The main focus of this paper is to examine the translation strategies of the translators of Herta Müller’s novel Atemschaukel, Radka Denemarková (Czech) and Katarzyna Leszczyńska (Polish). The aim is to find out to what extent the cultural experience of these translators, consisting of biographical, artistic and linguistic aspects, has influenced the translations. Important in this context is the transculturalism of the author Herta Müller. She uses idiomatic expressions and uses borrowings and a multitude of neologisms, the translation of which is influenced to varying degrees by the cultural experience of the translators in their search for equivalence at the level of expression.

This paper shows the manifold aspects of the non-translation phenomenon : besides shortened and summarized versions, which alter the source text in a quantitative way, non-translation can also have a qualitative effect, for instance when sociocultural references are erased. If non-translation is an infringement of the translator's duties, in some cases it can be a very fruitful solution. There is a lack of literature on the subject, and although it is often mentioned briefly, this phenomenon has never been tackled seriously.

This paper is an endeavour to examine the translation of religious terms (praying and oath words) in Shakespeare’s Coriolanus pertaining to two translations by Muhammad al-Sibā‘ī (1881-1931) and Jabra Ibrahim Jabra (1920-1994) into Arabic. This paper seeks to ascertain whether the translators opt for leaving readers in peace and bringing source text (ST) writers’ home or leaving writers in peace and sending target text (TT) readers abroad. The study is based on the theoretical framework of Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) and the pivotal role the translated literature as facts of the target culture in the poly-system of world literature. The study reveals that each of these translations represents a specific strategy in translation. Visible translator is mostly adopted by Jabra Ibrahim Jabra and invisible translator is mostly adopted by Muhammad al-Sibā‘ī.

W pracy opisano wyniki badania przeprowadzonego wśród studentów Filologii Angielskiej Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego w Krakowie na temat słowników i innych narzędzi wykorzystywanych podczas tłumaczeń pisemnych. Badanie potwierdziło powszechną tendencję odchodzenia od tradycyjnych słowników na rzecz narzędzi internetowych. Rezultaty ankiety nasuwają wniosek o konieczności realizowania ze studentami specjalizacji tłumaczeniowej zajęć z zakresu oceny przydatności i wiarygodności takich źródeł
The paper presents the survey conducted among the students of English Philology at the Pedagogical University of Cracow concerning dictionaries and other resources used by them in translation assignments. The results confirm a general trend observed in practice, i.e. departure from traditional dictionaries. Considering the fact that online resources often offer highly reduced content, it is postulated that a translation course should include activities focusing on evaluation of such AIDS

Characters with split personalities in Nessuno torna indietro by Alba de Céspedes and the German-Polish history of the novel – This paper focuses on the Polish reception of Nessuno torna indietro, a novel by Alba de Céspedes. In Italy the novel was a bestseller between 1938 and the eighties, however it was impossible to publish it in Poland due to the fact that negotiations failed. Nevertheless, the book was translated into Polish on the basis of the German version and published in a newspaper in 1947. The presentation of the Polish history of this novel will be based on archival materials.

This paper aims to explore the challenges of the Ukrainian system of translators training caused by modern technology advancement. The paper applies established ideas in practical approaches to the improvement of translators training system with respect to new technological requirements for the professionals. The relevant data were obtained by the analysis of questionnaire results. The problems of education of translators in Ukraine under the conditions of dramatic social and political changes are considered. The lack of training in the sphere of technology application for professional development is pointed out on the basis of the research results analysis. The research has also shown the contradictions between the needed level of technological skills of the students of the translation department and modern professional standards. The changes of certification standards for translators in terms of information literacy skills, ethics, and management as related to technological advancement are shown. The paper discusses the results of the original survey involving high school graduates, students, and faculty staff. The recommendations proposed are based on the critical study of the peculiarities of the system of translators training in Ukraine.

The bibliography includes translations into the Silesian language made both in the standard script as well as in the non-standard one. The starting point for translations into the contemporary Silesian may be dated back to 2002. Since then, there have been irregularly published, usually in the form of collections, translations of various literary genres (with a preponderance of poetic forms) from dozen or so world languages, such as: Greek, Latin, French, German, Polish, Mandarin Chinese, English, Welsh, Russian, or the Upper Sorbian. No single translation from Silesian into other language is included, since heretofore no such a translation has been made.

