The main focus of this paper is to examine the translation strategies of the translators of Herta Müller’s novel Atemschaukel, Radka Denemarková (Czech) and Katarzyna Leszczyńska (Polish). The aim is to find out to what extent the cultural experience of these translators, consisting of biographical, artistic and linguistic aspects, has influenced the translations. Important in this context is the transculturalism of the author Herta Müller. She uses idiomatic expressions and uses borrowings and a multitude of neologisms, the translation of which is influenced to varying degrees by the cultural experience of the translators in their search for equivalence at the level of expression.

Presented article is a recapitulation of visible tendencies in both Polish and Czech publishing markets with regard to publications of literary translations of Czech literature in Poland and Polish literature in the Czech Republic in 2016 and 2017. It presents the most important literary translations in each language pair, pointing out leading publishers and the most active translators in this area. Finally, the author outlines general paths along which the Polish literature translations in the Czech Republic and vice versa develop.

The term “imagination” has numerous meaning: colloquial, paraliterary, scientific. They all refer to auto-communication, which is a conversation of an individual with him or herself, when our mind faculties: memory, intuition, observation, intelligence, knowledge – and imagination, too – compete for dominance or strive for harmonious cooperation. Similarly to the generally understood imagination, its particular, important species (literary imagination) requires internal classification, because it is always an imagination of role: of the author, the reader, the expert, the performer, the censor, the distributor, or sometimes of the translator. The question of translator’s and author’s status provokes a comparison between author’s and translator’s imagination: they share some qualities, but also have decidedly different ones. The opposition between created nature and creating nature, which is a notion used by Józef Czechowicz, might be helpful in capturing the similarities and differences. But this opposition, too, demands a literary and historical context. The author created by the romantic myth seems someone gifted with imagination creating literary worlds, which are limitless, whereas the author of realist works, especially diaries, must give priority to observation, when a piece of external, empirical reality is described and recorded. Baroque, romanticism, realism, expressionism, avant-garde, postmodernism differ in their canons of imagination. The creative process by the author of an original work becomes a negotiation between innovations of authorial fantasy and recreation of the canon. The translator is under much stronger pressure from his or her times, because his or her objectives and tasks are different. Usually, knowledge is enough for a translator: linguistic, historical, literary, common, encyclopaedic, specialised. If knowledge fails, the translator reaches out to imagination as an instrument for interpretation of source text, but this happens only when the text is ambiguous and rich in images. Be it as it may, the quality and range of translator’s activity are determined by someone else’s imagination, accumulated in the translated work, and present in its rhetorics.

It is claimed that the Polish sworn translator in his/her translating activities is subject to a complex processes of image manufacturing. Based on some important contributions to the problem of image generation, it is shown that the Polish sworn translator’s practices within image generation suffer from being intuitive, not very careful and lacking cautious planning. It is also claimed that a successful image generation should be strengthened by proper cross-cultural conditioning.

The history of translations of distinguished authors (Collodi, De Amicis, Salgari) and selected female Italian writers is analysed. The article presents also “short” life histories of Polish translators who worked in the years 1923-1939. It was through their effort and dedication that Polish children of the inter-war period were introduced to Italian literature for young readers.

This paper shows the manifold aspects of the non-translation phenomenon : besides shortened and summarized versions, which alter the source text in a quantitative way, non-translation can also have a qualitative effect, for instance when sociocultural references are erased. If non-translation is an infringement of the translator's duties, in some cases it can be a very fruitful solution. There is a lack of literature on the subject, and although it is often mentioned briefly, this phenomenon has never been tackled seriously.

