    Opis:
    The purpose of this article is to discuss the merits of interdisciplinary research in the humanities. The discussion is conducted on the example of the volume entitled The Thing. Conceptual and Cultural Aspects, edited by Teresa Dobrzyńskaand Raya Kuncheva (2018). The volume approaches the issues of perception and presence of material objects in the linguistic picture of the world, viewed from the perspective of various humanistic disciplines, such as philosophy, semiotics, linguistics and literature. This interdisciplinary research is also cross-cultural in character, being the result of the studies of Bulgarian, Polish and Slovenian scholars from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the New Bulgarian University, the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. This effective mode of research provides a common ground for discussion and opens the space for dialogue between respective scholars, the disciplines they represent and the readers, going beyond the limitations of specific research areas and producing an overall picture of the object.

    Małgorzata Ewa Chrobak’s aim in this article is to read Justyna Bednarek’s books for children from the perspective of “thing studies.” Chrobak investigates how everyday objects and their re-use are represented in a selection of those books, e.g., Nowe przygody skarpetek (jeszcze bardziej niesamowite) [The Socks’ New Adventures (More Amazing Than Ever)]; Banda Czarnej Frotté [The Band of the Black Frotté]; Skarpetki powracają! [The Socks Are Back!]; Zielone piórko Zbigniewa [Zbigniew’s Green Feather]; Skarpetki kontratakują! [The Socks Strike Back!]. Chrobak examines the possibilities of applying two interpretive categories to Bednarek’s fiction, those of “biography of things” and “cultural recycling.”

    This paper considers the proper location and function of critique in establishing a Thomist realism. The author begins by providing a brief explanation of Étienne Gilson’s understanding of critique and why he thinks a “critical realism” is incoherent. Next, the author considers the criticisms made by John Knasas who, from a Gilsonian perspective, argues that Jacques Maritain employs a version of the transcendental method of retorsion in order to justify his realism. Finally, the author offers a Maritainian response to Knasas in which it is argued that Maritain’s account provides a via media between the Transcendental Thomists, on the one hand, and the strict Aristotelian or a posteriori Thomists, on the other.

    Tekst dotyczy twórczości dla dzieci współczesnej polskiej pisarki – Justyny Bednarek. Badaczka zajęła się dwoma pierwszymi częściami cyklu o skarpetkach [część I: Niesamowite przygody 10 skarpetek (czterech prawych i sześciu lewych) – 2015; część II: Nowe przygody skarpetek (jeszcze bardziej niesamowite) – 2017]. Podstawowym tematem jest ukazanie wzoru nowego bohatera literackiego w twórczości pisarki poprzez wyłonienie istotnych „prawd życiowych” reprezentowanych przez postaci skarpetek. Badaczka nawiązuje do refleksji nad przedmiotami w literaturze dziecięcej. Poszukuje kontekstów w pedagogice, psychoanalizie i kulturze. Stara się odkryć świat rzeczy pokazany w utworze poprzez losy poddanych personifikacji, tytułowych bohaterek. Interpretuje postać skarpetki, stworzonej przez Bednarek, widząc w niej wzór kulturowy dla współczesnych czytelników dziecięcych.
    The text concerns the books for children of the contemporary Polish writer - Justyna Bednarek. The researcher dealt with the first two parts of the cycle about socks [part I: Amazing Adventures of 10 Socks (Four Right and Six Left Ones) – 2015; part II: New (Even More Amazing) Adventures of Socks – 2017]. The basic subject is showing a model of a new literary hero in the writer’s works by selecting significant “life truths” represented by the characters of socks. The researcher refers to the reflection on objects in children’s literature. She searches for contexts in pedagogy, psychoanalysis and culture. She tries to discover the world of things shown in the book through the stories of the title characters subject to  personification. She interprets the figure of a sock, created by Bednarek, seeing in it a cultural role model for contemporary children-readers.

    Translation into Polish of a text, orginally published in English, by the British scholar Briony Fer. It concerns the “studioworks” by the American artist Eva Hesse.     The article contains reflections on the “speculative realism”, a direction in 21st century philosophy initiated by Graham Harman, whose books (The Quadruple Object, Object-Oriented Ontology. A New Theory of Everything) continue and process Martin Heidegger’s concept of “the quadruple” (das Geviert), and they also use the ideas of such thinkers as Edmund Husserl and Bruno Latour. The basic problem formulated in this text arises from the following questions: is speculative realism another turn in scientific research, or rather a return to those sources of thinking that take into account the complexity and the irreducibility of reality to any metaphysical instance? What is the role of the “speculative turn” in cultural studies, in various interpretative practices?

    The article analyses transhumanism as the anthropological strategy for the constitution of the objective human world. It presents also the historical forms of the relations between humans and objects, in which the objects are understood as the "sub-handed", "contr-handed", "proto-existing" or as an entertainment media. The subject, who had lost the attribute of "the hard-core" of the modernity, in the form presented by transhumanism becomes "the soft-ware human being" and it integrates systematically with its own artefacts. This point of view allows not only to overcome the absolutization of the antitheticality of the subject and object, but also to formulate the claims with regard to the borders between male and female, old and young, life and dead.
    Artykuł analizuje transhumanizm jako antropologiczną strategię konstytuowania świata przedmiotowego człowieka. Praca rozpatruje historyczne formy współodniesienia człowieka do rzeczy, w której to relacji rzeczy ujmowane są jako „pod-ręczne”, „przeciw-ręczne, „proto-istniejące” i rozrywkowe medium. Podmiot, utraciwszy atrybutywność „twardego rdzenia” nowoczesności, w ujęciu transhumanizmu staje się formą „soft-ludzkiego bytu”, zrastając się stopniowo z własnymi artefaktami. Pozwala to nie tylko przezwyciężyć absolutyzację antytetyczności podmiotu i przedmiotu, ale także formułować roszczenia co do likwidacji granic między męskim i kobiecym, starością i młodością, żywymi i umarłymi.

