Magnetostratigraphy is an important method in regional and worldwide correlations across the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary. The M-sequence of magnetic anomalies, embracing this boundary, provides an easily recognizable pattern which might be identified in biostratigraphically calibrated land sections. The polarity chrons between M21r and M16n are well correlated to calpionellid and calcareous nannofossil stratigraphy in the Tethyan Realm. This results in a very high precision of stratigraphic schemes of pelagic carbonates (ammonitico rosso and maiolica limestones), integrating the two groups of fossils with magnetostratigraphy. The main clusters of the reference sections are located in the Southern Alps and Apennines, but the database was recently enriched by sections from the Western Carpathians and Eastern Alps. Quite a few Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary sections with magnetostratigraphy are known in the Iberian Peninsula and south-eastern France but their importance relies on the integration of magnetostratigraphy also with the Tethyan ammonite zonation. Correlation of Boreal and Tethyan regions still remains a major problem. Just two sections with reliable correlation to the global polarity time scale are documented outside Tethys: a shallow marine to non-marine Tithonian–Berriasian–Valanginian sequence in southern England (Portland–Purbeck beds) and the marine clastic Upper Tithonian–Middle Berriasian (= Middle Volgian–lowermost Ryazanian) sequence at Nordvik Peninsula (Siberia). The Volgian/Ryazanian boundary at Nordvik seems to be located in the lower part of magnetochron M18n, while the most commonly accepted definitions of the Tethyan Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary are situated either within magnetochron M19n (A/B calpionellid zonal boundary, Durangites/Jacobi ammonite zonal boundary), or at the boundary of M19n/M18r (Jacobi/Grandis ammonite subzonal boundary).

The deposits of the Niżniów Formation, exposed around Niżniów, mainly on the banks of Dnister River, accumulated in the most proximal, marginal position of the latest Jurassic-earliest Cretaceous epicontinental basin on the SW margin of the East European Platform. The Niżniów Formation directly onlaps a Palaeozoic substrate and consists of transgressive cliff-derived conglomerates, and sandstones and marls which pass laterally into shallow marine carbonates: mainly biomicrites, oncomicrites, and pelmicrites with an abundant benthic fauna dominated by nerineid gastropods. The thickness of the formation in the area studied ranges from 0 to more than 20 metres and was controlled bymorphology of the pre-transgression substrate (mainly built of Devonian clastic rocks), synsedimentary fault tectonics and pre-mid-Albian erosion. The age of the Niżniów Formation can be determined, on the evidence of benthic foraminifers encountered in thin sections, as most probably late Tithonian-early Berriasian.

The Sociedade de História Natural in Torres Vedras, Portugal houses an extensive collection of as yet undescribed dinosaur tracks with ornithopod affinities. They have been collected from different Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian–Tithonian) geological formations (Praia de Amoreira-Porto Novo, Alcobaça, Sobral, and Freixial) that outcrop along the Portuguese coast, and belong to two different sub-basins of the Lusitanian Basin (the Consolação and Turcifal sub-basins). Three main morphotypes can be distinguished on the basis of size, mesaxony and the morphology of the metatarsophalangeal pad impression. The minute to small-sized morphotype is similar to the Anomoepus-like tracks identified in other Late Jurassic areas. The small to medium-sized morphotype resembles the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous ichnotaxon Dinehichnus, already known in the Lusitanian Basin. Interestingly, these two morphotypes can be distinguished qualitatively (slightly different size, metatarsophalangeal pad impression and digit morphology) but are nevertheless difficult to discriminate by quantitatively analysing their length-width ratio and mesaxony. The third morphotype is considered a large ornithopod footprint belonging to the ichnofamily Iguanodontipodidae. This ichnofamily is typical for Cretaceous tracksites but the new material suggests that it might also be present in the Late Jurassic. The three morphotypes show a negative correlation between size and mesaxony, so the smaller tracks show the stronger mesaxony, and the larger ones weaker mesaxony. The Upper Jurassic ornithopod record from the Lusitanian Basin has yielded both small and medium-sized ornithopod remains, mainly iguanodontians such as dryosaurids and ankylopollexians, which are the main candidates to be the trackmakers.

Tithonian (= “Middle Volgian”) carbonate rocks are exposed in Owadów-Brzezinki quarry 19 km southeast of Tomaszów Ma-zowiecki, central Poland. In the upper part of the Sławno Limestone Member, chitinoidellids have been identified in thin sections from three samples, only. Therefore, the documented part of the Chitinoidella Zone in Owadów-Brzezinki quarry is about 0.3 m thick. The identified chitinoidellid taxa suggest that this assemblage represents the Upper Tithonian Boneti Subzone. The Chitinoidella Zone occurs at the top of Unit I and correlates with the uppermost interval of the Zarajskensis Horizon (Matyja, Wierzbowski, 2016). Other microfossils identified in the Chitinoidella Zone consist of Saccocoma sp. and benthic foraminifera of the genus Planularia. Calcareous dinoflagellate cysts (Cadosina semiradiata semiradiata Wanner and C. cf. semiradiata semiradiata Wanner) occur above the chitinoidellid assemblage, in the strata corresponding to the Gerassimovi Subzone of the Virgatus Zone (Matyja, Wierzbowski, 2016). Calcareous nannofossils are extremely rare in the thin sections studied; only one small specimen was seen, identified as Rhombolithion minutum (Rood et al., 1971) Young et Bown 2014. In contrast, microbial filaments are frequently observed in the studied thin sections. Their shape and pattern are reminiscent of some recent Cyanobacteria of the order Nostocales, however the Tithonian microbial filaments are much thinner.

