Opis:
This research aims to discover the potential of hyperspectral remote sensing data for mapping mountain vegetation ecosystems. First, the importance of mountain ecosystems to the global system should be stressed due to mountainous ecosystems forming a very sensitive indicator of global climate change. Furthermore, a variety of biotic and abiotic factors influence the spatial distribution of vegetation in the mountains, producing a diverse mosaic leading to high biodiversity. The research area covers the Szrenica Mount region on the border between Poland and the Czech Republic - the most important part of the Western Karkonosze and one of the main areas in the Karkonosze National Park (M&B Reserve of the UNESCO). The APEX hyperspectral data that was classified in this study was acquired on 10th September 2012 by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in the framework of the EUFAR HyMountEcos project. This airborne scanner is a 288-channel imaging spectrometer operating in the wavelength range 0.4-2.5 μm. For reference patterns of forest and non-forest vegetation, maps (provided by the Polish Karkonosze National Park) were chosen. Terrain recognition was based on field walks with a Trimble GeoXT GPS receiver. It allowed test and validation dominant polygons of 15 classes of vegetation communities to be selected, which were used in the Support Vector Machines (SVM) classification. The SVM classifier is a type of machine used for pattern recognition. The result is a post classification map with statistics (total, user, producer accuracies, kappa coefficient and error matrix). Assessment of the statistics shows that almost all the classes were properly recognised, excluding the fern community. The overall classification accuracy is 79.13% and the kappa coefficient is 0.77. This shows that hyperspectral images and remote sensing methods can be support tools for the identification of the dominant plant communities of mountain areas.

Opis:
The paper deals with the evaluation of mountain meadow vegetation condition using in-situ measurements of the fraction of Accumulated Photosynthetically Active Radiation (fAPAR) and Leaf Area Index (LAI). The study analyses the relationship between these parameters and spectral properties of meadow vegetation and selected invasive species with the goal of finding out vegetation indices for the detection of fAPAR and LAI. The developed vegetation indices were applied on hyperspectral data from an APEX (Airborne Prism Experiment) sensor in the area of interest in the Krkonoše National Park. The results of index development on the level of the field data were quite good. The maximal sensitivity expressed by the coefficient of determination for LAI was R2 = 0.56 and R2 = 0.79 for fAPAR. However, the sensitivity of all the indices developed at the image level was quite low. The output values of in-situ measurements confirmed the condition of invasive species as better than that of the valuable original meadow vegetation, which is a serious problem for national park management.

Opis:
The goal of the paper is a presentation of field remote sensing methods for the analysis of the trampled plants of a highly protected mountain meadow ecosystem (M&B UNESCO Reserve and one of the most important Polish National Parks). The research area covers a core part of the Western Tatras - the Gąsienicowa Valley and Kasprowy Wierch summit, which are among the most visited destinations of the Polish Tatras. The research method is based on field hyperspectral measurements, using the ASD FieldSpec 3 spectrometer, on the dominant plant species of alpine swards. Sampling sites were located on trampled areas (next to trails) and reference plots, with the same species, but located more than 10 m from the trail (where the probability of trampling was very low, but the same composition of analysed plants). In each case, homogenous plots with a domination of one plant species were investigated. Based on the hyperspectral measurements, spectral characteristics as well as vegetation indices were analysed with the ANOVA statistical test. This indicated a varied resistance to trampling of the studied plant species. The analysis of vegetation indices enabled the selection of those groups which are the most useful for research into mountain vegetation condition: the broadband greenness group; the narrowband greenness group, measuring chlorophyll content and cell structure; and the canopy water content group. The results of the analyses show that vegetation of the High Tatras is characterised by optimal ranges of remote sensing indices. Only plants located nearest to the trails were in a worse condition (chlorophyll and water content was lower for the reference targets). These differences are statistically significant, but the measured values indicate a good condition of vegetation along trampled trails, within the range of optimum plant characteristics.