    A saxophone, a hat and some candles, or on objects in Wiesław Myśliwski’s “A Treatise on Shelling Beans” The present essay aims to bring into focus the role of objects in the narrative strategy adopted by Wiesław Myśliwski in his A Treatise on Shelling Beans. It focuses primarily on two aspects: on the object as a carrier of memory which nests history and on the object as an element constituting the identity of the speaker. The tale of the protagonist-narrator clearly distinguishes things which are the so-called memory anchors. They focus the novel, perform a retardative function, but also develop the story being told. A saxophone, a hat, a plait, candles or a fork – it is around those objects that the narrator circles, and they become carriers of meanings and memories, it is on them that rests the weight of individual human histories. They take on immense significance in the context of the past being narrated, but also project onto the present, built on the foundation of what has already happened, passed away, or what still lasts.

    Mechaniczna kaczka skonstruowana w 1738 roku przez Jacques’a de Vaucansona – le canard digérateur, automat przedrzeźniający procesy fizjologiczne – to zarazem przedmiot symboliczny i symbol przedmiotu. To przechowane w lamusie kulturowej wyobraźni kuriozum dobitnie bowiem unaocznia ontologiczne pęknięcie wpół każdej rzeczy, skłania więc do refleksji nad istotą rzeczy i tym, co określenie to mogłoby dziś oznaczać, jak i nad powikłaną relacją podmiotu z przedmiotem – i przedmiotu z przedmiotem. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia filozoficzny i literacki (m.in. Voltaire, de La Mettrie) kontekst oświeceniowego mechanicyzmu, w którym pojawia się Vaucansonowski wynalazek. Zarazem zaś próbuje ukazać – właśnie jako powiązane z mechanicyzmem oświeceniowym – niektóre elementy „ponowoczesnych” filozofii przedmiotu, m.in. kontrowersyjnej object-oriented ontology Grahama Harmana oraz „rzeczoznawstwa” Bjørnara Olsena.
    Le canard digérateur, i.e. the “digesting” robotic duck constructed in 1738 by Jacques de Vaucanson, is a symbolical object – and a symbol of an object itself. Considering the case of this curiosity, this article tries to describe an ontological rupture within every object. It is a starting point for the reflection on what could be considered a contemporary meaning of “das Ding an sich” category, and likewise on subject/object and object/object relationships. Furthermore, the aim of this article is to present the postmodern philosophies of the object (e.g. G. Harman and B. Olsen) as the reminiscences of the Enlightenment mechanism.

     Le droit romain est souvent considéré comme une matrice intellectuelle, linguistique et conceptuelle des droits européens contemporains et en particulier du droit civil français. Toutefois, si le vocabulaire a persisté dans une certaine mesure, des notions juridiques fondamentales ont subi de profondes transformations au cours de l’histoire à mesure que le droit s’assimilait progressivement à un pouvoir. Il en est ainsi du concept de chose qui désignait à l’origine le procès ou la situation litigieuse mise en forme par la procédure juridique en droit romain. Dans le système contemporain, la chose signifie d’ordinaire un bien matériel indépendant du sujet dans la droite application de la théorisation moderne du droit subjectif. Cette conception est le fruit d’une opposition nette entre le sujet et l’objet, laquelle a promu une catégorisation étanche des personnes et des choses inconnue du droit romain.
    Roman Law is often considered as an intellectual matrix of contemporary laws and in particular French civil law. However, even if the vocabulary persisted, some legal concepts went throught great changes across history as law was step by step related to a subject’s power. The notion of thing originally meant the trial, the case, the litigious situation managed by the legal process. In this way the thing was directly a res iuris. In contemporary law system, the thing ordinarily specifies some goods on which the subject applies his property power. This view is understandable considering the evolution due to the theorization of subjective law that leads to promote a strong and exclusive separation between persons and things while Roman law could imbricate these legal categories.
    Niniejszy artykuł porusza problematykę konceptu res, którego znaczenie ewoluowało na przestrzeni wieków od czasów prawa rzymskiego do czasów współczesnych. Prawo rzymskie często jest postrzegane jako matryca intelektualna współczesnych systemów prawnych. Należy jednak pamiętać, że proces zapożyczania pojęć praw rzymskiego jest zagadnieniem złożonym. W bardzo wielu przypadkach zapożyczona instytucja była modyfikowana i dostosowywana do realiów systemu, który ją recypował. Między innymi doprowadziło to do wyraźnego rozróżnienia na osoby i rzeczy we współczesnych systemach prawnych, mimo że w prawie rzymskim istniała możliwość łączenia tych kategorii.

    Barbie, the doll-symbol, the pop culture icon and significant prop on the artistic, political, social and business scenes, has been arousing emotions in subsequent generations for several decades. It is worth noting, however, that today Barbie is no longer just a passive instrument illustrating desired ideas, but has become a factor creating reality independent of her creators. In the present discussion, the author focuses on the interpretation of the phenomenon of Barbie perceived as an object and a thing in the sense of the Italian philosopher Remo Bodei. The article attempts to trace the transformation of the image of the Barbie doll from its creation to modern times, when its popularity peaked thanks to the excellent marketing strategy accompanying the distribution of Greta Gerwing’s 2023 film Barbie.
