Opis:
The rapid inventions of social media in current era have changed the wellbeing of human lives. The current study aimed to explore the correlation between social media usage and undergraduate students’ psychological wellbeing in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Two research instruments were used in this study Social Media Addiction Scale-Student Form (SMAS-SF) and Flourishing Scale (FS). The first scale measures the usage capacity of social media and the second measures the psychological wellbeing of undergraduate students. The correlation between the scores obtained from the scales was determined by applying Pearson correlation formula. The positive correlation between social media usage and psychological wellbeing of undergraduate students has been found in this study. The other finding related to most preferred social media concluded that WhatsApp was most preferable social media among undergraduate students. 61% undergraduate students used the WhatsApp to engage their daily life in using social media.

Opis:
Various initiatives have been launched to encourage sociology students studying in the UK to engage more with quantitative research methods (for example: Dale et al., 2008; Adney and Carey, 2009; Falkingham et al., 2009), however, their success has been limited. Embedding quantitative methods in substantive sociology curricula has been suggested as one way to reduce students’ anxieties about learning quantitative research methods (Williams et al., 2015). This approach has been employed at Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences, where quantitative skills have been strategically incorporated into various aspects of a first year undergraduate substantive module. This paper will reflect on the experience of teaching on this module. The paper will conclude that while the introduction of quantitative content into substantive modules indicates support for change, embedding alone cannot be viewed as a single solution to encouraging to students’ to learn about or utilise quantitative research methods. Two possible reasons for this will be suggested. Firstly, it will be argued that the majority of students no longer pursue sociology at degree level in order to gain the skills to become a competent social researcher, but rather see sociology as a discipline that will equip them with transferable and desirable skills for many occupations. Consequently, engagement with quantitative research methods is not essential to students’ strategic approach to learning as it was for previous generations who wished to understand how to study their social world. Secondly, it will be suggested that the deficit of quantitative methods in mainstream British sociology journals and the methodological preferences of practicing sociologists leads to speculation over the available staff who are capable of delivering an integrated curriculum with quantitative methods embedded in substantive modules.

This research investigated international undergraduate students’ needs when adjusting to their new campus, academic and social life. The results from a significant survey of international students provided us with an evidence base to understand the improved student experience this cohort may seek in what will likely be a competitive environment for attracting international students post-COVID-19. While this case study has focused on one faculty, our findings are relevant to higher education institutions across disciplines, domestically and internationally.

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of using a virtual history strategy on the development of historical thinking skills among a sample of undergraduate classroom teachers from one public university located in the middle part of Jordan. To achieve this purpose, a historical thinking test was adapted from Al-Safadi (1999), and applied to one classroom with (54) students who studied Arab world history course during the 2016/2017academic year. The results of the study indicated significant differences (α = 0.05) between the pretest and posttest in the students’ historical thinking as a result of utilizing the virtual history approach. The study was concluded by proposing practical and theoretical recommendations for the field of study.

Opis:
Background: In recent years, the interest of Polish medical students in choosing a career in surgical subspecialties has been declining. In the face of a growing demand for surgical procedures it seems essential to find the reasons responsible for that situation. Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of interest in pursuing surgical careers among Polish medical students and to identify factors that may influence their decision. Material and methods: An anonymous questionnaire was distributed electronically among students from 11 different Polish medical universities. Results: We surveyed 595 individuals (190 male and 405 female). 48% of them declared interest in choosing surgical subspecialty as a career. The percentage of students who considered it before medical school was higher and reached almost 65%. Slight or no interest in surgery as a field of study (OR = 20.6), self-assessment of surgical predispositions as unsatisfactory (OR = 14.3), feeling unable to enter and accomplish surgical specialty (OR = 5.2), being discouraged by the partner (OR = 3.4), negative past experience with the surgical environment (OR = 3.2), not having a surgeon as a mentor (OR = 2.6), no authorship of journal articles or congress presentations (OR = 1.9) and first contact with the operating theatre >2nd year of study (OR = 1.9) were found to be the independent risk factors of abandoning a surgical career. Conclusions: Most medical students are interested in pursuing a surgical specialty at some time during their education. However, being discouraged by lifestyle issues, surgical training quality or experiencing gender discrimination, they often resign from such a career path.

Opis:
BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has forced the introduction of many changes into medical student education. The aim of the study was to evaluate medical students’ perceptions of a Pharmacology course delivered at a Polish medical university before and during the pandemic.Material and methodsA cross-sectional anonymous survey conducted among medical students.Results90 out 122 students participated in the study. The vast majority of students found pharmacology to be a difficult subject. The surveyed group of students preferred active methods of learning, including: teacher explanations (86.5%) and discussions (70.8%) during in-person classes, real-time student-teacher meetings via dedicated web-based platforms (73%) during online classes. Students most often described e-learning as interesting (58.9%) and timesaving (52.2%). Less than 30% described it as stressful, difficult, time-consuming and boring. The most commonly reported advantage was the possibility for students to adjust their pharmacology study-time to a more personalised schedule (82.5%). The main disadvantage included the loss of in-person face-to-face contact with the teacher (61.8%).ConclusionsOverall, students held positive attitudes towards the new teaching format and adapted well to the new conditions. Modern innovations enabling medical students to continue their studies efficiently and effectively during the pandemic must be developed and introduced into practice.

