Opis:
Early blight disease caused by Alternaria sp. is one of the most devastating diseases of Solanaceous crops widely distributed in Sudan. The aim of this study was to determine the genetic variation among different Alternaria isolates recovered from different Solanaceae crops showing typical symptoms of early blight disease. Infected leaves of tomato, potato, eggplant and pepper were collected from different geographical zones in Sudan. The recovered fungal isolates were identified to the genus level based on cultural and morphological characteristics. Five representative isolates were sent to the CABI Bioscience, U.K. for confirmation. The genetic relationship among the isolates was determined using the amplified fragments length polymorphism (AFLP) technique and the generated data were used to create similarity matrices using the PAST 3.01 software package. Dendrograms were constructed based on Jaccard’s similarity coefficients. A total of 70 fungal isolates was recovered from the tested plants and all of them showed morphological characteristics typical of Alternaria spp. The conidia appeared in multiple-branched chains with spore sizes in the range of 2.38−13.09 μm × 12.30−43.63 μm. Therefore, the isolates were identified as Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissl. The identification was then confirmed by CABI.AFLPbased dendrogram which revealed five clusters with a significant cophenetic correlation coefficient (r = 0.834) between the dendrogram and the original similarity matrix irrespective of their geographical origins. Eighteen (75%) of the Alternaria isolated from tomato leaves were clustered together in cluster I and five isolates formed two separate clusters, viz. cluster IV (T-Kh5 and T-H1) and cluster V (T-H4 and T-Med2). The remaining isolate, T-Am5, grouped with one of the potato isolates in cluster III. The other isolates which were recovered from potato, pepper and eggplants were all separated from the tomato isolates in the largest cluster.

Opis:
Common whitefish (Coregonus maraena) in Poland belongs to the endangered species. The degradation of the environment causes common whitefish to lose its natural reproduction sites. The natural genetic structure of whitefish has been compromised by anthropogenetic activities involving eutrophication, river regulation, the introduction of non-native species and as well as excessive exploitation of the species. The genetic variability of common whitefish (Coregonus maraena) from 2 sites: Pomeranian Bay and the lower Oder river, was assessed using microsatellite markers. A total of 45 caught individuals were analysed (26 from Pomeranian Bay and 19 from the Oder river). Polymorphism at nine loci, Str60INRA, Str73INRA, Strutta 12, OmyFgt1TUF, Str85INRA, Str591INRA, Ssa85, Ssa197, T3-13 was assessed. The results indicated that all the investigated populations showed a high level of genetic variability. The level of genetic variability was determined using the FST parameter and was high investigated populations (0.215). Microsatellite analysis demonstrated a higher observed heterozygosity as compared with the expected heterozygosity in all the investigated populations. The FIS coefficient values below zero in all the investigated populations of common whitefish indicate the excess of heterozygotes. The high number of heterozygotes may be related with a more intense influx of genes from outside of the local population. The study demonstrated that microsatellite markers (SSR) are very useful in the assessment of the genetic variability of common whitefish (Coregonus maraena). Our results characterize the selected populations of whitefish and may be useful for further research on this endangered species.
W sumie analizowano 45 pozyskanych osobników (26 z Zatoki Pomorskiej i 19 z Dolnej Odry). W pracy oceniano polimorfizm dziewięciu loci: Str60INRA, Str73INRA, Strutta 12 OmyFgt1TUF, Str85INRA, Str591INRA, Ssa85, Ssa197, T3-13.

Opis:
Coltsfoot leaves are a traditional raw material, rich in polysaccharides and phenolics. The variability of the contents of these main compounds was determined, using plant material originated from 22 natural populations of Tussilago farfara L. growing in various regions of Poland. In the years 2008–2009, plants from each investigated population were collected in the Garden of Medicinal Plants in Plewiska near Poznań (Poland). Coltsfoot leaves were harvested in the middle of June and July of 2010, and then dried at room temperature. In these raw material we quantified swelling index (describing mucilage content) and spectrophotometrically: the amounts of total polyphenols, polyphenols unadsorbed on hide powder (non-tannin phenolics) and tannins (expressed as pyrogallol equivalent) as well as the sum of hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (expressed as rosmarinic acid) and flavonoids (expressed as quercetin). The demonstrated results show the relatively high and balanced contents of the basic active compounds, especially flavonoids (0.7–1.3%) and polysaccharides (swelling index: 8.0–14.5). In addition, it was found that flavonoids and mucilage in coltsfoot leaves fluctuate in only a small range (V=11–13%), regardless of overshadow and the harvest time of raw material.

