The article presents the dynamics, characteristics and the shifting paradigms of the reception of Polish literature in China from 2012 to 2020. The author analyses the reasons for the popularity of the most often translated and read Polish authors on the Chinese publishing market, with particular interest in Czesław Miłosz, Olga Tokarczuk and Andrzej Sapkowski. She also presents the translators – both experienced and often recognised and awarded doyens of Polish studies in China, and those from the intermediate and youngest generations to whom the oldest ones passed the knowledge, skills, passion and the sense of common mission of building cross-cultural dialogue through literature.

This article discusses the introduction of Polish books to children and young adult readers in South Korea. Its particular focus is on picture books which address environmental issues. Wioletta Hajduk-Gawron and Younghwa Kim examine the conditions favourable to the presence of translations of Polish books on the Korean publishing market, the phenomenon of the picture book and the values of eco-education through literature. Using several books as examples, the authors conduct a sample analysis of the chosen strategies used by publishers in the selection of books to be translated. They also examine strategies used in adapting a Polish book for the different cultural context; these strategies involve explication and textual or graphic modifications.

Italian Translations of Polish Literature
Opis:
This essay examines Italian translations of three Polish novels for young adults, written and set in communist Poland of the 1960s. The analysis focuses on the problems related to the translation of the culture-specific elements of Polish reality in that historical period, almost completely unknown to the young readers in Italy. An in-depth contrastive study of the strategies applied by the translators takes into consideration different channels of the transfer from the source text to the target text. Ożogowska’s translation has been made directly from Polish by an Italian native speaker, Domagalik’s novel is a secondhand translation from German, and Jurgielewicz’s book has been translated into Italian twice: firstly by a tandem of a native Polish speaker and an Italian author of children’s books and later by a native Polish speaker without extensive translational practice. The comparison between the texts brings forward the importance of extratextual factors in the process of translation.

In the last part, I examine a few passages to demonstrate how Białoszewski’s style has come to be flattened in the translation process.

She reflects on the situation of Polish literature in the world, taking into account the ways in which Polish works circulate in other cultural circles, the possibilities and limitations of translation as well as shifts within the canon. She also indicates the opportunities that open up for Polish literature in the global context.

Julije Benešć’s correspondence with Polish scholars, people of culture, writers, and numerous acquaintances and friends began in his school years and lasted until his death. A large collection of letters and postcards sent to him by Poles has been collected in the HAZU library in Zagreb, but unfortunately it has not yet been put in order, and some items have been lost. The materials in the collection were only collected in the form of a list prepared by Ivan Meden in 1978. This text presents letters from Maria Kuncewiczowa, which provide information about the relations of Polish writers with the Croatian popularizer of their works and about the writer’s perception of the Polish literary scene in the years 1920s.

In 1930 Sibilla Aleramo translated the play Dom kobiet by Polish writer Zofia Nałkowska into Italian. This three-act drama, probably the first play with only female characters in the history of theatre, was set in Warsaw the same year and was suddenly a huge success in Poland. Aleramo’s translation has remained unpublished and has been preserved (as a manuscript and a typescript draft) in the author’s archive belonging to the Fondazione Istituto Gramsci in Rome. The paper focuses on the history of this text, based mainly on the analysis of Nałkowska’s diary and unpublished letters and documents from Aleramo’s archive.

Opis:
Between the years 1990 and 2006, about 50 Polish books (poetry, prose and drama) were translated in already independent Slovenia, also a lot of single poems, short stories and fragments of more substantial compositions. Slovene macrochoices from Polish literature on the one hand constitute continuation of the traditional presence in the Slovene culture, on the other hand they result from increasing language and encyclopedic competencies of the translators. The choices are defined by four criteria: Polishness, empathy, the desire to get to know the Polish mentality, the historically‑literal process and personal motivation. The authors of choices and translations of Polish literature are translators belonging to many generations, differently evaluating the needs of a Slovene reader and the character of Polish literature and mentality. Although Polish literature is distinctly present in the Slovene literary life, in the Slovene choices from it dominates perspective of strangeness, with which translators from different generations familiarise the native recepient, choosing works belonging to the canon and often to the opposite pole.

