Opis:
This qualitative study investigates the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and the duration of marriage in the Turkish context and explores spouses’ perceptions, experiences, and solutions concerning IPV. Participants were thirty Turkish couples married for twenty or more years. Data collection tools were a semi-structured interview, observation notes taken during the interview, and a socio-demographic questionnaire. Data analysis showed that psychological violence was the most reported type, while sexual and economic violence was not reported in long-term marriages. Only a few instances of physical violence were reported during the first years of marriage. Regarding gender, the perpetrators of physical IPV were all men except for only one case, while both men and women were the perpetrators and victims of psychological violence. Spouses’ proposed solutions for IPV were identifying the determinants of IPV, encouraging religious and values education, solving economic problems, building communication and patience, learning respect, responsibility, and love; or getting divorced. The study suggests some implications for professionals.

Opis:
This research was conducted to address the experience of workplace violence of Turkish workers from different sectors and to investigate the impact of the exposed violence on their psychological well-being. Data were collected anonymously with printed questionnaires from the volunteer participants and depended on self-reporting. The response rate was 79.0% (1708/2161). The prevalence of workplace violence was found to be 44.8%. The most common type was verbal violence together with mobbing (bullying). Victims of physical violence were mostly males, whereas females were found to be victims of verbal, psychological and sexual violence. Most cases did not result in legal action and the victims remained silent. Psychological well-being of exposed workers in terms of depression, anxiety and stress seemed to deteriorate. Workplace violence remains a silent epidemic in Turkey. Preventive measures against workplace violence and social support for violated workers do not exist.

Despite the legislative initiatives (Act of 29 July 2005 on Counteraction of Domestic Violence) and social initiatives (e.g. ‘Blue Card’), the extent of domestic violence against children has not shown any significant decrease in Poland over the past decade. Taking into consideration the negative impacts of violence experienced in childhood, which manifest themselves across the lifespan of the victim, it is still of the utmost importance to thoroughly recognise the causes, forms and effects of family violence against children. The article presents the most essential reasons for emotional abuse against children analysed within the area of psychology and pedagogics, it indicates the destructive, both immediate and delayed, effects of the experienced violence which show over the lifespan of those harmed by the abuse, and it formulates recommendations regarding action against various forms of psychological violence against children in the home and family.

Opis:
The objective of the research conducted by the author was to obtain an answer to the question: could we distinguish different types of intrafamily violence perpetrators considering a specified profile of personality factors and temperament traits and how domestic violence perpetrators cope with stressful situations? The research was conducted on a group of 325 men who were convicted pursuant to article 207§1 & 2 of harassment over family members. In terms of a gender the group was homogenous. On the basis of the literature on the subject, the following personality traits of violence perpetrators were categorised: locus of control, self-acceptance, aggressiveness, hostility, intelligent quotient and temperament traits. The following research techniques were employed in the study: the Wechsler Intelligence Scale, Berger's Self-Acceptance Scale, the Delta Questionnaire by R. Drwal, the SABD Questionnaire - Buss-Durkee (prepared by J.M. Stanik, A. Roszkowska, J. Kucharewicz), Formal Characteristics of Behaviour - Temperament Inventory (FCZ-KT) by J. Strelau, the WCQ questionnaire (The Ways of Coping Questionnaire) by R.S. Lazarus and S. Folkman, a categorised interview and an analysis of court records. As a result of the analysis conducted on a group of the studied sample of violence perpetrators, four subgroups (clusters), differing in terms of selected personality traits, were specified. They are reactively aggressive perpetrators (113 persons), perpetrators of low preventive competences (71 persons), psychopathic and retaliatory perpetrators (66 persons) and perpetrators with a big adaptive potential (75 persons). Further on, four distinguished groups have been characterised in terms of stress-coping strategies, and psychological processes of coping with stress proceeded differently in the research group.

