This article employs the concepts of spectres and haunting to analyse Graham Swift’s Mothering Sunday: A Romance (2016) as a commentary on (literary) history and its economy of spectres. Referring to Jacques Derrida’s notions of haunting, inheritance, and time, I focus on the spectres of literary modernism and the First World War to explore the ways in which Swift’s novella questions the canonical representation of modernism and revises the conventional means of writing about the past, memory, and history. The analysis of Mothering Sunday approaches the spectre as a figure of repressed otherness and a reminder of what has been excluded or silenced, so as to trace some of the ghosts that appear in the book and to underline its melancholic, spectral character. Situating Swift’s novella within the context of contemporary cultural criticism, I propose to see it as a sign of a larger cultural and critical turn, where spectres have been assimilated into the structure of the everyday and where the experience of haunting has become a major expression of the present condition.

Opis:
Collaborative photo-texts are not only experiments with page layout and the material aspect of the book. Such complicated and demanding projects employ various intermedial strategies of co-creating meaning, but they are not necessarily harmonious. This article presents an analysis of three photo-textual strategies: filling the frame, cut and paste technique and creative transformation of absent images/texts in photo-textual exchange. Three post-millennial works (I Spy Pinhole Eye by Philip Gross and Simon Denison, Co robi łączniczka by Darek Foks and Zbigniew Libera and Áladerrida by Tadeusz Różewicz and Jerzy Olek) serve here as representative examples of those photo-textual strategies.

The aim of the study is to answer the question as to whether the examined annotations can be regarded as a pattern of a parish register record, and henceforth as a text type. The author investigates the structure and characteristics of different register entries, with research field determined by the general structure and functionfunction of parish register records and annotations of these records.

This paper aims at exploring the role of cohesion in persuading listeners through answering the following questions; what types of grammatical cohesive relations are displayed and what is their frequency of occurrence in the sampled text? and how does cohesion contribute to the creation and understanding of a text? A program for corpus analysis called (AntConc Tutorial (Ver. 3.2.4) developed by Laurence Anthony (Anthony, L., 2004) is used for analyzing the sample of this study which will be the speech of the Singaporean prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, on the COVID-19 ‘New Normal’, on 31 May 2021 (Appendix A). The study devotes attention to the speech of the Singaporean prime minister on this occasion due to the importance of this event which occupied the world. This paper depends on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) taxonomy of cohesive devices to analyze data.

This article analyses the standards of textuality (according to Beaugrande & Dressler 1981) of the Danish funerary inscriptions. The basis of the test is a corpus of 250 grave inscriptions arising in the period 1770-2003 from Copenhagen cemetery Assistens Kirkegård. The first part of the paper bases on the seven criteria of textuality: cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality, and intertextuality. In the second part the study focuses on illocutionary structure and communicative functions and leads to the conclusion that the examined speech genre includes the most of the illocutionary speech acts: assertives, commissives, expressives and directives.

Artykuł prezentuje mediolingwistyczną analizę gier komputerowych, która w sposób szczególny skoncentrowała się na kategorii hipertekstualności. Korpus badawczy stanowią gry komputerowe różnego rodzaju, aby jak najlepiej przedstawić ich medialnie uwarunkowaną heterogeniczność. Udzielona zostanie odpowiedź na pytanie, czy spełniają one kryteria hipertekstualności i, jeśli tak, czy jest to hipertekstualność pełna, czy też częściowa, tj. czy gra komputerowa stanowi jeden hipertekst jako całość, czy też jest ona tworem złożonym z jednego lub wielu hipertekstów i ewentualnych innych elementów. W ramach analizy zostanie również zweryfikowane, czy gry komputerowe wykazują cechy specyficzne, wyróżniające je na tle najbardziej popularnej formy hipertekstu, czyli tekstów będących częścią WWW.
The article deals with the media-linguistic analysis of selected computer games, in particular focusing on the category of hypertextuality. Different types of computer games are analyzed, with the aim of demonstrating their media-conditioned heterogeneity. It will be examined whether they meet the criteria of hypertextuality and, if so, whether it is full or partial hypertextuality, i.e., whether a computer game is one hypertext as a whole or whether it is a creation composed of one or more hypertexts and possibly other elements. Within the scope of the analysis, it will also be verified whether computer games have specific features that distinguish them from the most popular form of hypertext – namely, from texts that are part of the WWW.

In his novels, Pierre Senges (born in 1968) constantly questions the limits of the literary representation as he emphasizes the textual nature of any fictional world. Veuves au maquillage (2000) is a relatively continuous narrative of an unusual suicide planned by the protagonist-narrator as a methodic murder gradually committed on him by his six mistresses, the six jealous widows; whereas Études de silhouettes (2010) consists of a series of short texts, each based on a phrase from Kafka’s drafts, without any thematic bounds between them. In Senges’s universe, the borders become blurred between different possible worlds so that the reader does not get the possibility to determine whether any of these worlds has a priority over the others. His postmodern writing is a lesson and a practice of relativity of values and significations.