The Oxfordian to Tithonian sediments deposited along the southern Tethyan margin exhibit very diverse sedimentary facies. The Jaisalmer Basin, situated along the northwestern margin of the Indian peninsula, is a good example of those preserving these sediments (Baisakhi Formation). The scattered nature of the outcrops, due to peneplanation and desert sand cover, and the diversity in sedimentary facies, have led earlier workers to employ a confusing lithostratigraphy and lithostratigraphic correlations. New records of ammonites, more detailed facies description and the application of the sequence stratigraphic method helped to sort out the stratigraphical problems of these isolated outcrops. The complexity of the Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian-Tithonian sediments present in the Jaisalmer Basin, as evidenced by ammonite finds can be traced along an onshore – offshore transect. Within the Oxfordian-Tithonian strata of the Baisakhi Formation, Jaisalmer Basin, 35 parasequences grouped into three depositional sequences (TST-HST/FSST) have been recognized. In at least two cases, the maximum flooding surfaces (MFS) are superimposed on the transgressive surfaces within very condensed sections. The parasequences belong to a continuous succession representing shoreface (deepest part of the basin) to foreshore (shallowest part of the basin). During deposition of the Tithonian succession the southern part of the basin witnessed shallow, nearshore, or foreshore to fluvial depositional environments and, consequently, contains several depositional gaps and less distinct parasequences. The chronological order of the parasequences has been established on the basis of ammonites: Oxfordian – Perisphinctes (Dichotomosphinctes) sp. and P. (Dichotomoceras) sp.; Kimmeridgian – Torquatisphinctes alterniplicatus (Waagen) and Pachysphinctes aff. major Spath; Tithonian – Aulacosphinctoides sp., Virgatosphinctinae and other zonal ammonites recorded by earlier workers. The most logical facies correlation in conformity with Walther’s law was also used. Unfortunately, no marker beds have been recognized; however, the record of at least two brackish-water phases helped in the understanding of depositional settings along the onshore-offshore transects during these time intervals. In general, the Kimmeridgian-Tithonian part of Baisakhi Formation exhibits a general coarsening-upward trend and a change from lower shoreface zone to fluvial environments. The three sequence cycles interpreted within the Oxfordian-Tithonian sediments in the Jaisalmer Basin correspond to second-order sequence cycles.

Fossil filamentous and non-filamentous bacteria are reported from the Upper Jurassic limestones of the Raptawicka Turnia Limestone Formation in the Mały Giewont sections of the Western Tatra Mountains (Poland). The filamentous bacteria are subdivided into five groups: thin uniseriate, large multi-cell, large spiral, tapering and branched forms. The thin uniseriate filaments are the main microbial component of the peloids and micro-oncoids from the studied formation, mainly in the Upper Kimmeridgian-Tithonian limestones. The presence of the heterocyte-like terminal cells suggests their interpretation as cyanobacteria similar to the modern order Nostocales and perhaps to the family Nostocaceae. The large multi-cell and tapering filaments are uncommon in the studied limestones. The branched filaments found in the Tithonian limestones, although thinner, probably also may be compared with some modern representatives of the order Nostocales. Non-filamentous fossil bacteria found in the studied limestones consist of rod-shaped bacilli, monotrichous bacilli and spirilla; they belong mainly to the phylum Proteobacteria. Some microborings observed in the microfossils occurring in the micro-oncoids remind the ichnotaxon Scolecia filosa Radtke known to be of wide palaeobathymetric range. The thinnest microborings resemble another group of ichnofossils named “Pygmy form”, probably also of bacterial origin. The Upper Kimmeridgian-Tithonian micro-oncoids were formed mainly by filamentous bacteria (Cyanobacteria) that overgrew successively their nuclei with a few to several laminae. Frequent occurrence of pelagic microfossils as nuclei of micro-oncoids does not match a transport of these coated grains from much shallower sedimentary environments. The fossil filamentous bacteria filling up the peloids and micro-oncoids could be adapted to conditions that existed in the sublittoral zone below the wave base.

The studied corals have been collected from cores of boreholes located in the central part of the Polish Carpathian Foreland in the Dąbrowa Tarnowska–Szczucin area. The Jurassic complex in this area presents a continuous stratigraphic section from the Upper Callovian to Tithonian, locally passing to the Lower Cretaceous (Berriasian). Its thickness exceeds 1,100 m in this area. This complex is composed of marine, mainly shallow-water deposits. The corals occur within the upper part of the Upper Jurassic (Tithonian) deposits, almost entirely within the Swarzów Limestone Formation (= coral-algal limestone formation). This occurrence marks the northernmost extent of Tithonian shallow-water corals in Poland and one of the northernmost in Europe. 42 coral species (among them 14 in open nomenclature) were identified in deposits of this formation. They include two new species: Complexastrea magna and Complexastrea dabroviensis. All taxa, except one, belong to the order Scleractinia. The described assemblage displays a Late Jurassic character. The broader stratigraphic span is assigned to some species, which are quoted from the Middle Jurassic and some species lasted until the Early Cretaceous, Berriasian and/or Valanginian.

This is an account of finds of stratigraphically useful calcareous nannofossils and the magnetostratigraphy of the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary interval of the eastern Crimean peninsula (southern Ukraine). We compare these new complementary results with those presented by our team in earlier publications. A missing interval in the Crimean sequence is filled, and the position of the Tithonian-Berriasian (J/K) boundary is confirmed.

Recent discoveries of ammonites in the Štramberk Limestone in the type area of their occurrence near the town of Štramberk supplement existing data on the Tithonian age of the limestones. Franconites cf. fascipartitus occurs in the lower part of the Lower Tithonian (Neochetoceras mucronatum Zone). Lemencia ciliata has a zonal character in the upper part of the Lower Tithonian. Richterella richteri is a subzonal species of the upper part of the Lower Tithonian in the Mediterranean and Submediterranean areas (Semiformiceras fallauxi Zone). All of the new discoveries are referable to the faunal associations of the Submediterranean bioprovince, and are in agreement with existing knowledge of it. Sexual dimorphism was seen in the genus Richterella, with the recognition of both macroconchs and microconchs in the type species of Richterella, i.e. R. richteri. The stratigraphic position of these recent ammonite discoveries in the Štramberk Limestone at the Kotouč Quarry does not support the stratigraphy of the limestones based on the distribution of calpionellids, as previously assumed by other authors. The recent collection of ammonites confirms that the Štramberk Limestone belongs to the lower Tithonian and lower Berriasian and also represents the lower Tithonian as a shallow-water facies.

