Opis:
The ornate dog tick, D. reticulatus, is the second most common tick species in Europe. It occurs across the temperate zone of Eurasia, from England and France to the basin of the Jenisej River in Siberia, and the occurrence area ranges from 56–57°N latitude down to 52°N latitude. The range is divided into two distinct parts, the WestEuropean and the Eastern part. The western region covers France and northern Spain, South-western England and Wales, Germany, Austria, Czech, Western Slovakia and Hungary. The eastern region extends from the eastern part of Poland and Slovakia, through Belarus and Russia as far east as Siberia. The southern parts of this region cover Ukraine, Eastern Hungary and Romania. From the 1970s, D. reticulatus has expanded its area of occurrence. In Poland, the front of the area is historically situated along the Vistula River. From the 1980s new tick populations has appeared to the west of this border. In the past years, new populations of D. reticulatus appeared close to the western border of Poland near Szczecin and Wrocław. These are possibly the first observations of the merge between the two separated areas of D. reticulatus occurrence.

Common European ticks, Ixodes ricinus, have been found in forest areas situated within the boundaries of big cities, and in areas changed by anthropogenic pressure. Monitoring I. ricinus, in the areas used by the public for recreation and leisure, makes it possible to assess the risk of infection with the diseases they transmit. The objective of this study was the comparison of the seasonal activity of ticks, I. ricinus, in the afforested areas of the city of Olsztyn and its surroundings. Material and methods. This survey was conducted at sites located in the afforested areas of Olsztyn and within the Warmiński Forest situated about 15 km from Olsztyn. Ticks, I. ricinus, were caught every 10-14 days from April to October 2001 by the commonly applied method of flagging. During each catch, the temperature (T) and relative humidity (%RH) was measured with a thermohygrometer, 1 m above the duff level. Results. The tick population density at the Warmiński Forest site was higher than that at the sites within the city limits (116.8 and 20.5 ticks per 100 m², respectively). Two peaks of tick activity were recorded in this area - the spring peak in June and the autumn peak (much lower) in September. The activity of ticks in the afforested area within the city limits was much lower - only one (spring) peak occurred, which at most sites was observed in June. At all sites, included in the study, the peak activity of ticks was observed in April. Conclusion. The study suggests that the afforested areas outside the city are more dangerous to people than the area within the city because of the large number of ticks there.

Introduction. During feeding, the tick sucks blood from the host along with the pathogens that are in the blood, simultaneously exchanging its own pathogens with the host. Humans can also be a host. It is important to understand the most typical circumstances in which people might become infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. This knowledge will help to prepare health education programmes aimed at the prevention of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the percentage of ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, depending on the circumstances of getting bitten. Materials and method. The research material consisted of ticks acquired from people who had been bitten, and questionnaires completed by these people. 510 ticks were acquired from 257 females and 253 males. Following delivery of a tick for testing, the stage of its development was determined and a molecular assay of Borrelia burgdorferi DNA performed. Results. A positive result of the nested-PCR test was obtained in 78 ticks, which represents 15.30% of all ticks. The infected ticks were collected from male (41 ticks – 52.56%) and female subjects (37 ticks – 47.44%). The biggest number of infected ticks were collected in autumn (54 ticks – 69.23%) and from people who had been into forests (44 ticks – 56.41%). Among the people from whom the infected ticks were acquired, the dominating group included persons over 16 years of age (53 persons – 67.95%) and children aged 0–5 years (16 persons – 20.51%). One in four infected ticks were acquired from the southwestern (20 ticks – 25.64%) and eastern regions of Poland (21 ticks – 26.92%). Conclusion. Infestation of ticks infected with Lyme disease spirochete in this study proved to be variable and depend on the season, the area of tick attack and the region in Poland. The results of the study clearly show that ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi inhabit all regions of Poland. The results are consistent with National Institute of Hygiene data which indicates that Lyme disease cases are recorded in all regions of Poland.

Coraz częstsze występowanie kleszczy w bliskim otoczeniu człowieka i zwierząt przydomowych oraz domowych stwarza idealne warunki do przenoszenia patogenów chorób odkleszczowych. Nie ma wątpliwości, że stale poszukiwane są wszelkie sposoby ochrony osobistej i działania środowiskowe, chroniące przed atakami kleszczy oraz przed konsekwencjami jakie mogą wystąpić po żerowaniu pasożyta.

Introduction. The paper presents epidemiology, routes of infection, forms of the disease, diagnostic and treatment methods, and prophylaxis of tick-borne encephalitis. Aim. In this paper, we present two descriptions of the cases of tick-borne encephalitis. Description of the cases. Case 1. A 60-year-old man with fever up to 39 degrees for 3 days, multi-site headache and other body aches, as well as an earstuck feeling. The day before hospitalization, there was a feeling of numbness on the right side of the face from eye level to the chin and speech distortion. Case 2. A 60-year-old patient with headaches and an increase in temperature to 39 degrees for 3 days, who, approximately, three weeks earlier was ticked by a tick in the lower parts of the back. Conclusion. It is also important for doctors to take a broader view and to make society aware of that Lyme disease is not associated only with Lyme disease. Further work is also needed towards effective treatments for Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE).

