The subject of this paper is the archaeologically created past, seen as a reservoir of pleasure. The topic is discussed in comparison with changes of the contemporary man’s approach to the past. The organising motif of my reflections is the category of pleasure and different ways of pursuing it by people, mainly by means of broadly understood play. I propose here two theses, namely: (1) in the contemporary world the past, being a point of reference for archaeological investigation, may constitute a source of pleasure or inspiration to search for pleasure; (2) the ways of presenting the past to a certain degree have been subjugated by the rules that have been reserved for the domains of entertainment and consumption. This paper will relate to: (1) the pleasure of exploring of the past; (2) the pleasure of re-enacting and performing the past, and (3) the pleasure of playing with the past during archaeological fêtes.

In the article an attempt has been made to conceptualise the presence and range of the functioning of the products of archaeological knowledge, indirectly also archaeology, in social space in modern Poland, in the context of broader transformations of modern man’s attitude towards the past. The ambition of the author has been to formulate certain regularities, observable in the processes of making prehistoric past present in modern times and to formulate specific developmental trends in this respect. The article describes the basic strategies of manifesting archaeological past, and shaping their trends, namely sensational attitude towards archaeological discoveries, reconstructionism, dramatisation of the past and its festivalisation. It also discusses the characteristic elements of the aforementioned trends, which create the specifics of the modern man’s approach towards the past, including the prehistoric past.

The article attempts at capturing a linguistic image of the past in A. Asnyk’s texts and presenting symbolic relations between the abstract meaning and the attributes ascribed to it. The author analyzed not only the metaphors containing the lexeme past but also any synonymic notions, periphrases, phrases and terms referring to olden days. On this basis, several models of the past have been distinguished (the past is a living creature, the past is a plant, the past are different kinds of objects and containers, the past is a natural element, the past is nothingness, death and destruction, the past is a memory, the past is a herald of the future) under the condition that the applied divisions are therefore relative due to elusiveness of the described phenomenon. In reality, the past is never perceived, and therefore it cannot be conceptualized univocally.

Some regimes try to force a complete break with the past and even to start from the year zero. Throughout history, such iconoclastic breaks were meant to erase, once and for all, the entire past or to destroy as many of its relics and symbols as possible, and either to reach or regain some faraway golden age. Iconoclastic breaks have thus far enjoyed less systematic attention than the breaks commonly indicated by the phrase “transitional justice,” although their legacy usually leaves deeper scars. My goal, then, is to explore these iconoclastic breaks with the past. I conclude that there are three main types: communist, nationalist and Islamic. The central iconoclastic idea is “historical law” for the first type, “homogenization” for the second and “purity” for the last. Each has its own vision of history: the first is predominantly future-oriented, the second present-oriented, and the third past-oriented.

Historical consciousness can has two meanings: either a set of images of the past or a feeling of individual's historicity, awareness of being between the past and the future. The article is devoted to the Polish society's historical consciousness in both meanings. The differentiation of the two aspects of historical consciousness allows demonstrating both the fluidity of everyday consciousness in ideological terms and the cultural transformations linked to the industrial and technological development. There are three national traditions that can be discerned within the aspect of remembered past: statehood, liberation struggle and national culture. Traditions are defined through values (e.g. strong state, patriotism, science and culture etc.) as well as historic figures symbolizing these values (e.g. Kazimierz the Great, Kosciuszko, Nicolas Copernicus). The boundaries between these traditions are however permeable, the attempts of drawing clear-cut socio-demographic profiles of the followers of these traditions were not successful (despite some notable differences, e.g. between men and women). This supports the thesis that national tradition in Poland homogenizes. The analysis of the historical consciousness' other aspect - the temporal dimension of the past - brought slightly different results. The research revealed that an attitude of accepting the past can have two different bases, these were coined an escapist attitude (the negative evaluation of the present without idealization of the own group's past) and a historicist attitude (tendency to idealize own group's past). The differentiation of these two attitudes was influenced by socio-demographic factors, especially by world view and age.

Since 1945, in Opole Silesia, there have occurred unique processes of forming regional community of varied socio-demographic structure, identity, different experience of history, attitudes and views. Among the social groups inhabiting the region, a significant place is occupied by the population displaced from the Former-Eastern-Lands of Poland, living beside settlers, that is people who came here from others regions of Poland, as well as native Silesians. I present, then, the processes of shaping and changes in the individual and group consciousness in the generation–oriented dimension and also the evolution of the memory of the past and its influence on the current social life. A particularly interesting problem is the attitudes of the young generation towards the transmission of the family remembrance of the past, since – in the light of the research results – the thesis can be put forwards, which needs further verifying in broadly–conducted research into this group though, that are hard to foresee at the moment, the displaced will make a rather disappearing group in Opole-Silesia.