The radiolarian and calpionellid microfacies are characteristic for the latest Tithonian–Early Berriasian limestones of the Guasasa Formation in the Sierra del Infierno, western Cuba. The limestones of the uppermost part of the El Americano Memberbelongto the Late Tithonian Crassicollaria intermedia Subzone, Crassicollaria Standard Zone, and to the basal part of the Early Berriasian Calpionella alpina Subzone. The lower part of the Tumbadero Member is assigned to the C. alpina Subzone of the Calpionella Standard Zone. A heteromorph ammonite assemblage (Protancyloceras-Vinalesites) crosses the Crassicollaria/Calpionella Zones boundary. The studied limestones belong to three nannoconid assemblages of latest Tithonian–Early Berriasian age assigned to Nannoconus wintereri Subzone, N. steinmannii minor Subzone and N. steinmannii steinmannii Zone. Radiolarian taxa identified in thin sections are consistent with the lower part of D2 radiolarian zone from Western Tethys. The investigated deposits have been probably accumulated in the dysaerobic zone. At the Tithonian–Berriasian (J/K) boundary, dysaerobic to anaerobic conditions could be widespread in the deeper waters of the northwestern Proto-Caribbean basin.
W niniejszej pracy zostały zbadane dwa profile obejmujące wapienie najwyższego tytonu i dolnego beriasu w Sierra del Infierno, na zachód od Vifiales w zachodniej części Kuby (Fig. 1A-C). Wapienie najwyższej części ogniwa El Americano formacji Guasasa (Tab. 1) należą do podpoziomu Crassicollaria intermedia poziomu standardowego Crassicollaria (górny tyton) i najniższej części podpoziomu Calpionella alpina (dolny berias) poziomu standardowego Calpionella (Fig. 2, 3). Dolna część ogniwa Tumbadero została zaliczona do podpoziomu C. alpina. W wapieniach najwyższej części ogniwa El Americano (Fig. 4A) i dolnej części ogniwa Tumbadero (Fig. 4B) charakterystyczne są mikrofacje kalpionellidowa (Fig. 5A) i radiolariowa (Fig. 6A). Pelmikrosparyty (Fig. 5B) i laminowane biomikryty (Fig. 6B) również są spotykane w dolnym beriasie. Kalpionellidy (Fig. 7A-I) są reprezentowane przez pojedyncze okazy do bardzo licznych zespołów (Tab. 2); zwykle są one słabo zachowane. Jest to już wcześniej opisana cecha kalpionellidów obecnych w wapieniach późnego tytonu i beriasu sukcesji Sierra de los Organos (Pop, 1976). Badane wapienie zawierają również nannokonidy (Fig. 8, 9A-H) zaliczone tutaj do podpoziomów Nannoconus wintereri i N. steinmannii minor oraz do poziomu N. steinmannii steinmannii (Tab. 3). Granica ogniw El Americano i Tumbadero znajduje się w obrębie podpoziomu N. steinmannii minor. Radiolarie oznaczone w płytkach cienkich (Fig. 10A-J, 11) odpowiadają dolnej części poziomu radio-lariowego D2 ustalonego w formacji Maiolica zachodniej Tetydy (Jud, 1994). Niektóre rodzaje (Ristola, Mirifusus) są często spotykane w badanych profilach. Obecność juwenilnych amonitów rozwiniętych: Protancyloceras gr. hondense (Imlay) (Fig. 12A), Protancyloceras sp. i Vinalesites sp. (Fig. 12B) została stwierdzona w niektórych płytkach cienkich wykonanych z wapieni (Tab. 4). Zespół tych amonitów przekracza granicę poziomów kalpionellidowych Crassicollaria i Calpionella (Tab. 5). Szare, ciemnoszare i czarne wapienie najwyższej części ogniwa El Americano i dolnej części ogniwa Tumbadero zostały osadzone prawdopodobnie w strefie dysaerobowej, w której fauna bentosowa była bardzo nieliczna (Fig. 12C). Ławice wapieni zazwyczaj nie zawierają struktur wskazujących na intensywną działalność organizmów ryjących w osadzie. W pobliżu granicy tytonu i beriasu (J/K), warunki dysaerobowe (lub nawet anaerobowe) mogły być rozprzestrzenione w głębszych wodach północno-zachodniej części basenu Protokaraibskiego. Takie warunki wskazująna raczej słabą cyrkulację w głębszych wodach tego dosyć wąskiego w tym czasie basenu.

The International Berriasian Working Group (ISCS) suggested primary and secondary marker “datums” to fix the basal Berriasian boundary and thus to detine the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary (Wimbledon et al., 2011, 2013). Two primary markers Calpionella, as well as calcareous nannoplankton, are practically unknown in the Boreal Realm. Testing and calibration of these markers, as well as of fossils of radiolarians and other signals, in the most complete sections, were declared as an important task for the near future. In the Tethys, the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary based on radiolarians falls inside zone UAZ 13 of Baumgartner et al. (1995), whereas in the palaeo-Pacific it corresponds to the boundary between zones 4 and 5 of Pessagno et al. (2009), and in boreal Siberia it probably falls between the biohorizons of Parvicingula haeckeli and P. khabakovi. The radiolarian events at the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary in the boreal successions of Russia can be proposed to be used as an additional biomarker to help develop new integrated boundary criteria. Thus, as the first appearance of the zonal species Calpionella alpina, which defines the Jurassic and Cretaceous boundary, coincides with the first occurrence of the calcareous dinocyst zonal species Stomiosphaerina proxima (Reháková, 2000), it is logical to propose a calcareous dinoflagellate, widely represented in the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Bazhenovo Formation of Siberia, as a secondary marker.

