Opis:
This paper deals with internal household strategies for regaining control over quality, safety and the meaning of food, as applied by people in Poland. Using material gathered by interviewing representatives of twogenerations, the paper analyses the bottom-up, scattered and intra-family solutions woven into the structure of everyday life. Although alternative food networks and food activism are emerging nowadays as an important area of criticism towards contemporary food production and supply, the paper goes back to the choices made within the mainstream food system. Although the interviewees could be classified as middle-class and for this reason are expected to eagerly adapt to new lifestyle patterns, the research material allows one to focus not only on the novelty in people’s culinary choices, but above all – on the continuity. Forms of domestic cooking and buying provisions for the household – as embodied skills based on physical work and time available – are interpreted in the light of contemporary food distrust. The similarities between late modern and traditional mechanisms of maintaining trust are analysed, showing how different layers overlap, shaping a mix of traditional and modern forms.

Opis:
Harmony between everyday life and Islam is very important for Muslims. It may seem easy, as the Quran and Hadith permeate all aspects of the lives of their believers. Nevertheless, Muslims do often have doubts in certain areas of life. In an attempt to resolve or reduce these doubts, they often decide to ask for help. The answer can be fatwas—pieces of advice or guidance that help Muslims live closer to God and avoid mistakes. This article analyses the examples of fatwas issued by muftis of Egyptian institution responsible about issuing fatwas—Dar al-iftaʾ al-misriyah concerning areas such as advances in technology and medicine, globalization, and so on. The goal is to determine if shaykhs from Dar al-iftaʾ al-misriyah try to combine in their religious legislation the centuries-old tradition and modernity that contemporary times try to impose on them or if they merely remain strongly rooted in their legacy without accepting the world that moves around them.

Summary It is indicated in the lecture that higher education (universities) is one of the fundamental entities that change the image of cultural and civilizational life. Nowadays, its existence in Poland is based on the European Union projects, including rules of so called the Bologna process. Changes in the image and development of the Polish academicism that have been taking place, became subject of deep criticism made by scientific communities, as well as broad public opinion. In the process of these changes a clash between traditional values and information society creation was revealed. A particularly critical attitude towards the present development of academicism at the University is presented by representatives of humanities and social sciences.

A context of my paper is the debate on reason, tradition and traditional communities, in which this moral and epistemological issues were discussed as a part of general socio-philosophical theory of modernity. In particular I intend to locate my considerations in the context of formal-pragmatic theory of modern communicative rationality developed by Jürgen Habermas and Robert Brandom. I will provide a competitive model of the rationality of tradition by applying a conceptual toolkit of pragmatically oriented analysis to explain practices connected with vocabulary of tradition. I argue that tradition as a communication system has a fully rational structure. My main claim is that communicative structure of tradition has a rational structure of language game. This structure includes defined principles of communication for members of closed tradition-grounded community and rule of inclusion for potential new members. Firstly I consider closely internal principles of communication within the framework of tradition contrasting them shortly with normative-deontic rules of the postenlightenment idea of pragmatic communication discussed by Jürgen Habermas and Robert Brandom. After that I examine the rule of inclusion — the rule, which mediates between closed system of tradition-based community and his environment.

