Since the mid-twentieth century, there has been a discussion in the academy about “two cultures”: humanities and sciences and the so-called third culture. In this article I outline the history of this debate. I also present new trends in contemporary humanistic reflection: posthumanism and transhumanism, which are based on interdisciplinary research. I am also describing the projects and the output of several currents of contemporary art: robotic art, bio art and bio-robotic art.

The article focuses on the analysis of a set of principles concerning the development of artificial intelligence, which were agreed upon a the Asilomar international conference in January 2017. The declaration was signed by leading scholar in the field of transhumanism and representatives of the hi-tech enterprises. The purpose of the article is to lay out the core assumptions behind this established set of norms that aim at the creation of so call „friendly AI” as well as their practical implications.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza zestawu zasad uzgodnionych na międzynarodowej konferencji w Asilomar ze stycznia 2017 roku dotycząca rozwoju sztucznej inteligencji. Sygnatariuszami porozumienia są czołowi badacze tematyki związanej z transhumanizmem, ale także przedstawiciele koncernów z sektora hi-tech. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie założeń stojących za deklarowanym szkicem norm, mających na celu wytworzenie tzw. Przyjaznej sztucznej inteligencji oraz ich praktycznych konsekwencji.

While drawing from the philosophy of Bernard Stiegler throughout the paper, I commence by highlighting Zoltan Istvan’s representation of transhumanism in the light of its role in politics. I continue by elaborating on the notion of the promise of eternal life. After that I differentiate between subjects that are proper for philosophy (such as the mind or whether life is worth living) and science (measurable and replicable). The arguments mostly concern mind-uploading and at the same time I elaborate on a simple critique of mind-body dualism, which is one of the key imagined orders exploitable by technologies in the narratives of transhumanism present in popular culture. This is reframed as a problem of action. The focus of this article is on the claim that certain transhumanisms are dangerous forms of Neo-Darwinism. It comes from a critical assessment of capital and the exploitation of bodies through market forces. Entropy is a process of growing disorder, while neganthropy is an anthropological struggle against exploitation, not only of bodies, but of all ecosystems of the Earth. The arguments of Stiegler from a collection of lectures are recapitulated, and his claims are presented through the prism of transhuman narrative, with a particular focus on Christian Salmon's position in the book Storytelling: Bewitching the Modern Mind.
Czerpiąc w całym tekście z filozofii Bernarda Stieglera, rozpoczynam od prezentacji transhumanizmu Zoltana Istvana w świetle jego roli w polityce. Kontynuuję rozwijając koncept obietnicy życia wiecznego. Następnie rozróżniam tematy właściwe dla filozofii (takie jak umysł lub to, czy życie jest warte życia) i nauki (to, co mierzalne i powtarzalne). Przedstawiam argumenty dotyczące przede wszystkim transferu umysłu (mind-uploading), a jednocześnie omawiam prostą krytykę dualizmu umysł-ciało, który jest jednym z kluczowych, wykorzystywanych przez technologie wyobrażonych porządków w narracjach transhumanizmu obecnych w kulturze popularnej. Przeformułowuję to jako problem działania. Artykuł skupia się na twierdzeniu, że niektóre transhumanizmy są niebezpiecznymi formami neodarwinizmu. Wynika to z krytycznej oceny kapitału i eksploatacji ciał przez siły rynkowe. Entropia jest procesem narastającej dezorganizacji, podczas gdy negantropia jest antropologiczną walką z eksploatacją nie tylko ciał, ale wszystkich ekosystemów Ziemi. Argumenty Stieglera ze zbioru wykładów zyskują podsumowanie, a jego twierdzenia przedstawiane są przez pryzmat transhumanistycznej narracji, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem stanowiska Christiana Salmona wyłożonym w książce: Storytelling: Bewitching the Modern Mind.