The Hith Formation forms the youngest lithostratigraphic unit of the Jurassic Shaqra Group. It represents the culmination of a succession of hypersaline and euryhaline cycles that characterise the Late Jurassic of Saudi Arabia. The Formation is poorly exposed in central Saudi Arabia, but it has been studied in detail in subsurface eastern Saudi Arabia where the upper carbonate member hosts an important hydrocarbon reservoir called the Manifa Reservoir. Chronostratigraphic control is absent from the formation itself, and the Tithonian age is suggested for the Hith Formation based on its stratigraphic position between the underlying Arab Formation of Late Kimmeridgian age, and the overlying Sulaiy Formation, of Late Tithonian to Berriasian age. The Hith Formation needs redefining in the light of new lithological evidence, and a tripartite member scheme is suggested. This includes the lower anhydrite-dominated member here termed the “anhydrite” member, and considered to represent hypersaline subaqueous deposition within a restricted deep lagoon during the lowstand systems tract of the Manifa sequence. A “transitional“ member consists of interbedded anhydrites and carbonates and approximates with the transgressive zone. The overlying “carbonate” member represents the results of a prograding shallow, normal salinity marine succession related to the highstand systems tract. Interbedded carbonates within the evaporites are interpreted to represent superimposition of a higher frequency, possibly 4th order eustatic cyclicity. The “carbonate“ member hosts the Manifa Reservoir, and here proposed as the Manifa Member, consist of five parasequences, each of which represents a shoaling-upwards cycle with a succession of up to five repeated lithofacies and biofacies that commences with a stromatolitic, microfaunally-barren unit followed by fine-grained grainstones with a monospecific but abundant ostracod biofacies. A succession of coarse pelloidal grainstones with rare foraminifera, including Redmondoides lugeoni, Trocholina alpina with a variety of unidifferentiated valvulinids and miliolids then follows, that passes vertically into coarse ooid grainstones, with rare Redmondoides lugeoni, forming the uppermost part of each parasequence.

Górnojurajskie utwory formacji wapieni koralowcowo-glonowych ze Swarzowa, występujące w środkowej części przedgórza Karpat, w rejonie Dąbrowy Tarnowskiej–Szczucina, zawierają liczne makroskamieniałości (m.in. skleraktinie, mszywioły, ramienionogi, algi) oraz niezbyt liczne mikroskamieniałości. Niektóre mikroskamieniałości są interesującymi wskaźnikami biostratygraficznymi. Występujące sporadycznie w wyższej części tej formacji kalpionellidy (Calpionella alpina, C. aff. alpina, Crassicolaria cf. brevis, Tintinopsella cf. carpatica) wskazują na późnotytoński wiek tych osadów (zona Crassicollaria). Być może, do tytonu należy prawie cała formacja ze Swarzowa i najniższa część leżącej wyżej formacji wapienno-dolomitycznej, muszlowcowej ze Smęgorzowa. Wyższa część formacji ze Smęgorzowa może należeć już do kredy dolnej, do beriasu.
The Upper Jurassic coral-algal Swarzów Formation in the Dąbrowa Tarnowska–Szczucin area, occuring in the middle part of the Carpathian Foreland Poland contains rich macrofossils (i.e. scleractinian corals, bryozoans, brachiopods, algae) and generally sparse assemblages of microfossils. Some of the latter are interesting as a biostratigraphical tool. Thus, the presence of rare calpionellids (Calpionella alpina, C. aff. alpina, Crassicolaria cf. brevis, Tintinopsella cf. carpatica) argues for Late Tithonian age (standard Crassicollaria zone) of the upper part of this formation. It is suggested that the Swarzów Limestone Formation almost entirely represents the Tithonian, which probably reaches the lowest part of the lithostratigraphic unit of the Smęgorzów Limestone-Dolomitic Coquina Formation. The upper part of this unit may belong to the Lower Cretaceous, to Berriasian.

Numerous fully cored boreholes completed in the last years in central Poland (Kleszczów Graben area, southern border of the Łódź Depression) enabled the researchers to obtain new sedimentological data on the Oxfordian-Tithonian continuous sedimentary record in the Polish part of the northern Tethys shelf. Twenty-two facies were distinguished in the sedimentological succession. The facies represent the outer-, mid- and inner-ramp environments, including evaporitic episodes and palaeosols. The facies document that the Oxfordian-Lower Kimmeridgian (up to Hypselocyclum) carbonate ramp has evolved to the Upper Kimmeridgian-Tithonian carbonate-siliciclastic ramp. Among the Kimmeridgian deposits, numerous hardgrounds, tidal channel deposits and gravity flow sediments were identified. The Kleszczów Graben sedimentary succession is discussed along with the lithostratigraphical units known from the adjacent regions of southern and central Poland.

Loose elements of the roveacrinid Saccocoma from the Tithonian red Rogoża Coquina, Rogoźnik, Pieniny Klippen Belt, Poland, are used to test the contradictory opinions on the mode of life of Saccocoma. The investigated elements belong to three morphological groups, which represent at least two separate species: S. tenella, S. vernioryi, and a third form, whose brachials resemble those of S. vernioryi but are equipped with wings of different shape. The geometry of brachials’ articular surfaces reveals that the arms of Saccocoma were relatively inflexible in their proximal part and left the cup at an angle of no more than 45, then spread gradually to the sides. There is no evidence that the wings were permanently oriented in either horizontal or vertical position, as proposed by two different benthic life−style hypotheses. The first secundibrachial was probably more similar to the first primibrachial than to the third secundibrachial, in contrast to the traditional assumption. The winged parts of the arms were too close to the cup and presumably too stiff to propel the animal in the water efficiently. Swimming was probably achieved by movements of the distal, finely branched parts of the arms. The nonhorizontal attitude of the winged parts of the arms is also not entirely consistent with the assumption that they functioned as a parachute. Moreover, the wings added some weight and thus increased the energy costs associated with swimming. The hydrodynamic benefits balancing these extra costs are not entirely clear, but it seems probable that the wings reduced the sinking rate of the animal not by increasing the pressure drag, as suggested by the parachute−analogy, but by increasing the surface drag (friction drag), which also harmonize with the presence of spines, reticulate sculpture and conspicuous vacuolar ornamentation in some species of Saccocoma.

The Tithonian ammonite succession at the Owadów–Brzezinki quarry, central Poland shows the presence of Subboreal ammonites of both NE European (“Volgian”) and NW European (“Bolonian–Portlandian”) affinity, making possible the correlation between the relevant ammonite subdivisions. The former are represented by Zaraiskites – Z. regularis Kutek and Z. zarajskensis (Michalski) as well as an early form of Virgatites – V. gerassimovi Mitta which enable the recognition of the upper part of the Scythicus Zone (the Zaraj¬skensis Subzone) and the lower part of the Virgatus Zone (the Gerassimovi Subzone) of the “Middle Volgian”. The latter are represented by Virgatopavlovia, which enables the correlation with the Fittoni Zone of the uppermost “Bolonian”, and by still younger assemblage of small-sized virgatitids – such as V. pusillus (Michalski), showing similarity to Progalbanites albani (Arkell) of the Albani Zone of the lowermost “Portlandian”. The new species established include: Zaraiskites lewinskii sp. nov. which represents a new member of the virgatitid lineage linking an older Z. pommerania (Arkell) with younger small-sized Virgatites, as well as two species of the genus Virgatopavlovia – V. janeki sp. nov. and V. dembowskae sp. nov. The appearance of ammonites of NW and NE European affinity in central Poland resulted from the opening of the new sea routes possibly related with tectonic activity in northern European areas at the transition from Early to Late Tithonian.

