Opis:
In this article, the authors present a model and a method of determining thermal parameters of a single point of the thermal touch screen for the blind and thermal parameters of selected parts of a human hand. Blind people, by using this device can "see" a pattern of dots by feeling hot spots. The thermal touch screen for the blind was used as a calorimeter and enables to calculate the amount of heat provided to a finger at a temperature ranging from 8°C to 52°C, that is the full range of temperature detected by humans. The authors designated thermal conductivity and heat capacity of both Peltier micromodule and parts of the user's hand. Results of the presented research allow optimizing the construction of the thermal touch screen for the blind and may be helpful for thermal modelling of the human body.

Opis:
On-Machine Measurements are a key factor for shorter closed quality control loops in industrial manufacturing. Especially for the production of large components, they promote the first-time-right approach, which is highly desirable, due to small quantities and steep value chains. In contrast to measurement rooms for CMMs, the production environment conditions are unregulated and impact multiple factors along the on-machine measurement metrological chain. As presented as a keynote speech at the XXXI CIRP Sponsored Conference on Supervising and Diagnostics of Machining Systems “MANUFACTURING ACTIVE IMPROVEMEN” by Professor Dr. Robert H. Schmitt, this article reviews current research and ideas regarding on-machine measurements. The authors collect necessary process data with the help of new technologies in the course of digitalization and thus propose a holistic model for systematic error compensation and measurement uncertainty prediction. For assessing the machine’s volumetric accuracy under thermal loads, the authors develop a novel modelling approach, which determines transient geometric errors by abstracting structural parts as spline curve with typical deformation modes. To address the workpiece’s influence on the measurement process, a data-driven framework, fusing real-time sensor-data with the virtual component, is used to model and predict transient thermo-mechanical workpiece states. For dissemination, the authors continue working on ISO standardization and, as subjects of future research, explore new paths in terms of data-driven modelling approaches, using physical abstractions coupled with machine learning and live process data.

Opis:
Temporally and spatially unstable thermal conditions lead to inhomogeneous thermoelastic changes in the workpiece geometry. Consequently, non-negligible geometric deviations are evident, especially when measuring large workpieces with narrow tolerances, which often take place in non-climatized production environments and thus make thermal monitoring indispensable. Accurate determination of the thermoelastic behaviour for complex and large geometries is a challenging task with computationally effortful or less accurate existing solutions. Thus, the development of innovative measurement and modelling approaches is subject of current research, whereat physical validation is a prerequisite. Therefore, the authors developed a method, enabling the emulation of typical process heat cycles on a turbine housing in combination with a geometric measurement system. The idea is to provide reproducible and reversible thermal conditions on a representative large workpiece and to investigate the resulting geometric deformation in an economically viable way. Throughout this study, an analogy test rig is presented, integrating different temperature sensors, two geometric measurement systems and thermal deformation models into one demonstrator. The demonstrator's first applications show insightful results, revealing accordance, but also unexpected deviations between the predicted and measured quantities. Moreover, it provides great potential for validation of more complex modelling approaches and innovative thermal condition monitoring systems for large precision workpieces.

A variety of thermal models has been proposed to predict the temperatures inside modern processors. In this paper, we describe and compare two such approaches, a detailed FEMbased simulation and a simpler architectural compact model. It is shown that both models provide comparable results when it comes to predicting the maximal temperature, however there are also non-negligible differences when estimating thermal gradients within a chip. Furthermore, transient simulation results show some differences in temperature profile during processor heating.

Opis:
Hydrocarbon generation in the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic potential source rocks of the Polish Basin was investigated by 1-D thermal maturity modelling in 90 boreholes across the basin. This identified major zones potentially worthy of further exploration efforts. The maximum burial depth of the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic reached >5 km during the Late Cretaceous leading to maximum thermal maturity of organic matter. Hydrocarbon generation development reveals considerable differences between particular zones of the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic. The kerogen transformation ratio (TR) in the Zechstein Main Dolomite reached values approaching 100% along the basin axis. The TR in the Upper Triassic source rocks is generally lower than in the Zechstein Main Dolomite due to lesser burial. The Upper Triassic source rocks have the highest TR values (>50%) along the basin axis, in the area between boreholes Piła IG 1 and Piotrków Trybunalski IG 1, with the most pronounced zone in the Krośniewice Trough (i.e., between the Krośniewice IG 1 and Budziszewice IG 1 boreholes), where the TR reached >90%. The Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic entered the oil window in the Late Triassic to Early–Middle Jurassic, respectively. Hydrocarbon generation continued until the Late Cretaceous, and was completed during tectonic inversion of the basin.

