Background: Tattoo is becoming a more and more common form of body decoration of people from representatives of various professions. The aim of this study was: what is the opinion of university students about medical staff having visible tattoos. Material and methods: The study was conducted among the students of four universities in Gdańsk. The questionnaire contained questions about the acceptance of visible tattoos in people working in medical professions. The respondents were also asked about their attitudes to tattoos as a form of body decoration and whether they had tattoos themselves. The statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25 software. Results: Filled-in questionnaires were obtained from 676 respondents, including 477 students of the medical university and 199 students of non-medical universities. The students who have tattoos themselves accept visible tattoos in healthcare professionals to a significantly greater extent (92%) than those who do not have tattoos, but the acceptance of visible tattoos in healthcare professionals in this group turned out to be very high too (75%). The respondents most readily accepted a visible tattoo on the skin of a laboratory diagnostician (75%). Conclusions: University students, regardless of their university profile, consider a visible tattoo as a completely acceptable phenomenon in healthcare professionals.

Opis:
Based on the pure mineral flotation tests of barite, this study investigated the effect law of microwave on barite flotation by using a UV-visible spectrophotometer (L5), solution chemistry calculation, and zeta potential, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and other testing methods. Additionally, red flotation kinetic analysis was carried out to deeply explore the mechanism of C18H33NaO2 flotation of barite under microwave radiation. Mineral flotation tests showed that after microwave treatment, the flotation recovery of barite and deionized water increased by 2.67% and 3.35%, respectively, while that of the microwave action pulp and chemically added pulp decreased by 2.90% and 8.51%, respectively. Microwave action on barite can improve its flotation recovery (up to 95.27%). The action of microwave heating can improve the positive electrical properties of the surface of barite, and accordingly, its specific surface area would be enlarged. In this case, the adsorption rate of sodium oleate on the surface of barite increased, thereby improving the flotation recovery. The flotation kinetics analysis revealed that the k-value of the primary kinetic model was the most informative among the four models of flotation kinetics, and its fitting results can truly reflect the flotation results of barite before and after the microwave action. Through the analysis of barite flotation adsorption experiment under microwave action and with sodium oleate as a collector, this study revealed the mechanism of C1818H33NaO2 on barite flotation under a microwave roaster. This study provides an important reference for the research on efficient barite flotation.

Three species of white rot fungi: Cerrena unicolor, Phlebia lindtneri and Pycnoporus sanguineus were cultured in two different media under five different lighting conditions: dark, white, red, blue, and green light. Laccase, cellobiose dehydrogenase, and protease activities were examined in the samples. Blue light efficiently boosted laccase synthesis in C. unicolor and P. sanguineus, whereas the highest activities (20 654 nkat/l) of P. lindtneri laccase were observed when this fungus was maintained in green light. On the contrary, the green light allowed obtaining the highest activities of cellobiose dehydrogenase of C. unicolor and P. lindtneri, while CDH of P. sanguineus seems to be dependent on white light. It is clearly visible that differences in protease activities are noticeable not only between the lights variants but also among the media used. However, high proteases activities are correlated with light variants inducing laccase in Lindeberg and Holm medium. Contrary to the cellulose-based medium, where they are weak in light variants that lead to high CDH activities.

The antimicrobial impact of visible violet and blue light has been known for more than a century but hardly been applied for purposeful pathogen reduction or prevention. The disinfecting properties of wide-spread warm-white and cool-white light emitting diodes (LEDs) are investigated by irradiation of staphylococci with different LEDs and varying doses. Additionally, the combination of a white and a violet LED illumination is examined. Both white LEDs exhibit an antimicrobial effect, which seems to be dominated by the blue parts of the LED emissions. Unfortunately, the antimicrobial effect is weak in realistic illumination applications. Additional violet LEDs can significantly enhance this impact without a large change in human color perception. This allows reasonable applications in certain medical and domestic environments without endangering humans.

Opis:
Many optical systems benefit from elements that can absorb a broad range of wavelengths over a wide range of angles, independent of polarization. In this paper, we present a nearly perfect absorber with dual broadband and polarization-independent in the visible regime that exploits strong symmetric and asymmetric resonance modes of electromagnetic dipoles. It makes use of a bilayer hollowed-out cross pattern structure which is simple, having five layers that include two stacks of metal film with hollowed-out ribbon in cross patterns, two dielectric spacers, and a metal reflecting layer. Simulations show that the design exhibits a significantly enhanced absorption property when compared to a device with a normal cross pattern structure. The nearly perfect absorption efficiency of the device is above 98.5% at two resonances regimes: from 5.57 × 1014to 6.08 × 1014Hz and from 6.75 × 1014to 7.05 × 1014Hz, and its stable absorption characteristics can be maintained over a wide range of polarizing angle – up to ±90°. This strategy can, in principle, be applied to other material systems and could be useful in diverse applications, including thermal emitters, photovoltaics, and photodetectors.