The giant, up to 40 cm high littorinoid gastropods from the Middle Tithonian to Berriasian carbonates of the Alpine-Carpathian northern Tethys margin are assigned to the genus Leviathania. The genus is distributed from Spain to the Caucasus. Some species formed dense populations in the wide-spread, highly productive lagoonal environments situated on the carbonate platforms of Ernstbrunn (Austria), Mikulov, Štramberk (both Czech Republic), and Nyzhniv (Ukraine). The conspicuous morphology, comprising very large shells with strongly angulated whorls and especially the phaneromphalous umbilicus exclude the traditional attributions of this genus to the families Purpurinidae and Purpuroideidae. Therefore, we establish the new family Leviathaniidae for the type genus Leviathania. The family comprises the largest pre-Cenozoic gastropods, represented by a yet unnamed gigantic Leviathania species from the latest Tithonian or early Berriasian of Ukraine. The gastropods are tentatively assumed to have fed omnivorous, i.e., on a mixed detrital-algal diet, based on comparable population densities as the large modern queen conch Lobatusgigas from the Caribbean Sea.

11 specimens of large sized ammonites from the Štramberk Limestone deposited in the collections in Prague represent 6species. Two species belong to the superfamily Lytoceratoidea, the remaining ones to the superfamily Perisphinctoidea. The perisphinctid specimens belong to the Lower and the Upper Tithonian, and the lytoceratids probably correspond to the same stratigraphic level. Two species, namely Ernstbrunnia blaschkei and Djurjuriceras mediterraneum were not known from the Štramberk Limestone earlier.

A calpionellid zonal scheme is proposed for the Tithonian through Valanginian pelagic carbonates of the Western Balkan Unit, based on the vertical ranges of 57 chitinoidellid and calpionellid species recognized. This zonal scheme consists of calpionellid zones that are widely accepted in the Mediterranean Realm, such as the zones of Chitinoidella, Praetintinnopsella, Crassicollaria, Calpionella, Calpionellopsis, Calpionellites and Tintinnopsella. Subzonal divisions are comparable to those in the Carpathians. Direct correlations between ammonite and calpionellid ranges suggest that the base of the Upper Tithonian corresponds to the FO of Chitinoidella boneti; that of the Upper Berriasian to the FO of the genus Calpionellopsis; and the base and top of the Lower Valanginian to the FO and LO of the genus Calpionellites respectively. Correlations of the calpionellid zonation in the study area with zonations in other areas are discussed.

Detailed magnetostratigraphic investigations of the Tithonian–Berriasian strata, integrated with litho- and biostratigraphic observations were carried out within the Bobrowiec Unit of the Lower Sub-Tatric (Krina) Nappe in theWestern Tatra Mts. Amodification of the existing lithostratigraphic scheme is proposed, splitting the Pieniny Limestone Formation (sensu Lefeld et al. 1985) into two formations, accordingly with lithostratigraphic subdivisions of the coeval deposits in some other parts of the Krina Nappe in Slovakia: the Jasenina Formation (includes Pośrednie Member sensu Pszczółkowski 1996, in its uppermost part) and the Osnica Formation (Osnica Member sensu Pszczółkowski 1996). The Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary, as defined by calpionellids, falls within the lowermost part of the Osnica Fm. Magnetozones from CM20r (Lower/Upper Tithonian boundary) up to CM16n (Upper Berriasian) were identified. Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary is situated within the CM19n magnetozone, below the short reversed Brodno subzone. Magnetostratigraphic correlation of four sections revealed existence of some “gaps” which are interpreted as tectonic reductions, which have to be considered while calculating the sedimentation rate which, however, might be roughly estimated. Sedimentation was relatively slow within the Jasenina Formation (5–7 m/My), but accelerated within the Osnica Fm (mean value: 10–15 m/My) and in the investigated lower part of the Kościeliska Marl Fm (20–30 m/My). Presence of hematite correlates with low sedimentation rate.

The finding of two new specimens and a reappraisal of the single original specimen of the problematic giant Canadian Late Ju- rassic ammonite Titanites occidentalis Frebold results in the creation of Corbinites, n. gen. It is assigned to the ataxioceratid subfamily Lithacoceratinae largely because of the presence of variocostate and previously unrecognized ataxioceratoid ribbing in middle and late growth stages. With enigmatic ancestry and geographically removed other forms with similar characteristics, the species may have been endemic in the relatively isolated early Alberta foreland basin of western interior Canada.

The aim of this paper is to document the ammonite fauna of the upper part of the Late Tithonian collected at the key section of Le Chouet (Drôme, SE France). Emphasis is laid on new and poorly known Ataxioceratidae, Himalayitidae and Neocomitidae from the upper part of the Tithonian. Among the Ataxioceratidae, a new account on the taxonomy and relationship between Paraulacosphinctes Schindewolf and Moravisphinctes Tavera is presented. Regarding the Himalayitidae, the range and content of Micracanthoceras Spath is discussed and two new genera are introduced: Ardesciella gen. nov., for a group of Mediterranean ammonites that is homoeomorphic with the Andean genus Corongoceras Spath, and Pratumidiscus gen. nov. for a specimen that shows morphological similarities with the Boreal genera Riasanites Spath and Riasanella Mitta. Finally, the occurrence of Neocomitidae in the uppermost Tithonian is documented by the presence of the reputedly Berriasian genera Busnardoiceras Tavera and Pseudargentiniceras Spath.

