Opis:
The aim of this paper is to analyse the link between understanding another person and understanding the Self in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness – a complex novella which raises a whole array of themes connected with human nature and the consequences of the lack of an established frame of reference. In a world where individual subjective consciousness appears to be not only the basic means of cognizance, but also the sole judge, Man is isolated from others and overwhelmed by the dark forces which seem to govern a hostile universe and also his own nature. The possibilities of arriving at any conclusive truths and achieving genuine communication with others are severely limited. However, the disquieting awareness of mortality, the darkness inherent in human nature, the apparent hostility of the universe, the dire lack of universal absolutes and the relativism and scepticism which result from all these circumstances do not in any way exempt us from the moral obligation to at least strive to fulfil the injunction “Know thyself!” – as it is self-delusion that Conrad abhors most of all. In order to overcome these difficulties and existential dilemmas, he proposes a set of simple principles concerning work, discipline, self-restraint, honour, solidarity and human interdependence, for it is usually because of others or in others that we realize the truth about our own nature.

In life narratives, authors unveil their lives, and autobiography also inspires authors from Muslim Arab societies. In contemporary societies, some authors have talked about their “ego” without fully revealing all their secrets. Things are more complex in a Maghrebian context in which disclosing and recounting one’s life (childhood, adolescence or even adult life) becomes a vital act. Our reasoning in this paper consists in showing that, to Malika Mokeddem, despite the criticisms and taboos, writing and being emancipated are no impediments; on the contrary, these taboos or proscriptions have motivated and served her life choices. Algerian authors often write about themselves by referring to their childhood, education and readings. Often the history of their country is at the center of their autobiographical novels. In this article, we focus on Malika Mokeddem’s childhood and adolescence, two very important periods for her, and proceed to analyze the different processes used by the novelist who in her autobiographical works seeks to “recover” her identity.

The article studies different forms of identity representation in contemporary Ukrainian poetry using as an example the texts of Iryna Shuvalova. Shuvalova’s poetry is discussed in a liaison with ideological and artistic changes in a literary process from the late Soviet era till post-Independent times. The article examines the process of identity building based on interaction between the Self / the Other, the private and the national, the female and the male. Besides that, the article investigates interconnections between language, corporeality, and time, which are conceptualized as different forms of identity building.

Opis:
The article is devoted to how the process and effects of psychotherapy may be analyzed and understood from the point of view of research on self-concept. Based on an analysis of the literature and their own clinical experience, the authors try to answer the following four research questions: (1) What does the change in self-concept in the course of psychotherapy consist in? (2) What is it that changes in self-concept: the structure, the content, or both? What are the mechanisms of the change? (3) What effects do changes in the self bring for the client’s functioning? (4) Is it possible for a change to occur in the course of psychotherapy without being accompanied by a change in the self? In order to answer these questions, a review of empirical research on changes in the content and structure of the self is carried out. The authors present the findings of studies referring, for example, to concepts such as: compartmentalization (Showers), self-complexity (Linville), objective self-awareness (Duval), possible selves (Markus), or self-concept clarity (Campbell). The final part of the article presents conclusions for practitioners. The highlighted issues include the building of a complete and generally positive self-concept, with those negative elements that bring more complete self-knowledge and give a direction to a person’s development. It is remarked that a change in the content of the self carries with it a change in self-structure, the latter being more strongly linked to adjustment and mental health than content change itself. The authors emphasize the protective role of positive future self-concept and point out that if the precondition of mental health and effective self-regulation is up-to-date and extensive self-knowledge, then psychotherapy by definition involves change in the self.

Opis:
This article explores the potential offered by complexity theories for understanding language learners’ sense of self and attempts to show how the self might usefully be conceived of as a complex dynamic system. Rather than presenting empirical findings, the article discusses existent research on the self and aims at outlining a conceptual perspective that may inform future studies into the self and possibly other individual learner differences. The article concludes by critically considering the merits of a complexity perspective but also reflecting on the challenges it poses for research.