“The Idiots,” published as part of Conrad’s first collection of short stories Tales of Unrest (1898), is, by far, the most minimalist of all his tales, therefore dubbed “pointless” by one of his critics. As such, it has mostly occasioned contextual readings to date, purely literary approaches to the story being few and far between. The present article offers a transformative reappraisal of this deprecated Conrad tale, in considering its artistic texture. A combined textual and intertextual approach proposed here reveals the presence, also in this Conrad story, of the modernist device of denegation (assertion of presence by absence, and vice versa) usually ascribed to William Faulkner, which helps resolve the issue of the tale’s ambiguous ending by defining it as the main heroine’s accidental drowning rather than suicide as it is usually seen in Conrad criticism. In its epistemologically transformative role, denegation likewise removes the odium of senselessness from “The Idiots” by identifying its covert, because denegatively construed, taboo theme of incest. The intertextual (Bakhtinian) reading of the story in Kristeva’s understanding of the term, and therefore through recourse to a later writer, i.e., Faulkner, does not only confirm the presence of the theme of incest in “The Idiots” but also reveals the American modernist’s unacknowledged indebtedness to this Conrad tale for some of the key motifs, if not its overall theme, of his most famous novel The Sound and the Fury (1929).
„Idioci”, opowieść, która ukazała się w pierwszym zbiorze opowiadań Josepha Conrada pt. Tales of Unrest (1898), jest chyba jego najbardziej minimalistycznym krótkim tekstem, który zyskał przez to u jednego z jego krytyków miano „bezsensownego”. Ze względu na swą lakoniczność opowiadanie było dotąd głównie poddawane analizie kontekstualnej, wskutek czego czysto literackie podejścia do tekstu prawie nie istnieją. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę epistemologicznego przewartościowania tego niedocenianego i krytykowanego opowiadania Conrada poprzez poddanie go wnikliwej estetycznej analizie. Zastosowane w tym celu eklektyczne, bo tekstualne i intertekstualne, podejście do tekstu ujawnia obecność w nim modernistycznej metody narracyjnej zwanej denegacją (potwierdzeniem obecności poprzez nieobecność i odwrotnie), zwykle przypisywanej Williamowi Faulknerowi, co pozwala na rozwikłanie zagadki niejednoznacznego zakończenia opowiadania poprzez jego zdefiniowanie jako przypadkowe utonięcie bohaterki opowiadania, nie zaś jej samobójstwo, jak chcą krytycy. Ponadto, denegacja pełni w tekście także inną transformacyjną funkcję, nadając wreszcie opowiadaniu sens poprzez wskazanie na jego denegatywnie skonstruowaną tematykę tabu dotyczącą incestu. Intertekstualna (bachtinowska) interpretacja „Idiotów” w pojęciu Kristevej, a zatem poprzez odniesienie do pisarza późniejszego, tu Williama Faulknera, nie tylko potwierdza obecność tematyki kazirodztwa w opowiadaniu Conrada, ale także ujawnia literacki dług Faulknera wobec Conrada, i to nie tylko w kwestii denegacji, którą dotąd przypisywano temu pierwszemu, ale także w stosunku do tematyki oraz szeregu motywów najbardziej eksperymentalnej powieści Faulknera Wściekłość i wrzask (1929).

The language and structure of the text are described in order to prove that it can be analysed as a text in the meaning applied in modern text linguistics. Moreover, the paper shows that a wider investigation is necessary in order to prove its stylistic and genre features.

No other period in the history of religious art has shown such a great amount of textual statements on altars, walls, stained-glass windows, communion benches, pulpits, pietà, entrances in ex- and interiors, ways of the cross, vaults, floors and statues as the neo-gothic interior of Catholic churches all over the world produced in the period 1870-1919. During these decades the church artists adhered to the neo-gothic style introduced by Pugin in Great-Brittan and Viollet-le- Duc in France. A whole generation of clerics, monastic orders, guilds and devotional groups glorifying the ideology of Ultramontanism in all kinds of manifestations, such as international gatherings, expositions of church-art, the consecration of churches, processions and publications in all sorts spread this style. This ideology, with a strong emphasis on the power of the pope in heavenly and worldly matters, has inflicted the whole world. The utopian Christian society based on a false image of the Middle Ages had also to be implemented in the colonies, without any real concern for the indigenous peoples or knowledge of the structures and cultures of their traditional societies. This article focuses on the unprecedented 19th- century decoration program in churches based on a new devotion inspired by the Neo-thomistic philosophy, incorporated in the official policy of the Vatican. The author chooses S. Jozef as an example because his devotion was elaborated with the persona of ‘patron of the church’. Not only the iconography had to be adjusted. For a good understanding words were necessary, also to stretch the difference with the patriarch Joseph of Egypt, a pre-figuration of Christ. The methodology chosen is based on elaborate research in parish-archives in the Rhineland completed with the study of primary and secondary literature. In the last category, the recent publication on de S. Jozef in Groningen is instructive. This research brought together all the inscriptions and textual concepts in the church for the first time. (Werf, 2012) The intensive research on the works of the Mengelberg-ateliers in the Rhineland is the backbone of this article (www.themengelbergstudios.com). The author is aware of the fact that this survey is just a modest try to investigate this very interesting aspect of the neo-gothic art.