Opis:
The Late Jurassic aspidoceratoid genus Pseudhimalayites Spath is scarcely recorded but widely distributed in the Andean basins, the Caribbean region, and in the European Tethys. From Ponti Zone (Lower Tithonian) rocks of the Betic Range in Carchelejo we describe here the new species Pseudhimalayites carchelejensis, based on a macroconch (female) holotype. The corresponding microconch (male), described from the same ammonite assemblage, would belong to the morphogenus Simocosmoceras Spath which groups the microconchs of Pseudhimalayites. P. carchelejensis n. sp. differs from the coeval Pseudhimalayites steinmanni (Haupt) by lacking ventral tubercles in the phragmocone and by bearing umbilical tubercles only from the adult whorl of the phragmocone. These differences illustrate a significant morphologic divergence between the Andean and the Tethyan lineages.

Status and correlation of Andean ammonite biozones are reviewed. Available calpionellid, nannofossil, and radiolarian data, as well as radioisotopic ages, are also considered, especially when directly related to ammonite zones. There is no attempt to deal with the definition of the Jurassic–Cretaceous limit. Correlation of the V. mendozanum Zone with the Semiforme Zone is ratified, but it is open to question if its lower part should be correlated with the upper part of the Darwini Zone. The Pseudolissoceras zitteli Zone is characterized by an assemblage also recorded from Mexico, Cuba and the Betic Ranges of Spain, indicative of the Semiforme–Fallauxi standard zones. The Aulacosphinctes proximus Zone, which is correlated with the Ponti Standard Zone, appears to be closely related to the overlying Windhauseniceras internispinosum Zone, although its biostratigraphic status needs to be reconsidered. On the basis of ammonites, radiolarians and calpionellids the Windhauseniceras internispinosum Assemblage Zone is approximately equivalent to the Suarites bituberculatum Zone of Mexico, the Paralytohoplites caribbeanus Zone of Cuba and the Simplisphinctes/Microcanthum Zone of the Standard Zonation. The C. alternans Zone could be correlated with the uppermost Microcanthum and “Durangites” zones, although in west central Argentina it could be mostly restricted to levels equivalent to the “Durangites Zone”. The Substeueroceras koeneni Zone ranges into the Occitanica Zone, Subalpina and Privasensis subzones, the A. noduliferum Zone could be equivalent to the Dalmasi Subzone, Occitanica Zone, to lower part of the Boissieri Zone, and the S. damesi Zone could range through the upper part of the Boissieri Zone to the lower part of the Pertransiens Zone. Division of the Substeueroceras koeneni Zone and a precise correlation between the Andean ammonite zones and the international standard require new systematic and stratigraphic studies.

For over ten years, the Lower to Upper Tithonian boundary beds cropping out in the Owadów–Brzezinki quarry have yielded numerous fossils of ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, xiphosurans, decapods, insects, and vertebrates – including actinopterygian fishes and various reptiles and others, all of which exhibit fine preservation of their anatomical details due to special environmental conditions during their fossilization. The Owadów–Brzezinki section is also important for stratigraphical correlations because it contains ammonite faunas indicative of the NE European and NW European Subboreal zonal schemes, as well as Tethyan calpionellids. The whole faunal as- semblage, which represents taxa of many iconic groups of Mesozoic animals, has created the opportunity to establish the ‘Owadów– Brzezinki geopark’, a geoeducation area where the public, and especially the young, can learn about the beauty of the natural history of the region.

Here we briefly report the discovery of new, exceptionally well-preserved Late Jurassic (Tithonian) fossils from Owadow- Brzezinki quarry - one of the most important palaeontological sites in Poland. These finds which comprise organisms living originally in different environments indicate that the Owadow-Brzezinki site represents a link - most probably in a form of open marine passages - betweeen distinct palaeobiogeographical provinces. This creates an unprecedented opportunity for better recognition of the regional palaeobiogeography of adjacent European areas during the Late Jurassic.

In the Cerro Mallín Quemado area (Sierra de la Vaca Muerta) the three members of the Vaca Muerta Formation (Portada Covunco, Los Catutos and Pichi Moncol) can be recognized, including the whole of the Tithonian rock-record. The ammonite fauna does not show significant differences with respect to that of the nearby locality Pampa Tril, but the record of faunal horizons is patchier. Eighteen species of ammonites were recorded through the studied sections, covering the whole of the Andean Tithonian. The current chronostratigraphic zonation of the Andean Tithonian is briefly discussed, updated and correlated with the most recent literature. From the current succession of ammonite bio-horizons previously defined in the basin, only three (picunleufuense alpha, picunleufuense beta and falculatum) were recognized definitely. Four other bio-horizons (perlaevis, erinoides, internispinosum alpha and vetustum) were recognized only tentatively, because the typical assemblages of morphotypes (morpho-species) were not clearly or completely recognized. The current regional time-correlation chart dated by the ammonite bio-horizons of the Neuquén Basin along a 70°W transect is updated with the results of the present study and additional information recently obtained from other localities

The ammonite fauna of the Tithonian–Berriasian of the Vaca Muerta Formation in Pampa Tril has been recently described in detail. New important specimens and additional information are presented in this paper. The phyletic evolution of Choicensisphinctes, passing from C. platyconus to C. erinoides is confirmed, as well as the sexual dimorphic correspondence of this latter with C. mendozanus. A microconch of the genus Krantziceras is described for the first time. New specimens of Substeueroceras koeneni identical to the paralec¬totype, along with material already described from the koeneni Hz. (Koeneni Zone), point to the fixation of this horizon as the type horizon of the species. New specimens of Subthurmannia boissieri from the Damesi Zone match clearly the range of variation of this species in Spain, thus providing an element for time-correlation with the Tethyan standard scale. Additional material from the internispinosum alpha Hz. confirms the origin of W. internispinosum from C. proximus by the inception of an evolutionary innovation in the juvenile ontogeny.

