This study examines the evolution and impact of Italian associations abroad in the context of recent emigration trends. Italian migration has diversified in profiles, motivations, and paths since 2008, challenging traditional analysis models. Italian associations, which historically supported emigrant integration and cultural identity preservation, now adapt to new emigrant generations and skilled professionals. Using data from various Italian and international sources, the research highlights the associations' roles in legal, professional, and emotional support, particularly through digital technologies. Case studies from Argentina and China illustrate their critical functions during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings emphasize the associations' importance in maintaining cultural ties and providing practical assistance, underscoring their relevance in a globalized world. In recent decades, Italy has witnessed a significant increase in emigration, reflecting social, cultural and economic transformations in an increasingly complex global context. Recently, academic interest in the analysis of Italian emigration has grown, focusing on the quantitative and qualitative changes of the phenomenon. According to the Ministry of Foreign Aafirs and International Cooperation (MAECI), more than six million seven hundred thousand Italian citizens resided abroad on 30 December 2022 (MAECI, 2023: 185). Extensive field research has been conducted to understand the factors and dynamics influencing Italians' migration decisions, going beyond the traditional 'push and pull' model of analysis and considering both the conditions that limit mobility and the incentives for it (Pugliese, 2018). The 'new Italian emigration' which has originated from Italy since 2008, diefrs from previous waves in the variety of migratory profiles, the diversification of motivations and the complexity of individual migration paths. Opis:
Growing demand for a highly skilled workforce in a knowledge- and technology-based economy stimulates the recruitment of international professionals, resulting in their increased participation in the total volume of international migrants. However, little scholarly attention has been paid to their integration strategies and migration trajectories. Drawing on 46 interviews with Polish high-tech professionals, this article explores their characteristics and migration experiences in Silicon Valley. Grounded theory, a biographical method, a transnational approach and the concept of social anchoring guided my data collection, analysis and interpretation. The study results indicated that high-tech professionals were well prepared for immigration to the United States and were able to integrate effectively into the multicultural environment of Silicon Valley by adopting the rules of the host society ‘only as much as necessary’ without rejecting their previous cultural affiliations. Working at the level of competence and professional experience from the moment of arriving in the United States facilitated their structural adaptation to American society. The study contributes to the existing body of literature in migration research by offering a nuanced insight into motivations, identities and values of modern highly skilled migrants and providing new ways of understanding their decision-making processes on migration and settlement.

The author of the article proposes an analysis of the phenomenon of “polonisation” of the French language carried out by a group of Polish francophone novelists, who, during the Romantic Era, wrote historical novels devoted to the past of Poland. He proposes to see this phenomenon as an example of translingualism. After having defined this term, the author highlights the links between narration and translation, analyses the motivation of translingualism, examines its conditioning by the narrative context as well as the forms it takes in the texts, the problems it poses and the solutions proposed by novelists to these difficulties of linguistic transfer.

Ireland has become one of the main destination countries for Polish migrants after Poland’s EU accession in 2004. While much of the literature on Polish migration to Ireland post-2004 focuses on its labour-market element, in this paper we analyse the political participation of Polish migrants. We utilise data from a survey conducted by the Centre of Migration Research (University of Warsaw) with Polish migrants in Ireland which documents low levels of political engagement as measured by voting turnout in Polish presidential and parliamentary elections as well as the Irish local elections and elections to the European Parliament.A lack of knowledge about political participation rights or how to engage in voting is one explanation for the low levels of voting, especially in Irish local and European parliamentiary elections. Another explanation may be the attitude that migrants have towards the political system and how they can influence it. Polish migrants predominantly report that they have no or little influence on politics in Poland and have relatively less trust in the authorities and politicians there (compared to Ireland). The key individual-level characteristic affecting Polish migrant respondents’ electoral participation in Ireland is their (lack of) voting habit formed before migration.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the participation of Indigenous Australians in Slow Food International’s 2018 Salone del Gusto-Terra Madre meeting in Turin, Italy. Slow Food is a global grassroots organisation created to promote local food cultures and traditions, and the organisation’s Terra Madre network highlights the urgent need to pro- tect the food-production systems of Indigenous peoples, valuing their holistic approach and recognising them as custodians of biodiversity. By creating a platform for Indigenous peoples to meet and discuss their challenges and ideas, and by putting Indigenous knowl- edges and stewardship of the environment at the centre of discussions about tackling glob- al environmental challenges, the organisation encourages its Indigenous members to work toward food sovereignty in their respective countries as well as on an international level.

