Artykuł przedstawia tłumaczenie humoru, skupiając się na polskiej adaptacji filmu Red Notice (Czerwona nota). Poprzez badanie wzajemnego oddziaływania kultury i języka, analiza podkreśla rolę tłumacza jako mediatora kulturowego. Przez przykłady dialogów zawierające zwroty idiomatyczne i odniesienia kulturowe, artykuł ukazuje, jak polska wersja nie tylko wiernie tłumaczy elementy humorystyczne, lecz często je wzbogaca. Sukces tych adaptacji wiąże się z umiejętnością tłumacza w odwzorowywaniu leksykalnych i kulturowych odniesień, tworząc wersję, która zachwyca odbiorców docelowych. Wyniki analizy podkreślają, że tłumaczenie humoru jest sztuką, która ma wpływ na komunikację międzykulturową.

The paper raises the question of the role of Biblical tradition in the transfer and adaptation of modern ideas in cultures rooted in Eastern-Orthodox tradition. The subject of reflection is the narrative about St. Clement of Ohrid, the most famous disciple of SS. Cyril and Methodius, and its various literary paraphrases during the interwar period in Bulgaria, in the context of modernist reading of the Bible, as well as the ambivalent experience of secularization among the local intellectual elites.
W artykule poruszono kwestię roli tradycji biblijnej w transferze i adaptacji idei nowoczesności na gruncie kultur prawosławnych. Przedmiotem namysłu jest narracja o św. Klemensie z Ochrydy, najsłynniejszym uczniu św. św. Cyryla i Metodego, oraz jej literackie parafrazy z okresu międzywojennego w Bułgarii — rozpatrywane w kontekście modernistycznego odczyt(yw)ania Biblii, a także ambiwalentnego doświadczenia sekularyzacji ze strony lokalnych elit intelektualnych.

Autorka przygląda się najnowszym hitom kinowym jako materiałowi umożliwiającemu nie tylko ciekawą dyskusję w klasie, poświęconą strategiom translatorskim, ale także, a może przede wszystkim traktuje tytuły, jako przedmiot zdobywania wiedzy o języku i kulturze. Tytuły filmowe i sposoby ich przekładania z obcych języków są w tekście przedstawione jako element zajęć, który może pomóc rozwijać u uczących się kompetencję językową, a zatem umiejętność, która często bywa pomijana w tradycyjnym modelu kształcenia językowego, skupionym głównie na poprawności gramatycznej i odtwarzaniu wzorów językowych.
This article is dedicated to the issue of translating film titles. The author examines the latest blockbusters as a material enabling not only an interesting class discussion on translation strategies, but also, or perhaps foremost, approach to titles as instruments for acquiring the knowledge of a language and culture. Film titles and methods of translating them from foreign languages are presented in the text as a class component that could help develop language competence in learners, i.e. a skill that is often overlooked in the traditional language education model, which focuses primarily on grammatical correctness and reconstruction of language patterns.