The ammonite biostratigraphy as well as the organic matter content, its type and maturity of the Pałuki Formation, belonging to the fine, siliciclastic Kimmeridge Clay type facies, were investigated in five deep boreholes from the central-eastern part of the Łódź Synclinorium in Central Poland. The studied deposits are assigned to the Eudoxus and Autissiodorensis zones of the Upper Kimmeridgian as well as the Klimovi, Sokolovi, Pseudoscythica and Puschi (=Tenuicostata) zones of the Lower Tithonian (“Lower Volgian”). The Pałuki Formation shows in its lower and middle parts average TOC concentrations of ca. 2.5 wt.% and prominent, restricted increases in organic matter content, which are found in the mid-Eudoxus Zone, the lowermost part of the Autisiodorensis Zone, and at the Sokolovi–Pseudoscythica zone boundary. These stratigraphical intervals correlate well with rich in organic matter levels present in the Kimmeridge Clay Formation of NW Europe. The periodic expansions of Submediterranean and Subboreal-Boreal ammonites corresponded mostly to the transgressive phases, often correlated with a higher content of organic matter. The development of special morphologies of ammonites, such as the small-sized, nectopelagic forms of Nannocardioceras in the Late Kimmeridgian, has also been related to the deposition of shales rich in organic matter during the transgression maxima. The organic matter present in the Pałuki Formation mostly consists of Type II kerogen and is immature or early mature with respect to hydrocarbon generation, which is in agreement with previously published data. Evaluation of the new and published geochemical, lithological and structural data from the Pałuki Formation in the central-eastern part of the Łódź Synclinorium shows that these deposits could not have been a considerable source of crude oil or gas.

The study of the Tithonian and lower Berriasian succession of Le Saix (Hautes-Alpes, France) has made it possible to better characterize the lithological succession at a former Berriasian GSSP candidate, its set of microfacies, the stratigraphic ranges of the main groups of marine plankton and therefore the calpionellid and saccocomid biozonations. On the lithological level, the Tithonian strata are characterized by thick-bedded breccias representing debris flows and related calciturbidites, whereas the Berriasian strata are typically white limestones. The lower part of the Berriasian is comprised of scattered intercalations of thin-bedded breccias and calciturbitides (including cryptic mud calciturbidites). In thin sections, the white limestones display mud- to wackestone textures and their allochems are mostly tiny bioclasts (e.g., radiolarians, calpionellids, saccocomids). Calciturbidites have wacke- to grainstone textures and their allochems are mostly pseudointraclasts and extraclasts, comprising various bioclasts and some ooids. Mud turbidites are made of micrograin-stones some yielding almost exclusively well-sorted calpionellids, which were previously erroneously interpreted as the signature of “explosions” or “blooms” of Calpionella alpina. Breccias are mostly lithoclastic floatstones with a matrix similar to that of the calciturbid- ites. Their lithoclasts are either extraclasts sensu stricto, i.e., material derived from updip shallow-water areas, or pseudointraclasts representing reworked subautochthonous material, i.e., mud- and wackestone lithoclasts with radiolarians, saccocomids and/or calpionellids. Radiolarians are common over the whole studied interval. Saccocomids are part of the dominating biota reported from the lower and lower upper Tithonian interval whereas calpionellids replace them in the uppermost Tithonian to lower Berriasian interval. Minor plank- tonic groups comprise calcareous dinoflagellates and Globochaete alpina; Iranopsis nov. group is also present. Intervals with saccocomid sections characteristic of zones 4-5 and zone 6 are respectively ascribed here to the lower Tithonian (4-5) and the lower upper Tithonian (6). The biozonation of the calpionellid group sensu lato allows identification of i) the Boneti Subzone of the chitinoidellids, ii) the Cras- sicollaria Zone, more specifically its Tintinnopsella-Intermedia (A1), Intermedia-Alpina (A2) and Brevis-Massutiniana (A3) subzones, and iii) the Alpina Zone, with its Alpina-Parvula (B1) and its Alpina-Remaniella (B2) subzones. On the basis of biostratigraphical and sedimentological data, most zonal boundaries prove to be hiatal, located at the erosional base of breccia or turbidite layers whereas the Tithonian/Berriasian stage boundary appears to be located at a strike-slip fault plane in the Tré Maroua section.

The Rogoża Coquina Member (Pieniny Klippen Belt, Carpathians, Poland) develped as red micritic ammonite coquinas covers the stratigraphical interval from Kimmeridgian to Upper Tithonian as indicated by microfossils study (calcareous dinocysts and calpionellids) in the type-section of the unit, in the Rogoźnik Quarry. These deposits are overlain by white micritic limestones attributed to the Sobótka Limestone Member of Lower to Middle Berriasian.
Czerwone muszlowce amonitowe odsłonięte w nieczynnym kamieniołomie w Rogoźniku stanowią wzorzec litostratygraficzny dla ogniwa muszlowców z Rogoży (dawniejsza nazwa "czerwone muszlowce rogoźnickie" - Birkenmajer 1962, 1963, 1977). Pozycja chronostratygraficzna tych utworów i ich związek ze słynnymi muszlowcami ogniwa muszlowców z Rogoźnika (dawna nazwa "białe muszlowce rogoźnickie" - Birkenmajer 1962, 1963, 1977) pozostawały przez dłuższy czas nie w pełni wyjaśnione. Pierwotnie (Birkenmajer 1977), sądzono, że ogniwo muszlowców z Rogoży jest starsze od ogniwa muszlowców z Rogoźnika; później (Kutek & Wierzbowski 1986), wyrażono opinię, że ogniwa te są równowiekowe - czerwone mikrytowe muszlowce z Rogoży zastąpione są obocznie przez muszlowce z Rogoźnika o silnie zrekrystalizowanym matryksie przekształconym w dużym stopniu w grubokrystaliczny kalcyt. Przeprowadzone obecnie szczegółowe badania płytek cienkich z prób zebranych w profilu muszlowców z Rogoży w kamieniołomie w Rogoźniku (fig. 1 i 2, pl. 1-3) pozwoliły na pełne przedstawienie charakterystyki mikrofacjalnej i określenie pozycji chronostratygraficznej tych utworów w oparciu o cysty wapiennych Dinoflagellata oraz kalpionelle. Widoczne w profilu muszlowce mają miąższość około 11 metrów (spąg ogniwa muszlowców z Rogoży jest tu nieodsłonięty) i wykształcone są w niższej części jako czerwone wapienie typu wackestone i packstone o mikrofacji sakkokomowo-globochetowej, a w części wyższej - jako czerwonawe i różowe wapienie typu wackestone o mikrofacji kalpionellowo-radiolariowej. Pozycja chronostratygraficzna niższej części muszlowców zawiera się w przedziale od kimerydu i dolnego tytonu (poziomy dinoflagellatowe: Parvula, Moluccana, Borzai oraz Pulla-Tithonica w klasyfikacji Rehakowej 2000) do środkowego tytonu/najniższego górnego tytonu (poziomy kalpionellowe: Chitinoidella oraz Praetintinnopsella w klasyfikacji Rehakowej i Michalika 1997). Datowania te pokazują, że omawiane utwory obejmują przedział stratygraficzny, odpowiadajacy rozwiniętym w klasycznej postaci muszlowcom z Rogoźnika w profilu skałek Rogoży (por. Kutek i Wierzbowski 1986). Wyższa część ogniwa muszlowców z Rogoży w badanym profilu zawiera liczne kalpionelle wskazujące na górnotytoński poziom Crassicolaria i jego wszystkie trzy podpoziomy: Remanei, Brevis i Colomi (por. Reháková i Michalik 1997). Utwory bezpośrednio nadścielające muszlowce z Rogoży w profilu kamieniołomu w Rogoźniku reprezentowane są przez białe i biało-szare wapienie typu wackestone, a lokalnie też mudstone, wykształcone w mikrofacji radiolariowo-kalpionellowej lub kalpionellowej. Obecne tu zespoły kalpionelli wskazują na dolny i środkowy berias (poziom Calpionella), przy czym jak wydaje się, najniższa część tego poziomu, odpowiadająca podpoziomowi Alpina, jest tu nieobecna lub silnie zredukowana miąższościowo. Może to wskazywać na istnienie luki stratygraficznej pomiędzy ogniwem muszlowców z Rogoży, a omawianymi nadległymi wapieniami, które swoim charakterem litologicznym, a także swoją pozycją stratygraficzną, wyraźnie nawiązują do ogniwa wapienia z Sobótki w schemacie litostratygraficznym Birkenmajera (1977).

