Opis:
This study investigates the possible errors related to Mandarin tone perception and production by German speakers. In a preliminary test, 23 German listeners should identify the tones of 186 monosyllables. Results show that exposure to Man- darin Chinese can help to discriminate lexical tones as highly expected. In the main experiment, 17 German subjects were asked to take part in a perception and pro- duction test. Stimulus of perception involves 48 monosyllables uttered by a standard professional Chinese speaker; acoustic measures were conducted to analyze the pro- duction of 72 monosyllables for each subject. It is found that German speakers have much smaller f0 range than Chinese native speakers. Findings can provide implications for cross language studies and teaching practices.

Opis:
Spell checking and correction is still in its infancy for the Yorùbá language; existing tools cannot be directly applied to address the problem, as Yorùbá uses diacritics extensively for distinguishing phonemes and for marking tone. A model was formulated as a parallel combination of a unigram language model and a diacritic model to form a dictionary sub-model that can be used by error-detection and candidate-generation modules. The candidate-generation module was implemented as a reverse Levensthein edit-distance algorithm. The system was evaluated by using detection accuracy (calculated from the precision and recall) and suggestion accuracy (SA) as metrics. Our experimental setups compared the performance of the component subsystems when used alone and with their combination into a unified model. The detection accuracies for the different models range from 93.23 to 95.01%, and the suggestion accuracies range from 26.94 to 72.10%. The results indicated that each of the sub-models in the dictionary played different roles.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis that positive affective tone of narratives is connected to the experience of posttraumatic growth among transplant patients. Kidney transplant patients (N = 51) and liver transplant patients (N = 48) participated in the study. In the first stage, about 10 weeks after transplant, the participants told two stories about important, freely chosen events from their lives. During the second meeting 10-12 months later we measured posttraumatic growth. Results indicated that the affective tone of narratives about past events was associated with the level of post-traumatic growth measured 10-12 months later. This proves that the affective tone of narratives about life, understood as a relatively constant individual characteristic, promote posttraumatic growth.

Opis:
Studia nad pasją chorałową w Polsce jako pierwszy podjął Włodzimierz Poźniak (1947 r.), a następnie kontynuował ks. Antoni Reginek.
The present paper presents a previously unknown composition from a manuscript kept at the Library of the Metropolitan Seminary in Lublin (shelf mark Rkps 14; siglum PL-Ls 14; old shelf marks 235, B 13, B 17), which appears to be the oldest music work of this kind found in a Polish source (dated to 1411), most likely from the Lesser Poland region, like all the other sources of Polish plainchant Passions known to date. The codex is not a book of sheet music, but a collection of sermons. The St Matthew Passion (fol. 165r–172v) is the only music composition found in this source. According to a 17th-century note found on the first folio of this manuscript (PL-Ls 14, fol. 1r), the book belonged to the Canons Regular of the Lateran in Kraśnik. The Passion melody found in PL-Ls 14 is based on the F tone – applied exclusively in Passions found in Polish sources. The composition abounds in typical formulas, but also in their melodic variants derived from modifications commonly introduced to adapt the model melodies. A large proportion of the modifications clearly result from the varying length of the text with which the typical formula is associated, or from the pattern of accents. However, the use of a given modification in a typical formula is not always determined by the changing number of syllables or by the arrangement of accents. In some cases, melodic modifications are introduced without such a justification, rather as a means of diversifying the musical setting. Comparative studies of the Passion melodies from the Kraśnik codex and from the other sources of Polish provenance prove that the Kraśnik Passion matches very well the previously known plainchant Passion repertoire from this area. Despite the evident similarity of melodic structures in works found in the Polish sources, which are based on the same modal framework (f¹–c²–f²), each of the settings has its own individual qualities as well, resulting from the way this framework was adopted in the given work.

Opis:
In this paper1 I shall discuss the representation of morphological tone in Hausa, as implemented in a computational grammar of the language, referred to as HaG, which has been developed within the framework of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar. Based on an indepth study of segmental and suprasegmental properties manipulated by morphological processes, I shall argue that two fundamental insights from autosegmental phonology need to be seamlessly integrated into typed feature structure grammars of languages with grammatical tone, namely (i) the systematic separation of tonal and metrical information from the string of consonants and vowels, and (ii) the possibility of tonal spreading, i.e. the possibility for a tonal specification to be assigned to an arbitrary number of adjacent tone-bearing units (syllables). To this end, I present a formalisation of tonal melodies in terms of typed list constraints that implement a notion of tonal spreading, allowing for an underspecified description of tonal melodies, independent of the number of tone-bearing units. I shall finally show that this minimal encoding is sufficient, and flexible enough to capture the range of suprasegmental phenomena in Hausa.

There are abundant methods to mitigate PAPR in OFDM signals among which algorithm based tone reservation is of great popularity owing to its low complexity as well as decent BER. Here we have put forward a new distinct algorithm based Tone Reservation technique which is not only less complex and calculates its own threshold as well as PRT signal (unlike other algorithms requiring predetermined threshold and PRT) but also aptly modifies the data by bit by bit comparison with a modified copy of itself (algorithm modified) thus scaling the peaks as and providing a decent BER and good PAPR reduction.

Opis:
The starting point of this article is the work of the Japanese artist Yasunao Tone, entitled MP3 Deviation. Th e work was created in collaboration with a team of researchers focused around the Music Research Centre (Thom Blake, Mark Fell, Tony Myatt, Peter Worth), at the University of York in the UK in 2009. In the case of MP3 Deviation we are therefore faced with an attempt to discover and update what was to remain hidden. The result is the ability to induce 22 kinds of errors as a consequence of applying appropriate changes to the selected parameters. The artist uses the prepared soft ware during concerts, and the results of the experiments have been also released in the form of a vinyl record. Yasunao Tone’s proposals reveal the need for a kind of de-politicization of art. Contemporary sound artists, using high-tech tools in their work, are increasingly dependent on competing manufacturing corporations, and thus on the laws governing the export market. Searching for and highlighting (and even creating) defects can be treated as a political act which expresses itself in opposition to the prevailing economic and political relationships.