Opis:
IMC has been globally accepted as well as in Indonesia. Not just on practical aspects, but in academic domain since widely taught as a subject of undergraduate program in Indonesia. While literature review shows that conceptualization of IMC from various international publications still marked pros and cons, but a lesser amount of publications involve educators as one of stakeholders. Actually, educators are avant-garde of IMC deployment to the next generation and their authority in defining IMC in the classroom. In order to recognize the development of IMC thought, acceptance, and its variations of meaning, it is important to analysis the IMC syllabus as a manifestation of educator thought. To get widely perspective, these results should be compared and linked with perceptions of educators who teach IMC or other relevant subjects. Therefore, this study aims to determine how educator’ perceptions of IMC concept that has been built over time in various international publications, and how IMC defined in syllabus as a manifestation of educator’ understanding. This study uses mixed method, where the perception of educators measured quantitatively by conducting survey of 51 respondents. Meanwhile, syllabus analyzed qualitatively. Both results are then compared and linked to answer research questions.

Introduction: Although fundamental issues of clinical neurophysiology constitute a part of standard education of students at physiotherapy faculties, the graduates from these faculties do not associate their professional and/or scientific career with this category of clinical diagnostic studies. These diagnostic tools, however, are very important for neurorehabilitation. Thus, students are not trained by professional clinical neurophysiologists. Problems related to clinical neurophysiology are implemented in different study and training contents that disintegrate transfer of knowledge and are harmful for the rank of clinical neurophysiology in the environment of physiotherapists.Aim of the study: To show that, in conformance with the standards of physiotherapy education, there is a need to teach clinical neurophysiology as a separate subject and that there are possibilities to reliably utilise the existing infrastructural and financial potential to introduce the lectures and practical training of clinical neurophysiology into the physiotherapy faculties curricula.Study form: to perform an initial assessment to estimate: 1. which issues of clinical neurophysiology are implemented in core standards of education of the physiotherapy faculty students; 2. in which and how many of the country districts medical or physical education universities and other public or private high schools have faculties of physiotherapy; 3. in which districts, bordered territorially by these schools, there are establishments licensed to conduct training in clinical neurophysiology; 4. what type of scientific status do persons certified in clinical neurophysiology have, who are listed in the districts with physiotherapy faculties. 5. how many persons among physicians and physical culture teachers receive scientific degrees for research in clinical neurophysiology associated with rehabilitation and physiotherapy. Conclusions: There is a need, infrastructure and financial support to include clinical neurophysiology into the curricula of the physiotherapy undergraduate education.

Opis:
The present study aims to investigate the efficacy of the collaborative learning method on the translation skills of students at the undergraduate level through a new model developed by the researchers. To this end, a pre-/post-test control group research design was followed to obtain empirical results in the translation of medical texts. The study group consisted of 60 undergraduate translation students in Turkey. Thirty students in the control group were instructed by using conventional training methods and each student worked individually. The completed translation was then evaluated by the instructor, as commonly applied in undergraduate translation programmes. The other 30 subjects in the experimental group were instructed through the collaborative learning method. The students participated in teamwork and undertook various roles such as terminologists, translators, proof-readers, and peer editors to check the final work. At the end of the three-week training, the difference between the translation performance scores of the two groups was found statistically significant in favour of the experimental group. The findings demonstrate the significant contribution of the collaborative learning method to the undergraduate students as this method provides them with an environment to improve the necessary translation skills for their future careers in terms of adopting different roles other than translators.

The contribution presents results of the non-hierarchical cluster analysis of academic performance and aspects of achievement motivation of a sample of undergraduate students. The Achievement Motivation Questionnaire (AMQ) (Dotazník motivácie výkonu, Pardel, Maršálová, Hrabovská, 1984) was used as the research method. School success was established using the arithmetic mean of study results of 213 undergraduate students after completion of a term. In the AMQ, the Achievement Motive variable was focused on, consisting of the following aspects: achievementoriented behaviour, aspiration level, persever- ance at work, and future time orientation. The main aim of our research was to determine undergraduate student types by their academic performance and aspects of achievement motive. Based on the assessment of generated three to six-cluster solutions, the six-cluster solution appeared optimal, within which the following types of undergraduate students were identified: type of unused potential, unbalanced type, balanced type, type unoriented in time, academi- cally indifferent type, and industrious type.