Jako materiał roślinny wykorzystano 22 naturalne populacje Tussilago farfara L., pochodzące z różnych regionów Polski. W latach 2008–2009 pobrano rośliny z każdej badanej populacji i założono kolekcję pochodzeniową w Ogrodzie Roślin Leczniczych w Plewiskach koło Poznania. Liście podbiału do analiz fitochemicznych zbierano w połowie czerwca i lipca 2010 r., a następnie suszono w temperaturze pokojowej.

Opis:
Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium L., Onagraceae) is one of important medicinal plants used especially in the treatment of urogenital disorders, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatitis. The therapeutic effects of E. angustifolium extracts comprise antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and also antimicrobial activities. The aim of the present review was to provide the information on the botany, phytochemistry and traditional uses of E. angustifolium. This plant is a widespread circumboreal species of North America and Eurasia, tolerant in terms of habitat conditions, and often occupying man-made open habitats. Phytochemical studies on E. angustifolium resulted in the identification of about 250 different metabolites, including about 170 substances found for the first time in this plant in the last six years (2014–2019). Fireweed has an abundance of polyphenolic compounds, particularly ellagitannins. Oenothein B and quercetin-3-O-glucuronide are proposed as markers for the identification and standardization of the plant raw material. E. angustifolium exhibits significant phytochemical variability in relation to the geographical origin, plant part and time of harvest/vegetation phase. Survey of the ethnobotanical literature showed that the above-mentioned species has been widely used not only as a medicinal, but also as an edible, honey and decorative plant.

Opis:
Heart rate is constantly changing under the influence of many control signals, as manifested by heart rate variability (HRV). HRV is a nonstationary, irregularly sampled signal, the spectrum of which reveals distinct bands of high, low, very low and ultra-low frequencies (HF, LF, VLF, ULF). VLF and ULF components are the least understood, and their analysis requires HRV records lasting many hours. Moreover, there are still no well-established methods for the reliable extraction of these components. The aim of this work was to select, implement and compare methods which can solve this problem. The performance of multiband filtering (MBF), empirical mode decomposition and the short-time Fourier transform was tested, using synthetic HRV as the ground truth for methods evaluation as well as real data of three patients selected from 25 polysomnographic records with a clear HF component in their spectrograms. The study provided new insights into the components of long-term HRV, including the character of its amplitude and frequency modulation obtained with the Hilbert transform. In addition, the reliability of the extracted HF, LF, VLF and ULF waveforms was demonstrated, and MBF turned out to be the most accurate method, though the signal is strongly nonstationary. The possibility of isolating such waveforms is of great importance both in physiology and pathophysiology, as well as in the automation of medical diagnostics based on HRV.

The paper examined water resources insecurity arising from climatic change and variability, coupled with increased population and economic development in in Yewa basin, with a view to understanding the relationship between climatic variables and hydrological parameters operating within the basin. Thus, the study entails assessment of the effects of climate change and variability on water resources and its implication on both the physical environment and the hydrological regime, using the water evaluation and planning (WEAP) system model. Data employed included water supply and demand for Domestic, Commercial, Industrial and Agriculture, as well as climatic data (rainfall and Temperature) and runoff. As revealed by the Scenario fabrication, 45.24% of the annual water requirement within Yewa Basin is not met, with water potentials of Annual mean discharge of 3682.46 m3/s (±830.1) and Annual mean rainfall of 1106.26m (±475.25), and with coefficients of variation of 40.88 and 73.73, respectively. This deficit calls for an appropriate water resources management mechanism to be put into use in Yewa Basin.