Objective: We reviewed functional outcomes of tympanoplasty. Study design: The results of tympanoplastic surgery are changing in time. We present late treatment outcomes among different types of tympanoplasty. Methods: Eighty-six patients who underwent tympanoplasty were enrolled in the study. The results of pure tone audiometry performed 7 days before, then at 3 months, 1 year, and 3 years after the surgery were assessed. Type II tympanoplasty involved implantation of a partial ossicular replacement prosthesis and type III tympanoplasty involved reconstruction with a total ossicular replacement prosthesis and the use of autogenous homogenous material. Statistical analysis was performed. Results: With all four types of tympanoplasty, hearing improvement was achieved at 3 months and 1 year after surgery based on the magnitude of the mean ABG reduction (p<0.001). In patients who underwent type I, type III, and type IV tympanoplasty, the ABG reduction at 3 years after surgery was maintained at the level reported at 3 months and 1 year after surgery (p<0.001). In patients who underwent type II tympanoplasty, however, the mean ABG value was increased at all tested frequencies (p<0.05). The mean ABG values reported 3 years after type II and type III tympanoplasty were similar. Conclusions: Based on the results over time, hearing improvement seems to be less durable after reconstruction with the partial ossicular replacement prosthesis procedure compared to the total ossicular replacement prosthesis procedure.

Research background: This study investigates central banks? (CB) intentions as reflected in their minutes and their relationship with policy decisions. Although CB communication is an inherent part of their inflation targeting (IT) strategy, their communication does not necessarily result in actions.  Purpose of the article: This study aims to extract policy intentions from central bank minutes and juxtapose these with actual policy decisions to investigate the consistency of their words and deeds in a comparative context. Additionally, we compare the applicability of three dictionaries in policy communication assessments. Methods: Computational linguistics and textual methods are applied to create proxies for tone from a large dataset of texts. A transformation of words into time series involves the application of a general economic dictionary and two monetary policy-adjusted dictionaries. We examine the association between tone and actual CB decisions with the eta squared coefficient. The research covers 15 European CBs, divided into three subgroups according to the CB experience in inflation targeting. The sample starting points differ as they relate to each country?s IT implementation year; the analysis ends in mid-2019. Findings & value added: This paper?s value added is firstly methodological, as we test three dictionaries to determine their usefulness. Statistical and qualitative analysis allows us to conclude about superiority of monetary policy specific lexicons for this kind of studies. The extra value added is about the study?s coverage: it covers a large sample and provides a broader illustration compared to most previous examinations. Our results suggest that a relationship exists between communications and actions, although the weakest for late joiners to IT. The latter group of CBs needs to strengthen communication practices. In experienced inflation targeters the short run dimension of credibility exists and opens the room for creating effective monetary policy in terms of managing the expectations of a general audience.

The translator and translation are often referred to by means of metaphors (e.g. translator traitor, cannibal, cook, translation is the author’s import and the reader’s export, translation is a fusion of horizons, etc.), to which i will add another one: translation is an adventure for the translator and the reader, bringing joy, satisfaction, disappointment and suffering. We translate predominantly because of the anthropological, and thus the communicative, aspect of translation. adventure does not only mean a journey, although taking to the road, we very often expect extraordinary experiences. it is distinguished from the road by means of a desire of rational, pragmatic, emotional and physical nature. The paradigm of desire is defined by: individual weaknesses, ambition, desire for communication, knowledge and experience of something so far unknown and the interaction between them in the form of surprise, dazzlement, and even shock. all types of translation include at least one of the elements of the semantic-imagery field of the phenomenon and the word adventure. This results in that the normalization of rules (especially in the case of artistic translation) often meets with difficulties, just as not every participant of creative writing course is turned into a poet, writer or dramatist. There remains the ‘something’, which is called talent and empathy.

A closer investigation of patterns of accentuation in Welsh allows to draw a number of conclusions concerning stress models in the language, namely, that there appear to be two types of metrical foot: metrical foot proper (trochaic), defining the prosodic accent, and melodic (tonic) foot (iambic), responsible for the presence of High Tone in its strong branch. These two models are not in conflict but together contribute to the observed peculiarities of Welsh speech, such as its higher pitch associated with the last syllable of the word, numerous vocalic alternations and apparent irregularities and differences in the degree of prosodic stress.

The article considers comic humour as an emotional and semantic component of the statements in two comedies written by Nadezhda Ptushkina: Paying ahead and Come and take away, which can be attributed to popular mass literature. Distinguishing between the manifestations of situational and semantic comedy and humour the article shows how the humorous tone of the character’s remarks changes the overall genre tone of the comedy. Due to the idea of how much the personality does not fit into the narrow framework of the stereotypical perception of the situation of the husband’s withdrawal from the family, the article notes the dramatic and tragic modality of the statements in the plays. At the same time, in all situations and in all manifestations of the relationship between the characters, we feel the author’s view. The author is distinguished by the ability to understand and accept a different opinion to optimistically see the possibility of preserving the family and identity of each person in the process of collisions with other opinions. Despite the author’s rejection the play retains a belief in a certain general harmony of the human soul, which is especially vividly perceived thanks to allusions to Chekhov’s plays. Techniques contribute to the removal of the author’s view and the positions of the characters: dialogue of the deaf, distancing the author’s view and the character’s position, wordplay. All these techniques contribute to overcoming the farcical nature of the conflict and its dramatization.