he purpose of this article is to express, expand and sharpen views concerning history, historiography, historical evaluation and reliability, and the main literary nature of the book of Chronicles as a whole in its own historical context. These are vital issues that have direct implications for understanding the book, its content, its purpose, and credibility as a source for the history of Israel in the monarchic period, and for the development of Judaism in the Second Temple era. In order to accomplish this task, some common features of the Chronicler’s writing and the related ancient Near Eastern and Greco-Roman historical writings are provided. Furthermore, the presumed Chronicler’s lines of thought and his evaluations of sources are scrutinized and exemplified, and the historical trustworthiness of some details, which appear only in Chronicles, is examined in order to demonstrate that the book contains some potential reliable data.

The article recounts actions oriented at experiencing and reliving culinary traditions, undertaken by the Local Action Group of the “Mroga” Society for the Local Community Development. The Society operates in five communes: Koluszki, Brzeziny, Dmosin, Jeżów and Rogów, located in the north-eastern part of the current Łódź voivodeship, east of the city of Łódź. In the past, this area, which bordered regions whose characteristic features indicated their distinct regional identities (the Łęczyca Land and the Łowicz Principality from the north, the Rawa Land from the east, the Opoczno and Piotrków Lands from the south, and Łódź from the west), was devoid of definite features typical to folk culture. Currently it is still an area which, due to the absence of a consistent and enduring cultural foundation to refer to, cannot be described in the categories of an ethnographic or geographic region. By following the tourist trail laid by the Society, known as the “Appetite Trail”, I reconstruct the vision of what the community resident in the five communes covered by the activity of the “Mroga” Local Action Group defines as the region’s culinary tradition, and I deconstruct the Group’s actions that reduce the tradition to the level of a tourist attraction.

This paper discusses the poetic modes of recounting the past in a Sanskrit mahākāvya titled Sāḷuvābhyudaya, authored by Rājanātha Ḍiṇḍima ca. 1480 AD, to eulogise Sāḷuva Narasiṃha, the soon-to-be founder of the Sāḷuva dynasty of Vijayanagara. Focusing on the poem’s second canto, which is built on the theme of divine intervention culminating in the miraculous conception of the future, I argue that depiction of Sāḷuva Narasiṃha as the Ahobilanarasiṃha incarnate – a rather locally known form of Narasiṃha presiding over a Vaishnava religious centre in Ahobilam (currently Andhra Pradesh) – was aimed at enunciating his martial power and justifying his claims to the Vijayanagara throne, while simultaneously revealing the growing interests of Vijayanagara rulers in cooperating with temples and religious institutions.

The purpose of this article is to substantiate the thesis that, in the Marvel 1602 series, there is a common denominator of the narrative mechanisms with which its author embeds fiction in history and reworks selected characters from the so-called mainstream Marvel continuity. As such denominator, I see the idea of repeatability of situational and behavioural patterns. With this end in view, I open this work by outlining how selected events of the so-called “age of heroes” are transplanted into the Elizabethan age. Second, I show how chosen Marvel characters are reworked to match the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century context. Third, I expand on the reiterative quality of the mechanisms the author uses for these purposes to support the view that the repeatability of situational and behavioural patterns is the main idea informing the narrative structure of Marvel 1602. In the conclusion section, I capitalise on the presented findings and suggest their potential implications.

