Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the trophism of soils in the strict nature protection area using the soil trophic index (SIG). The ‘Rybitew’ strict protection area (224.2 ha, created in 1965), is located in the north−eastern part of the Kampinos National Park (central Poland). The results of field and laboratory studies of the physicochemical and chemical properties of soils made it possible to determine their trophism by the SIG index. In the ‘Rybitew’ strict protection area, significant typological diversity of soils (10 subtypes) was found. The soils belong to the following trophic groups determined by the SIG: mixed coniferous forests (BM), mixed broadleaved forests (LM), alder forest (swamp broadleaved forest site) (Ol) and soil developed from low and transitional peatlands. The average value and range of SIG for particular trophic groups was: 19 (15−23) for BM, 26 (25−28) for LM, 34 for Ol was well as 23 for organic soil developed from low peatland and 21 for organic soil made from transitional peatland. Most of the ‘Rybitew’ area is covered by Podzols, Brunic Arenosols and Luvisol occurring in the trophic group of BM and LM. A lot of the soils undergo acidification process, which leads to a reduction in their trophism due to the excessive share of pine in the stand. This causes the podzolization process of Luvisols and significant acidification of the upper horizons, high C:N value and the moder type ectohumus formation, especially in Haplic Gleysols and Haplic Phaeozems. The large typological and trophic diversity of soils and the vegetation covering them in the ‘Rybitew’ strict protection area confirm the rightness of its creation.

Opis:
The study was carried out using water samples from two small retention reservoirs located in the communes: Czarna Białostocka and Turośń Kościelna in Podlaskie Voivodeship. The main tasks of both reservoirs are to improve the water balance by means of regulating the levels and water outflow. Three characteristic measurement and control points were selected on both reservoirs in accordance to the water flow in the longitudinal section. The first and third points were located near the inflow and outflow of water, while the second in the middle of the reservoirs. Samples of water for the study were collected from the surface layer of the shore zone of the reservoirs once a month from March 2015 to February 2017 (water from two hydrological years was analyzed). Water samples were subject to determination of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and chlorophyll “a” concentrations, as well as turbidity. Contamination of the water reservoirs with biogenic compounds is a common problem and at the same time difficult to eliminate due to the scattered nature of external sources of pollution, especially in the case of agricultural catchments, as well as the inflow of untreated sewage from areas directly adjacent to the reservoirs. Based on achieved results, high values of TSI (TN), TSI (TP), TSI (Chl), and overall TSI, clearly indicate the progressive degradation of water quality in analyzed reservoirs. Appearing water blooms due to the mass development of phytoplankton adversely affect the quality of water in the reservoirs and biochemical processes occurring both in water and bottom sediments, are conditioned by progressive eutrophication.

Opis:
The paper presents the evaluation of trophic status of Lake Niepruszewskie in the years 1994–2013. This is the first lake in the Samica Stęszewska river, flowing dis-tally through the lakes of the Wielkopolski National Park. Source part of the Samica Stęszewska river basin was, in the years 2004–2012, included to the nitrate vulnerable zone (NVZ), and Niepruszewskie Lake was considered to be threatened by eutrophication. The evaluation of trophic status of the lake was made based on the concentration of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and indicators of eutrophication (chlorophyll a, water transparency Secchi disk marked) by referring them to the limit values for the eutrophication of surface waters as defined in the Regulation of the Minister of Environment of 23 December 2002 and other criteria used for the classification of the eutrophication of surface waters. Detailed and synthetic indexes of the trophic status (TSI) using the formula Carlson and the ratio of N:P were also made. Concentrations of the nutrients in Lake Niepruszewskie and eutrophication indexes reached high values, indicating a eutrophic or hypertrophic state of the lake. Detailed values of the trophic status index (TSI), on average over the period, corresponded to eutrophic, while in subsequent years they were varied – from mesotrophic to hypertrophic. The worst trophic status was recorded in 2003–2006, after the lowering of the lake dam-ming. The high value of N: P ratio indicates that the lake has huge surplus of nitrogen, and phosphorus is a productivity limiting factor.

This paper will focus on determining the trophic status of the two basins of the Niwa Reservoir – Niwa I and Niwa II (Sawin commune, Lubelskie Province, SE Poland) at the sixth year of operation, by using partial TSI indexes – TSI(SD), TSI(TP), TSI(chl-a), as well as qualitative and quantitative structures of phytoplankton. As a supplementary, index TSI(TOC) was employed. We show that the phytoplankton abundance, as well as TSI(chl-a) and TSI(TP) were relatively low and typical for mesotrophic waters (with the exception of July TSI(TP) values for the Niwa II basin), although the evaluation of trophy based on other partial TSI indexes – TSI(SD), TSI(TOC) pointed to a eutrophic or even a hypertrophic water characteristic. The obtained results were discussed in detail and referenced to other, non-nutrient related trophy factors: morphometric features and geology of the basins, as well as the physicochemical properties of its water.