What kind of imagery (constructed in a continuous discursive process) is projected on the Nordic region, and what purposes does this construction serve? The analysis draws on an understanding of place as a construct based on “body, landscape and culture” (Ringgaard & DuBois 2017:20) and uses concepts taken from imagology and literary reception studies.

Разглеждайки го списъка на преведените през последните петдесет годин книги от български на полски очевидно е, че след 1989 година броят на артистичните преводи систематично и драматично намалява. Причината на тези негативни тенденции трябва да се търси в крайно неразбираема културна политика — отлагане на съответните институции задалженията си да се подкрепя междукултурен диалог. Очевидно е, че без структурните промяни (подкрепящи активно действаши преводачи) няма шанс за прогресивните промяни.
After 1989 the number of translations of Bulgarian literature into Polish decreased dramatically in comparison with the output of the previous 50 years. On the one hand, this seems to be caused by a complete change of the Polish state’s cultural policy principles, too little activity on the part of relevant institutions, or even giving up the obligation to create and support the inter‑cultural dialogue or to mediate in this process. On the other hand, it is primarily market economy and interest of the media and not the efforts or commitment of the translators that are decisive factors for the number and quality of publications.

The Polish-Lithuanian Tatars began to form their own literature in the Polish and Old Byelorussian languages from the end of the 16th century. All Tatar texts were handwritten exclusively in Arabic script, irrespective of their own language. Tatar writings were characterized by the anonymity of the author but we know the author of the most important literary achievement of this community – the complete translation of the Qur’an dated 1686: the imam of Minsk, Urjasz b. Ism‚‘īl Szlamowicz. Most of the Tatar texts were translated from the Islamic popular religious literature spread in the land of the Golden Horde and Ottoman Empire. The appearance of this sort of Tatar oeuvre resulted from the fact that the Tatars had lost their native tongue sometime within the 16th and 17th c. This made the translation of the popular Islamic literature necessary to preserve the Tatars’ own religion. The Tatar manuscripts also contain an important component adopted from the Old Polish Christian literature including the Polish translation of the Bible by Szymon Budny (1572) created for the Arians – the most radical protestant movement in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Tatars integrated a significant amount of motifs and ideas of their Christian social environment into their religious Islamic traditions. Therefore we can assume that another factor that contributed to the rise of the Tatar literature was the religious and cultural revival which encompassed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th c. during the Renaissance and Reformation era. Apparently it played an important role in the cultural integration of this Turkic-Islamic community with local Christian society and culture.

Studies on reception of Spanish literature into foreign languages are increasing but are still insufficient because of the large number of languages and the long chronological period to be analyzed. This paper proposes an approach to the reception of contemporary Spanish literature in Poland through the translation grants offered by the Spanish government. These grants allow us to know which are the most in-demand Spanish authors by foreign publishers, and how the publishing trends are changing the canon of contemporary Spanish literature. Our study considers the period between 2006-2016 and tries to answer questions such as which are the most translated Spanish authors and titles, which genres predominate and which Polish publishers have the greatest interest in the publication of contemporary Spanish literature.

Zbierka krátkych poviedok Marakéš (1994) a novela Tri ženy pod orechom (1996), ktoré boli publikované v Poľsku pod názvom Marakesz (2006) sú ojedinelé preklady slovenskej prózy vychádzajúce v tomto roku. The author presents in this paper her consideration of the strategy of translation taken by Jacek Bukowski, polish translator of Václav Pankovčín prose. Short stories Marakéš (1994) and the novel Tri ženy pod orechom (1996) by Václav Pankovčín were publicated in Poland under the title Marakesz (2006) and are the only one example of slovak prose transalted into polish this year. The author of the paper discusses transtlatological problems of the prose wchich strongly corespondents with magical realism, she concentrates on the semantic signals of the text, significant elements of the structure which define the boundary‑line of the meaning space of Václav Pankovčín works. Finaly she reflects on the transfer of implicated senses and meanings from original into translation. She reflects how in proces of translation the translator transfered hormony of fundamental codes of the original (lexical, semantics, cultural and estetic).