The New England Transcendentalists deliberately chose a position which by definition did not belong to what was to them the common “prosaic mood” (Thoreau) of their time. Their choice was the result of representatively romantic discontent with their contemporary reality and, at the same time, through the vigorous drive of the Puritan spiritual leadership, it was essentially anachronistic. The sophisticated delight of identifying with such a doubly anomalous nonconformist ideal only intensified the need for counterbalancing the prosaic sanity of the real world with a wished-for poetic insanity, or “madness from the gods” (Emerson). Such “madness by romantic identification” whose “features have been fixed once and for all by Cervantes” (Foucault), naturally caused “Quixotic confusion” between reality and imagination and the substitution of the true with the fabulous. Though peculiarly intensified in the former Puritan context and in the context of ‘Americanness’ in which the nineteenth century New England intellectuals placed it, the problem was far from being merely a local, New England-centered, phenomenon. This paper argues that in their ‘in/sane’ Quixotic quest for perfection, which caused a series of personal failures, the New England Transcendentalists were remarkably faithful saunterers in a blessed place that, to them, was both America and, at the same time, the all-encompassing perennial—translocal and transnational—world, inviting them to establish what Emerson called “an original relation to the universe.”

Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form derived from ancient dance styles, which is now seen as representative of Indian culture. In India, it is the most popular classical dance form exerting a great impact not only on the field of dance itself, but also on other art forms, like sculpture or painting. The Indian-American diaspora practices it both in an attempt to preserve its culture and as an assertion of its cultural identity. Dance is an art form that relates to sequences of body movements that are simultaneously aesthetic and symbolic, and rooted in specific cultures. It often tells a story. Different cultures observe different norms and standards by which dances should be performed (as well as by whom they should be performed and on what occasions). At the same time, dance and dancers influence (and are influenced by) different cultures as a result of transcultural interactions. Priya Srinivasan’s Sweating Saris: Indian Dance as Transnational Labor is a particularly valuable source wherein its author critically examines a variety of Indian dance forms, especially Bharatanatyam, tracing the history of dance as well as the lived experience of dancers across time, class, gender, and culture. With the help of this text, selected journal articles, and interviews with Bharatanatyam dancers in India and the US, I explore larger issues of gender, identity, culture, race, region, nation, and power dynamics inherent in the practice of Bharatanatyam, focusing on how these practices influence and, in turn, are influenced by transnational and translocal connections.

This paper examines practices and strategies of consumption among Polish migrants in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Bridging theoretical perspectives on postmodernism, transnationalism and consumer society, the author discusses extent to which consumerism among Polish migrants can be seen as their way of integration with the local community in Northern Ireland. Focusing on conspicuous and inconspicuous consumption, this article explores the reasons why migrants take on the local consumption practices. Furthermore it examines migrants’ attempts to increase their social status, and display wealth through their engagement in consumer culture. Next, differences in Polish and local consumption patterns are teased out. Following this, the author links consumerism among Polish migrants to their embeddedness in local, transnational and global spheres. This research adopts 30 in-depth interviews.
Artykuł rozważa praktyki i strategie konsumpcyjne wśród migrantów polskich w Belfaście, Irlandii Północnej. Nawiązując do teorii postmodernizmu, transnacjonalizmu i spoleczeństwa konsumpcyjnego, autor rozpatruje, do jakiego stopnia praktyki konsumpcyjne wśród migrantów polskich mogą być postrzegane jako proces integracyjny ze spoleczeństwem polnocnoirlandzkim. Skupiając uwagę na konsumpcji na pokaz (conspicuous consumption) i nieostentacyjnej (inconspicuous consumption), autor rozważa powody, dla których migranci przejmują lokalne praktyki konsumpcyjne. Ponadto, artykuł podejmuje tematykę konsumpcji jako sposobu podkreślania statusu spolecznego wśród migrantów polskich. Autor wskazuje także na rożnice między praktykami konsumpcyjnymi Polakow i obywateli Irlandii Północnej. Zwraca uwage na umiejscowienie migrantów w lokalnych, transnarodowych i globalnych strukturach spoleczno-kulturowych. Artykuł opiera się na analizie 30 wywiadow jakościowych.