Not only students themselves but also the universities or higher schools they study at should be responsible for their professional success in the job market and be equally interested in the question of how to meet the challenge they may soon face with. The solution to that problem may also be found in students’ internship realized in the period of studies. This paper presents the results of the research conducted to learn what students of English and Applied Linguistics think about the methods of teaching they are offered, the curricula and professional internship. Moreover, it describes the way in which the internship mentioned is realized in the State School of Higher Professional Education in Płock. At the same time the paper tries to answer the question whether the form of internship offered meets the expectations of those eager to look for their future career in the field of professional translation practice.

It is claimed that the Polish sworn translator in his/her translating activities is subject to a complex processes of image manufacturing. Based on some important contributions to the problem of image generation, it is shown that the Polish sworn translator’s practices within image generation suffer from being intuitive, not very careful and lacking cautious planning. It is also claimed that a successful image generation should be strengthened by proper cross-cultural conditioning.

To find out how online social networking sites allow Chinese translators to develop their own networks, the experiences of ten Chinese translation-related Facebook page owners were studied. Based on a mixed-method design, the study shows that Facebook pages were opened to interact with the general public and readers to obtain feedback. Translation practitioners benefit by keeping a record of work, attracting people to their blogs, and establishing working relationships. However, indecent disclosure of clients’ information may do more harm than good.

Waleria Marrené-Morzkowska (1832-1903), pisarka, dziennikarka i tłumaczka oraz Zofia Ernstowa (1918-1994), autorka kilkudziesięciu tłumaczeń literatury włoskiej, działały w odległych momentach historycznych, niełatwych dla polskiej kultury narodowej. Zarówno w okresie rozbiorów, jak i w czasach PRL-u wiele inicjatyw na polu kultury dochodziło do skutku jedynie dzięki determinacji jednostek. Źródła przechowywane we włoskich i polskich archiwach pozwalają częściowo zrekonstruować „mikrohistorię” przedstawionych tłumaczek, ich kontakty z włoskimi pisarzami oraz wysiłki podejmowane w Polsce w celu udostępnienia polskiemu odbiorcy ważnych dzieł literatury włoskiej. Jak wynika z prowadzonych badań, sprawczość tłumaczek nie ograniczała się jedynie do wykonania przekładu, ale polegała na aktywnym uczestnictwie w doborze dzieł i ich promocji, przyczyniając się w ten sposób do tworzenia polskiego kanonu włoskiej literatury.
Waleria Marrené-Morzkowska (1832-1903), writer, journalist and translator, and Zofia Ernstowa (1918-1994), author of several dozen translations from Italian literature, were active in two (distinct) historical moments that were not easy for the Polish culture. During the partitions as well as in the times of the Polish People’sRepublic many cultural initiatives were undertaken thanks to the determination of individuals. The archival materials preserved in Italy allow to reconstruct their microhistory, contacts with the Italian writers and activities in Poland that aimed at printing the selected works, constituting proof that the translator’s agency is not limited to execution of the commissions but often involves active participation in selecting the works for translation in order to create a literary canon.

This study presents some of the results stemming from my research on picturebook translations for children and young adults in the context of multimodality, and in particular, the strategies used by translators of this specific type of multimodal message. The aim of the study is to determine whether translation scholars’ postulates on picturebook’s translation are reflected in reality. In order to determine this, I will investigate the choices of translators of this medium and their awareness of multimodality. I intend to conduct a series of individual in-depth interviews with picturebook translators. The first interview has already been conducted and analysed, and in this paper I present the results of this analysis. In the examples cited from the supporting material, it can be observed that the translator took into account the relationship between the textual and visual layers, changing the original text in accordance with the visual layer.

Language disciplines, including Terminology and Specialized Translation, have made great strides after the second half of the twentieth century. This development, related to technological growth and international communication that occurred during this period, has resulted in a considerable increase of concepts. Thus, experts have become more and more aware of the importance of naming these new concepts. Specialized translators were among the first language professionals to recognize the need of mastering the terminology of specialized fields in order to perform their duties well (Antia et coll., 2005). In this work, we study the very close relationship between Terminology and Specialized Translation. Uzyskanie uprawnień do wykonywania zawodu tłumacza przysięgłego, który w Polsce nadal należy do zawodów regulowanych, zakłada spełnienie prawnie określonych wymogów formalnych. Wśród nich nie znajdziemy jednak kompetencji miękkich, takich jak np. otwartość czy asertywność. Także opracowania naukowe na temat kompetencji tłumacza przysięgłego koncentrują się głównie na kompetencji językowej, kulturowej, tłumaczeniowej, wiedzy specjalistycznej, rzadziej kompetencji etycznej. Jednakże na podstawie omówionych w literaturze przedmiotu problemów związanych z wykonywaniem tego zawodu można ustalić kompetencje miękkie, które są przydatne lub niezbędne w pracy tłumacza przysięgłego. Celem artykułu jest próba usystematyzowania takich kompetencji miękkich.
Obtainment of the right to practice the profession of a sworn translator, which in Poland belongs to regulated occupations, consists in the fulfilment of legally defined formal requirements. Among them, however, there is no place for soft competences, such as assertiveness. Furthermore, scientific studies on the competence of a sworn translator mainly focus on linguistic, cultural, translation skills, specialist knowledge, and rarely ethical competence. However, on the basis of problems related to the profession discussed in the literature, it is possible to determine soft skills that are useful or necessary in the work of a sworn translator. The aim of the article is to attempt to systematize such soft competences.