Opis:
Seed and seedling vigour is an aspect of seed quality which affects field establishment and performance. Low maize yields have been reported  to be affected by several factors in which poor quality seed with low seed and seedling vigour. Information is scarce on seed and seedling vigour in maize inbred lines developed for tropical environments. Fifteen genotypes of tropical maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines were evaluated to determine the level of differences in seed and seedling vigour traits, and extent of relationships among traits and their heritability. A substantial amount of genetic variability was found, which suggested that most of the traits under study could be improved through selection and utilized in breeding programs. Positive and signifi- cant interrelationship  among  seed germination  and seedling  traits  and  a positive  correlation  between  seed germination and seed vigour and field emergence showed that these could be given due consideration in crop improvement for seed and seedling vigour. High genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance were obtained for seed germination, seed emergence, shoot length and seedling vigour index I and II, revealing the possibility of improvement in these characters through direct selection. The principal component analysis (PCA) identified seed emergence, shoot length, seedling vigour index I and II and tetrazolium vigour as characters that contributed greatly to variation in seed vigour in the maize inbred lines. Cluster analysis partitioned the genotypes into two groups, with group I consisting of seven genotypes and group II comprised the other eight genotypes, which suggested that hybridization between the two groups could lead to high level of heterosis. Genotype V5  had superior seedling vigour traits compared to other genotypes. Seedling emer- gence, shoot length, seedling vigour index I, seedling vigour index II and tetrazolium vigour are effective characters for good seedling vigour traits in maize inbred lines investigated.

Opis:
The paper examined how the farm management support provided by public extension to mitigate the effects of climate variability influences farmers’ production, and whether this support considers farmers’ capital assets. Both probability and non-probability sampling procedures were used to select districts, municipalities and farmers from 20 villages of Limpopo province, South Africa in January, 2014. Semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect data from field-level extension agents and smallholder grain farmers. The most common climate variability coping strategy promoted by many agents was climate-smart agriculture practices. This strategy was applied by most users and non-users of extension support. The most popular channel used by agents to communicate information to farmers was farm visits. There were indications that agents did not consider producers’ capital assets in their choice of channels to communicate information to producers. Results further indicate that extension support, including climate variability information, contributed to increased crop yields, albeit small. It is recommended that field trials be done to ensure proper application of climate variability coping measures. More use of mass media and group methods to supplement farm visits is recommended.
Do badań przeprowadzonych w styczniu 2014 roku wybrano powiaty, gminy i rolników z 20 wsi w prowincji Limpopo w Afryce Południowej, przy zastosowaniu doboru losowego i nielosowego.

Two statistical methods, fractal geometry and geometric morphometrics, are tested for their applicability to ostracod systematics. For this comparison, two morphologically similar ostracod species (Krithe compressa and Krithe iniqua) whose genus−level systematics is still incompletely resolved, are selected. Twenty−nine right valves of each species were collected from the upper Pliocene samples at the Monte San Nicola section in southern Italy. Statistical analyses (MANOVA on morphometric shape variables, and D values) were utilized to test if geometric morphometrics and fractal analysis are appropriate into discriminating between the two species. Both methods succeeded in distinguishing the species statistically. The fractal analysis of the two ostracod species shows D values centered on 1.31±0.02 for Krithe iniqua and on 1.40±0.02 for Krithe compressa. Geometric morphometric analysis indicates significant differences between the two species and allows studying intra−populational variability as well as. The most variable traits indicated by geometric morphometrics are vestibular area and posterior outline of the shell, indicating that these traits are the most relevant for the systematics of the species analyzed. Both fractal geometry and geometric morphometrics provide a measure of population variability. Fractal analysis has the advantage of being free from any subjectivity in the selection of characters and could be most appropriate to use for analysis of complex ornamentation for systematic purposes. However, a possible advantage of geometric morphometrics over fractal analysis is its ability to indicate where statistically significant variations in shape occur on the shell.

Genotypic and phenotypic variances, genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance were estimated for 16 agronomical characters in West African okra for two seasons, using 25 West African okra lines of diverse origin. Considerable differences were observed for some characters in the two seasons. Number  of days to flowering, number of leaves at flowering, plant height at flowering and number of pods at branches showed  seasonal differences. The estimates of genotypic coefficients of variation (gcv) in the two seasons were close in many cases. The gcv values ranged from 1.41 for number of days to flowering in the early season to 68.63 for number of branches per plant in the late season planting. Heritability estimates ranged from 5.02% for number of leaves at flowering in the early season to 99.54% for weight of matured pod during the early season. This study highlighted the significance of genotype-environment interaction in the breeding programmes of West African okra. The relatively large genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability estimates and genetic advance for number of pods at stem, number of pods per plant, number of branches per plant, weight of matured pods and seed yield per plant, were indicative of likely effectiveness of selection for such characters.