Das Ziel dieses Beitrags ist die Analyse der Realienbezeichnungen, die in den deutschen Reisekatalogen enthalten sind. Als Grundlage der Untersuchung dienen die deutschen Reisekataloge ,,Chamäleon“ und „Gebeco“. Im Rahmen der Analyse werden Beispiele der Realienbezeichnungen aus den oben genannten Katalogen ausgewählt, dem entsprechenden Typ der Realienbezeichnung zugeordnet und anschließend besprochen. Der Schwerpunkt dieses Beitrags liegt ebenfalls auf den möglichen Wiedergabeverfahren der ausgewählten Realienbezeichnungen, die bei ihrer Übersetzung ins Polnische Translationsprobleme bereiten. Der Beitrag wird mit Schlussfolgerungen abgeschlossen, in denen darauf hingewiesen wird, wie wichtig für die korrekte Wiedergabe der Realienbezeichnungen das Verständnis des kulturellen Hintergrunds sowohl für die Ausgangs- als auch für die Zielsprache ist. In den Urlaubsangeboten, die in den Reisekatalogen enthalten sind, kommen landes- und kulturspezifische Bezeichnungen zu Orten in der ganzen Welt vor, die den Reiselustigen in großer Zahl zur Verfügung stehen. Man kann also feststellen, dass verschiedene Länder und Kulturen ständig neue kulturspezifische Wörter bzw. Ausdrücke mit sich bringen. Darum ist beim Lesen von Urlaubsangeboten ein bestimmtes Weltwissen erforderlich. Obwohl die Reiseinteressierten keine genauen Bedeutungen der kulturspezifischen Wörter kennen müssen, sollten sie eine allgemeine Vorstellung von den landestypischen fremden Begriffen haben. Darüber hinaus sind zumindest die Grundkenntnisse der englischen Sprache erforderlich, da in Reisekatalogen viele Anglizismen auftreten. Die Urlaubsangebote enthalten aber auch kurze englische Slogans, die meistens weder ins Deutsche noch in eine andere Sprache übersetzt werden. Manche Wörter, die weithin bekannt sind, wie z. B. pizza oder safari, bedürfen keiner Übersetzung oder zusätzlicher Explikation. Es gibt jedoch einige Ausdrücke, die von den meisten Lesern nicht verstanden werden, weil sie weniger gebräuchlich sind oder sehr spezifische, komplexe Bedeutungen verbergen. Daher werden in diesem Beitrag für solche Realien die bestmöglichen Übersetzungslösungen ins Polnische vorgeschlagen.
The aim of this paper is to analyse culture-bound units that appear in German travel catalogues. The following German travel catalogues constitute the research material: “Chamäleon” and “Gebeco”. Selected examples of the culture-specific expressions from the above-mentioned catalogues are subjected to the analysis, assigned to the corresponding type and subsequently discussed. The paper focuses also on the methods of rendering techniques of the selected culture-bound units, which encounter translations problems while being translated into Polish. The paper’s conclusions point out the importance of cultural background understanding for both the source and the target language, in order to accurately render the culture-specific items. Country- and culture-specific foreign terms appearing in the travel offers refer to the places all over the world and are available in great numbers for people interested in excursions. It can thus be noticed that different countries and cultures constantly bring with them new culture-specific words or expressions. Hence, a certain world knowledge is required while reading holiday offers. Even though readers interested in travels do not need to know the exact meanings of the culture-specific expressions, they should have a general idea of country-specific foreign terms. Besides, at least a basic knowledge of the English language is indispensable, because the travel catalogues contain a plethora of Anglicisms. Tourist offers also contain short slogans in English, which are usually translated neither into German nor into the other language. Some words that are commonly used, such as pizza or safari, do not require translation or additional explication. However, there are some expressions that are not comprehensible for most of the readers because of the fact that they are less common or conceal very specific, complex meanings. Therefore, this paper aims to present the best potential translation solutions for such culture-specific expressions into Polish.

The paper aims to discuss Polish terms that name authority bodies under the administrative law and their English equivalents. The Polish terms under analysis appear in the first Division of the Polish Code of Administrative Procedure of 14 June 1960 and the English equivalents of each Polish term researched have been suggested in the Polish Code of Administrative Procedure translation into English. The research problem is to determine the translation methods applied and to verify whether translation methods used in the Polish-English translation of the above terms which have been determined as culture-specific items appear among translation methods applied when translating culture-specific elements suggested by Hejwowski (2007). Furthermore, to verify whether the mentioned translation methods appear among the translation methods discussed by Weston (1993) which are recommended to be applied while translating legal terms. The theoretical part of the paper includes a presentation of the definitions of a legal term, culture-specific item and the classification of translation methods by Hejwowski and Weston. The research stages include the comparison of definitions of source elements and definitions of their equivalents, as long as they appear in monolingual English law dictionaries.
Badanie ma na celu omówienie polskich terminów, które nazywają organy prawa administracyjnego oraz ich ekwiwalentów angielskich. Terminy polskie poddane analizie występują w pierwszym Dziale Kodeksu Postępowania Administracyjnego z dnia 14 czewca 1960 (KPA), natomiast omawiane ekwiwalenty zostały zastosowane w tłumaczeniu polskiego KPA na język angielski. Celem analizy jest określenie technik przekładowych zastosowanych w przekładzie elementów źródłowych oraz potwierdzenie lub zaprzeczenie tezie, zgodnie z którą techniki zastosowane w przekładzie omawianych elementów nacechowanych kulturowo występują w klasyfikacji technik zaproponowanych przez Hejwowskiego (2007) do stosowania w przekładzie elementów nacechowanych kulturowo. Ponadto należy zweryfikować, czy zastosowane techniki pojawiają się w klasyfikacji technik tłumaczeniowych wyróżnionych przez Westona (1993), służących do przekładu terminów prawnych. W części teoretycznej przedstawiono m.in. definicję terminu prawnego, elementu nacechowanego kulturowo oraz klasyfikacje technik tłumaczeniowych Hejwowskiego i Westona. Na etapy badania składa się m. in. porównanie definicji elementu źródłowego oraz jego ekwiwalentu, jeżeli występuje on w jednojęzycznym słowniku prawa angielskiego.