The issue of a human’s identity, as well as his role and place in the surrounding world is a prominent theme in terms of a reflection on human intellect and capabilities of a mind. As such - in the context of contemplation about human nature and the quintessence of being - where technological development, being practically unlimited by now, can lead to? The  visions of technological personality and indomitable technological expansion, are present in practically every aspect of human activity - from a globalized political macroplane, through economic, social or cultural ones, local societies functionalities mesolevel to everyday human relations microplanes. It raises a question about the both aforementioned concepts being unavoidable. Are human actions in fact leading to a certain, peculiar milestone in a future humanity development, which will result in every present prediction about humanity’s identity being outdated? The article touches upon theoretical speculation about axiological and economic consequences of transhumanism.
Problematyka tożsamości człowieka, jego roli i miejsca w otaczającym świecie zajmuje poczesne miejsce w refleksji nad ludzkim intelektem i możliwościami umysłu. Do czego zatem, w kontekście rozważań nad naturą ludzką i kwintesencją jestestwa, przyczynić się może praktycznie nieograniczony już postęp technologiczny? Czy wizja technologicznej osobliwości i niepohamowanej ekspansji techniki, wkraczającej praktycznie w każdą sferę ludzkiej aktywności – począwszy od zglobalizowanej makropłaszczyzny politycznej, ekonomicznej, społecznej, kulturowej przez mezopoziom funkcjonowania społeczności lokalnych, a skończywszy na mikropłaszczyźnie codziennych relacji międzyludzkich – jest nieuchronna? Czy ludzkie działania faktycznie dążą do pewnego osobliwego punktu w przyszłym rozwoju cywilizacji, po przekroczeniu którego wszelkie przewidywania, co do form istnienia człowieka staną się nieaktualne? Artykuł stanowi teoretyczne rozważania nad aksjologicznymi i ekonomicznymi konsekwencjami transhumanizmu.

Autor w pierwszym rzędzie przedstawia sześć rozumień cielesności według Toma Ziemke'go, w tym również takie, które przybliżają transhumanistyczną człowieka przyszłości. Następnie analizuje rolę ciała w projekcie postczłowieka, aby w sekcji końcowej ukazać dwuznaczne, ambiwalentne nastawienie do cielesności, stanowiące centralny problemat artykułu.
The article examines the relation between transhumanism and the notion of corporeity. The author presents six approaches to corporeity according to Tom Ziemke, including those which are favorable to the transhumanist vision of the future. Then the author examines the role of the human body in the transhumanist project of the posthuman. In the last, central section it is argued that transhumanism displays an ambivalent view towards corporeity.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie, krótkie rozwinięcie oraz krytyka pedagogicznych implikacji transhumanizmu. Stawiam hipotezę, iż w odniesieniu do głównych postulatów tego, coraz bardziej znaczącego zarówno w kulturze popularnej jak i w środowisku akademickim, ruchu techno-progresywnego uzasadniona jest mowa o próbie urzeczowienia człowieka. Owe urzeczowienie polegałoby na biotechnologicznych interwencjach, mających na celu udoskonalenie ciała ludzkiego, co – jak będę chciał dowieść – kłóciłoby się z podstawowymi ideami i założeniami edukacji humanistycznej, a także posthumanistycznej pedagogiki rzeczy. W pierwszej części omówię kluczową dla transhumanizmu koncepcję „ulepszania człowieka” (Human Enhancement) oraz pojęcie ludzkiej doskonałości. Z kolei w drugiej części postaram się odnieść te idee do podstawowych dla pedagogiki humanistycznej obrazów człowieka jako homo absconditus i homo educandus. Wyniki moich refleksji mogą być postrzegane jako wyraz naglącej potrzeby powstania szerokiej debaty pedagogicznej nad możliwościami oraz zagrożeniami płynącymi z transhumanizmu, albowiem nawet częściowa realizacja jego postulatów mogłaby już w niedalekiej przyszłości przyczynić się do załamania się podstawowych zasad praktyki edukacyjnej.
The aim of the article is presentation, short elaboration and critique of the pedagogical implications of transhumanism. My hypothesis is that it is valid to refer to the crucial postulates of this techno-progressive movement, which is contemporary gaining popularity within the pop culture and academic society, as an attempt to objectify the human being. This process would consist of biotechnological interventions aiming at perfection of the human body, which—as I will try to indicate—would clash with both the basic ideas and assumptions of humanistic education and the conception of pedagogy of things as well. In the first part I will elaborate the crucial transhumanist conception of “human enhancement” and the notion of human perfection. In the second part I will refer these ideas to the fundamental pedagogical images of a man as homo absconditus and homo educandus. The results of my reflections can be perceived as an enunciation of the exigency for establishing a broad pedagogical debate on the possibilities and dangers deriving from transhumanism, since even a partial realization of its postulates could eventually lead to a breakdown of crucial principles of educational praxis.