Opis:
Hrvatska književnost — i kultura — u Poljskoj često stoga nose ponajprije odrednicu „balkanskog” i „postjugoslavenskog”. S druge strane, poljska književnost u hrvatskim prijevodima uglavnom se predstavlja reprezentativnim autorima, čiji se opus smatra kanonskim i u izvornoj kulturi. Ogledanje jedne kulture u drugoj donosi širu sliku predstavljanja Drugoga i otvara problem odnosa kulturne auto - i heteropredodžbe.
In this article, we have tried to draw an image of Croatian literature in Polish culture, as well as vice versa, in the last 25 years, based on bibliographies and articles on translations in PLS. It has been concluded that, due to translators’ choices of Croatian exile literature, works perceived in the source culture as non -canon, themes related to war, Yugonostalgia and authors whose work belong to the “borderline” of a few nations, Croatian literature in Poland exists as “Balkan” literature. On the other hand, choices of Polish literature in Croatia mainly concerns classic Polish authors. Both cases draw a wider picture of national imagery — a hetero -image — in the target culture.

The Nobel prize in Literature, apart from the prestige for the winners, brings an explosion of translations of their works and makes them accessible to readers all over the world. The four Polish winners of the prize, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Władysław Reymont, Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska, have found their paths to the Spanish speaking public. However, it seems that in the case of Sienkiewicz the influence of the price was minimum: the writer was in tune with the taste of his time and his prose became a publishing success before he received the Nobel, despite the poor quality of the translations. As for The Peasants by Reymont, the complete text of the novel was translated to Spanish probably due to the fact that the author was awarded the prize and up to that moment the readers had only an extract translated from French, which surprisingly continues to be published in the XXI century, despite of all its flaws. Finally, as regards the two great representatives of Polish poetry, the impact of the Nobel prize was decisive for their presence in the Spanish publishing market. Nowadays the Spanish speaking readers, for whom the two poets were completely unknown, have several translations—moreover, magnificent ones—of their works: in the case of Miłosz, a representative sample, in the case of Szymborska, practically all of her poems.
Literacka Nagroda Nobla przynosi, obok prestiżu, również natychmiastowe tłumaczenie dzieł nagrodzonych pisarzy na wiele języków i umożliwia im dotarcie do czytelników na całym świecie. Czterej polscy laureaci tej nagrody, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Władysław Reymont, Czesław Miłosz i Wisława Szymborska, trafili do rąk odbiorców w krajach hiszpańskojęzycznych.

Opis:
This paper addresses a phenomenon of the international success of Swedish female writers in the 19th century. I have focused on the Polish translations of Marie Sophie Schwartz’s works, which became extremely popular in the 1860’s and 1870’s, judging from the number of books translated in comparison to other Swedish bestselling writers. One of the most important issues for Schwartz was emancipation, specifically women’s right to education, employment and econo-mic autonomy. Her novel Emancipation Frenzy was translated into Polish in 1865 and 1876. Both translations differ as to the accuracy in rendering the emancipa-tion message. The earlier translation tends to omit or soften the author’s radical opinions on emancipation, which flattens the novel’s progressive message. The later one is closer to the original and articulates emancipation claims more faithfully. This probably has to do with the fact that the Polish emancipation de-bate was already more developed in the 1870s. That seems to confirm a funda-mental thesis of Translations Studies that translation not only communicates the message of the source text but also comprises an inscription of the host culture’s current standards and needs. Thus, the novels by Schwartz were initially read as popular literature, and over time they were perceived as socially engaged literature (Tendenzroman), which corresponded to the Polish nationalistic program.

