Opis:
Soil contamination caused by the NaCl used to de-ice slippery roads in winter is now recognized as one of the major causes of nutrient disorders and death in urban trees. It is believed that polyisoprenoids may have a specific role in the adaptation of plants to adverse conditions and habitats; it is further believed that in the cell, they may exhibit a protective effect in response to biotic and abiotic stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of salt stress on the content of prenol lipids in the leaves of Crimean linden (Tilia ‘Euchlora’). The Cl content in the slightly damaged (“healthy”) leaves averaged 0.96%, while that in the heavily damaged (“sick”) leaves averaged 2.02%. The leaves of control trees contained on average 0.57% Cl. The Na contents in the healthy and damaged leaves were 208 mg/kg and 1038 mg/kg, respectively, and the Na content in the control areas was 63 mg/kg. A mixture of polyprenols consisting of four compounds, prenol-9, prenol-10, prenol-11 and prenol-12, was identified in the leaves of Crimean linden. This mixture was dominated by prenol-10 (2.16–6.90 mg/g). The polyprenol content was highest in the leaves of “healthy” trees (approximately 13.31 mg/g), was lower in the case of “sick” trees (approximately 9.18 mg/g), and was the lowest in the control trees (mean 4.71 mg/g). No changes were observed in the composition of the mixture of polyprenols under these conditions. The results suggest that polyprenols may affect the accumulation of Cl in leaves. This phenomenon is evidenced by the high content of prenols in the leaves of trees considered “healthy” but growing under conditions of increased soil salinity and the lower content of prenols in the leaves of the “sick” and control trees. It is advisable to further investigate the role of prenol lipids in the leaves of trees subjected to salt stress

Opis:
Inonotus rickii (Pat.) Reid is a pathogenic wood-decaying fungus that causes severe decay in several ornamental urban trees in Europe. It has been known to occur on different hosts in Sicily (Italy) since 1985, and in Rome (Italy) since 2003. Some physical and mechanical wood features were studied according to the standards in order to propose an investigation methodology to set a deterioration ranking of urban trees. In this phase of the study, Celtis australis L., Acer negundo L., Acer campestre L., Robinia pseudoacacia L., Tilia × vulgaris Hayne, Ulmus minor Mill., Platanus × acerifolia (Aiton) Willd. and Quercus ilex L. were studied. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and M-ANOVA tests to check the differences among the specimens. A risk matrix was created in order to combine the features that showed statistical differences between the control specimens and the inoculated specimens, in order to establish, in vitro, a degradation ranking among the wood species. The wood species which showed no in vitro durability to I. rickii, were the same ones that displayed susceptibility in the living trees.

Opis:
There is increasing number of trees dying in large urban agglomerations. The problem is mostly pronounced in the case of street trees. In Polish cities, apart of pollutions generated by traffic, an important factor that causes death of trees is high salt concentration as a result of winter salt application for de-icing of streets. The aim of the study was to assess the growth of limes (Tilia cordata) planted along highly trafficked Warsaw street and exposed, among others, to salt in a form of saline aerosol. The assessment of shoot length, tree height and crown volume, based on the photographic method of the three increment assessments, showed very restrained growth of the studied limes. In the years 2006-2008 the trees performed so poorly as in similar period of 2003-2005 and grew worse than limes form natural habitats. In 2009 we even observed decrease in size of street trees as compared to 2008 which suggests both very bad condition of street habitats and the studied trees. Salt concentration measured on the surface of tree buds and shoots (EC) was higher in street trees than in trees from natural habitats, which indicates that saline aerosol is the source of sodium chloride. We observed highly diversified reactions of individual trees to the whole complex of street conditions. It is therefore recommended to select for propagation individuals from among most tolerant and vigorously growing plants (genotypes) to be used in street planting.

The aim of this study is to evaluate human thermal comfort in different green area settings in the city of Florence by using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). Field measurements of air temperature, solar radiation, relative humidity, wind speed and black globe thermometer were collected during hot summer days in various parts of Cascine Park, the biggest urban park in Florence (Italy). UTCI was evaluated over different surfaces (asphalt, gravel and grass) completely exposed to the sun or shaded by a large lime tree (Tilia × europaea). The results showed strong differences in UTCI values depending on the exposure to tree shade, while no significant difference was found among ground-cover materials when all surfaces were equally exposed to solar radiation. Future studies are needed to investigate the microclimatic effects of different tree species on UTCI.

Opis:
Exposure to airborne pollen allergens results in allergic symptoms in subjects who are sensitized. The paper presents diurnal variation in the counts of airborne allergenic pollen of selected trees (Betula L., Alnus Mill., Corylus L., Fagus L. and Ulmus L.) in two localities differing in the degree of urbanization: the city of Szczecin (urban) and the village of Gudowo, West Pomerania in northwest Poland (rural) in the years 2012–2014. The measurements were made by the volumetric method using a Burkardtype sampler operating in a continuous mode. The greatest similarities in the beginning of the main pollen season between the two sites studied were observed for birch and elm trees, while in the length of the main pollen season, for birch and alder trees. Pollen counts of alder and hazel reached higher levels in the rural area, while the levels of ash tree pollen counts were higher in the urban area. The level of birch tree pollen counts was similar in the two sites studied. For the majority of taxons observed in the urban and rural areas the dynamics of hourly changes in tree pollen counts were similar. The pollination peak was noted in the daytime, usually in the afternoon. For ash and elm trees increased pollen counts were observed at nighttime, while the birch tree pollen counts were at a high level for most of the 24 h cycle. The knowledge of seasonal and diurnal variations in tree pollen counts is crucial for prevention in patients with allergic rhinitis, sensitized to tree pollen allergens.

During the last several years, as a consequence of the greenhouse effect, an increasing number of storms was observed in Poland. Storms are often categorized as catastrophic. This article demonstrates the main factors leading to serious damage of trees. Breaking and falling down trees or branches causes significant property damages and may contribute to deaths. It would be possible to prevent some accidents if there were any diagnostic methods that could predict imminent fracture of trees. In many cases competent care is enough, especially in canopy pruning and planting planning. To reach this goal, it is necessary to raise public awareness in this field.

Opis:
Szczecin harbours Poland’s largest London plane tree population. The London plane trees growing in Szczecin’s Żeromski Park were subjected to dendroclimatological research (analyses of signature years and response function). The study was based on a composite site chronology, signed ZER, spanning 105 years (1900–2004); the mean annual tree ring growth was 2.59 mm. Precipitation, particularly that in late winter- early spring and in the summer months was found to be a factor decisive for the tree’s cambial activity. A high sum of precipitation during the periods mentioned induced positive growth responses in the trees. Thermal conditions during the growth period proved to be another factor controlling the annual tree ring growth, as shown by linear relationships. The tree ring growth-climate relationships in the population under study as well as the between-parks differences in the London plane tree response can be explained by differences in habitat conditions. The trees under study grow in the vicinity of a busy, frequently repaired street and are surrounded by pavement and/or hardened road surface, which greatly limits the infiltration of moisture supplied by precipitation.