The following article is to introduce the reader into a cultural and intellectual movement whose aim is to identify the need for improvement in human life in the sphere of physicality as well as mentality with the aid of modern technologies – transhumanism. With the dramatic change in the perception of technology, transhumanist welcome the opportunity to improve cognitive skills, help to perpetuate human happiness, or increase longevity. Although the opponents of the transhumanist thought dismiss it as “the world’s most dangerous idea,” the adversaries advocate that the alternation of human form is both practical and reasonable. With the use of modern technology, enthusiasts of transhumanism try to prove that the human body needs to be re-invented in order to transcend the natural limitations. In my work I will try to tackle the problem of human body being currently subject to gradual transition from Homo Sapiens to Robo Sapiens, the process of ‘becoming’ a cyborg. By incorporating bodily augmentation, contemporary artists such as Stelarc or Neil Harbisson cast a light on the change of physical form, as well as the definition of being human. Evoking much controversy, transhumanism brings a completely new dimension to the understanding of the current human condition.

The Artemis Fowl series (2001-2012) by Eoin Colfer is a surprising blend of a James-Bond-style thriller, a science-fiction novel and folklore, targeted at young adult audience. It features a teenage criminal mastermind, who decides to kidnap a fairy for ransom and thus repair his family’s failing fortune. Doing so, he discovers that what people consider magic is in fact fairy technology. In spite of highly technical jargon in which the novel was written, the freshness of the treatment of the topic of fairies and the humorous narration won Colfer an instant success and a shower of awards (among others, shortlisted for the Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year 2001). However, somewhat in spite of the action-packed content, the strength and the attraction of the novels lies in their opening themselves to the problems which appear in the current discussion as a result of the advancements in science. Colfer presents for consideration such issues as cloning, experimenting on animals or genetic engineering. The juvenile quest to discover one’s true self, coupled with bioethical and technoethical concerns, makes the series a powerful question about the place of human beings in the age of the rapid scientific development and about our identity. Embodying many of post- and transhuman concerns, it echoes such works as Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto or Hayles’s How We Became Posthuman. For instance, in the posthuman world the body is essentially malleable: dependent on the mind and the willpower of an individual. It can be upgraded by transplantations and modifications, utilizing genetic engineering and the newest technologies. Colfer brings it to attention especially in the construction of such heroes as Opal Koboi, Butler and Artemis himself. Human enhancement breaches the boundaries of the “natural,” provoking questions about its limitations. The author also undertakes the questions of androgyny and unclear gender roles, resulting from tampering with the traditional image of the body. In the article, I would like to focus on the aspects of the cycles concerning the search for human identity, as the most prominent feature of the cycle. As a contemporary literature’s answer to the current changes, the books should render a fairly accurate picture of the important questions of the present era.
Seria Artemis Fowl (2001-2012) autorstwa Eoina Colfera to ciekawa propozycja dla młodych czytelników będąca zaskakującym połączeniem elementów sensacyjnych rodem z filmów o Jamesie Bondzie, powieści science fiction i konwencji ludowej. Jej główny bohater to nastoletni przestępca-geniusz, który postanawia porwać dla okupu elficzkę, by w ten sposób odwrócić los swojej rodziny. Odkrywając świat wróżek, orientuje się, że to, co ludzie nazywają magią, jest w istocie niczym innym jak zaawansowaną technologią. Mimo mocno technicznego żargon stosowanego przez pisarza, dzięki niezwykle świeżemu podejściu do tematyki baśniowej i prowadzeniu narracji w humorystyczny sposób, Colfer odniósł natychmiastowy sukces i otrzymał za swoje książki wiele prestiżowych nagród (m.in. Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year w 2001). I choć powieści te pełne są atrakcyjnej akcji, ich największa wartość wydaje się leżeć w sposobie, w jaki wpisują się one w aktualną dyskusję na tematy związane z postępem technologicznym, takie jak klonowanie, eksperymenty na zwierzętach czy inżynieria genetyczna. Młodzieńcze poszukiwanie własnej tożsamości w połączeniu z rozważaniami na temat bioetyki i najnowszych technologii, sprawiają, że seria skłania czytelników do rozważań na temat kondycji człowieka w epoce szybkiego rozwoju technologicznego. Podejmując liczne zagadnienia z zakresu transhumanizmu, książki Colfera nawiązują niejako do „A Cyborg Manifesto” Dony Haraway czy „How We Became Posthuman” N. Katherine Hayles. I tak ,zgodnie z koncepcją postczłowieka, ciało podlega tu umysłowi oraz woli jednostki i jako takie może być ulepszane przy pomocy rozwiązań z zakresu transplantologii, genetycznych ulepszeń czy najnowszych technologii. U Colfera widać to wyraźnie w kreowaniu takich postaci jak Opal Koboi, Butler czy sam Artemis. Ciągłe ulepszanie człowieka narusza granice wyznaczone przez naturę, skłaniając do refleksji na temat jej granic. Autor podejmuje też zagadnienia związane z androgynią i niejasnymi rolami płciowymi będącymi konsekwencją tak daleko posuniętego ingerowania w ludzkie ciało.