Tekst to powieść psychologiczna, stanowiąca udany mariaż klasycznych wątków, motywów czy problemów z tym, co aktualne, mocno związane z postępem techniki i zmianami w sposobie postrzegania rzeczywistości. Autor Tekstu jawi się jako baczny obserwator otaczającego świata, który w swej pierwszej realistycznej powieści dokonuje trafnej diagnozy kondycji współczesnego człowieka.
This article is an attempt to look at the latest novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky – Text – against the writer’s previous work. The author of the article draws attention to the continuous creative evolution of the Russian artist, as well as the wide range of his writing skills. The Text is a psychological novel that constitutes a successful marriage of classic themes, motifs or problems with what is current and strongly related to the progress of technology and changes in the perception of the reality. The author of the Text appears as a watchful observer of the world around him, who in his first realistic novel makes an accurate diagnosis of the condition of modern man.

Il contributo analizza siccome nel passaggio dall’originario valore comparativo avverbiale, tuttora possibile, a quello di congiunzione che introduce una comparativa, documentato ab antiquo, a quello di congiunzione causale, ormai prevalente nell’uso corrente, specie nel parlato e nel trasmesso, ma non unanimemente considerato standard. Si propone quindi, sulla scia dei lavori di Mazzoleni (2007; 2012), un’analisi in diacronia del siccome, in cui, accanto alle indicazioni tratte da opere lessicografiche del passato (le edizioni del Vocabolario della Crusca, Tommaseo & Bellini, ma anche Tommaseo 1840; Ugolini 1848) e del presente (Battaglia 1961-2002, Sabatini & Coletti 1997, De Mauro 1999), nonché da grammatiche antiche (Soave 1771; Fornaciari 1881) e moderne (Battaglia & Pernicone 1968²; Serianni 1989), si analizzerà la documentazione tratta da corpora diacronici dell’italiano scritto, che potrà attestare i diversi valori di siccome nel corso del tempo. Studiando un caso di Grammaticalizzazione, si cercherà di offrire spunti di riflessione sull’evoluzione della norma grammaticale e sulle variazioni nell’uso, nel quadro complesso della storia dell’italiano.
The study considers siccome from an etymological point of view and observes the morphosyntactic and semantic value of this key word in written Italian through a diachronic perspective. It discusses the evolution of siccome from being a comparative adverb, to a comparative conjunction, to a causal conjunction, and how its actual meaning is not considered standard by everyone, although currently it is used in spoken and transmitted Italian. On the basis of Mazzoleni’s studies, the essay analyses siccome through the old lexicographies (the various editions of the Vocabolario della Crusca; Tommaseo and Bellini; Tommaseo, 1840; Ugolini, 1848) and the modern dictionaries (Battaglia, 1961–2002; Sabatini and Coletti, 1997; De Mauro, 1999); also, it takes into account older and more recent grammars (Soave, 1771; Fornaciari, 1881; Battaglia and Pernicone, 1968; Serianni, 1989) as well as several documents taken from various diachronic corpora of written Italian, in an attempt to show every single meaning of siccome over time. By studying this case of grammaticalisation, I offer some insights and cues about the history of Italian grammar, about its variations in use, and how this affected the linguistic norm throughout the complex history of the Italian language.

Opis:
W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono ujęcie tytułu filmowego jako krótkiego tekstu. Na początku omówiono różne definicje tytułu filmowego, a następnie pojęcie tekstu, uwzględniając przy tym cechy, które warunkują, że pewien ciąg jednostek językowych można uznać za tekst. Następnie przedstawiono dyskusję nad statusem tytułu filmowego jako krótkiego tekstu, w ramach której sprawdzano, czy i w jakim stopniu tytuły filmowe spełniają poszczególne kryteria tekstowości. Uwzględniono przy tym aspekty zarówno formalne, jak i semantyczne oraz pragmatyczne.
This paper presents a study concerning the status of film titles as short texts. First, the definitions of film titles and texts are presented, and comments are made. In the next step, the status of film titles as short texts is discussed regarding the textuality criteria whereby selected German-language titles of series are presented and commented on. The aim of this paper is to find out whether and to what extent the selected titles fulfil the criteria, and thus if they can be regarded as short texts.