Opis:
Studies upon the trophic status were carried out using water samples from a small retention reservoir Topiło located in a particularly valuable natural forests of Puszcza Białowieska. In order to assess the degree of Topiło reservoir contamination, three measurement and control points were selected for testing, which were situated near the inflow (point No. 1) and outflow (point No. 3) of river Perebel, as well as in the middle part of the reservoir (point No. 2). The selection and placement of measurement and control points on the reservoir was dictated by the ability to capture changes in the study object. Tests of water samples collected from the surface layer of the coastal zone, were carried out once a month during the period from April 2007 to March 2014. The following determinations in collected water samples were performed: total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chlorophyll “a”, and turbidity. The trophic level of Topiło reservoir was also assessed according to the concentration criteria and based on the trophic status indices (TSI) calculated after Carlson’s as well as Kratzer and Brezonik’s. Given the annual average value of overall trophic level (Trophic Sta-tus Index), the dominant role of the TSI (TP) during all years of research attracts some attention. The TSI index values ranged within 78.3–80.26, which allowed to classify the water of Topiło reservoir as hypertrophic. The research indicates an advanced and constantly progressive degradation of water quality in Topiło reservoir. Values of TSI (Chl) were in the range of 49.2–77.35 and therefore water status in winter can be defined as eutrophic indicating the hypertrophy in remaining periods under study. Additional investments planned for advance reclamation treatments should be necessarily taken into consideration at the stage of planning and design of new small water retention reservoirs. Topiło reservoir requires modernization and reclamation, it is also necessary to clean it up, especially the bottom pond, out of the stocked wood residues, as well as to remove the excess of sludge.

An analysis of influence of urban wastewater from Sitkowka Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kielce on water quality and trophic state of the Bobrza river was performed in the period before and after the plant modernization. The wastewater treatment plant effectiveness analysis was determined in 2006 and 2012 (prior to modernization and after modernization, respectively) in terms of basic pollution indicators and with the main focus on biogenic matter. The trophic state of the river was assessed at cross-sections above and below the wastewater discharge point, before and after modernization, on the basis of an integral criterion, index of trophic state (ITS). The research results showed a positive effect of wastewater treatment plant modernization on the recipient water quality. Reduction of risk of eutrophication occurring before the modernization was demonstrated as well as the improvement from eutrophic to meso-eutrophic state.

Opis:
The study aimed at comparing changes in the trophic status of waters in two small retention reservoirs “Otapy-Kiersnówek” and “Jasionówka”, located in the Podlasie region, which have a similar way of management and the similarity of catchments, using the TSI trophy indicators. The obtained results show that total phosphorus is the limiting factor in both reservoirs. Analyzing the average annual value of TSI in the tested waters, it was found that both reservoirs can be classified as hypertrophic. Trophic state of the tested waters is strictly dependent on the processes taking place in their vicinity. The reservoirs revealed a clear effect of a surface runoff on water quality. Factors that favor the poor quality of water in both reservoirs are unfavorable morphometric conditions of reservoirs due to their small depth, which allows continuous mixing and strong heating of water in spring and summer. Additional causes can include an open space around the reservoirs and the lack of high vegetation that would shield the edges against the wind, which facilitates often mixing of waters to the bottom and resuspension of bottom sediments, which in turn increases the concentration of phosphorus in water.

W ocenie wykorzystano normy określone w polskich przepisach prawnych, wskaźnik Carlsona (TSI - Trophic State Index), wskaźnik Neverovej-Dziopak (ITS - Index of Trophical State) oraz normy zalecane przez Organizację Współpracy Gospodarczej i Rozwoju (OECD).
Water resource protection requires water quality monitoring and assessment. It pertains in particular to mountainous regions with a strategic importance for water supply - a serious threat is posed by nutrients, which cause eutrophication. The main sources of nutrients in mountainous areas are: inappropriate farming methods, erosive run-offs, as well as ineffective wastewater treatment. The aim of the research project was to identify the condition of water resources in cascade dam reservoirs located on the river Sola (reservoirs: Tresna, Porabka, Czaniec). The reservoirs are located in the Polish Carpathians. The combined capacity of the reservoirs in question amounts to about 122 million m3 and their catchment areas cover the area of 1,119 km2. The water resources collected are used for residential and municipal purposes. The degree of eutrophication was established on the basis of physical and chemical parameters of the river Sola and the reservoir water. The assessment referenced the norms specified in the Polish law, Carlson index (TSI - Trophic State Index), Neverova-Dziopak index (ITS Index of Trophical State) as well as Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) norms. The analyses conducted in 2007-2009, revealed that the quality of water resources retained complied with the characteristic parameters of mesotrophic and eutrophic state. Whereby, the least favourable trophic state was identified in the lowest reservoir in the cascade - Czaniec reservoir. The findings imply that the cascade catchment should be managed in such a way that less polluted surface waters are released into the area.