W 2003 r. rozpoznano roślinność i stan gleb.
The section of the upper Narew River valley protected as the Narew National Park is known for a unique system of anastomosing riverbeds, which supports extensive areas of wetlands. The frequency and duration of floods, which were crucial for the development of floodplain fens, have changed in the last decade due to alteration of the hydrological regime both upstream and downstream the national park. In order to find the effects of these hydrological changes on vegetation, we compared present and past distribution of plant communities along transect across the valley, where groundwater level has been regularly measured for the last 33 years. Along the transect, vegetation relevés were made in the 1970s and repeated in 2003 in the same sites. Next to each relevé, soil and hydrological conditions were analysed. Comparison of vegetation data showed that the area of tufted sedge communities Caricetumelatae, which used to be the dominating and the most representative vegetation type in the park, drastically decreased. At the same time, we observed the expansion of not peat-forming slender tufted sedge community Caricetumgracilis and invasion of the common reed Phragmitesaustralis to sedge fens. In effect, natural values of the area have significantly diminished. The hydrological and soil analyses revealed a significant lowering of the groundwater level during growth season in the last decade, which was mainly due to shortened duration of floods. This resulted in desiccation of peat soils. The extent of these changes is reflected in the extent of changes in vegetation. Our results show that, even in the range of hydrological conditions which supports wetland communities, some changes can largely affect species composition and conservational values. This is of high importance in the planning of floodplain management and its use for flood control purposes.

This paper presents analysis of plant cover condition in Gasienicowa Valley in the Tatra Mts. depending on various trampling intensity. Measurements were taken with ASD FieldSpec 3 spectrometer (its spectral range is 350-2500nm) on 8 dominant plant species of alpine swards: Juncus trifidus, Oreochloa disticha, Agrostis rupestris, Deschampsia flexuosa, Festuca airoides, Festuca picta, Luzula alpino-pilosa, Nardus stricta. These plant species were located: 0-5m, 5-10m and more than 10m distant from a touristic trail (control point). Spectral characteristics as well as vegetation indices were analyzed with ANOVA test, which showed differiential resistance to trampling of investigated plant species. The most resistant species were: Nardus stricta and Deschampsia flexuosa, whereas Oreochloa disticha and Festuca airoides appeared to be vulnerable to trampling. However, all vegetation indices for plant species were in its optimum range, so it proves that they are in a good condition. The analysis of vegetation indices enabled choosing those groups, which are the most useful in the research of mountain vegetation condition. They are: NDVI, ARVI, EVI from the broadband greeness group and mSR705 and mNDVI from narrowband greenness group (measuring chlorophyll content and cell structure), as well as WBI, NDWI, NDII from canopy water content group. The most important factor that effects investigated plant species condition is water content. The research showed that hyperspectral analysis is useful in studying human impact on vegetation cover and needs to be developed.

Opis:
The paper presents a study on the determination of soil moisture using the so-called triangle method which is based on analysis of the scatter plots of LST (Land Surface Temperature) and VI (Vegetation Index). On the basis of LST-VI scatter plot the called temperature-vegetation drought index, TVDI (Temperature-Vegetation Dryness Index), can be determined, which is a good measure of the soil moisture available to plants. However, determination of such an index can be carried out in several manners and using different vegetation indices. The aim of the work was to present and compare three types of method for determining the TVDI index using two different vegetation indices, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vagetation Index) and EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index), with particular emphasis on determining the so-called "dry edge”. The TVDI drought index was determined for the Kampinos National Park area. The authors obtained interesting results, consistent with the literature. In this paper the authors present in detail, and compare with each other, three methods of determining the TVDI index using two vegetation indices - NDVI and EVI, with particular emphasis on determining so-called "dry edge". In addition, a detailed statistical analysis of the results obtained by using three modifications of the triangle method was performed. It is worth to mention that soil moisture, and thus the measuring methods, are important from both the scientific and the practical point of view (e.g. risk of fire, agriculture).

Opis:
The Czerwona Woda River is the main watercourse in the Stołowe Mountains National Park and drains the major part of the Stołowe Mts. It was regulated in the past, but its channel has been spontaneously naturalized. Now, managed spruce forests grow along almost the entire length of this small mountain stream. The aims of the present study were to investigate diversity of plant communities connected with the Czerwona Woda stream and to prepare detailed vegetation maps. The results obtained can potentially be a reference for future restoration projects implemented in the Stołowe Mountains National Park. As a result of vegetation mapping, there were distinguished 20 plant communities representative of the current vegetation and 3 communities representative of the potential vegetation. Phytosociological data on the vegetation was documented by making 62 phytosociological relevés. Based on these, 9 forest communities were distinguished, of which 3 were classified into associations, 1 – into alliance, 5 – into secondary forest communities. Furthermore, there were distinguished 14 non-forest communities, of which 10 were classified into associations. Several of the phytosociological classes distinguished have been reported for the first time in the Stołowe Mountains National Park.