Opis:
We live in the world of ubiquitous violence and on the other hand, reflection over violence. Violence breeds violence, but what breeds reflection over the violence? According to Pierre Bourdieu, Harrison C. White, and others, we can say that violence could help us understand the social reality and create a more sophisticated theory which gain together the antisocial behaviors and their social and individual backgrounds. Anton van Harskamp in preface to work Conflicts in Social Science shows, that social violence compare to the others social problems is not a safe field of research. Numerous social scientists find themselves caught up in an inextricable entanglement of scientific conflicts and societal antagonisms, we have thousands – as van Harskamp says – theories about violence and conflicts. In naïve thinking we can say, that violence rose as a form of social metaphor. Especially for Pierre Bourdieu violence and conflicts are connected with the politics of language. In his theoretical and sociological universe, social capital, symbolical power and habitus help understand the hidden dimension of symbolic violence shown as the violence without violence. The next author Slavoj Žižek explore the inner world of violence as a social and language mechanism. Bourdieu and Žižek follow by philosophical and narrative theories show violence in the everyday experience as a pattern of individual behavior. In contrary to these authors, Harrisona C. White explore social conflicts as a part of social networks and social spaces. The leading theories will be divided into three main subjects: metaphors, symbols and performances, especially the Randall Collins conception of interaction ritual chains is preferred as a crucial for understanding the impact of violence into the society.

Despite the fact that the situation in our society is sufficiently legally treated, the issue of domestic violence at the senior is still only in its infancy. Intervention and prevention would not only avoided tampering with this group of people, but to offer procedures that would help at least reduce the risk. The paper is focused on the issue of violence on seniors as society-wide problem. It defines domestic violence, causes, forms and types of violence. In the end, it offers opportunities for protection and prevention.

Opis:
Contemporary the issue of violence against women has found its place in public discourse. It seems that the mythology of violence (the description of misconceptions about it) was a very important factor in the process of developing „social vigilance” against this phenomenon. Publicizing the problem of violence against women was a result of The Battered Women’s Movement. The need to struggle with the mythology of violence underlined the leading representative of this movement L.E.A. Walker: „It is important to refute all the myths surrounding battered women in order to understand fully why battering happens, how it affects people, and how it can be stopped”. The aim of the study is to examine the myths about domestic violence – those of the 1970s and 1980s, when The Battered Women’s Movement began to develop, and those of today. The verification of the opinions dealing with the phenomenon was based on scientific literature. Three categories of myths were analyzed: the nature, causes and consequences of violence. Modern literature suggest that there has been a dramatic change in public convictions about intimate partner violence – some opinions considered in the past as mythical has become the truth and vice versa. Social changes also led to the creation of new myths e.g. violence is typical for heterosexual relationships. Such processes carry a risk of flawed perception of violence by society. This is why preventive actions should not only indicate the presence of violence in our direct surroundings, but also update the general knowledge about it.

Opis:
Research Objective: The article aims to analyse the concept of structural violence to outline its essential theoretical references. The Research Problem and Methods: The main problem raised in the text is the distinction of structural violence against other forms of violence. The article uses the method of conceptual analysis supplemented with case studies. The Process of Argumentation: The definition of structural violence proposed in the paper emphasizes the presence of intentional or unintentional systemic conditions that violate or limit the rights of individuals or groups. In the order of analysis, structural violence is first distinguished from other forms of violence: personal and legitimist. There are three forms of structural violence manifestation: social injustice, direct violence caused by an unjust social system, and a permanent threat embedded in the social system. In connection with the above, the possibility of identifying structural violence with theoretical tools developed by John Rawls to specify the conditions of structural justice is indicated. As a critical complement to this approach, a caveat is discussed that shows that however useful, Rawls’s approach may not be sufficient. Finally, the issue of cultural and symbolic violence is analysed. Research Results: The conclusion drawn from the presented analysis is that structural violence is inextricably linked with social structure. A significant difficulty in minimizing it is that its sources are often invisible, remaining somewhat outside the framework of the current social paradigm. Therefore, the fight against this type of violence requires far-reaching interventions at the level of public awareness. Conclusions, Innovations, and Recommendations: Recommendations that can be derived from the above considerations focus on the need to conduct social campaigns that have the opportunity to gradually change social awareness and the often unconscious social status quo.
