Opis:
This article is about social and cultural time as a constant and recurrent motive in Zygmunt Bauman’s work. Time and detemporalisation processes, continuity and mutability, permanency and episodicity are all sometimes more, sometimes less clearly outlined but always present themes in his analyses of modernity, postmodernity, globalisation, consumption, consumer society, contemporary social polarisation, and the condition of the socially excluded. This recurrent presence of the temporal dimension in Bauman’s writings means that his entire work can be viewed as an original, multidimensional, coherent, consistent and also very interesting voice on time and its vicissitudes in our present world. Bauman’s contribution to the temporal analysis of our age is presented against the broader backdrop of contemporary reflection on the issue of time.

Aktualne problemy eschatologii (1992 r.). Rozdział trzeci jest próbą porównania eschatologii obu tekstów.
Death is a part of human life – a part which cannot be deleted. Both earlier and nowadays it pushes people to ask about its reason, consequences, nature and how to get ready for it. The response for the ultimate question were books about the art of dying, which first of all were written in the Middle Ages.People are dying also today, so there is a need to work out a “new art of dying”, which is compatible with the mentality of a contemporary human being. The first step is to analyse if and how medieval texts can help or explain it. An analysis in the light of contemporary eschatology of one of such texts: De artre moriendi written by J. Gerson is the point of the following article. The first chapter is about the final things in human life such as death, paradise, purgatory and hell, which are described by Gerson. In the second chapter there is presented the teaching of the International Theological Commission concerning those issues enclosed in the document Some current questions in Eschatology (1992). The third chapter is an attempt to compare the eschatology of both texts. The study allows to draw a conclusion that the medieval treatise of Gerson is not an anachronism, but might be a precious inspiration for contemporary theologians. Eschatology included in that treatise is faithful to contemporary eschatology, so it is possible, after doing some revisions and additions, to build ars moriendi for contemporary human based on it.

Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 56 (2008), issue 3. In his Meditations, the Stoic emperor Marcus Aurelius very often resorts to the motif of passing and transitory nature of human life. On the one hand, this permanent and pessimistic motif may be interpreted as a certain kind of spiritual exercise, practised not only by Stoics. On the other hand, we cannot exclude that this is a manifestation of the author’s personal views and experiences. Marcus often touched upon the topic of death, a fact that was not necessarily an expression of his fear of what was inevitable since, according to the Stoic doctrine, death belongs to the immutable order of the world and is congruous with nature, hence it is completely acceptable. Marcus Aurelius is rather afraid of the transitory nature of the moment that we are given. He stresses that life “is passing away” each day and, at the same time, he is tormented with the lack of time that must be filled with good and respectable behaviour, with life in conformity with reason, or the deity. Marcus Aurelius is not frightened by death itself, but by the possibility to lose control over one’s life, loss of consciousness, and the ability to reflect (in case of an illness or old age). He also firmly stresses the importance of favours that we may and should render to others, which besides properly forming one’s soul, are the goal of human life.

If we talk about dilemmas and the ethical challenges of the present time, then we suggest simulta- neously that these problems differ in some way from universal ethical questions, important to man in every epoch and in every circumstances, and from these issues which were important in the past or will turn out important in the future, however, at present the general agreement concerning definite decisions prevails. Then it is necessary to identify those special problems of the present time and point out the features due to which they acquire special significance to us.

If we talk about dilemmas and the ethical challenges of the present time, then we suggest simultaneously that these problems differ in some way from universal ethical questions, important to man in every epoch and in every circumstances, and from these issues which were important in the past or will turn out important in the future, however, at present the general agreement concerning definite decisions prevails. Then it is necessary to identify those special problems of the present time and point out the features due to which they acquire special significance to us. However, presenting the matter in such a way does not seem fully justified, because the times in which we live differ in many regards from all mankind has ever experienced. The development of science and technology and increasing possibility of activities resulting from them, and also a level of complexity of relations linking the acting subject with other different subjects and the external world, caused that also ethical problems have taken on a whole new dimension. The issues which in the beginning of the XXth century were considered as minor or banal (e.g. the problem of man’s influence on the environment) became the key ethical questions in the course of several decades stirring up deep divisions not only among ethicists, but also in the whole society. In majority, they are however practical problems connected with certain general philosophical theories, such as abortion, euthanasia or medical experiments. In the last years they grew almost into symbols, and the way of their deciding shows a general ideological attitude, and even allows to define political views.

Opis:
One of the most substantial interdisciplinary topics in the study of contemporary culture is change in social time, which is expressed in the compression of time (and space) and changing relationships between the past, present, and future. Research and analysis situate the present in an exceptional position in contemporary culture, providing us with the term ‘culture of the present.’ At the same time, however, we are dealing with a phenomenon labeled the ‘explosion of memory’—an astounding multidirectional and multifaceted rise in interest in the past. It is therefore worthwhile to investigate the structures and mechanisms of collective memory, as well as how the past is defined in contemporary culture, from the perspective of time as a social and cultural phenomenon. Questions should be asked regarding the mechanisms that unite the dominance of the present in culture with a rising interest in the past. The perspective of social time reveals that the ‘culture of the present,’ the current dominating forms of memory intensification, and the heightened awareness of the past, are influenced by the same or similar factors. These include new media and communication technologies, as well as consumption and popular culture, which change the structure of time, condense the time horizon, alter the manner in which the past is experienced, and modify the mechanisms of collective memory.
