Opis:
This article presents the strength and modal analysis of the rotor model of the Tesla micro-turbine. The calculations were made in order to verify the design of multi-disc turbine’s rotor before production process. Two commercial solvers were used independently, which are capable to deal with problems of solid state physics – Abaqus and Ansys Mechanical with Workbench software. The comparison of results from two applications aimed at checking solvers’ applicability in the present case. Preliminary analysis was carried out in Abaqus software. The calculations were performed assuming perfect bearing stiffness for different rotation speeds. A more detailed analysis was made in Ansys Mechanical software using structure analysis modules to determine the stresses in the structure which arise as a consequence of rotor’s rotational motion. Subsequently, it was followed up with modal analysis results. Additionally the parameters of selected bearings were determined and modal analysis took into account the stiffness corresponding to individual rolling bearings.
W niniejszej artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy wytrzymałościowej i dynamicznej prototypu modelu wirnika mikroturbiny Tesli. Analizy zostały przeprowadzone w celu sprawdzenia i weryfikacji projektu wielodyskowego wirnika turbiny Tesli przed etapem produkcyjnym.

Opis:
The article presents reasons for generating a non-uniform field of parameters in the compressor inlet of a turbine aircraft engine and its influence on the air jet kinematics at lowering fatigue strength of the compressor blade. Analysis of the engine torque in function of the engine operation time has been performed. Courses of the basic turbine engine operations parameters during compressor stall have been presented. The significant role of changes of the first torque derivative in relation to variation of the rotor acceleration in that assessment has been determined, which may be an important signal of the compressor surge occurring in the compressor. That parameter may be a signal for the control system to eliminate the negative phenomenon. The engine dynamics during the compressor surge has also been presented by developing the phase images of the engine operation basic parameters. The article includes analysis of dynamical changes in temperature of the combustion gases.

Numerical analysis of the inlet flow of aircraft turbine powerplant has been performed. The analysis has been focused on thermal conditions in view of the expected inlet icing phenomena. A commercial CFD Fluent package has been utilized in developing the model and solving the stated problem. The modelled system was a TW2-117A engine inlet of Mi-8P helicopter. Calculations of 2-D axisymmetric compressible viscous flow have been conducted. The modelled medium has been assumed of the air thermophysical properties. At the present stage effects the moist content and two-phase flow have been neglected. The calculations complemented results of previous theoretical analyses and experimental measurements with images of the temperature and the flow velocity distribution. The maximum temperature drop has been estimated to be at last -4 K close to the external inlet wall and about -5 K close to the central body. The boundary layer parameters have been identified applying several standard models of turbulence. The qualitative image of icing flow conditions has been verified and confirmed.

This paper discusses the results of the CFD simulation of the flow around Vertical Axis Wind Turbine rotor. The examined rotor was designed following patent application no. 402214. The turbine operation is characterised by parameters, such as opening angle of blades, power, torque, rotational velocity at a given wind velocity. Those parameters have an impact on the performance of entire assembly. The distribution of forces acting on the working surfaces in the turbine can change, depending on the angle of rotor rotation. Moreover, the resultant force derived from the force acting on the oncoming and leaving blades should be as high as possible. Accordingly, those parameters were individually simulated over time for each blade in three complete rotations. The attempts to improve the performance of the entire system resulted in a new research trend to improve the performance of working turbine rotor blades.

This paper presents experimental investigations which made it possible to determine dynamic coefficients of labyrinth over-shroud seal of a model air turbine. The coefficients associate pressure forces with turbine rotor displacement, velocity and acceleration respective to turbine casing (linear model) and play important role in analyzing turbine-set dynamics. The obtained results indicated that involving serious errors can be expected in the case of application of the simplification consisting in neglecting inertia coefficients, proposed in the literature. It was simultaneously demonstrated that seals can be also met of weak damping qualities, for which to neglect damping coeffcients is allowable.

To harness the endless hydrokinetic energy of the Kuroshio current, the joint research team of the National Taiwan University and the National Taiwan Ocean University has developed a floating Kuroshio turbine (FKT) system in Taiwan. In normal operation, the system floats at a certain small depth from the ocean surface to reduce the wave effects and take advantage of faster current speeds. In the present study, the effect of the mooring line on the system dynamics is investigated computationally. Two different auxiliary mooring line designs and, for each design, three different common mooring lines (polyester ropes of neutral buoyancy, iron chains, and 6×19 wires ropes with wire core) are examined. The study makes use of several commercial and in-house packages, integrated to find various coefficients. It is found that the mooring line, the auxiliary mooring line design, and the gravity centre can have a significant effect on system fluctuations in normal operation if the combination of these factors is not properly matched.