W artkule zostają omówione zmieniające się teorie przekładoznawcze, które lokują wierność tłumaczy w różnych elementach procesu translacyjnego. Raz wymaga się od nich wierności wobec autora tekstu źródłowego, innym razem wobec oryginału lub kolejno: czytelników pierwowzoru, kultury wyjściowej, kultury docelowej, odbiorcy przekładu, zleceniodawcy przekładu, norm docelowych itp. Raz traktuje się tłumacza jako kopistę, innym razem pozwala mu się ingerować w tekst i być jego drugim autorem (czasem ważniejszym niż twórca pierwowzoru!). Te zmieniające się normy translatoryczne są opisane w artykule z punktu widzenia etyki słowa, dlatego najbardziej uwypuklona została w nim jedna z nowszych teorii przekładu − tj.„Szkoła Manipulistów”. Od lojalności tłumacza (wobec kogo? czego?) zależy kształt przekładu, który z kolei wpływa na rzesze czytelników, ich poglądy i postawy życiowe. Gdzie więc tłumacz ma tę lojalność lokować, wobec kogo i czego ma być wierny? W artykule zostają także udzielone odpowiedzi na te pytania.
The author discusses various changing translational theories which place the translator's loyalty in different elements of the translational process. Sometimes loyalty towards the author of the source text is demanded of them, and other times faithfulness towards the original work or to its readers, source culture, target culture, target recipients, translation commissioner, norms of the target culture etc. is required. Sometimes translators are treated like mere copyists, and other times as second authors (often even more important than the creators of the original texts). The article describes these changing norms from an ethical point of view, focusing on one of the most modern theories – the Manipulation School. A translator's loyalty (to what and whom?) influences the shape of the translation, which, in turn, affects its readers, their views and attitudes. And so, where should translators place their loyalty, to whom and to what should they be faithful? These questions require answers and answers are provided.

Vo svojom príspevku sa zaobera aj súčasnými slovenským knižným trhom, ktorý zverejňuje preklady poľskej literatúry, slovenskými vydavateľstvami a prekladeteľmi. Podrobne analýzuje prekladovú literatúru z ohľadom na jej vstup do nového literarného kontextu.
Marta Buczek — the author of the article Polish Literature in Slovak translations after 2007 describes in detail the Polish literature which was translated in Slovakia in the years 2007—2013. In her article she also deals with contemporary Slovak publishers market which publishes translations of Polish literature, Slovak publishers and Slovak translators. She analyzes translation literature with view of its entry into a new literary context.

This article focuses on the career of Jerzy Pleśniarowicz, the well-known Polish translator of Slavic literatures and poet associated with the Józef Czechowicz poetry group, and who, in his capacity as dramatist and theatre director, has directed on the Polish scene plays by Slovak dramatists including Július Barč-Ivan, Ivan Bukovčan, Ľubomír Feldek, Osvald Zahradník. The article discusses the output of this poet, viewing him primarily as a translator of Slovak literature; it goes on to analyse his Polish translations of Slovak poetry published in the 2018 volume Wiersze i przekłady wierszy (Poems and Translated Poems). The anthology focuses on the representatives of three main groups: the surrealist poetry group consisting of, among others, Rudolf Fabry, Vladimír Reisel, Pavol Bunčák, Július Lenko, and Štefan Žáry; the Trnavská skupina poetry group, including Ľubomír Feldek, Ján Ondruš, and Ján Stacho; and finally the Mladá tvorba group with the contemporary poets Milan Rúfus, Miroslav Válek, Ján Buzássy, Vlastimil Kovalčík, Vojtech Kondrót, Štefan Strážay, and Vojtech Michálik. The author considers Pleśniarowicz’s translation choices, which are also a strong declaration of his views. She elucidates his translation strategies, pointing out close ties with the poetics of his own work, and also discusses the contemporary significance of this poetry in the Polish sphere of reception.
Príspevok sa zameriava na osobnost’ Jerzého Pleśniarowicza, známeho poľského básnika zo skupiny poetov súvisiacich s poéziou Józefa Czechowicza, divadelného režiséra, ktorý priniesol na poľskú divadelnú scénu drámy slovenských dramatikov (Júliusa Barča-Ivana, Ivana Bukovčana, Ľubomíra Feldeka, Osvalda Zahradníka) a najmä prekladateľa slovanských literatúr. Autorku článku zaujíma fenomén Pleśniarowicza ako prekladateľa slovenskej literatúry. V stati sa podrobne analyzujú jeho poľské preklady slovenskej poézie, predstavené v zborníku Wiersze i przekłady wierszy, ktoré boli uverejnené v Poľsku v roku 2018. Štúdia zohľadňuje výber prekladov, ktoré sú silnou deklaráciou prekladových a poetických názorov Pleśniarowicza, okrem iného preklady predstaviteľov surrealistickej skupiny poézie (Rudolfa Fábryho, Vladimíra Reisela, Pavla Bunčáka, Júliusa Lenka, Štefana Žáryho), básnikov z Trnavskej skupiny (Ľubomíra Feldeka, Jána Ondruša, Jána Stacha), predstaviteľov skupiny Mladá tvorba a súčasných básnikov (Milana Rúfusa, Miroslava Válka, Jána Buzássyho, Vlastimila Kovalčíka, Vojtecha Kondróta, Štefana Strážaya či Vojtecha Mihálika). Semantic interference of languages and translator’s “false friends” This contribution deals with lexical and semantic interferences leading to transfers and borrowings from the source into the target language. We analyse the linguistic and extra-linguistic factors of language contact and language interference, especially in the context of bilingualism / multilingualism, produced by globalization. Positive and negative interferences are established in relations between French, English and Ukrainian. A particular attention is drawn to the problem of “false friends” in translation, and some recommendations are given to identify them. Stress is laid on using semantic, stylistic, pragmatic, distributional and formal criteria to distinguish international words.