Opis:
In case of energy sector it was assessed that due to the significant decrease of electricity generation efficiency, post combustion CO2 capture increases energy cost of electricity generation independently from technology applied. Therefore, the minimisation of energy demand for CCS is one of most important problems that should be solved. The paper presents results of calculations of 900MWe supercritical power plant integrated with VPSA (Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption) separation system as well as with CO2 compression system necessary for transportation purposes. The main aim of analysis performed was the assessment of possibilities of heat recuperation from multistage intercooled compression system into the hot water regeneration system of a power plant. The different structures of integration were analysed. Moreover, due to the different structures of compression systems, different amount of heat at different parameters was available for recuperation. The calculation were performed for heat amount in range of 130 to 196 MWt which were introduced into the regeneration system with water at 120oC to 225oC. The results obtained show that by properly chosen parameters of heat as well as distribution of heat into the proposed inlet places it is possible to increase the total energy efficiency of power plant of about 2 percentage points in respect of configuration without heat recuperation.

This paper presents a study of the possibilities of evaluating thermal parameters of single and multilayer structures using dynamic thermography. It also discusses potential uses of lock-in thermography. It presents a simulation of a periodic excitation of a multilayer composite material. In practice, the described methods can be employed in various applications, for example, in multilayer nonwoven microelectronic components manufactured from hemp fibers, chemical fibers, with an addition of electrically conducting fibers, and in medicine and biology. This paper describes tests conducted with lock-in thermography on carbon fibre reinforced composites with implanted delamination defects. Lock-in thermography is a versatile tool for non-destructive evaluation (NDE). Lock-in thermography is a fast, remote and non-destructive procedure. Hence, it has been used to detect delaminations in the composite structure of aircraft. This method directly contributes to an improvement in safety.

The drilling process with solid carbide tools with minimum quantity lubrication is under development in the automotive industry due to its high productivity and its environmental benefit. Because of the poor cooling performance when using MQL, a high amount of heat remains in the workpiece, which induces macroscopic thermal distortions and inaccurate parts. This paper presents a methodology to model the thermal distortion of a complex part having a large number of holes. The heat flux entering into the workpiece during each drilling operation is calibrated based on embedded thermocouples and on geometrical observations of the drill surface. Finally, it is shown how the model enables the optimization of a drilling sequence so as to minimize the thermal distortion and the accuracy of the machined part.

The research focuses on the solutions to avoid overheating the intake and exhaust valves due to engine overload. Subaru EJ25 engines are currently mounted in passenger cars such as Subaru Impreza but the author's innovative idea is to use them in small passenger airplanes. The paper describes the coupled thermo - mechanical load model of a supercharged Subaru EJ25 engine. The engine piston was tested thermally and mechanically, and the intake and exhaust valves only thermally. The calculations were done using the finite element method (FEM) in ABAQUS 6.10. Parts where divided into Hex and Tet mesh elements, depending of their geometry. The models used in the simulation were previously created using CATIA v5. Because there were only separate parts, the authors used only Part Module. The process of 3D scanning based on the method of reverse engineering was for fine mapping the surface of the examined parts, e.g. a piston. The boundary conditions and material properties are based on the literature and the information provided by the companies that sell spare parts for this engine. The simulations were done for varied heating times and mechanical load (25, 50, 100, 250, 400 seconds).

This paper will present selected problems connected with modelling of multi-layer pavements. Multi-layer pavement models, which utilize solutions such as the one of Boussinesq, Burmister, Kogan, Odemark and others, contain many simplifications, which bas a significant influence on the estimated real value of stress, strain, deflection as well as on the coefficient of pavement layers interaction. In the article based on the experiments carried out, we want to present our own layered-pavement models and solutions to them, which can be used mainly in the diagnostics of bearing capacity. The estimation of bearing capacity is conducted on the basis of full time data obtained with the FWD device. Moreover, the conclusions implicated by the above mentioned analysis are of big importance in design and operation process of road and airfield pavements. They pertain not only to the influence of modulus and thickness of particular layers but also to the way of pavement layers interaction, Poisson's coefficient, thermal characteristics and others.