Opis:
New concept of innovative, high-efficiency wind turbine has been developed and optimised. The turbine consists of a rotor with a vertical axis of rotation and a ring-palisade casing, which task is to deflect wind stream so that it flows perpendicularly to the rotor plane. The main advantage of such configuration of a wind turbine is that due to the vertical axis of symmetry, it works independently on the wind direction and it does not need any mechanism directing it towards the wind. The greatest challenge when designing the turbine was to minimise losses of energy of the wind stream deflected by 90 degrees by the ring vanes of the casing. This involved optimisation of number, shapes and mutual positions of the ring vanes. The whole optimisation works were done based on computational methods of Computer-Aided Design and Optimisation and Computational Fluid Dynamic. Subsequent variants of the ring-palisade casing were designed using an appropriately adapted in-house-software package supporting design and optimisation of multi-element airfoils. Three-dimensional analysis of flow around and inside the casing was conducted by application of commercial URANS solver ANSYS FLUENT. Eventually designed turbine is characterised by high efficiency in respect of acceleration of the wind stream. On the basis of computer simulations, it is estimated that the average velocity of air stream flowing through the rotor plane may be higher than the wind speed by about 45%. Extent of the acceleration of the wind stream partially depends on the number of ring vanes comprising a casing. Depending on specificity of application, this number of ring vanes may be chosen by a compromise between performance and dimensions of the turbine. The proposed wind turbine seems to be very promising solution, especially within the area of small and moderate renewable-energy sources, which in particular may be placed directly in residential-building areas, e.g. on the roofs of houses. This type of renewable-energy sources may also be successfully used in the field of environmentally friendly transport, in the process of producing hydrogen as fuel for fuel cell vehicles.

Research regarding blade design and analysis of flow has been attracting interest for over a century. Meanwhile new concepts and design approaches were created and improved. Advancements in information technologies allowed to introduce computational fluid dynamics and computational flow mechanics. Currently a combination of mentioned methods is used for the design of turbine blades. These methods enabled us to improve flow efficiency and strength of turbine blades. This paper relates to a new type turbine which is in the phase of theoretical analysis, because the working fluid is a mixture of steam and gas generated in a wet combustion chamber. The main aim of this paper is to design and analyze the flow characteristics of the last stage of gas-steam turbine. When creating the spatial model, the atlas of profiles of reaction turbine steps was used. Results of computational fluid dynamics simulations of twisting of the last stage are presented. Blades geometry and the computational mesh are also presented. Velocity vectors, for selected dividing sections that the velocity along the pitch diameter varies greatly. The blade has the shape of its cross-section similar to action type blades near the root and to reaction type blades near the tip. Velocity fields and pressure fields show the flow characteristics of the last stage of gas-steam turbine. The net efficiency of the cycle is equal to 52.61%.

Local wind conditions can vary strongly depending on the landmark and vegetation, as well as on the skyline of the buildings in an urban surrounding. Weather, season and time of day influence the yield of electric power. In order to promote the use of small wind turbines as an alternative to photovoltaic power generation, design optimization for location-optimized small wind turbines was carried out. In this work, we want to concentrate on vertical axis wind turbines. Experimental studies, as well as numerical simulations, have been conducted. On the one hand, bionically optimized core structures will be integrated and implemented in the hybrid material of the turbine blades. Several optimization attempts have been examined for single blades. Detailed simulative investigations with large eddy simulations improve the aerodynamic behaviour of the new rotor design. Finally, based on the results of the studies and investigations, a new rotor will be manufactured and tested experimentally in the wind tunnel. A comparison with the reference system from the first part of the paper shows the improvements and effectiveness of the measures and processes investigated.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of fluid flow simulations carried out by means of the FIDAP7.6 program (a fluid dynamics FEM package) for the case of radial inflow onto a rotating shaft. The particular geometric configuration has been chosen to resemble a generalized inlet chamber of twin low-pressure steam turbines, but with the axial outlet section extended to allow better observation of flow instabilities in that region. The calculations were carried out for the same channel geometry for both compressible and incompressible flow, using the same or slightly varying boundary conditions. Extensive variation in non-physical parameters of the model was explored, such as applying different meshes over the region, as well as utilizing different turbulence and upwinding models. The intent of this research was to evaluate the relative applicability of the various available flow models to the simulation of axisymmetric flows with steep velocity gradients, and to discover the limitations of these models. The calculations have in fact established significant differences in the behavior of the simulated flow for the different meshes and models. Some results were characterized by extensive areas of recirculating flow whereas others, for the same boundary conditions, showed no recirculation. Correct near-wall meshing as well as the choice of the upwinding scheme were established as the critical factors in this regard. There was also noticeable variation in outlet velocity profiles. An extensive zone of separation within the investigated channel as well as a standing annular vortex near the point of stagnation are flow features of some interest. These patterns of flow change in response to the changing non-physical parameters; the separation zone in particular is absent or slow to develop under some setups. The influence of inflow parameters, the initial velocity distribution and turbulent intensity in particular, on flow behavior in contact with the rotating shaft have also been an area of investigation, as these are often defined with considerable uncertainty in practical applications. It was observed that some latitude in assuming these parameters did not significantly alter the relevant flow parameters at outlet (the velocity and pressure distributions), although it did induce variation in other aspects of the flow (such as the extent of the standing vortex).