Iron-carbon-codoped mesoporous titania nanocrystallines were synthesized by a modified sol-gel method based on the self-assembly technique using polyethylene glycol sorbitan monostearate (Tween 60) as template. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N_{2} adsorption, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and transient photocurrent responses analysis. The photocatalytic activity of Fe-C-codoped TiO_{2} nanoparticles were evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO), p-nitrophenol (PNP) and biphenol A (BPA) under visible light irradiation. It was found that the as-prepared Fe-C-codoped TiO_{2} sample showed excellent photocatalytic activity compared to undoped TiO_{2}. The highest activity was obtained for Fe-C-codoped TiO_{2} sample calcined at 520°. The enhanced photocatalytic performances were attributed to the synergetic effects of good crystallizing action, appropriate phase composition and slow recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers. Based on the experimental results, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism of as-prepared Fe-C-codoped TiO_{2} photocatalysts was also proposed and discussed.

Objectives: Nowadays more and more newly introduced light sources (tungsten-halogen, compact fluorescent (CFL) and light-emitting diode (LED) lamps) are used in households. It is important to know whether their radiation poses any possible risk for human health or not. These light sources emit optical radiation not solely in the visible spectrum. Other bands emitted by these sources, i.e., ultraviolet and infrared, are potentially hazardous for human health. The visible light, especially the blue light, could also damage human retina. The purpose of this study was to determine the ultraviolet (UV) and blue light (BL) emissions from halogen bulbs, CFLs and LED lamps, and to evaluate them from the point of view of possible health risks for general public. Material and Methods: The exposure of UV and BL emissions from 19 types of CFLs, 11 types of halogen lamps and 4 types of LED lamps produced by different manufacturers were measured at 200 mm distance from the source. Results: The exposures to UV and BL were below the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) exposure limits in spite of the very conservative assumption of the assessment. Conclusions: Results of this study indicate that the UV and BL radiation from the newly introduced lamps does not exceed the current exposure limit values and thus, in comparison with the former incandescent bulbs, does not result in a higher risk for general public.

Effect of visible light on the process of accelerated oxidation of dye contained in red paprika powder. The effect of temperature and visible light intensity on changes in ground paprika colour was investigated. In determination of changes in colour parameters there were used the colour space L*. a*, b*, the total colour change TCD and sample whiteness index WI. Investigations were carried out at three lighting intensity levels of D65 light (6000, 4500, 0 lx) at storage temperature (30º, 40º, 50ºC). The DOE model for investigation planning included in Statistica Program was used in investigations. The validation investigations were carried out to verify the model. Colour changes in the investigated samples were connected, first of all, with their lighting intensity and less so with storage temperature. A two-stage process of colour changes in the samples illuminated with the light of intensity 6000 lx was found. The carried out investigations can be used in predicting the time of changes in colour parameters of ground paprika exposed to intense radiation in the range of visible light.

The influence of UVA and VIS radiation on the β-carotene biosynthesis by yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa was studied. The impact of radiation characteristic on biomass growth, substrate consumption and β-carotene production in submerged batch culture in bioreactor was studied. Three different types of light sources were used in the experiment: VIS – 15 W, wavelength range from 400 to 800 nm, the largest emission at 420 nm; UVA – 18 W, blue light, wavelength range of 350 to 430 nm, the largest emission at 370 nm; UVA – 20 W, wavelength range from 350 to 575 nm, the largest emission at 350 nm. In cultures conducted with UVA – 18 W radiation the highest β-carotene and carotenoids cellular concentration were achieved, respectively 63.20 μg/gd.w. and 0.97 mg/gd.w.. In cultures subject to VIS radiation a lower β-carotene concentration at 43.60 μg/gd.w. and the total carotenoids concentration at 0.83 mg/gd.w. was obtained. The ultraviolet radiation with the emission peak of radiation at 370 nm promoted the β-carotene and carotenoids production in yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa.

Novel CdS/BiOI heterojunction photocatalysts were successfully prepared by facile method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, the Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra, the Fourier transform infrared spectra, and photoluminescence. It was found that CdS nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the surface of BiOI microspheres. The photodegradation tests showed that the photocatalytic efficiency was increased at first and then decreased when further increasing CdS content in the nanocomposites. The highest activity was obtained by 3%-CdS/BiOI nanocomposites. The enhanced photocatalytic performances were attributed to the matched band potentials of CdS and BiOI, which resulted in the efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Based on the experimental results, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism of CdS/BiOI photocatalysts was also proposed.

The synthesis of Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles using plant parts is always an attractive and eco-friendly method. The present study focuses on the production of ZnO nanoparticles from Zinc Nitrate hexahydrate (Zn (NO3)2•6H2O) using the aqueous extracts of a medicinal plant Micrococca mercurialis. The plant is found to be rich in primary and secondary metabolites such as proteins, steroids and alkaloids, which are responsible and enhancing the biogenic synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles. Leaves, stems, roots and fruits of M. mercurialis were used to prepare the aqueous extracts. The characterization and confirmation of synthesized ZnO nanoparticles was performed by UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The reaction mixtures showed significant and sharp UV absorbance peaks at 305 nm, 299 nm, 311 nm and 302 nm corresponding to the aqueous extracts of leaf, stem, root and fruits reacted with zinc nitrate respectively. It has been proved that the medicinal plant M. mercurialis can be used to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles and the biological method of synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles are safe and good alternative to the chemical and physical methods.