Two significant volumes dedicated to mediaeval studies which sparked an engaged reception in Poland of the work by the Annales school were Georges Duby and Robert Mandrou’s A History of French Civilization. From the 10th to 20th century and Jacques Le Goff’s Medieval Civilization 400–1500. Although they are without a doubt scientific books, their literary value places them in the popular science genre. As early as a few years after their publication, both books were successfully translated by Hanna Szumańska-Grossowa, which contributed to the popularisation of the knowledge about French history among Polish readers. It’s a great achievement of Szumańska-Grossowa, who translated into Polish both fiction and scientific books, to enable Polish readers of the 1960s and 1970s to freely familiarise themselves with the greatest achievements of French and, more broadly speaking, European humanities.

It is undoubtable that the immigration to the US is largely due to the steady ow of fresh minds and a new spirit that inuences the development of the American society. These new forces help protect the American society from the stagnation experienced in the Old World. The importance of immigrant experiences puts the United States on the brink of a very dicult, but often successful combination of the new and the old. Beyond question, this is true, especially regarding twentieth-century emigrants such as Eva Homan or the family of Alfred Kazin. Although Vladimir Nabokov having been himself an exception, not easy to categorize as writer, in his life as an ØmigrØ in the USA, he could also prove that the absorption of the American culture and language to a large extent took place, and was fruitful. For much of the twentieth century, the immigrant osmosis of the New World was associated with assimilation to the highly desirable, largely monolithic, English culture of the East Coast.

Postcolonial African literatures written in Portuguese build their identity by modifying existing linguistic and literary norms. One of its manifestations is including in writings elements of traditional orality. The orality becomes an indicator of identity, it differentiates literatures of colonies and ex-colonies from the one written in the metropolis, it allows to preserve and transmit popular wisdom and references to traditional forms. Although oral elements are an important part of the original, as they create a separate literary style and genre, they are often neutralized in translation. This unfavourable tendency may be the result of an unawareness regarding the importance of orality, lack of sensitivity and an attempt to adjust the translated text to the norms of the target literature. This work aims to gather and analyse different indicators of orality in African literatures written in Portuguese, to examine if and how they are transmitted in Polish translations. To do so, we follow the division of manifestations of orality elaborated by Walter Ong. The awareness of the role played by orality in the analysed texts and sensitivity to its indicators in the texts will allow translators to more consciously choose the strategies and techniques which enable them to show the original’s diversity to target recipients.

The research will focus on Polish cookery books and their Russian translations. A particular focus will be placed on translation series сookery book by Maria Lemnis and Henryk Vitry Książka kucharka dla samotnych i zakochanych. Translation specificity of both texts is reflected not only in ways of finding appropriate equivalents for cuisine-related terminology but also, among others, in communication tactics adopted by translators. This will allow to show specificity of this genre, its varieties and modifications in the context of social transformations, behaviours as well as author-reader relationship.
W artykule rozpatrywane są zagadnienia związane ze specyfiką przekładu polskich książek kucharskich na język rosyjski. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na serię translatorską tekstu Książka kucharka dla samotnych i zakochanych Marii Lemnis i Henryka Vitry. Przedmiotem analizy stały się różne decyzje translatorskie odnośnie do przekazania tytułu książki, aluzji kulturowych, przepisów kulinarnych, nazw potraw, ich składników oraz narzędzi kuchennych. Są one opisywane z uwzlędnieniem specyfiki gatunkwej tekstu, transformacji społecznych, modeli zachowań oraz stosunków nadawczo-odbiorczych.  
 В статье обращается внимание на польские поваренные книги в русских переводах. Предметом более подробного анализа является ряд переводов одного из текстов Марии Лемнис и Хенрика Витры, Książka kucharka dla samotnych i zakochanych. Разные переводческие решения, касающиеся передачи заглавия книги и сопутствующих ему паратекстов, сохранения или опущения фоновых знаний, а также способов представления рецептов, названий блюд, ингредиентов и кухонных принадлежностей, описываются с учетом жанровой специфики текста, социальных трансформаций, поведенческих моделей и отношений между отправителем и получателем информации.