Tematem artykułu jest analiza preferencji i praktyk związanych z jedzeniem w Polsce wraz z próbą określenia ich roli w diagnozowaniu kierunku i charakteru przemian społeczno-kulturowych zachodzących w kraju po zmianie ustrojowej. Podstawą analizy są wyniki ogólnopolskich badań surveyowych na temat wzorów jedzenia przeprowadzonych w 2013 roku, wyniki badań jakościowych z wykorzystaniem techniki wywiadów swobodnych z 2014 roku oraz analiza archiwalnych materiałów z badań stylów życia przeprowadzonych pod koniec lat siedemdziesiątych XX wieku. Szczególne upodobanie do jedzenia domowego, tradycyjnych potraw, spożywanych najczęściej w gronie rodzinnym i wysokie wartościowanie jedzenia własnej produkcji w opozycji do jedzenia dostępnego na rynku wskazują na stosunkowo wysoką zachowawczość i niechęć do zmian. Z analizy wynika, że przemiany społeczne zachodzące w ostatnim ćwierćwieczu w Polsce nie mają charakteru skokowego, są powolną adaptacją do nowych warunków życia oraz że specyficzny kontekst historyczno-kulturowy ma zasadniczy wpływ na kształtowanie kierunku tych zmian sprawiając, że mimo transformacji polityczno-gospodarczej nadal różnimy się znacznie od społeczeństw zachodnich.
The aim of this paper is to analyze food preferences and food practices in Poland, and also to attempt to determine their potential for diagnosing the direction and nature of socio-cultural change in the country after its political and economic transformation. This analysis is based on the findings of a nationwide survey on food patterns conducted in 2013, the findings of qualitative research on food preferences and food practices conducted in 2014, and archival data from qualitative research on lifestyles in Polish towns conducted in the late 1970s. The preference for eating traditional home-cooked meals within the family circle and the high appreciation for self-produced food as opposed to food from the market all indicate a relatively high level of conservatism and reluctance to change among Poles. The analysis shows that the social changes that have occurred in the last quarter of a century in Poland are not that significant compared to the economic and political changes. The specific historical-cultural context has had a major influence on the direction of these changes, making them far different from those observed in Western societies.

Do Marjorie Garber’s premises that Shakespeare makes modern culture and that modern culture makes Shakespeare apply to his reception in Asian contexts? Shakespeare’s Asianization, namely adaptation of certain Shakespeare elements into traditional forms of local cultures, seems to testify to his timelessness in timeliness. However, his statuses in modern Asia are much more complicated. The complexity lies not only in such a cross-cultural phenomenon as the Asianizing practice, but in the Shakespearization of Asia-the idealization of him as a modern cultural icon in a universalizing celebration of his authority in many sectors of modern Asian cultures. Yet, the very entities of Asia, Shakespeare, modernity, and tradition must be problematized before we approach such complexities. I ask questions about Shakespeare’s roles in Asian conceptions of modernity and about the relationship between his literary heritage and Asian traditions. To address these questions, I will discuss this timeliness in Asian cultures with a focus on Shakespeare adaptations in Asian forms, which showcase various indigenous approaches to his text-from the elitist legacy maintaining to the popularist re-imagining. Asian practices of doing Shakespeare have involved other issues. For instance, whether or not the colonial legacies and postcolonial re-inventions in the dissemination of his works in Asian cultures confirm or subvert the various myths about both the Bard and modernity in most time of the 20th century; in what ways Shakespeare has been used as at once a negotiating agent and negotiated subject in the processes of the prince’s translations and adaptations into Asian languages, costumes, landscapes, cultures and traditions.

The author of the article tries to reconstruct both the way of perceiving subjectivity in the works of Walter Benjamin and the ways in which the tension between identity and history is manifested in his writings. The article concentrates on the concept of shock, developed by the philosopher during reading Baudelaire and Kafka. With this concept, it is possible to describe the transition from the narrative conception of experience to “point experience” constituted by series of sudden unconnected impulses. The moment conducing to this transition was the I World War which for Benjamin – as well as for others significant thinkers of that time – constituted an important turning point.