In this article the author analyzes the evolution of the role of the translator in a world dominated by new technologies and the influence of these on the training of future translators. She focuses primarily on machine translation and post-editing. The purpose is illustrated by the results of experiments carried out within the framework of a program belonging to the EMT network and whose objective is to compare the steps of rewording in target language by post-editing and by a human translation exclusively. These experiments make it possible to draw some conclusions concerning the training of students integrating machine translation and post-editing.

The main aim of this paper is to present the results of a questionnaire study on the everyday functioning of a group of literary translators within the Polish publishing industry. The article provides an overview of the second decade of the 21st century in the field of literary translation in Poland – both in terms of the activity (and visibility) of translators, as well as translation scholars. This text focuses on the issue of war in Afghanistan from 1979–1989 and its realities. The lexicon associated with the everyday life of Afghanistan civilians and Soviet soldiers was analysed. The observations indicate that additional information appears more often in the translated text, which makes it much more transparent for the final recipient. This fact was confirmed by the statistical data, only one footnote can be found in the Polish text and 173 in the Russian text.

This article deals with the issue of the role of a translator in translating specialized texts. It is theoretically assumed that a translator of that kind of texts is merely a transferor of information and should not intervene with the meaning of the given text. Numerous studies show, however, that a translator of specialized texts – subject to the nature of the given text – must employ a whole range of translation techniques which aim at explicating certain concealed or unknown messages being conveyed to the receiving party. In this article we strive to prove that these explanatory techniques can take on a totally different dimension when applied to scientific or pragmatic texts. Therefore it can be inferred that translating scientific texts provides for different interventions on the part of the translator than in the case of translating utilitarian texts. Nevertheless, each such intervention is to some extent creative from the point of view of the role of the translator in the process of the transfer.

Opis:
Acquisition of new terminology in a foreign language is one of fundamental challenges encountered by all translators. Next to the lexical level it is necessary to learn a necessary scope of professional knowledge, enabling the translator to use appropriately the newly acquired vocabulary that often refers to issues which are not known to him/her well even in a native language. The author of the paper deliberates on the methods of effective teaching of specialist language, including mainly legal and economic terminology, required from candidates for sworn translators. She proposes the task based learning consisting of practical translations of selected texts, representing typical genres of speech in the spheres of communication under discussion.
Poznanie terminologii specjalistycznej w języku obcym jest jednym z podstawowych wyzwań dla każdego tłumacza. Obok warstwy leksykalnej konieczne jest także przyswojenie niezbędnego zakresu wiedzy merytorycznej, umożliwiającej tłumaczowi prawidłowe posługiwanie się nowym słownictwem, często dotyczącym kwestii niezbyt dobrze znanych nawet w języku ojczystym. Autorka zastanawia się nad metodami nauczania języka specjalistycznego, głównie terminologii prawniczej i ekonomicznej, wymaganej od kandydatów na tłumacza przysięgłego. Proponuje wykorzystanie podejścia zadaniowego w nabywaniu umiejętności tłumaczenia tekstów, reprezentujących typowe gatunki w omawianych sferach komunikacji.

