Opis:
Jerzy Szaniawski's plays enjoyed enormous popularity in the 1920s and 1930s in Polish theatres. This study is an attempt to reconstruct and interpret the staging of Ptak (12th September 1924; three performances) in the Town Theatre in Lublin at the time when Józef Grodnicki managed the theatre. As a matter of introduction, some features of Szaniawski's writing have been given, his liaison with the “Reduta” and Juliusz Osterwa. Then the paper shows how our home critics received the work, and describes the plot and construction of the work. The considerations here are not reduced only to an attempt to reconstruct the course of the staging, the structure of particular actors' play, or an outlook of the stage decoration, but also it analyses how it was received by the Lublin public, especially the critics. Because the Lublin reviewers were highly affected by their personal lives, the paper also elaborates on them and on the mechanisms that ruled the then press.

Opis:
The text is devoted to an emigration poem by Stanisław Baliński, A Night at the Grand Theatre (1943), in which the Warsaw opera became a synecdoche of the pre-war Warsaw, and the entire poetic structure is built as a kind of virtual stage on which special characters appear and perform their roles. This text is an interesting contribution to the research on the influence of the imaginarium of the musical theatre on the imagination of twentieth-century poets, and at the same time performs a specific functionalisation of the operatic character – in several meanings of the word.

Opis:
The article presents the originality and the timeless meaning of the 1959 Eugène Ionesco play, Rhinoceros which is situated, despite its unambiguous ‘animal’ parable, within the Theatre of the Absurd. In the perspective of the author of the article it is not only Ionesco’s protest against fascism conditioned by the political circumstances which is significant in particular time but the work portraying mechanisms of influence on society, which appears as ‘the masses’, the whole of the society, devoid of any deeper connection with ethical and moral values of humanistic culture, common to all authoritarian ideologies. Among others, the article refers to opinions of scholars of drama and theatre critics on the evolution of Ionesco’s dramatic works and such sociological‑cultural and literary contexts as: 1) José Ortega y Gasset’s thoughts on brutal ‘direct action’ applied to the masses by force factors and on ‘fear of touch’ felt by an individual defending the values of humanistic culture, included in The Revolt of the Masses; 2) plays by Ionesco in which the theme of metamorphosis is important; 3) other works of the Theatre of the Absurd of similar meaning but using different artistic means, Samuel Beckett’s Catastrophe in particular.

Opis:
The article deals with the problem of the historical transformation of French and Polish cabaret songs at the turn of the 20th century and the consequent changes in relations between the two cultural circles. The work is focused not only on a comparative analysis of the text and music material from Parisian and Polish cabarets, but also takes into account the sociological context of their functioning. This allows the reader to understand similarities and differences in the creation and development of cabaret life in France and Poland. The article analyzes in detail a unique method used to disseminate songs in France (by the societies of singers called les goguettes, les cafés chantants, les cafés-concerts and cabarets) and the absence of such the phenomenon in Poland. It is shown that these cultural incompatibilities may be one of reasons for the gradual movement of Polish authors and artists away from the conventional and aesthetic style, adopted initially from the Parisian cabarets that were perceived as model ones in Europe (eg. Le Chat Noir or Le Mirliton).