Today’s internationalisation of scholarship necessitates its publication in English. This ever-more frequent requirement poses a particular challenge for many non-English art historians. The study of works of art typically starts with the description of the object under investigation. For a description to be accurate, a precise terminology is essential. Specialist terminology is normally created by the makers of particular types of objects, as well as international scholars conceptualising artistic phenomena, they do it in their working, usually native, languages. Multilingualism brings about particular conceptual challenges when developing domain-specific terminology and its translations into other languages. Additional challenges come forth when information is to be processed automatically. The complex relationship between particular material cultural heritage and its multilingual descriptions is discussed here, based on the terminology concerning the early modern Protestant church building as an expression of particular liturgical needs. Owing to the autonomy of national Protestant Churches, new arrangements of the church interior – in terms of its structure, fixtures and specific functions – were favoured, which the relevant naming and conceptualisation should reflect. The author focuses on some of the problems that arise when research findings are to be presented in a language other than the language(s) in which research was conducted.

Статья посвящена трем переводам стихотворения А.С.Пушкина «Зимнее утро». Для анализа взяты переводы, выполненные Н.Паниным (1888), его современником Ч.Э.Тернером (1899), и последний по времени перевод Р.Кларка (2016). Переводы данного стихотворения интересны для анализа, поскольку оно построено на антитезах. В статье рассматриваются пары «мороз» - «солнце», «ненастный вечер» - «солнечное утро», «тьма» - «сияние», ключевые понятия русской культуры «тоска» и «веселье», русская реалия «печь». Тексты переводов анализировались по методике медленного чтения. Анализ текстов показал, что переводчик может выступать и как исследователь. Р.Кларк ввел в свой перевод реалию, которой не было в оригинале. Artykuł skupia się na trzech przekładach poematu Aleksandra Puszkina "Zimowy poranek". Przekłady dokonane przez N. Panina (1888), przez współczesnego mu C.E. Turnera (1899), a także najnowszy przekład R. Clarke'a (2016) stały się przedmiotem analizy. Tłumaczenia tego wiersza są interesującym obiektem, ponieważ wiersz jest oparty na antytezach. W artykule przeanalizowano pary "mróz" - "słońce", "burzliwy wieczór" - "słoneczny poranek", "ciemność" - "blask", a także kluczowe pojęcia rosyjskiej kultury, takie jak "melancholia" i "zabawa", czy pojęcie z zakresu realiów "piec". Teksty tłumaczeń zostały przeanalizowane za pomocą techniki close reading. Badania pokazały, że tłumacz może pełnić również rolę badacza. R. Clarke wprowadził do swojego przekładu rzeczywistość, której brakowało w oryginalnym tekście. Tak więc wspomniany w wierszu rodzinny bereg staje się pewnym miejscem w pobliżu majątku Bernowo, gdzie Puszkin przyjechał jako gość.
The article focuses on three translations of Alexander Pushkin's poem "The Winter Morning". The translations made by N. Panin (1888), by his contemporary C.E. Turner (1899), and the most recent translation by R. Clarke (2016) were taken for the analysis. The translations of this poem are interesting for analysis because the poem is based on antitheses. The article examines the pairs "frost" - "sun", "stormy evening" - "sunny morning", "darkness" - "radiance", the key concepts of Russian culture "melancholy" and "fun", the Russian realia "oven". The texts of the translations were analyzed with the help of the close reading technique. The research showed that a translator can also act as a researcher. R. Clarke introduced into his translation a reality that was lacking in the original text. Thus, the mily bereg mentioned in the poem becomes a certain place near the Bernovo estate, where Pushkin came as a guest.

Although interlinear glosses theoretically involve providing the most exact native equivalent for each foreign item in the text (cf., e.g. Nida 2004: 161), they often prove to be much more than a mechanical process of creating lexical correspondences. One of the best examples of glossing which is a “conscious, occasionally very careful “interpretative translation”” (Nagucka 1997: 180), is the collection of 10th century glosses added by Aldred to the Latin text of the Lindisfarne Gospels. This oldest existing translation of the Gospels into English consists not only of a word‑for‑word renderings, since Aldred also used multiple glosses, marginal notes, and occasionally left the words unglossed. Thus, particular Latin words are often translated in several different ways. The present study focuses on words denoting objects and phenomena which were presumably unfamiliar or obscure to the Anglo‑Saxon audience. Those include items specific to the society, culture, as well as fauna and flora. The study shows various methods employed by the glossator to familiarise the concepts to the readers.