This paper explores the concept of legal translation as a Third Space through the lens of the ‘multilingual’ Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ). In many ways legal translation at that Court fits readily with the characterisation of translation as a Third Space. Due to complex internal production processes the ECJ produces texts which are undoubtedly hybrid in nature, and which exhibit distinctive features on a lexical and textual level marking them out as a product of cross-fertilisation of influences from source and target languages and legal cultures. Even the teleological approach taken towards legal reasoning at the ECJ occupies a space outside the strict confines of the texts involved. Both the processes and the product of the ECJ’s language system appear to bear all the hallmarks of translation as a Third Space. However, translation at the ECJ also challenges the concept of a Third Space. The prevailing definitions of translation as a Third Space fail to effectively conceptualise additional nuances of the specific nature of drafting and the complex nature of translation at the ECJ. This paper uses original empirical data to demonstrate that translation at the ECJ places constraints on the undefined, vague and fluid nature of the Third Space, warping the forces at work within that space. In this regard, rather than an amorphous space, the Third Space is better thought of as a determinate area which is delimited by elements of translation process which constrain it. This adapted framing of the Third Space can consequently be used to better understand and illustrate the dynamics at play in other areas of legal translation where the current concept of the Third Space is equally inadequate for encompassing the specific nature of translation practices which impact on that space-in-between.

Translators and interpreters need to rewrite or retell the essence of a message to be conveyed in a foreign language through cognitive grammar, implicatures, connotations and sometimes standardized phrases to bring out the full and true meaning in the translated work. The aim of this paper is to acquaint with the specificity of the translator's workshop, familiarization with the working framework for translations of implied meaning, theories of translation and elementary principles to be followed, so that, the reference meaning of the communicated content could impart pragmatic meaning. In view of the constraints of literal translation, special attention is given to linguistic aspects of pragmatics with regard to the conveyance of context sensitivity, precision, intentionality of the communicating sender, influence of the translator’s linguistic intuition and approach, and communicating receiver. Different approaches to translations and possible limitations are exemplified and explained with the use of Polish and English equivalents adopted from standard, maritime and legalese language.

Opis:
A series o f well-known histories and bibliographies o f technical writings in English begin from the premise that start with A Treatise on the Astrolabe by the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer. Nevertheless, it can be shown that there is a notable tradition o f practical technical writings - translations and adaptations o f Latin and Arabic sources - both in Old and Middle English, which pre-date or are contemporary with Chaucer’s. A number o f their characteristics, especially structural, seem to anticipate similar traits o f contemporary scientific and technical discourse.

Acquisition of new terminology in a foreign language is one of fundamental challenges encountered by all translators. Next to the lexical level it is necessary to learn a necessary scope of professional knowledge, enabling the translator to use appropriately the newly acquired vocabulary that often refers to issues which are not known to him/her well even in a native language. The author of the paper deliberates on the methods of effective teaching of specialist language, including mainly legal and economic terminology, required from candidates for sworn translators. She proposes the task based learning consisting of practical translations of selected texts, representing typical genres of speech in the spheres of communication under discussion.
Poznanie terminologii specjalistycznej w języku obcym jest jednym z podstawowych wyzwań dla każdego tłumacza. Obok warstwy leksykalnej konieczne jest także przyswojenie niezbędnego zakresu wiedzy merytorycznej, umożliwiającej tłumaczowi prawidłowe posługiwanie się nowym słownictwem, często dotyczącym kwestii niezbyt dobrze znanych nawet w języku ojczystym. Autorka zastanawia się nad metodami nauczania języka specjalistycznego, głównie terminologii prawniczej i ekonomicznej, wymaganej od kandydatów na tłumacza przysięgłego. Proponuje wykorzystanie podejścia zadaniowego w nabywaniu umiejętności tłumaczenia tekstów, reprezentujących typowe gatunki w omawianych sferach komunikacji.