Celem opisanych w artykule badań jest diagnoza poziomu subkompetencji frazeologicznej studentów-neofilologów, którzy podjęli naukę na specjalizacji translatorskiej. Kompetencja frazeologiczna traktowana jest jako nieodłączny element kompetencji językowej tłumacza i odpowiada za poprawne posługiwanie się w mowie i piśmie względnie ustabilizowanymi i choćby w niewielkiej części zleksykalizowanymi związkami wyrazowymi. W badaniach wykorzystano metodę ankietową. Zadaniem respondentów było podanie cech definicyjnych frazeologizmu oraz wskazanie jednostek frazeologicznych spośród podanej listy związków wyrazowych. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej ankiety można stwierdzić, iż w opinii respondentów kryterium frazeologiczności spełniają przede wszystkim związki idiomatyczne. Frazeologizm jest traktowany przez studentów-neofilologów tradycjonalistycznie, stereotypowo, a więc przede wszystkim idiomatycznie (w ujęciu W.W. Winogradowa). Respondenci  z trudem dopatrują się cech jednostki frazeologicznej w strukturach częściowo zleksykalizowanych – frazemach (zgodnie z koncepcją W. Chlebdy). Takie rozumienie frazeologii z kolei skutkuje często atomistycznym tłumaczeniem związków frazematycznych, co zazwyczaj prowadzi do naruszenia reguł języka docelowego. Wniosek z przeprowadzonego badania pilotażowego skłania do podjęcia działań w zakresie przeorientowania subkompetencji frazeologicznej z perspektywy czysto idiomatycznej na frazematyczną, co z pewnością przyczyni się do podniesienia jakości rezultatów tłumaczenia.
The aim of the research described in the article is the diagnosis of the level of phraseological subcompetence of the students of neophilology, who started studies with translation specialisation. Phraseological competence is considered an inseparable element of translator’s linguistic competence and it corresponds to correct use of relatively stabilised and even slightly lexicalised phrasemes in oral and written form. Survey method was used in the research. The task of respondents was to name defining features of phraseologism and to indicate phrasological units in the provided list of phrasemes. On the basis of conducted survey, it can be stated that in opinion of the respondents, it is prevalently idioms  that meet the criterion of phraseology. Phraseologism is considered traditionally, stereotypically, and most of all, idiomatically by the students of neophilology (according to W.W. Winogradow). Repondents have difficulties finding the features of phraseological unit in partly lexicalised structures – phrasemes (according to theory of W. Chlebda). This understanding of phraseology in turn often results in atomistic translation of phrasemes, which usually leads to violation of the rules of target language. The conclusion of conducted pilot study induces to take action in terms of reorientation of the phraseological subcompetence, from the purely idiomatic perspective to phrasematic, which will certainly contribute to the improvement of quality of translation results.

V článku autorka predstavuje Slovník slovenských prekladateľov umeleckej literatúry 20. storočia, ktorého prvý zväzok vyšiel v roku 2015 vo vydavateľstve Veda. Autorka opisuje jeho štruktúru aj obsah a pozornosť upriamuje na prekladateľov poľskej literatúry. Vyberá siedmich prekladateľov, ktorí sa najviac venovali prekladu z poľského jazyka, a predstavuje ich profil — štúdium, jazykové vzdelanie, povolanie. Uvádza recenzie literárnych kritikov, definuje ich poetiku. Najviac priestoru venuje Karolovi Chmelovi, ktorý od 90. rokov minulého storočia zaujíma popredné miesto v preklade poľskej literatúry.
The author of this paper introduces the Dictionary of Slovak Literary Translators of the 20th Century of which Veda Publishing House published the first volume in 2015. The paper deals with the structure and contents of the dictionary and it focuses on the translators of Polish literature. The author explores seven translators who predominantly work on translations from the Polish language and she introduces their profiles — from the point of view of study, language education and profession. She also pays attention to literary critics’ reviews and defines their poetics as well. She concentrates primarily on Karol Chmel, who is one of the best -known translators of Polish literature in Slovakia, and who occupies the leading position in this field.

The article deals with the issue of transferring intertextual cultural elements in the process of translation from Russian into Polish. The material for analysis is the fragments of the novel The Black City by Boris Akunin and its translation into Polish by Aleksandra Okuniewska-Stronka. The aim of this article is to present and evaluate the results of transferring cultural connotations and intertextual references from one culture to another. Cultural elements play a significant role in the process of the reception of the text and its translation both by the readers of the original text ‒ native language users – and by the recipients of the translated variant, belonging to a different culture. The comparison of source units and translated target units shows how different the associative circles arising in the process of text reception are. The analysis leads to the conclusion that taking into account the associative and intertextual potential of language units in translation is a very complex process. It requires a double cultural competence from the translator, and involves not only the interpretation of language signs in terms of their cultural code, but also the assessment of the interpretative abilities and capabilities of the recipients.

Semantic interference of languages and translator’s “false friends” This contribution deals with lexical and semantic interferences leading to transfers and borrowings from the source into the target language. We analyse the linguistic and extra-linguistic factors of language contact and language interference, especially in the context of bilingualism / multilingualism, produced by globalization. Positive and negative interferences are established in relations between French, English and Ukrainian. A particular attention is drawn to the problem of “false friends” in translation, and some recommendations are given to identify them. Stress is laid on using semantic, stylistic, pragmatic, distributional and formal criteria to distinguish international words.
