Reconstruction of connections at supraphrastic level of information structure in discourseThe aim of this paper is to analyse the connections between global theme and thematic segments which constitue the intermediate level of information structure in discourse. The information structures are defined as hierarchically organized thematic-rhematic structures and, in their thematic part, the author distinguishes three levels represented by: global theme, themes of thematic segments and themes of phrases. The author focuses her attention on explicite and implicite connections appearing in the place where global theme and different thematic segments contact. Rekonstrukcja nawiązań na poziomie ponadzdaniowym struktury informacyjnej dyskursuCel artykułu to analiza nawiązań między tematem globalnym a segmentami tematycznymi, które tworzą pośredni poziom struktury informacyjnej dyskursu. Struktura ta jest zdefiniowana jako hierarchicznie zorganizowana struktura tematyczno-rematyczna. W części tematycznej wyróżniono trzy poziomy reprezentowane przez temat globalny, tematy segmentów dyskursu i tematy zdań. Przeprowadzone analizy koncentrują się na eksplicytnych i implicytnych nawiązaniach wyższego rzędu pojawiających się w tych miejscach struktury informacyjnej dyskursu, w których spotykają się jednostki pierwszych dwóch poziomów: temat globalny i różne segmenty tematyczne.

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness and practicality of modules used to teach the elementary students in Ambon, Moluccas, Indonesia and as a result generate a thematic module based on Numbered Heads Together (NHT) cooperative learning model. We adopted a 4D development model, which comprises four stages: define, design, develop, and disseminate to produce the module. A survey and interviews were conducted at the define stage and the results proved that the students used modules which only accommodate the traditional learning model. These modules did not provide the students with activities which could help improve their thinking skills. At the define stage, a thematic module was created and at the develop stage, it was revised based on suggestions from experts and the results of the field try-outs. The use of the module showed a significant improvement in student achievement. The final step of the development of the module was performed by providing teachers with a training program on teaching resources and lesson study. Future research is expected to be empirical so that it can investigate the effect of the thematic module on students’ higher order thinking skills.

The aim of the paper is to present an analysis of the thematic-rematic structure of Polish equivalents of interrogative sentences such as What do you think he had done?, namely of questions about some component of subordinate clause. In Polish, an interrogative pronoun has to be placed within the subordinate clause (it can be moved to the beginning of the sentence, but such an operation is connected with the contrastive intonation of the pronoun). The author claims that questions of the given type are to be interpret just as other wh-questions. She cites the theory of thematic-rematic structure of questions of A. Bogusławski and modifies this theory in order to account for interrogative sentences with counter-factive predicates, such as to lie.

The author reflects upon a possible empirical interpretation of Wittgenstein's well known thesis 7 in his Tractatus, as applied to some problems encountered when dealing with TRS. The most general idea is that TRS is what 'shows', in Wittgenstein's sense, rather than what can be rendered in terms of words; the reason being the threatening infinite regress behind any attempt at reducing the phenomena of TRS to primitive concepts as represented by definite segmental units. Subsequently, the author touches upon certain more specific themes in the relevant domain. One of them is the problem of how to account for non-restrictive attributes or "appositions". The author stresses the fact that they do not yield to interpretation in terms of something p such that 'speaker said that p'. Another issue is that of an adequate interpretation of 'I'. The author shows irreparable inadequacies inherent in Wierzbicka's as well as in his own (previous) accounts of 'I'. According to his new proposal, 'I' is equivalent to 'someone' with the first subscript (in an arbitrary list of subscripts) appended to the organism / body of the current speaker; the latter just shows in Wittgenstein's sense.