The world in which we live is crisscrossed by multiple flows of people, information, non-human life, travel circuits and goods. At least since the Sixteenth Century, the Americas have received and generated new social, cultural and product trends. As we see through the case studies presented here, modern literature and dance, the industrialization of food and the race to space cannot be historicized without considering the role the Americas, and particularly the United States, have played in all of them. We also see, at the same time, how these flows of thought, art, science and products emerged from sources outside the Americas to then take root in and beyond the United States. The authors in this special volume are devising conceptual tools to analyse this multiplicity across continents and also at the level of particular nations and localities. Concepts such as cosmopolitanism, translocality and astronautics are brought to shed light on these complex crossings, giving us new ways to look at the intricacy of these distance-crossing flows. India, perhaps surprisingly, emerges as an important cultural interlocutor, beginning with the idealized, imagined versions of Indian spirituality that fuelled the romanticism of the New England Transcendentalists, to the importance of Indian dance pioneers in the world stage during the first part of the twentieth century and the current importance of India as a player in the race to space.

Diasporic communities have links with at least two types of places: those where they settle or transit through, and those from where they came from. Between those places exists a space, called transnational. The temporal dimension is essential, whether or not it is linked to the movement of the migrant between those various places. The diasporic media are crucial for these transnational communities, not only to foster the sense of belonging, but also for the identity construction of given groups. This article aims to describe diasporic media through reflexion on this role in the context of various complexities accompanying their emergence in the world which has surpassed all traditional information sources. The article begins with a review of some of the main theoretical currents in the literature on diaspora, transnationalism and media. These theoretical bases are applied in the case study of the Slovak diaspora and its media as a concrete experience of transnational experience over time.
Społeczności diasporyczne mają powiązania z co najmniej dwoma typami miejsc: tymi, w których się osiedlają lub przez które przejeżdżają, oraz tymi, z których pochodzą. Pomiędzy tymi miejscami istnieje przestrzeń zwana transnarodową. Wymiar czasowy jest niezbędny, niezależnie od tego, czy jest związany z przemieszczaniem się migranta między tymi różnymi miejscami. Media diasporyczne odgrywają kluczową rolę w tych społecznościach ponadnarodowych, nie tylko w celu promowania poczucia przynależności, ale także w budowaniu tożsamości poszczególnych grup. Artykuł ten ma na celu opisanie mediów diasporycznych poprzez refleksję nad tą rolą w kontekście różnych zawiłości towarzyszących ich pojawianiu się w świecie, który przekroczył wszelkie tradycyjne źródła informacji. Artykuł rozpoczyna się od przeglądu niektórych głównych prądów teoretycznych w literaturze na temat diaspory, transnacjonalizmu i mediów. Te podstawy teoretyczne są stosowane w studium przypadku diaspory słowackiej i jej mediów jako konkretne doświadczenie doświadczeń ponadnarodowych w czasie.