Artykuł jest poświęcony zagadnieniu modernizacji w ujęciu wybranych autorów publikujących w Ośrodku Myśli Politycznej. W swoich rozważaniach zwracają oni uwagę na różne aspekty omawianego pojęcia: wysiłki na rzecz osiągnięcia poziomu cywilizacyjnego charakterystycznego dla krajów zachodnich, przyspieszenie tempa zmian owocujące pojawieniem się nowych zjawisk społecznych,zerwanie z dotychczasowym porządkiem społecznym i dążenie do jego głębokiego przeobrażenia, przenoszenie na polski grunt rozwiązań instytucjonalnych z krajów zachodnich, jak również wielość możliwych wariantów modernizacji. W odniesieniu do polskiej ścieżki modernizacji omawiani autorzy zauważają zwłaszcza jej imitacyjny charakter, przejawiający się w przeszczepianiu na rodzimygrunt wzorców politycznych, gospodarczych i kulturowych zaczerpniętych z krajów zachodnich. W takim ujęciu polska kultura uważana jest za przeszkodę na drodze do nowoczesności. Tego rodzaju tendencje oceniają oni negatywnie. Modernizacja bowiem nie musi zakładać odrzucenia rodzimej tradycji, która może stać się jej integralnym składnikiem.
The paper discusses modernisation as viewed by some authors publishing at the Centre of Political Thought. Their reflections focus on a variety of aspects of this issue: efforts to catch up with Western countries in terms of civilisational growth, acceleration of the changes bringing new social phenomena, breaking with the existing social order and trying to transform it profoundly, applying institutionalsolutions from Western countries in Poland, and a multitude of possible variants of modernisation. As regards the Polish path of modernisation, these authors note, in particular, its imitative character, manifested in the transplantation of political, economic and cultural models drawn from the West. On this account, Polish culture is regarded as an obstacle on the way to modernity. Their assessment of such tendencies is negative since modernisation need not presuppose the rejection of native tradition, as it can become an inseparable component of modernisation.

The article raises the question of functioning of Cyrilo-Methodian tradition in the Bulgarian culture in the conditions of modernity. The subject of analysis is the traditional and originally religious notion of the “Slavic / Bulgarian enlighteners”. It is argued that Cyril and Methodius are presented as patrons of enlightenment, first understood as education, and then as an historical epoch, and that is why they become absolute role models of a citizen, a Bulgarian, an Orthodox, a communist. The conclusion is that the starting point for understanding the modern narrative about the creators of Slavic alphabet should be the idea of enlightenment, which in the course of time has been secularized and concretized.

This paper explores how the language of tradition and modernity has been the dominant idiom that has sought to capture the “essence” of both the Indian nation and the Indian woman. The salience of this discourse demands a critical enquiry to understand how this overarching and hegemonic idiom been accepted as an unproblematic given. India is often seen as a land of contrasts where tradition and modernity coexist-where Indian women are often showcased as emblematic of this coexistence. The paper seeks to look into the complex processes that lie beneath this easy description. It seeks to do so primarily: (i) by presenting a more historicized account of India’s modernity from the vantage point of gender, offering a feminist critique of the public private divide which forms the theoretical hub of the modernization framework, and; (ii) by drawing attention to the centrality of gender in the nation state’s political, developmental and cultural policies and its more recent shifts in a contemporary globalizing India.