In 2018, 100 years had passed since the Central Statistical Office of Poland (since 2017: Statistics Poland – GUS) was established. This anniversary was considered an opportunity for preparation of a series of cartographic publications, i.e. 16 statistical atlases of Polish voivodships (first order administrative units) and the Statistical atlas of Poland. Publication of such a series of atlases is a new undertaking in the history of Polish statistics – it involved both the employees of the head office of Statistics Poland in Warsaw and the staff of statistical offices in 16 voivodships. Until 2018 Polish public statistics did not have many such publications. The first atlas publication of Central Statistical Office was Republic of Poland – statistical atlas released in 1930. The next Statistical atlas, covering all of Poland, was published only in 1970. Subsequent statistical atlases were published over 30 years later – the atlases of five voivodships, published in 2006−2016, and the Demographic atlas of Poland published in 2017. Atlases for individual voivodships were prepared by the relevant regional statistical offices. The project was managed by the head office of Statistics Poland which prepared the guidelines and provided technical and substantive supervision. Due to different sizes of voivodships, the atlases were prepared in scales from 1:900,000 (Opolskie and Świętokrzyskie Voivodships) to 1:1,500,000 (Mazowieckie and Wielkopolskie Voivodships). A standard page contains a map of a voivodship divided into communes (gminas) or counties (powiats) and a map of Poland at the scale of 1:9,500,000 divided into voivodships. The number of pages of the voivodship atlas is 104 with 165 maps: 76 maps of voivodships, 76 maps of Poland, one administrative map of Poland at the scale of 1:3,800,000 and 12 maps of the European Union or Europe at the scale of 1:21,500,000. The Statistical atlas of Poland was published in early July 2018. It consists of 216 pages, with 281 maps (full-page maps of Poland at the scale of 1:3,800,000, quarter-page maps of Poland at the scale of 1:9,000,000, full-page maps of Europe or the European Union at the scale of 1:21,500,000, and half-page world maps at the scale of 1:200,000,000) and 175 charts/graphs. Maps made by using quantitative cartographic presentation methods predominate in the atlas – choropleth and diagram methods are used most frequently (they are observed on 263 maps). Statistical atlases of voivodships and the Statistical atlas of Poland count 1888 pages in total with 2934 maps, on which the development of the country is presented in relation to regional and local conditions. All atlases are bilingual, Polish-English. Publications printing was co-financed from EU funds within the Operational Programme Technical Assistance 2014–2020. Noise is subject to compulsory mapping. Access to environmental acoustical data should be available to the public user. These tasks result directly from the provisions of the Environmental Protection Law Act – EPL Act. The method of their implementation is presented using the example of the Poznań Spatial Information System. Available data sources are indicated, mainly in relation to cartographic visualisation of the presented contents.

The objective of this study was to identify teachers’ diffi culties in implementing thematic learning in elementary schools. The study was phenomenology-type qualitative research. Data were collected through interviews followed by focus group discussion; the focus group discussion involved 15 elementary school teachers from eight provinces that had implemented Curriculum 2013. The data were analyzed by means of Cresswell’s steps. The results of the study showed that teachers encountered obstacles in selecting appropriate problems and themes within thematic, scientific and problem-based learning and in managing time for project-based learning. The availability of learning facilities was still limited. The problems found at the assessment stage was the teachers’ capacity in selecting appropriate techniques, in creating good instruments and in formulating clear assessment criteria.

In the era of interdisciplinary research supported by IT solutions, a special role is played by digital source repositories. The digital turn has contributed to their considerable development, and the application of new technologies has largely changed the current methods of research work. This facilitates pooling and structuring dispersed collections e.g. as part of thematic repositories, which collect and share thematically related resources. Metadata, which allow efective searching and identification of resources, are an important element of their function. The objective of the article is to present a procedure for the development of metadata aimed at creation of a thematic database of dispersed sources remaining after the Paris Peace Conference ending World War I. Based on the metadata development procedure, the author discusses the diagnosed problems associated with e.g. the specificity of the analyzed sources.

For a long time, Thematic roles have received much attention, raising many disputes and controversies, but they still remain a ‘murky construct’ (Newmeyer, 2010, Rissman and Majid, 2019). Dowty’s words of 1986 that “the perennial vexing problem is the lack of agreement among linguists as to which thematic roles exist, and the absence of any obvious way to decide this question” still hold true. Departing from the traditional ‘intuitive semantic’ approach, I provided evidence that Thematic roles are indispensable components of image schemas, and constitute a scaffolding for language structures (2022, forthcoming). A natural question arose then, where they come from in the image schemas. Fillmore (1968) proposed that they may be, “presumably, innate concepts”, while Langacker (1991) alluded to their “nonlinguistic” origin. The present paper argues that Thematic roles come from “nonlinguistic” sources, i.e., human interpretation and categorization of reality, completing the Thematic roles embodiment process.