This paper explores the ways in which young people aged 12 to 18 who were born in Central and Eastern European EU countries but now live in the United Kingdom construct their future imaginaries in the context of Brexit. It reports on findings from a large-scale survey, focus groups and family case studies to bring an original perspective on young migrants’ plans for the future, including mobility and citizenship plans, and concerns over how Britain’s decision to leave the European Union might impact them. While most of the young people planned to stay in Britain for the immediate future, it was clear that Brexit had triggered changes to their long-term plans. These concerns were linked to uncertainties over access to education and the labour market for EU nationals post-Brexit, the precarity of their legal status and their overall concerns over an increase in racism and xenophobia. While our young research participants expressed a strong sense of European identity, their imaginaries rarely featured ‘going back’ to their country of birth and instead included narratives of moving on to more attractive, often unfamiliar, destinations. The reasons and dynamics behind these plans are discussed by drawing on theories of transnational belonging.

Badania nad myślą Shmuela N. Eisenstadta (1923–2010) oraz te kontynuujące i rozwijające jego dziedzictwo nieustannie przybierają na sile i to w najrozmaitszych zakątkach świata. Fakt ten nie może dziwić, skoro rezultaty jego własnych obszernych badań uznawane są zazwyczaj za jeden z najważniejszych i najoryginalniejszych produktów w dziedzinie socjologii, filozofii cywilizacji, filozofii kultury, filozofii polityki i społeczeństwa drugiej połowy XX i początku XXI wieku. Wskazane przesłanki skłoniły mnie do napisania tekstu, który z założenia jest artykułem przeglądowym, tj. krytyczną prezentacją kilku istotnych wątków jednej z nowszych książek pisanych z perspektywy teorii Shmuela N. Eisenstadta, zatytułowanej Varieties of multiple modernities. New Research Design (dalej: Varieties). Książka stanowi bardzo ważny wkład do dorobku badań nad myślą izraelskiego socjologa, zarazem znacznie przekraczającą jego dziedzictwo. Jej autorzy podjęli próbę stawienia czoła najbardziej aktualnym zagadnieniom i wydarzeniom otaczającego nas świata. To, czy narzędzia, jakie dostarcza Eisenstadt, pomagają w tego typu przedsięwzięciach pozostawiam już opinii czytelnika Varieties. Książka, jako wynik projektu interdyscyplinarnego, stanowi zapewne ogromne źródło wiedzy, stąd może być inspiracją dla reprezentantów różnych dyscyplin.
Research on the thought of Shmuel N. Eisenstadt (1923-2010), as well as studies continuing and developing his ideas, is gaining traction in different corners of the world. This fact is not surprising since the results of his own extensive research are usually considered as one of the most important and original products in the field of sociology, philosophy of civilisation, philosophy of culture, as well as the philosophy of politics and society of the mid-20th and early 21st century. This article offers a critical presentation of several important threads of a recent book entitled Varieties of multiple modernities: New Research Design (hereinafter: Varieties) that engages with the theories of Shmuel N. Eisenstadt. This book is a very important contribution to work on the thought of the Israeli sociologist and it moves beyond his ideas. The authors make an attempt to face current issues and events in the world around us. Whether or not the tools provided by Eisenstadt help in this type of endeavour, I leave the readers of Varieties to judge. The book, a result of an interdisciplinary project, is a huge source of knowledge. It can be an inspiration for representatives of various disciplines.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is to assess the extent to which the 2016 Brexit referendum impacted on the decisions of young Polish and Lithuanian migrants to stay in the UK or return to the country of origin. We analyse information from 76 in-depth semi-structured interviews with Lithuanians and Poles living in the UK, as well as those who have returned to Lithuania and Poland since June 2016. We find that, for our interviewees, the referendum had little impact on the decision to stay in the UK or return to the country of origin, giving way, instead, to work, family and lifestyle considerations. Only for a select few did it act as a trigger, either adding to other reasons which eventually prompted the return to Lithuania or Poland, or motivating people to secure their rights in the UK and delay plans to leave the country. We conclude by discussing our results together with existing research on transnationalism and life-course migration theory: regardless of interviewees’ decisions to stay or return, these were never final, stressing the fluid nature of migration and the desire of our interviewees to maintain ties across multiple places.