Opis:
Omenjene premike signalizirajo nezadostljive retorično-pragmatične kompetence prevajalca. Zaradi nastalih pomenskih izgub postanejo izrazitejše univerzalne lastnosti junaka, roman pa se zdi za sekundarnega sprejemnika atraktiven — saj se z obravnavano problematiko lažje poistoveti.
Goran Vojnovic’s novel "Čefurji raus!" in Tomasz Łukaszewicz’s Polish translation is undoubtedly an opportunity to commune with cultural otherness, and, simultaneously, it touches upon the issue of seeking one’s identity in the face of multiculturalism. The translator undertook a very difficult and ambitious task. In the translation of the novel, which deals with the issue of multiculturalism and subculture, the difficulties the translator is confronted with are being multiplied. The comparative analysis of the original and the translation of the novel reveals that Čefur’s identity in the translation has gained more universal frames than in the original. It is mainly because of the cultural barrier which, for the translator, is a strong differentiation between main characters’ language in terms of their nationality. It is a means of conveying vital information as well as a source of characters’ identification which in the original is reduced. Unfortunately the translator did not make an attempt to individualize the characters’ speech using, for example, different language registers or elements of slang, humour, or vulgarity. At the same time, some of the translator’s choices either sharpen the opposition friend-stranger on the basis of which the characters define their attitude to the surroundings and shape their own identity or enhance the familiar character of the relations which take place within Čefurian community. At the stylistic level, the main characters’ language is more crude and limited in comic elements. And thus, in the Polish context, Čefur appears to be more obscene and less sensitive. These displacements give evidence to the translator’s inefficient rhetorical and pragmatic abilities. Despite the fact that, as a consequence of semantic losses the universal features of the main character’s identity are clearer, the novel may become attractive to secondary readers because of the possibility of identification with the analysed issue.

In the article, a problem of translation of the old Serbian literary texts into Polish is discussed together with the basic mechanisms of the reception process of creativity revealed by the Orthodox Slavs from the Balkan region, that is, in other words, the works arisen in the circle of the Slaviae Orthodoxae and their presence in the Polish culture’s space which belonged to the circle of the Slaviae Latinae. The considerations regard the essence and function of translation, presence and absence of translated literature - its initial version in the target space, and their foundation is located in the collections of translations existing in the Polish reading circuit. The issue of the presence or position of the old South Slavonic literatures, namely, the old Serbian texts in their Polish translation, is featured in several possible perspectives. The problem is exposed in the aspect of these texts’ peripheral character and literary genetics. By dint of the first reference, a phenomenon of asymmetry in the realm of translated literatures is emphasized, which results from the domination of the so-called world literatures and the marginalization of the so-called small literatures along with the translated literary texts’ place - their initial (Old Church Slavonic) status from the view-point of the target (Polish) culture’s space, and their situation in this specific polysystem. The genetic studies’ path, however, is used in order to expose a form of the translated literature’s presence (old Serbian texts in their Polish translation), and to indicate the strategy of its introduction, namely, anthology as a supporting platform of the initial (source) literature in the space of the target culture together with its presentation, dialogical, and intercultural function derived from the authorized genre. In the article’s conclusion, the author accentuates the fact that the collections or individual publications of the old Serbian works, omitting various values of the particular projects and realizations, exist in the Polish reading circuit in order to reflect largely their presence status, knowledge, and need for those concrete South Slavonic literature.

Opis:
The article provides an overview of Slovenian translations of Polish literature in the 2019’s and 2020’s and reviewers’ responses to these works. A total of 23 translations of books were published in 2019, including five literary works (three collections of poetry and two novels). Among the 13 published translations of the following year there were eight literary works (one drama, a collection of short stories, three novels and three collections of poetry). The publishing of e-books also increased significantly in 2020. The published translations give Slovenian readers access to familiar, mostly world-renowned authors such as O. Tokarczuk, Z. Herbert, W. Szymborska, C. Miłosz, I. Karpowicz, while works by I. Ostachowicz, B. Nowicka, A. Kulisiewicz, J. Małecki, R. Franczak, and K. Dąbrowska were translated into Slovenian for the first time. With the exception of J. Kochanowski’s drama, all of the literary works translated were from the second half of the 20th century or the 21st century.
Poleg treh otroških in dveh neleposlovnih, je bilo prevedenih osem leposlovnih del: ena drama, trije romani, ena zbirka kratkih zgodb in tri zbirke poezije.