Opis:
The paper presents a method of Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper satellite image processing to assess the condition of forests in the Tatra National Park (southern Poland). Selected images were acquired on 1987/09/01, 2005/09/02 and 2011/09/03 from the same sensor with maximum time interval for the first and last scene and from similar phenological period. Firstly, the data were radiometrically corrected using the ATCOR 2/3 software and Digital Terrain Model from the ASTER mission. Quality of the correction was assessed calculating RMSE for reflectance values from images and resampled spectral characteristics collected in terrain. RMSE was in range 3−10%. Next, basing on Landsat images, Normalized Difference Infrared Index (NDII) and a Maximum Likelihood supervised classificatory, following dominant land cover types were identified: forests (including dwarf pine), grasslands, rocks, lakes, shadows (additionally clouds were dis−tinguished on data from 1987/09/01). It allowed to select forest areas with producer accuracy not worse than 97.69% and user accuracy not worse than 98.31%. On corrected Landsat images Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI, an overall vegetation state) and Moisture Stress Index (MSI, canopy water content) were calculated. Vegetation indices discriminated forest state using the decision tree method. The worst overall condition was observed for the 1987 (about 21% of forest stands were in the worst condition and 87% were in medium condition), while the best one in 2005 (75.51% forest stands were in good condition and 10.66% were in the best condition). In case of 2011, the overall condition was quite good, but there were large areas with poor condition caused by bark beetle outbreaks. Proposed method allows for a fast and objective assessment of forest condition. It is possible to detect damaged areas or stands in poor condition. It can be complement for traditional methods of monitoring and management in forestry and nature protection.

Opis:
Changes in the herbaceous layer (vascular plants), taking place between 1959 and 2016 on the permanent study plot in the compartment 319 of the Strict Reserve in the Białowieża National Park are presented. Zaręba [1972] presented phytosociological research carried out in 1959 on the 1.2 ha plot. The author established 10 relevés (size between 100 and 400 m2), in which in total 91 different species of vascular plants were noted. In 2016, the similar study was conducted, using slightly modified methods (the inventory of plants involved the total area of the study plot). The comparison of data recorded during both investigations revealed that the total number of plant species declined from the initial 91 to current 83. During the ca. 60−year long period, 43 plant species disappeared completely and were replaced by 35 new species. In the declining group, almost the half (20) were species important from the point of view of nature conservation, including four Red List species (Arnica montana, Goodyera repens, Lathyrus laevigatus, Trolius europaeus), 10 plant species protected by law, and several other precious species related to rare and declining woodland community types. The obtained results confirm the findings of other authors describing unfavourable changes in the flora of the Białowieża Forest during the past several tens of years. The floristic richness is an important part of the overall biodiversity of Białowieża Forest. It appears that strict protection does not secure the maintenance of this key component. Thus, an attempt to preserve diverse values of Białowieża Forest on a sustainable basis should, first of all, look for a proper balance between strict and active protection. The later can (and should) be integrated within the multifunctional forest management, conducted on the prevailing area of the Białowieża Forest.

Opis:
This paper presents results of abundance field research, distribution and habitat and phytocoenotic preferences of Trisetum sibiricum on the Gutowo Meadows (Urszulewo Plain, NE Poland), in a locality outside the continuous range of distribution. The species grown in wet, not used meadows, in places overflooded by beavers, partially afforested. The research was carried out in 2013 and the results were compared with analogical data from 2000–2002. Currently a higher abundance of species (circa 1600 tufts), a larger area of the locality (circa 2.5 ha), larger phytosociological spectrum and a larger share of hygrophilous species in species composition of the examined phytocoenoses was revealed. In 2013 a share of Trisetum sibiricum was noted in 12 plant communities from seven classes (Phragmitetea australis, Scheuchzerio-Caricetea nigrae, Bidentetea tripartiti, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea, Artemisietea vulgaris, Alnetea glutinosae and Querco-Fagetea), and in 2000–2002 – only in seven plant communities from three classes (Scheuchzerio-Caricetea nigrae, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea and Artemisietea vulgaris). Formerly the species was listed mainly in phytocoenoses of Angelico-Cirsietum oleracei and currently most often in phytocoenoses of Junco-Molinietum.