The article reconstructs selected motifs in the philosophy of Lin Yutang, a twentieth-century Chinese thinker, translator and editor, especially popular in the West, undertaken, as it were, on the margins of his work to explain and popularize Chinese culture and philosophy in the West. Lin reflects on issues such as how to effectively and accurately explain a radically alien civilization to the Western-educated reader, in his or her own language, and who can appoint himself as the representative of Chinese culture at all? As a bilingual author, Lin very accurately shows the state of suspension between two cultures, characteristic of an intercultural interpreter who attempts to simultaneously move within two disproportionate, culturally determined conceptual schemes.
W artykule rekonstruuję wybrane wątki refleksji Lin Yutanga, popularnego, zwłaszcza na Zachodzie, dwudziestowiecznego chińskiego myśliciela, tłumacza i redaktora, podejmowanej niejako na marginesie jego pracy na rzecz objaśniania i popularyzowania chińskiej kultury i filozofii na Zachodzie. Lin podejmuje namysł nad takimi zagadnieniami, jak: W jaki sposób skutecznie, a jednocześnie trafnie opowiedzieć czytelnikowi wykształconemu w kulturze zachodniej, w jego własnym języku, o radykalnie obcej cywilizacji? Kto w ogóle może mianować samego siebie reprezentantem kultury chińskiej? Jako autor dwujęzyczny Lin nader celnie ukazuje stan zawieszenia, stan bycia pomiędzy, charakterystyczny dla tłumacza międzykulturowego, który podejmuje próbę jednoczesnego poruszania się w obrębie dwóch niewspółmiernych, kulturowo zdeterminowanych schematów pojęciowych.

This paper addresses a phenomenon of the international success of Swedish female writers in the 19th century. I have focused on the Polish translations of Marie Sophie Schwartz’s works, which became extremely popular in the 1860’s and 1870’s, judging from the number of books translated in comparison to other Swedish bestselling writers. One of the most important issues for Schwartz was emancipation, specifically women’s right to education, employment and econo-mic autonomy. Her novel Emancipation Frenzy was translated into Polish in 1865 and 1876. Both translations differ as to the accuracy in rendering the emancipa-tion message. The earlier translation tends to omit or soften the author’s radical opinions on emancipation, which flattens the novel’s progressive message. The later one is closer to the original and articulates emancipation claims more faithfully. This probably has to do with the fact that the Polish emancipation de-bate was already more developed in the 1870s. That seems to confirm a funda-mental thesis of Translations Studies that translation not only communicates the message of the source text but also comprises an inscription of the host culture’s current standards and needs. Thus, the novels by Schwartz were initially read as popular literature, and over time they were perceived as socially engaged literature (Tendenzroman), which corresponded to the Polish nationalistic program.

Tematem artykułu jest zbadanie wpływu jaki może wywierać wydawca na sposób i zakres odzwierciedlenia w tekście przekładu elementów trzeciej kultury. Omówione zostaną kolejno: kwestia obcości w przekładzie, zjawisko elementów trzeciej kultury oraz zagadnienie funkcjonowania patronatu w systemie literackim. Badanie będzie miało formę analizy translatologicznej. Za materiał badawczy posłuży opowiadanie „The Room in Le Dragon Volant” ze zbioru "In a Glass Darkly", autorstwa XIX-wiecznego, irlandzkiego pisarza  Sheridana Le Fanu oraz przekład utworu na język polski, „Pokój w gospodzie Le Dragon Volant”, autorki artykułu, pochodzący z tomu "W ciemnym zwierciadle". Omówiony zostanie sposób przekładu wybranych wtrętów francuskojęzycznych, zwrotu adresatywnego i dwóch realogizmów oraz zalecenia redaktora dotyczące sposobu ich transpozycji w języku polskim, jak również wynik uzgodnień pomiędzy redaktorem i tłumaczką oraz wpływ ostatecznego rozwiązania na poziom obcości tekstu docelowego. Artykuł zakończy prezentacja wniosków odnośnie wpływu wydawnictwa na przekład elementów trzeciej kultury i roli jaką tłumacz odgrywa w procesie ich adekwatnego odzwierciedlenia w języku docelowym.
The subject of the article is a research into the influence exerted by the publisher on the way and scope of rendering third culture elements in the translated text. The concept of the foreign in translation, idea of third culture elements and the issue of patronage in the literary system will be discussed in turn. The research material is a story in English titled “The Room in Le Dragon Volant” from a collection In a Glass Darkly, written by the 19th century Irish writer, Sheridan Le Fanu and its translation into Polish by the author of the article, published under the title "Pokój w gospodzie Le Dragon Volant", in a collection W ciemnym zwierciadle. The research will involve an analysis of translation of selected examples of third culture elements, a term of address and two proper nouns in French and the discussion of recommendations from the editor regarding their transposition in the Polish language. The result of negotiations between the editor and the translator and the consequences of the adopted solution for the achieved level of foreignness in the target text will be presented. Finally, conclusions regarding the influence exerted by the publisher on the way of translation of third culture elements and the role of translator in the process of their rendering in the target language will be formulated.