Obecne budowle wzgórza zamkowego w większości powstały w początku XIX wieku. Do najstarszych związanych z funkcjonowaniem grodu kasztelańskiego należą XIII – wieczna baszta – wieża obronno – mieszkalna i kaplica św. Trójcy, której budowę wiąże się z działalnością Kazimierza Wielkiego. Zamek, wybudowany również przez tego króla, rozbudowany jako rezydencja renesansowa w czasach Zygmunta I Starego i ulegający modernizacjom w kolejnych stuleciach ma znikomą dokumentację ikonograficzną. O wyglądzie w czasach piastowskich można mieć pewną orientację na podstawie zachowanych fundamentów, tylko częściowo odkrytych. Pewne domniemanie o rozkładzie budowli na wzgórzu zamkowym mamy na podstawie ostatnio odkrytego malowidła ściennego w kamienicy Lubomelskich w Rynku. Renesansową sylwetę ukazuje miedzioryt kolorowany zamieszczony w VI księdze dzieła „Civitates orbis terrarum”, wydanej w Kolonii w 1618 roku. Bardziej dokładne informacje o układzie budowli zamkowych, ich połączeniach – funkcjach, częściowo wyposażeniu posiadamy ze źródeł pisanych. Głównym jest inwentarz starostwa lubelskiego, zawierający także inwentarz zamku, sporządzony w 1564 roku. Kolejne zmiany funkcji i niewielkie stosunkowo przebudowy są opisane w dwóch lustracjach starostwa z lat 1602 i 1616. Dzięki tym źródłom jest możliwe poznanie wyglądu zamku w czasach jego świetności. Wynika z analizy tych źródeł, że nie bez powodu cudzoziemcy i przybysze spoza Lublina byli zauroczeni nie tylko położeniem zamku, ale także jego budowlami, wyposażeniem. Ponieważ całkowitą zagładę zamkowi przyniosły wojny połowy XVII wieku, nasze wyobrażenie o jego świetności jest ukształtowane tylko na podstawie źródeł.
The present buildings on the castle hill were erected mostly at the beginning of the 19th century. The 13th century donjon and the Trinity Chapel the building of which is associated with Casimirus the Great belong to the oldest ones, connected with the functions of the castellan’s town. The castle, built by Casimirus, and developed as a Renaissance residence in the times of Sigismund the Old and modernized in the subsequent centuries, has very few iconographie records. We can get some idea of what it looked like in the Piast times on the basis o f the preserved foundations that have only partially been excavated. We can make guesses about the distribution of buildings on the castle hill also basing on the mural that has recently been discovered on a wall in the Lubomelskis’ house in the Lublin Market Square. The Renaissance silhouette of the castle is shown in the co lo red copperplate from the 6th book of “Civitates orbis terrarum ” published in Cologne in 1618. More detailed information about the arrangement of the castle buildings, their connections and functions, and partly also about their furnishing comes from written sources. The main one is the inventory of the Lublin starosty including also the inventory of the castle from 1618. The successive changes of the function and relatively small re constructions are described in the records of two inspections of the starosty of 1602 and 1616. Owing to these sources it is possible to learn about the look of the castle in the period of its splendor. From analysis of these sources it appears that foreigners and other visitors were impressed not only with the position of the castle but also with its buildings and furnishing. Since the wars of the middle of the 17th century completely destroyed the castle our image of its splendor is formed only on the basis of the sources.

These considerations refer to the images and symbolic functions of the cemetery in the urban space and in the intimate experience of the individual. The analysis of two short stories by Ruth Hoffmann (Lüge/The Lie) and Heinz Piontek (Bäume im Wind/The Trees in the Wind) was inspired by geopoetics as a research orientation which consider the interaction and mutual influence of literary works and geographical region. In both stories, the cemetery is a peculiar and significant landmark in urban space, where wandering takes the heroines back. It allows them to face psychological traumas, and, consequently, experience catharsis or inner change. A place per se dedicated to death becomes for both elderly women a place of hope and a symbol of new beginning.

Tekst składa się z dwóch części. W pierwszej omówione zostały dominujące w socjologii i kulturoznawstwie ujęcia problemu niepamięci. W części drugiej autor przedstawia swoje propozycje i kładzie nacisk na konieczność odróżnienia niewiedzy od niepamięci. Niewiedza definiowana jest jako braki w erudycji historycznej, a jej przyczyny tkwią w niewłaściwej edukacji. Niepamięć przeszłości określana jest zaś jako przeciwieństwo pamięci. Z pamięcią przeszłości mamy do czynienia, gdy doświadczenia przeszłości są ważne dla funkcjonowania jednostki w świecie (poczucia jej tożsamości, jej identyfikacji w zbiorowościach, wyborów światopoglądowych, doznań emocjonalnych i/lub estetycznych). Rozróżnienie na wiedzę i pamięć jest istotne zarówno z praktycznego, jak i teoretycznego punktu widzenia. Niedostatek wiedzy i niedostatek pamięci to dwa różne zjawiska. Pierwszemu można zaradzić przez poprawę edukacji; w przypadku drugiego bezpośrednie akcje byłyby mało efektywne, gdyż tu ważne są ogólne trendy kulturowe. W dalszych częściach artykułu autor omawia przemiany form niepamięci stymulowane nowymi trendami w kulturze.
The text consists of two parts. In the first part the dominant in sociology and cultural studies approach to the problem of oblivion are discussed. In the second part the author presents its proposals. He emphasizes the need to distinguish between ignorance and oblivion. Ignorance is defined as gaps in historical erudition, its causes lie with the wrong education. Oblivion of the past is described as the opposite of memory. We have to do with the memory of the past, if past experience become somehow important in the functioning of the individual in the world (the sense of its identity, its identification in collectivities, the election philosophical, emotional experience and/or aesthetic). The distinction between the oblivion and the knowledge is important both from a practical and theoretical point of view and lack of knowledge and shortage of memory are two different phenomena. The first can be remedied by improving education, the second direct action would be ineffective, because there are important general cultural trends. In further parts of the article, the author discusses the transformation of forms of oblivion stimulated new trends in culture.