Opis:
Destruction of natural water bodies due to cultural eutrophication is a predominant problem in India. Motijheel Lake of Murshidabad district is an environmentally, economically and historically significant water body. However, Anthropogenic activities including unplanned settlements around this lake and its over exploitation have deteriorated its water quality to a great extent. Motijheel Lake acts as a sink for domestic sewage, human and animal excreta. Surface runoffs are discharged into the lake which further adds to the list of pollutants. High phosphate, nitrate and nitrite-Nitrogen and chlorophyll content of the lake categorizes it as hypereutrophic one. Also, the amount of phosphate, nitrite and iron present in Motijheel Lake exceed the permissible limit in drinking water, as prescribed by US Environmental Protection Agency and Bureau of Indian Standards. When the Below Poverty Line residents of the surrounding area consume such water, they become susceptible to various fatal diseases. The low level of Dissolved Oxygen in the lake water signifies huge amount of organic matter deposited in the lake and indicates the lake water to be poor in quality. The high load of coliform bacteria in the lake water further corroborates the deposition of domestic, human and animal wastes. If water with such high concentration of faecal coliform is consumed, it could lead to fatal gastrointestinal and enteric diseases.

Podobne obniżanie wartości odnotowano również w odniesieniu do dwóch pozostałych indeksów TSI(CHL) i TSI(SD) określanych w oparciu o stężenie chlorofilu a i widzialności krążka Secchiego. Pomimo to Zbiornik Sulejowski pozostawał akwenem zeutrofizowanym.
The goal of the article was to assess changes of the Carlson trophic state index in the Sulejow Reservoir. Inflow and outflow regions water quality during vegetative months of the period of 1999-2009 were taken into consideration. Carlson index uses algal biomass as the basis for trophic state classification. Three variables, chlorophyll pigments, Secchi disc depth and total phosphorus, allow to estimate algal biomass. Results of the study showed that trophic state indicated slight improvement of water quality. Water quality was also improved as a result of its retention in the reservoir. TSI(TP) based on the total phosphorus concentration measurements in the inflow region showed a decreaseing from 87 in 2001 to about 68 in 2007 and in the outflow region form 80 in 2001 to about 67 in 2007. Similar decreaseing was also observed for TSI(CHL) and TSI(SD) indices. Descripte this, Sulejow Reservoir was generally an eutrophicated water body.

The objective of the study was to assess the trophic state of water in the hydrographic system of the Sola cascade, situated in the Carpathian region in southern Poland. Analyses included inflowing and retained water in dam reservoirs: Tresna, Porabka and Czaniec. The level of eutrophication of water was estimated basing on its physicochemical parameters. Out of all methods used in determining the trophic state, the selected methods included the norms determined in the Polish regulations, the Neverova-Dziopak index (ITS – Index of Trophical State) and the Carlson index (TSI – Trophic State Index). Analyses of data from years 2007–2009 showed that water quality reflected characteristic parameters for mesotrophy and eutrophy. Unfavorable trophic state concerned almost all waters that were studied, including waters of the lowest reservoir of the cascade – Czaniec reservoir, which is part of the municipal water supply system. That emphasizes the need for protection of the catchment of the cascade with regards to reduction of contamination load discharged to surface waters.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine the impact of selected soil properties on site index of oak (Quercus sp.) stands in the Międzyrzec Forest District (eastern Poland). We utilised data from the soil−habitat survey, which provided information about physical and chemical properties of soils and stand descriptions for 21 oak stands (tab. 1). The collected data served to determine site index (SI), defined as the stand top−height at the age of 100, and soil trophic index (SIG) that is a synthetic measure of the soil fertility. For SI and SIG distributions met the criteria of the normal distribution (Shapiro−Wilk test p−values equalled 0.118 and 0.297, respectively), we applied one−way analysis of variance, t−test and correlation analysis to determine the influence of the forest habitat type and moisture as well as soil properties and fertility measures on the site index of analysed oaks. The SI of investigated oaks ranged from 23.2 to 29.3 m, 26.5 m on average (tab. 2). It was significantly dependent on the site type (F=6.913, p=0.006) with the lowest values on oligotrophic habitat and the highest – on eutrophic one. No effect of habitat moisture content and soil type was found (t=–0.408, p=0.688 and F=2.599, p=0.076, respectively). The SIG values ranged from 20 to 36, with the average of 29.5 (tab. 2). Similarly to the site index, we found significant impact of the forest habitat type (F=5.384, p=0.015) on SIG values. Soil fertility and physical properties significantly influenced site index of the analysed oaks (fig.). We found positive correlation between SI and SIG values (r=0.566, p=0.007) as well as between SI and clay content (r=0.454, p=0.037). Chemical properties of the soils under studied stands seem to have less profound effect on site index of oak. The highest, but insignificant, correlations were found for recalculated acidity (r=–0.420, p=0.056) and magnesium content (r=0.400, p=0.071).