Baśnie odgrywają kluczową rolę w życiu dziecka, pobudzają bowiem rozwój emocjonalny, kształtują wrażliwość, wzbogacają słownictwo oraz kreują postawy społeczne. Dzięki baśniom dziecko ma możliwość utożsamiania się ze swoimi ulubionymi bohaterami, przeżywa przygody, oswaja się z trudnymi emocjami oraz poznaje reguły rządzące światem. Ponadto, przekazywane z pokolenia na pokolenie baśnie tworzą nierozerwalne więzi pomiędzy dzieckiem a rodzicem, co wpływa na ich relacje i zapewnia atrakcyjny sposób wspólnego spędzania czasu. Dziecko poprzez słuchanie, czytanie i oglądanie baśni buduje swój światopogląd, kształtuje wartości moralne, zapoznaje się z pozytywnymi wzorcami, przygotowuje się do życia, w którym będzie musiało dokonywać nieustannych wyborów. To właśnie dzięki tej formie literackiej jest bardziej świadome, interpretuje rozmaite doświadczenia bohaterów, pokonuje strach oraz staje się bardziej elastyczne w pokonywaniu napotkanych trudności. Co istotne, żyjąc w czasach tak dynamicznych, w których następuje gwałtowany rozwój technologiczny, człowiek powinien być również przygotowany do odbioru nowoczesnych baśni, które różnią się formą, tematyką, wzorcowym typem osobowości bohatera i niezwykłymi przygodami postaci. Warto dodać, że ekranizacje baśni słyną obecnie z doskonałej muzyki, fenomenalnych efektów specjalnych czy doboru utalentowanej obsady. Dlatego idąc z postępem, człowiek nie powinien zamykać się na nowoczesność. Wręcz przeciwnie, z chęcią powinien uczestniczyć w odbiorze nowoczesnych form baśni, co ułatwi porównywanie formy klasycznej z tą nowoczesną oraz dostarczy wiedzy, czyniąc go osobą obytą, a także pomoże w zachęceniu dziecka do sięgnięcia po książkę. W artykule przybliżono pojęcie baśni i wskazano jej niezbędne elementy oraz podkreślono istotny wpływ tej formy literackiej na rozwój i edukację dziecka. uwagę zwrócono również na specyfikę bajki nowoczesnej, wyszczególniając różnice między jej tradycyjną a współczesną formą.
Fairy tales play a key role in a child’s life because they stimulate emotional development, shape sensitivity, enrich vocabulary, and create social attitudes. Thanks to fairy tales, the child has the opportunity to identify with his favourite heroes, experience adventures, get used to difficult emotions and learn the rules governing the world. In addition, fairy tales have been passed down from generation to generation creating unbreakable bonds between the child and the parent, which affects their relationship and provides an attractive way of spending time together. By listening, reading and watching fairy tales, the child builds his worldview, shapes moral values, learns about positive models and prepares for a life in which he will have to make constant choices. Thanks to fairy tales, a child becomes more aware, interprets the various experiences of the characters, overcomes fear and becomes more flexible in overcoming the encountered difficulties. However, living in such dynamic times, with rapid technological development, a person should be prepared to receive modern fairy tales that differ in form, theme, personality of the protagonist, as well as extraordinary adventures of characters. Also, the adaptations of fairy tales produced in cinemas are famous for their excellent music, phenomenal special effects, and the selection of a talented cast. Therefore, while moving forward, man should not close himself to modernity. On the contrary, he should willingly participate in the reception of modern forms of fairy tales, which will make it easier for him to compare the classical form to modern one and provide knowledge, making it a sophisticated person, and also help encourage the child to reach for the book. In the article, the author describes the concept of a fairy tale and its necessary elements, emphasizes its significant impact on the development and education of a child. She also pays attention to the specificity of a modern fairy tale, detailing the differences between its traditional and contemporary form.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących spojrzenia mieszkańców Mazur na współczesny kształt budownictwa mieszkaniowego jednorodzinnego i przeznaczonego na turystykę w ich regionie. Wnioski z badań posłużyły jako punkt wyjścia do przygotowania propozycji projektowych współczesnych założeń krajobrazowo mieszkalnych z wykorzystaniem domów na wynajem, czy gospodarstw agroturystycznych. Dyplomowe prace inżynierskie studentów architektury są odpowiedzią na preferencje formalne mieszkańców. Zakres czasowy części opartej na badaniu ankietowym dotyczy XXI wieku, a części dotyczącej analiz archetypu sięga wieku XVII.
This paper presents the results of a survey that explored how the residents of Masuria perceived the contemporary form of single-family and tourist housing in their region. The conclusions of this study were used as a starting point for preparing design proposals of contemporary landscape and housing layouts based on homes for rent or agricultural tourism facilities. Bachelor of Engineering in Architecture thesis projects became an answer to the formal preferences of the residents. The temporal scope of the section presenting the survey study concerns the twenty-first century, while the archetype analysis section reaches back to the seventeenth century.

