku intelektualisty w ówczesnym kinie Polski Ludowej, czy też omawiane typy różnią się od siebie.

Special transformation of the meaning of the term occurred in the late nineteenth/twentieth century, when typography ceased to be the exclusive domain of printers and the art of beautiful type. The transformation of the modern world, new ways of communication, as well as changes of social and technological character meant that its functional and productive nature started to be clearly accentuated. Today, when typography entered the digital space, gaining a wide range of new means of expression, its value as a tool of visual communication, of the mediator between the author and the reader is obviously emphasized. Its aesthetic function, so important in the past, becomes of less significance. The paper summarizes various definitions of typography, both those of foreign, as well as of Polish authors, showing the evolution of the concept. Particular attention was paid to the development of the concept of typography in Poland in the difficult period of the communist regime, the chaos of the 90s, and today.

Opis:
Poland (the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) maintained close relations with Sweden between the end of the 16th century and the mid-17th century. Attempts at cooperation (possible union, the Vasa dynasty) intertwined with wars including the war of Livonia in the early 17th century. In the article I take a closer look at three places related to this war: Valmiera, Viljandi and Paide. I used guidebooks to the region, traditional written historiography and a computer game from 2016. The goal is to familiarize the visual history of these places, draw attention to new methods in the humanities (visual history, visual anthropology) and to modernize history itself, also in the context of memorial sites.