Geoinformation can be defined according to [9] as a discipline dealing with the collecting, obtaining, gathering, processing, transmission, analysis and interpretation of data about the Earth. These data are collected for centuries on maps. Regardless of forms of cartographic elaborations changing with the development of technics, the basic function of each map (and especially of thematic maps) was, is and will be the transfer of data about the world in the graphic form. The first maps were prototypes of modern geoinformation systems. In the literature one can find many definitions of these systems. According to [6] it is a computer information system for entering, storing, processing and the presentation of spatial data, which primary function is to support the decision. The purpose of this publication is the cross-sectional analysis of the methods and forms of presentation of maps (with particular emphasis on thematic maps) in Poland and in the world over the centuries. From woodcuts or clay tablets to today created and widely used interactive map. The basic thesis of the publication is to see the map as a basis for geoinformation system at every stage of development.
Geoinformację można zdefiniować za [9] jako dziedzinę zajmującą się zbieraniem, pozyskiwaniem, gromadzeniem, przetwarzaniem, przesyłaniem, analizą i interpretacją informacji o Ziemi. Dane te od wieków przedstawiane są na mapach. Niezależnie od zmieniających się wraz z rozwojem techniki form opracowań kartograficznych podstawową funkcją każdej mapy (a szczególnie map tematycznych) był, jest i będzie przekaz danych o otaczającym świecie w formie graficznej. Pierwsze mapy stanowiły prototypy współczesnych systemów geoinformacyjnych. W literaturze można znaleźć wiele definicji tych systemów. Według [6] jest to komputerowy system informacji służący do wprowadzania, gromadzenia, przetwarzania oraz przedstawiania danych przestrzennych, którego podstawową funkcją jest wspomaganie decyzji. Celem niniejszej publikacji jest przekrojowa analiza metod i form przedstawienia map (ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem map tematycznych) w Polsce i na świecie na przestrzeni wieków: od drzeworytów czy glinianych tabliczek do współcześnie tworzonej i powszechnie wykorzystywanej interaktywnej mapy. Podstawową tezą publikacji jest zasadność postrzegania mapy jako podstawy systemu geoinformacyjnego na każdym etapie rozwoju.

The article discusses Polish sentences which are based on the same pattern: '...w taki sposób, że...'. The semantic analysis of phrases with the sequence sposób 'manner' has shown that the basic context for the concept of a way, or manner, of doing something accounts for the relational character of this idea. The relation in question occurs between the action, which is mentioned in a sentence, and its description. This meaning can be found/indicated thanks to the thematic-rhematic structure of sentence which distinguishes two functions of '... w taki sposób, że...': expressing the process of doing something, and expressing the manner of doing the thing in question.

How to analyze contextuality of metatextual language units? Notes on the relation: TRS – particle semanticsThe presented article is devoted to further (after Kisiel 2010) discussion about contextuality of metatextual language units, especially particles. Having selected contextual particles as an example, the author shows how specific structuralisation of TRS is strictly connected with particle meaning. The observation leads to the conclusion that examination of TRS cannot be avoided when analysing particles. Untangling particles meaning has to be based on describing the TRS they work on. Such a procedure has been only recently applied to Polish lexicography.

This article aims to propose a treatment of the internal morphological organization of words, based on the idea that morphology is part of syntactic computation. We disagree with Distributed Morphology model, whereby morphology is identified with a post-syntactic component conveying an information ‘separated from the original locus of that information in the phrase marker’ (Embick and Noyer 2001: 557) by rules manipulating syntactic nodes. We also consider inadequate the costly and complex syntactic structures that cartographic approach maps into inflectional strings. We pursue a different conceptualization assuming that morphology is governed by the same rules and principles of syntax. Sub-word elements, including inflections, thematic exponents and clitics, are fully interpretable and enter (pair-)merge operations (in the sense of Chomsky 2020a,b, 2021) according to their content, giving rise to complex words.

The aim of this study is to present the results of analyses of PhD dissertations defended abroad and in the Czech Republic in the years 2006–2012 in the field of foreign language didactics. Building on a body of previous work, methodological background for a meta-analysis of the topics of PhD dissertations defended in selected countries abroad as well as for an analysis of PhD dissertations defended in the Czech Republic is presented. The results are then discussed and compared. We conclude that the range of topics addressed in the Czech dissertations does not significantly differ from the state of art abroad, although some areas, such as language learners, seem to be under-researched in the Czech Republic.