Opis:
The article aims at presenting trans-local aspects of Kurdish society and especially trans-local ties maintained by Kurds in Turkey and particularly in Istanbul. Inspired by transnational theories in migration and diaspora studies, the author proposes a categorization of Kurdish migration waves and waves of internal migration in Turkey. Drawing on in-depth interviews conducted with Kurds in Istanbul, depicted are ways of maintaining ties with the country's Kurdish regions and types of social organizing around their culture and perceived needs. The paper offers an insight into contemporary Kurdish migration in Turkey which leads to the conclusion that although trans-locality has often been forced on Kurds, the socio-political situation in the years 2002-2015 led to the emergence of new, trans-local, socially active Kurdish elite in Turkey.
Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie trans-lokalnych aspektów społeczeństwa kurdyjskiego, a zwłaszcza więzi trans-lokalnych utrzymywanych przez Kurdów w Turcji, a zwłaszcza w Stambule. Zainspirowany transnarodowymi teoriami w studiach nad migracjami i diasporami, autor proponuje kategoryzację fal migracji kurdyjskich i fal migracji wewnętrznych w Turcji. Na podstawie pogłębionych wywiadów przeprowadzonych z Kurdami w Stambule przedstawiono sposoby utrzymywania więzi przez migrantów z kurdyjskimi regionami tego kraju oraz drogi organizowania się wokół kultury i postrzeganych potrzeb Północnego Kurdystanu. Artykuł oferuje wgląd we współczesną migrację kurdyjską w Turcji, a jednocześnie prowadzi do wniosku, że chociaż trans-lokalność była często wymuszana na Kurdach, sytuacja społeczno-polityczna w latach 2002-2015 doprowadziła do wykształcenia się nowych, trans-lokalnych, zaangażowanych społecznie elit kurdyjskich w Turcji.

W znanej koncepcji relacji miejsca do przestrzeni Yi Fu Tuan (1987) dostrzeżono, że przestrzeń i miejsce wzajemnie się splatają. Minione dziesięciolecia, a zwłaszcza doświadczenia współczesnego, mobilnego świata spowodowały, że relację przestrzeni i miejsca należy ponownie zdefiniować. Miejsce nie jest już trwałe, oparte na historycznych odniesieniach, na pamięci własnej i przodków, na więziach społecznych i interakcjach przebiegających w jednej przestrzeni i czasie. W tekście postawiono tezę, że zmiana miejsca pobytu na skutek coraz większej mobilności współczesnego świata nie skazuje migrantów na zerwanie więzi z miejscem dotychczasowym. Staje się ono (na podstawie proponowanego przez Creswella rozumienia, 2004) lokalizacją otwartą i dynamiczną, to jest taką, która się tworzy, jest otwarta na innych i opiera się na wielu różnych historiach. W interpretacji odniesiono się do koncepcji transnarodowości i przykładu rodziny transnarodowej, które tworzą nową przestrzeń do życia rodzinnego w rozłące przestrzennej.
Yi Fu Tuan’s well known idea of relation between space and place (1987) depicts them as being mutually entwined. Nevertheless, past decades of increasing mobility resulted in the need of redefining the thus far known perception of space and place relation. The place is no longer discerned as permanent, it is based neither on historical references, nor on one's own memory and the memory of one's ancestors, nor on social bonds and interactions occurring in a specific space and at a specific time. The text’s thesis assumes that changing the place of residence due to the escalating mobility of contemporary world does not necessarily result in breaking the bonds with the previous location. Basing on the Creswell’s understanding of the matter (2004), the previous location becomes an open and dynamic place, which is still being created and is available for other people. This location is built upon multiple and various stories.  In the following document the author pertains to the concept of transnationality and to the example of transnational families that create new space for family life in spatial separation.