Opis:
The main purpose of this article is to verify and validate the mathematical description of the airflow around a wind turbine with vertical axis of rotation, which could be considered as representative for this type of devices. Mathematical modeling of the airflow around wind turbines in particular those with the vertical axis is a problematic matter due to the complex nature of this highly swirled flow. Moreover, it is turbulent flow accompanied by a rotation of the rotor and the dynamic boundary layer separation. In such conditions, the key aspects of the mathematical model are accurate turbulence description, definition of circular motion as well as accompanying effects like centrifugal force or the Coriolis force and parameters of spatial and temporal discretization. The paper presents the impact of the different simulation parameters on the obtained results of the wind turbine simulation. Analysed models have been validated against experimental data published in the literature.

Opis:
Small-scale vertical-axis wind turbines can be used as a source of electricity in rural and urban environments. According to the authors’ knowledge, there are no validated simplified aerodynamic models of these wind turbines, therefore the use of more advanced techniques, such as for example the computational methods for fluid dynamics is justified. The paper contains performance analysis of the small-scale vertical-axis wind turbine with a large solidity. The averaged velocity field and the averaged static pressure distribution around the rotor have been also analyzed. All numerical results presented in this paper are obtained using the SST k- ω turbulence model. Computed power coefficients are in good agreement with the experimental results. A small change in the tip speed ratio significantly affects the velocity field. Obtained velocity fields can be further used as a base for simplified aerodynamic methods.

Opis:
The goal of this study is to preliminary assess the wind resources on the Szubieniczne Hill in order to predict the annual energy production for planned small wind turbine. The analyzed site is located close to the Gdańsk University of Technology campus, in complex urban environment additionally surrendered by forested hills. The assessment is based on Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations which allow to evaluate the wind energy potential on the entire area of interest. Simulations are integrated with a long-term local wind measurements from nearby AARMAG weather mast. The study provides micro-scale wind maps of the analyzed area which are then used to a calculation of annual energy production and to proposed wind turbine located at the hill costeffectiveness evaluation.
W artykule przedstawiono wstępną ocenę zasobów energetycznych wiatru dla Wzgórza Szubienicznego. Wyniki symulacji zostały wykorzystane do estymacji rocznej produkcji energii dla proponowanej małej turbiny wiatrowej typu SWP25kW. Analizowana lokalizacja znajduje się w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie Laboratorium Innowacyjnych Technologii Elektroenergetycznych i Integracji Odnawialnych Źródeł Energii LINTE^2, proponowana turbina miałaby uzupełnić infrastrukturę badawczą laboratorium.

Opis:
Nuclear power plants play an important role in power systems of many countries. Ability to reasonable increase installed capacity of nuclear power units allow to reduce the cost for building of new power plants. When increasing NPP capacity to 104% there is a need to estimate the residual life of plant’s typical elements and continue their operation. The mathematical model of estimation of service life indicators of steam turbine K-1000-60/3000 is developed. The effect of increasing the capacity of a nuclear reactor on the heat transfer coefficients of a steam in the nozzle segments of high-pressure cylinder was established by using CFD modeling. The thermal and stress-strain state of the high-pressure rotor for the most typical operating modes are calculated. Using the correlation dependences of low-cycle fatigue, the rate of accumulation of cyclic damage of the base metal is established. The resistance of the metal to the exhaustion of long-term strength is also determined. On the example of the high pressure rotor of the 3rd power unit of Rivne NPP the service life indicators are calculated. The validity of increasing the installed capacity of the power unit was also confirmed.

Opis:
Although gear teeth give lots of advantages, there is a high possibility of failure in gear teeth in each gear stage in the drive train system. In this research, the authors developed proper gear teeth using the basic theorem of gear failure and reliability-based design optimization. A design variable characterized by a probability distribution was applied to the static stress analysis model and the dynamics analysis model to determine an objective function and constraint equations and to solve the reliability-based design optimization. For the optimization, the authors simulated the torsional drive train system which includes rotational coordinates. First, the authors established a static stress analysis model which gives information about endurance limit and bending strength. By expressing gear mesh stiffness in terms of the Fourier series, the equations of motion including the gear mesh models and kinematical relations in the drive train system were acquired in the form of the Lagrange equations and constraint equations. For the numerical analysis, the Newmark Beta method was used to get dynamic responses including gear mesh contact forces. From the results such as the gear mesh contact force, the authors calculated the probability of failure, arranged each probability and gear teeth, and proposed a reasonable and economic design of gear teeth.