Opis:
This essay examines the ‘posthuman condition’ and its critical relevance to Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent (1907). It will be shown that oppressive examples of constitution-altering technologies find complex and recurrent depiction throughout the novel, often dismantling and redefining the physiques of their respective hosts. Most centrally however, it will be argued that Conrad criticises this notion of the posthuman condition through menacing depictions of ‘the Professor’, crucially emphasising the instability and endangerment potentially associated with the technologically-enhanced constitution. To this end, brief descriptions of The Secret Agent and contemporary conceptions of the posthuman condition will be provided. Thereafter, I shall explore the novel’s disquieting depictions of prosthetic technology and their detrimental effects upon the organic constitution, before then interrogating Conrad’s treatment of the posthuman condition and the devastation apparently inherent to this state of mechanical alteration. Finally, the novel’s ultimate denunciation of the posthuman condition will be considered, with particular reference to the death of Stevie and the numerous depictions of his fragmented body.

The following paper focuses on typification and cataloguing of the various manifestations of body decorating and enhancing in selected novels and stories, and also tries to examine their meanings, what changes they bring, what attitude of the authors towards technological progress they reveal and what social/cultural phenomena and processes they reflect. The paper also questions the upgrades of the human mind and the transformations of humans into some other forms of existence. Nine contemporary dystopian novels and five short stories have been studied for the purposes of this research. The methodological framework consists of texts that question the enhancement of the human body conducted in various ways, especially through biotechnology, bioengineering, cybernetics, robotics, etc.

W artykule autorka porusza problem ciała w Wielorybach i ćmach. Dziennikach oraz w Królu Szczepana Twardocha i odnosi ją do sportu, transhumanizmu i kultury gwałtu. Badaczka wychodzi z założenia, że powieść popularna, którą jest Król, mówi nie tylko o stosunku zbiorowości do przedwojennej historii Polski (a szczególnie relacji Polaków i Żydów), ale reprezentuje też określoną ideologię, lekceważoną przez recenzentów. A to właśnie ta historia powinna zostać w pierwszej kolejności poddana analizie przez badaczy twórczości Twardocha.
In the article the author tackles the bodily aspects of two recent books by Szczepan Twardoch: Wieloryby i ćmy. Dzienniki (Whales and Moths. Diaries) and Król (The King) in the context of sports, transhumanism and rape culture. The main thesis is that as a pulp novel Król not only depicts a popular image of pre-war Poland (and in particular its Polish-Jewish relations) but also represents a specific yet often ignored ideological approach. The core aim is to fill this critical gap by identifying and analyzing this approach.

The aim of this paper is to show source inspirations on which anthropological model of transhumanist doctrine has been built. Fundamental thesis of transhumanism says that there is possibility of transgressing the natural condition of man through the various latest technologies what suppose to develop more excellent human’s essential form. The author turns attention to the fact that there is a category of possible beings and ontology of transfer adopted by transhumanist doctrine and that there is no essential differentiation between two notions such as „being” and „product”. For that reason it is impossible to apply aparatus of Thomisitic metaphysics to that doctrine. Another element which shows discrepancy of both stances is, analysed by the author, opposition between materialistic-naturalistic transhumanist anthropological model, called on the ground of natural science encephalocentrism and hylemorfism proper for Christian antropology. The author shows irrationality of many anthropological ideas of transhumanist doctrine and also presents its two main sources. The first is ideologization in the area of natural science whose extreme appearance we find in reductionist encephalocentrism. The second is extrapolation of reductionist encephalocentrism stance along with stances of technological probabilism into religious domain of anti-Christian antic gnostic systems. The author ultimately states that transhumanism is ideology which skillfully transforms gnostic mysticism into „new garments” of the latest technologies and for that, it effectively resonates in a contemporary irrational anti-culture.