This study investigates the lower Tigris basin’s the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) sensitivity in 2000–2016 to regional climate variability reflected by the monthly precipitation and temperature time series of seven global datasets as well as to four global circulation indices. To examine the effect of climate variability on the different ecosystems, the study area has been classified into 10 smaller natural and anthropogenic landscapes based on landforms and land cover patterns. The preliminary analysis showed that the maximum biological productivity reflected by the NDVI of March and April has the highest correlation (0.5–0.8) to the same cumulative amounts of October–March period total precipitation and January–March period mean temperatures according to all datasets. In addition, this article showed there is a correlation between landscapes’ NDVI and global modulation represented by the September–February state of El Nińo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) (0.55–0.70) and December state of the dipole mode index (DMI) (0.35–0.72). The significant differences in the original precipitation and temperature levels according to the different datasets have urged the use of normalized time series: z-score of temperatures and analogous six-months the standardized precipitation index (SPI). Quercus alnifolia is an endemic species in Cyprus, and it is rated as Vulnerable (VU) in the Red List of Oaks. Although Q. alnifolia has a great ecological importance, there are only few studies about this species. In this work we have studied the natural variability of this species by analyzing acorn dimensions, acorn mass, length of embryo, moisture content of acorns and seed germinability among the seven acorn provenances, collected in Cyprus. We also determined the seeds responses to drying. Germination trials were also carried out, and differences in seed germination among populations were examined. Rate of water loss and its effect on seed germination was also estimated by application of specific desiccation treatments. The results showed that acorn characteristics significantly differed between the populations, following a general trend to reduce their dimensions and mass with the altitude increase. Seed germination was high for all studied populations, and germination behaviour was similar for all populations. Desiccation of acorns below 35% resulted in a great reduction of seed germination capacity.

Opis:
Provenance trials were designed to analyse the quantitative responses of tree species to environmental variables found in different experiment location. However, we have still limited knowledge how natural and artificial selection affects genetic variation of the species populations gather in such experimental sites. We have used bulked DNA-based RAPD and ISJ analysis to investigate genetic diversity and differentiation of Scots pine populations from two Polish locations of IUFRO 1982 provenance trial placed in Kórnik and in Supraśl. Applied categories of DNA markers differed in terms of revealing genetic diversity of the species. Ten RAPD primers applied in the study yielded a total of 75 bands, of which 21 (28%) and 15 (20%) were polymorphic in Kórnik and in Supraśl, respectively. Six ISJ primers revealed 42 bands of which 4 (9.52%) and 14 (33.3%) were polymorphic in Kórnik and in Supraśl, respectively. The genetic diversity and differentiation was low, as expressed by He=0.071 and He=0.085, and by genetic distance values which ranged from 0.0 to 0.240 (on average 0.081) and from 0.017 to 0.188 (on average 0.094) for Kórnik and Supraśl, respectively. Location of provenance trial appeared to have a significant influence on revealed level of genetic polymorphism and pattern of interpopulation differentiation. However, genetic structure found for analysed Scots pine provenances from IUFRO 1982 in Kórnik was also confirmed for Supraśl experimental site. In the light of available data we also discussed the influence of historical migration routes and gene flow on observed genetic variation of the species.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to identify characters which determine the yield and the content of silymarin in the fruits (achenes) of Silybum marianum as well as to show the range of their variation. The research was performed based on field experiments conducted at the Mochełek Research Station (53o13’ N; 17o51’ E) over 2003-2005. Fruit yield and the content of silymarin were affected mainly by weather conditions, the forecrop and the sowing time. The coefficient of variance for fruit yields was 37.3%, and the content of silymarin – 12.7%. Plant height prior to harvest, number of fruits per anthodium on lateral and main shoots, thousand fruit weight, number of anthodiums with pappus and number of all the anthodiums per plant were significantly correlated with fruit yield. The content of silymarin was positively correlated with the number of plants per m2 prior to harvest, plant height prior to harvest and fruit yield, and negatively correlated with the content of total N in the reserve material of fruits. The content of flavonolignans which make up the silymarin appeared relatively constant and only silydianin changes slightly more than the content of silychristin and isosilybin.
Wskazano cechy skorelowane z plonem i zawartością sylimaryny. Pod-stawę badań stanowiły doświadczenia polowe prowadzone w Stacji Badawczej Mochełek (53o13’ N; 17o51’ E) w latach 2003-2005. Plon owoców zależał głównie od warunków po-godowych i przedplonu, a zawartość sylimaryny od terminu siewu. Współczynnik zmien-ności plonów owoców wynosił 37,3%, a zawartości sylimaryny – 12,7%.