Opis:
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery (1908) enjoys unprecedented popularity in Poland and has played a considerable role in the shaping of modern Polish culture. As many as fourteen different translations of the fi rst volume of the series have been published; moreover, there exists an active Polish fandom of Montgomery’s oeuvre. The authors of this article briefl y discuss the cultural and social aspects of this phenomenon which was triggered off in 1911 by Rozalia Bernsteinowa’s Polish translation of Anne of Green Gables. Her translation, still regarded as the canonical text, greatly altered the realities of the original novel. As a result, in Poland Anne of Green Gables has the status of a children’s classic, whereas readers in the English-speaking world have always treated it as an example of the sub-genre of juvenile college (school) girls’ literature. The identity of the Polish translator of L.M. Montgomery’s book remains a mystery, and even the name on the cover may well be pen name (though, at any rate, it strongly suggests that she must have belonged to the Jewish intelligentsia of the early 20th century). What we do know about her for fact is that she was a translator of German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and English literature. Comparing Rozalia Bernsteinowa’s Polish text to its English original has been a subject of many Polish B.A. and M.A. theses. The argument of this article is that her key reference for was not the English text, but that of the fi rst Swedish translation by Karin Jensen named Anne på Grönkulla (1909).

This text is a complement to the presented a year ago in the translation into Polish, Jacques Chaplain’s review which is a fragmentary overview of the three volume monograph by a worldknown physicist Emmanuel Desurvire, devoted to his ancestor, Karol Edmund Chojecki (1822−1899). Source materials, meticulously collected by the French biographer — family archives and other documents that were not printed before — enable us to get to know closely this Polish emigrant of the era of Romanticism, known in France under the pseudonym Charles Edmond, inter alia of the side of various, closer or further relationships with the representatives of French culture, science and politics of that time (such as Gustave Flaubert, Georges Sand, Louis Blanc or Georges Clemenceau), as well as his own creative achievements (in the fields of playwriting, dramaturgy, publicism and art of translation) and their twentieth century reception. Desurvire’s work — of impressive size and substantive content — has been currently published for the second time. The second edition, revised and bearing indices is completed with the two-volume supplement.

Opis:
In relation to the question of by what means the Belarusian newspaper „Naša niva“ conceptualizes Belarusian national space, and, simultaneously, Belarusian national literature the article discusses the profiling and function of Polish literature and writers within the newspaper. An analysis of the corpus of translations and of the selection and evaluation of authors and literary phenomena reveals strategies of dissimilation (getting visible) and, more important, of appropriation of literary resources (gaining dignity). Discursive strategies of ikonifying and hybridizing discern representatives of Polish literature as either Polish ‘proper’ („close but alien“), or as Polish ‘improper’ (actually Belarusian). Thus, the presentation of Polish literature is part of „Naša niva“’s general strategy to conceptualize and establish a Belarusian literary tradition.

Opis:
This article outlines the approach adopted by Władysław Syrokomla (the pen name of Ludwik Kondratowicz) in his translation of Latin verse and examines, by analyzing some of the poems he translated into Polish, how it worked in practice. He believed that the translator should strive for an empathic attunement to the writers voice (Einfühlung) while ‘remaining oneself’ and that abandoning ‘slavish imitation’ was the best way to animate a poem (an approach much criticized by philological authorities). These ideas are discussed in the fi rst part of the article; the second part contains analyses of his translations of Latin odes written by Maciej Sarbiewski, i.e. Ode I 19 (Ad caelestem adspirat patriam), II 3 (Ad suam testudinem), and IV 12 (Ad Ianum Libinium. Solitudinem suam excusat). Syrokomla does not engage in any intertextual games with the ancients; instead, he adapts the original to the formal and stylistic conventions of his time, most notably the Romantic concept of the poem as a projection of a poetic consciousness (‘ego’). In effect, Sarbiewski’s (neo) classical poetic personas become versions of the Romantic hero, most conspicuously in the case of Ode IV 12.