Opis:
Sacred buildings in Poland in the 20th century are characterized by a great variety of forms – although the sacred world is by its nature conservative. Different conditions should be taken into account when designing a church. In the sphere of sacred art and architecture one should rationally draw from the treasury of the new and the old. After World War II over 3,500 new churches were built in Poland, including the church in Nowa Huta in Krakow. This realization is an attempt to reconcile traditional forms with modernity and with the recommendations of the Second Vatican Council.
Budownictwo sakralne w Polsce w XX wieku cechuje duża różnorodność form – choć świat sacrum jest ze swej natury zachowawczy. Projektując kościół należy uwzględniać różne uwarunkowania. W sferze sztuki i architektury sakralnej należy racjonalnie czerpać ze skarbca nowego i starego. Po II wojnie światowej powstało w Polsce ponad 3,5 tys. nowych kościołów – w tej liczbie także kościół w Krakowie Nowej Hucie. Realizacja ta jest próbą godzenia form tradycyjnych z nowoczesnością oraz z zaleceniami II Soboru Watykańskiego.

This article  is an attempt  to  identify  the most  important outcomes of  the Western political  thought of  the 18th century, which sought  to revise  the republican  tradition. It  is admitted  that  this  tradition, having been  influenced by an understanding of  the modern challenges of commerce and statehood, was about to abandon its previous inspirations, namely the ideals of ancient citizenship. The following, most essential aim of the article is to show in this context the possibilities of Polish republicanism, especially the thought of the Reform Camp. With these purposes in mind the paradoxes of modernity and republicanism are presented in the first turn. These can be found – following some conclusions of John G.A. Pocock’s civic humanistic reading – in the writings by Montesquieu, the philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment and, lastly, the American federalists, which actually exemplified a new republican tradition. The conclusions pointed out in the first part of the article, provide us with a comparative framework to examine the Polish struggle with modernity. The last are exemplified here by the thought of Hugo Kołłątaj, the author of the famous Listy anonima, who was indeed one of the most spectacular writers of the Reform Camp. That thought, as it turns out, displays similar concerns of the Western theorists, in its perspectives on political economy and the effectiveness of government. Even if opposed to  the preachers of ancient republicanism of  the Polish szlachta, willingly supporting themselves through the authority of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, it reveals, however, many indications of typical republican rhetoric. Broadly speaking, this analysis will suggest that this thought can be considered to be a sort of Polish answer to the republican dilemmas of modernity.
W artykule podejmuje się próbę rozpoznania najważniejszych  dla  przeobrażeń  tradycji  republikańskiej rozwiązań zachodniej myśli politycznej XVIII wieku. Za sprawą zrozumienia znaczenia handlu  i wyzwań nowoczesnej państwowości miała ona odchodzić od inspirujących ją dotąd ideałów starożytnego obywatelstwa. Kolejnym zasadniczym celem artykułu jest ukazanie na tym tle możliwości polskiego republikanizmu, głównie tak zwanej myśli reformatorskiej. Przedstawia się tu w pierwszej kolejności paradoksy nowoczesności  i republikanizmu. Są one znajdowane – zgodnie zresztą z niektórymi wskazówkami Johna G.A. Pococka – w twórczości Monteskiusza, filozofów szkockiego Oświecenia, wreszcie amerykańskich federalistów, faktycznych wyrazicieli nowego republikanizmu. Wskazane rozstrzygnięcia dostarczają ram porównawczych dla przyjrzenia się polskim zmaganiom z nowoczesnością. Są one przedstawione na przykładzie myśli ks. Hugona Kołłątaja, jednego z najbardziej znaczących pisarzy, autora słynnych w początkach Sejmu Czteroletniego Listów anonima. Okaże się, że myśl ta wykazuje właściwe dla teoretyków zachodnich zainteresowania możliwościami ekonomii i rządności, niemniej ujawnia – pomimo opozycji wobec głosicieli dawnego republikanizmu szlacheckiego, chętnie wspierających się autorytetem Jean-Jacques’a Rousseau – wiele oznak typowej wymowy republikańskiej. Będzie ją można w każdym razie uznać za jedną z prób odpowiedzi polskiego republikanizmu na wyzwania nowoczesności.