Opis:
The ornate dog tick (Dermacentor reticulatus) can be found in the temperate zones of Eurasia. Its area of occurrence is divided into east and west distributions, although the area as a whole is expanding. The initial east-west division was most probably associated with the varied climatic profile of Europe, for example, the range of specific mean winter and summer temperatures: the region where D. reticulatus is absent is characterized by mean winter temperatures between 0°C and 5°C and thin snow cover. The present expansion may be the effect of climate change. The mean temperatures in Europe have increased, the vegetation season has lengthened and positive trends in the number of wet days can be seen. Consequently, northern Europe has become warmer and wetter over the last century. human activity can also influence the spread of D. reticulatus. The liquidation of habitats suitable for D. reticulatus and the eradication of their hosts can play a role, as can changes in agricultural land use, environmental protection and the spread of international tourism and trade. In summary, the expansion of D. reticulatus into new areas could be the synergistic effect of many favourable factors.

Opis:
For the first time in the world literature, the presented study describes oral-anal contact between two sympatric Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus ticks, which are the vectors of many pathogens in Europe. Among the specimens collected in nature, an I. ricinus male was found with the hypostome and chelicerae inserted in the anal aperture of a D. reticulatus female. Given the biological and physiological traits of both species and microorganisms colonising these arthropods, it seems that the interspecific oral-anal contacts between ticks may be an unknown alternative route of transmission of pathogenic and symbiotic microorganisms present in ticks’ alimentary tract, faeces, body surface, and in the haemolymph and organs, taking place when the male’s mouthparts are inserted into the female’s body. The authors suggest that interspecific contacts between ticks in natural conditions can contribute to the spread of some microorganisms among different tick species and their hosts.

Introduction and objectives. The ever-increasing number of patients with tick-borne diseases resulted in the presented study investigating the awareness, attitudes and knowledge among students about the threats arising from tick bites and preventive anti-tick practices. Materials and method. Questionnaires concerning these issues were distributed amongst Czech and Polish university students of science. Responses were analyzed by nationality and by gender. Results. Nearly all respondents were aware of the risks arising from ticks and could name at least one disease transmitted by ticks. The Czech students felt more threatened by tick-borne diseases, had more frequently suffered from Lyme borreliosis and were vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis more often than the Polish students. A large number of the participants applied preventive measures against ticks in order to protect themselves. The Czech students believed in the effectiveness of repellents statistically more often than the Polish students, while effectiveness is the main criterion for selection of the right repellent in both groups. Conclusion. Differences in preferences between the two nations appeared in many areas, e.g. the Czechs felt more threatened by all kind of risks and suffered from Lyme disease more frequently. Gaps can still be found in both the knowledge and behaviour among the respondents. It can be expected that the general public knowledge of this issue is rather limited in comparison with the students participating in the study, who are systematically educated in the field.

Do działań takich należą: stosowanie odpowiedniego ubioru, dokładnie okrywającego całe ciało, stosowanie środków ochronnych (repelentów), kontrola całego ciała, szczepienia ochronne przeciw kleszczowemu zapaleniu mózgu, unikanie spożywania surowego mleka i jego przetworów, szybkie i całościowe usunięcie kleszcza z powierzchni ciała, a także umiejętność rozpoznawania początkowych symptomów choroby (np. rumień). Jedynie poprzez podejmowanie takich działań, można skutecznie zahamować wzrost zachorowalności na choroby przenoszone przez kleszcze.
The morbidity rate of tick-borne diseases has been rising steadily in Europe as well as in Asia and America. The group of most frequently contracted diseases include borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis, granulocytic anaplasmosis, and babesiosis. Tick-borne diseases are usually transmitted by a tick bite during which germs get to the victim’s blood with the tick’s saliva. Another way of transmitting the disease might be by the alimentary system (only in the case of tick-borne encephalitis). Borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis are the diseases the incidence of which has been increasing in Poland in the last few years making them a serious epidemiological threat. The basic principle of tick-borne diseases prophylaxis is raising awareness among individuals exposed to tick bites, which, in turn, provides these individuals with proper protection. These preventive measures include: wearing proper clothes covering the body completely (long-sleeved tops and trousers tucked into the socks), applying tick repellents, checking the body after potential exposure to ticks, vaccination against tickborne encephalitis, avoiding consuming unpasteurised milk and unpasteurised dairy products, quick and careful removal of the whole tick from the body and the ability to recognize early symptoms of the disease (e.g. skin redness). Only by taking these steps can the increase of tick-borne diseases morbidity be stopped.