Opis:
Trust is a significant component of social capital. The notion is also important in economics, and has been investigated by psychologists and sociologists, too. The findings of the latter disciplines may and should be useful not only in economics but also in anthropology and metaphysics, which are able to provide answers to the fundamental questions about the roots of human honesty, confidence and willingness to help. Behind this question there is another one: what is the human Self, which is able to trust in and to provide the necessary support to the Other if needed, and how is it formed? The author of the article answers these questions with reference to the ideas of two eminent contemporary thinkers, Emmanuel Levinas (1906–1995) and Antoni Kępiński (1918–1972). Capturing the consistencies, similarities and differences between Kempiński’s description of the situation of a person with schizophrenia and the anthropological vision of Levinas’ philosophy is possible thanks to a scheme composed of three elements: the Self, the border, and the space-time order and hierarchy of values. If the Other is perceived as someone responsible for the Self, then it gives birth to trust of the Self in the Other, i.e. a strong conviction that the Other will not fail and is utterly honest with regard to the Self. Such a conviction is the foundation on which the Self builds a relationship with the Other. In this way, social capital, which is vital for the further development of society, is created. The capital is interfused by trust being the variable without which it is impossible to explain many economic phenomena.

There appear to be quite a few parallels between Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Boethius’s The Consolation of Philosophy (Consolatio Philosophiae), and they seem to concern particularly, though not only, the character drawing in Tolkien’s book. Those parallels are preeminently connected with the fact that both Boethius and Tolkien like to think of the most extreme situations that can befall a human. And both are attached to the idea of not giving in to despair, and of finding a source of hope in seemingly desperate straits. The idea that there is some link between Boethius and Tolkien is naturally not new. T.A. Shippey talks about it in his The Road to Middle Earth, but he concentrates on the Boethian conception of good and evil, which is also of course an important matter, but surely not the only one that links Tolkien and Boethius. On the other hand, it is not my intention to claim that there is something in Tolkien’s book of which it can be said that it would have been absolutely impossible without Boethius. Still, I think it may be supposed that just like Boethian motifs are natural in the medieval literature of the West, so they can be thought of as natural in the work of such dedicated a medievalist as J.R.R. Tolkien.

Opis:
The relevance of the article stems from the demand for rethinking Natalia Kobrynska’s prose and therefore her position in the Ukrainian literary canon. On the one hand, Kobrynska’s artistic searches reflect the development path of fin de siècle Ukrainian literature (realistic and modernist writing). On the other hand, some issues and themes in Kobrynska`s prose are actually ahead of her time (conceptualizing the Other, identity construction through power discourses, interrelation of power and knowledge, Kobrynska`s writing ecological impulses and so on). The paper was written within the framework of identity studies; the key issue is the tension between a construction and a choice. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that Kobrynska’s characters’ identity is the result of their choices rather than their belonging to society. To conclude, Kobrynska has discovered the most appropriate ways of representation of society’s members at the time in which social relations collapse and emergence.
Aktualność artykułu uwarunkowana jest potrzebą reinterpretacji twórczości Natalii Kobrynskiej, jej miejsca w kanonie piśmiennictwa ukraińskiego. Z jednej strony twórcze poszukiwania pisarki odzwierciedlają drogę, którą przemierzała literatura ukraińska na przełomie wieków (tendencje realistyczne i modernistyczne), z drugiej zaś — zawierają one tematy i zagadnienia znacznie wykraczające poza ówczesne ramy czasowe (postać Innego, konstruowanie tożsamości za pomocą dyskursu władzy, wspólne oddziaływanie władzy i wiedzy, impulsy ekologiczne itp.). Rezultatem badania jestpotwierdzenie, iż, pomimo niestabilności ludzkich wyobrażeń o własnym „Ja”, Natalia Kobrynska odnajduje najbardziej odpowiedni sposób, aby ukazać członków wspólnoty w momencie rozpadu tradycyjnych związków społecznych i kształtowania się nowych.