Both Pseudovolanoceras aesinense and the subspecies Pseudovolanoceras aesinense chignahuapense are shown to occur among Mexican simoceratins. The European species and the Mexican subspecies share the same stratigraphic range in the studied sections, yet they differ in ephebic sculpture. Ecological adaptation to neritic seas corresponding to eastern Mexico areas is interpreted, forcing phenotypic deviation with geographic significance, i.e., subspeciation. The new subspecies would indicate stratigraphic horizons within the Semiformiceras semiforme/Haploceras verruciferum Chronozone in the Mediterranean Tethys. A revision of contemporaneous simoceratins in the Americas is founded on a comparative analysis with respect to the European species P. aesinense.

Opis:
The Late Jurassic shallow-water carbonates with intervening clayey-marly deeper-water deposits in the Holy Cross Mts. area formed over large bank of the elevated part of the Northern Tethyan Shelf during about 12 myr. They comprise three main successions (I, II and III) deposited partly in different environmental conditions, controlled by tectonic and climatic factors, and still preserved in the  north-eastern margin, the north-western margin and the south-western margin of the Holy Cross Mountains. The history of sedimentation is presented according to the concept of the large tectono-stratigraphic units COK, LUK and KVB, which owe their origin to variable rates of tectonic subsidence, as introduced by Kutek (1994) for the area of central Poland. The studied deposits of the COK megasequence cor- responding to the Upper Oxfordian and the Lower Kimmeridgian up to the Hypselocyclum Zone consist of coral limestones, various grained (including oolitic) limestones, and micritic limestones formed over the gradually enlarging shallow-water carbonate platform of the Holy Cross Mts. This platform was subsequently subdivided into two elevated areas, separated by a depressed zone in the middle, bounded by the Nowe Miasto–Iłża–Bałtów Fault Zone in the north-east and the Holy Cross Fault System in the south. The younger mega- sequence LUK with it strongly transgressive character marks the successive stages of the marine transgression which entered the central, lowered part of the area of the Holy Cross Mts. from the west, where it appeared already in the early Hypselocyclum Chron. It succes- sively spread across the Holy Cross Mts. area towards the north-east and south bringing everywhere the deposition of various oyster lu- machelles and marls with ammonites at the end of the Hypselocyclum Chron and during the Divisum Chron of the Early Kimmeridgian to the Acanthicum/Mutabilis Chron of the earliest Late Kimmeridgian. The following megasequence KVB is represented by the detrital lu- machelles and chalky limestones with nereineids of the Eudoxus Chron of the Late Kimmeridgian marking the development of still younger shallow-water carbonate platform in the uplifted areas in the north-eastern and possibly the south-western margins of the moun- tains, allegedly subdivided by a deeper area of sedimentation of marly deposits. The youngest Late Jurassic deposits of the Holy Cross Mts., are very fragmentarily preserved, mostly because of Early Cretaceous uplift and erosion. They suggest an initial episode of complete drowning of the carbonate platform which became covered by marly deposits during the Early Tithonian, and the subsequent restoration of shallow-water carbonate sedimentation at the end of the Early Tithonian.

W pracy przedstawiono charakterystykę stratygraficzną dolnych łupków i wapieni cieszyńskich w oparciu o zróżnicowane spektrum mikroskamieniałości. Rozmieszczenie i migracja tych mikroorganizmów do basenu cieszyńskiego, usytuowanego na południowej krawędzi Platformy Zachodnioeuropejskiej, były określone jego geotektoniczną transformacją. Pozycję niefliszowych, węglanowych utworów basenu (dolne łupki cieszyńskie i dolna część wapieni cieszyńskich) określają zespoły tytońskich mikroskamieniałości z pojedynczymi elementami późnego kimerydu. Natomiast sedymentacja węglanowych turbiditów (wyższa część wapieni cieszyńskich) miała miejsce głównie w okresie berias - walanżyn z prawdopodobną kontynuacją do (?późnego) hoterywu.
Microfossils from the Tithonian-(?Late) Hauterivian carbonate deposits of the Cieszyn Beds (Lower Cieszyn Shales and Cieszyn Limestones) are reviewed. The distribution and migration of microorganisms into the Carpathian (Cieszyn) Basin were determined by geotectonic transformation of the Cieszyn Basin situated on the southern margin of the Western European Platform. The age of the nonflysch carbonate deposition in the Cieszyn basin (Lower Cieszyn Shales, and lower part of the Cieszyn Limestones) is documented by Tithonian calcareous microfossils accompanied by Late Kimmeridgian elements whereas the development of carbonate turbidite deposition in the Beriassian - Valanginian time (Cieszyn Limestones), probably continued up to the (?Late) Hauterivian.