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the trophic status of five restored shallow lakes from a group of 30 water bodies in the Olsztyn Lakeland, which were dried in the 19th century as part of a land reclamation program. The effectiveness of the Integrated Trophic State Index (ITS) in the evaluation process was analyzed. ITS is a relatively new method for diagnosing eutrophication intensity. It analyzes the balance between production processes and organic matter decomposition through simultaneous measurements of oxygen saturation and pH of water. ITS is a versatile tool which can be applied in various types of water bodies. In this study, it was used to evaluate shallow water bodies characterized by excessive phosphorus loads and susceptibility to blue-green algal blooms in summer. During a three-year study carried out in 2010–2012, significant correlations were observed between %O2 and pH, which is a basic prerequisite for applying the ITS method. In the analyzed water bodies, correlation coefficients were determined in the range of r = 0.68–0.83. ITS values varied in successive years ITS (from 7.73 to 8.67), ranging from eutrophy to hypertrophy. Most ITS scores were consistent with the values of Carlson’s TSI, which indicates that used integrated trophic state index, based on the values of water pH and oxygen saturation, accurately reflect the ecological status of degraded water bodies.
W pracy podjęto próbę oceny stanu troficznego pięciu płytkich zbiorników, należących do grupy około 30 obiektów Pojezierza Olsztyńskiego, współcześnie odtworzonych po osuszeniu dokonanym w XIX w. W szczególności przeanalizowano możliwość zastosowania integralnego wskaźnika troficzności (Index of Trophical State – ITS).

Opis:
The aim of the study was to apply the forest soil trophic index (ITGL) in the assessment of post−agricultural soil under naturally regenerated silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) stands. The study was conducted in Mazowieckie region (central Poland) in 10 locations (tab. 1). In each location we established 4 study plots with naturally regenerated silver birch of different age. The age of the investigated stands ranged from 2 to 17 years. On each study plot samples from three upper soil horizons (0−5 cm, 5−15 cm and 15−50 cm) were collected for laboratory analysis. The following characteristics were determined in the soil samples: pH, organic carbon (C) and total nitrogen (N) content, particle size and the content of exchangeable base cations (Ca, Mg, Na and K). These soil characteristics were on used for ITGL calculation. Chemical properties of soils under silver birch regeneration varied with regard to trees age, whereas physical attributes turned to be rather stabile over the time (tab. 2). According to ITGL value investigated soils were classified as eutrophic. It is probably the effect of high base cations content, which is a result of systematic fertilization during the long term agricultural use. The insignificantly different ITGL values for the studied soils (tab. 3) indicated their similarity in terms of site productivity potential and soil−geological characteristics. The soil properties, especially the quality of soil organic matter described with C/N ratio, improved several years after the cessation of agricultural activity and spontaneous afforestation. The obtained results indicate that silver birch can be used in the stand composition on post−agricultural areas.

Opis:
The morphology and properties of the post−arable soils that influence the trophic status of forest habitats on the Barycz river terraces (south−western Poland) were analyzed. The fieldwork included the characterization of the soil, tree layer, and the vegetation of the forest floor, as required for the forest habitat evaluation. In the collected soil samples, a set of physico−chemical analysis was carried out, that included: soil texture, bulk density, pH in KCl and water, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, hydrolytic acidity, base cations, and the content of plant−available phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium. Sandy post−arable soils in the Barycz valley have a thick, double− or triple−layered ploughed humus horizon, and the high stock of humified organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus, that emphasizes anthropogenic transformation of soils and differentiates them from the natural soils of river valleys. The diagnosis based on the soil trophic index (SIG) indicates generally lower trophic status (mesotrophic) as compared to the diagnoses based on forest floor vegetation and tree−stand (eutrophic status). The SIG model for the post−agrar moist valley habitats should be supplemented with the factors, which improve the apparent trophic status of sandy soils, including the thick humus horizon (post−ploughing) and shallow table of eutrophic ground water.
